Gevrey-Chambertin Neighbors: Combottes 1er Cru and Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Introduction

Following three virtual tastings of Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (starting from the north at the combe, finishing in town center), we tasted the southernmost 1er Cru alongside its Grand Cru neighbor, Latricières-Chambertin. Two of the best three wines were 1er Cru, but they were from Dujac. I am confident that Latricières-Chambertin quality is on the ascent, knowing the trajectory of some of the top producers.

Flight 1 (15 notes)

Red
2001 Domaine Arlaud Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
89 points
Pretty aromatic start with black and red cherry with a hint of new oak. Palate doesn’t quite live up to what the nose implied with more modest fruit and less nuance. Slightly drying finish.
Red
2002 Dominique Laurent Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
88 points
Rich, ripe and fairly powerful, but a bit too oaky. Others enjoyed it less.
Red
2005 Hubert Lignier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
Opened a few hours before serving. Dense black fruit and meat, tightly packed and gazed us you with unwelcome eyes, but so much here. 91 points by the end of tonight, 91-92 point potential.
Red
2009 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
89 points
First of a 6-pack. Big and bold red fruit with some awkward tannins. Lots here, but not ready. Others liked this less.
Red
2009 Gérard Raphet Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
91 points
First of a 6-pack. Very pretty and charming with lots of books and crannies. Good enough weight, very good balance. Very good now.
Red
2009 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Alongside the 2010. This took longer to strut all its stuff, starting off fleshy and flashy, but gradually transforming into a spice-driven powerful wine with so much red cherry and berry. Good now, better 2025 forward. I slightly preferred the 2010.
Red
2010 Domaine Dujac Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Alongside the flashier 2009. Intriguing combination of ripe and tart with less whole cluster notes than typical for Dujac, but still spicy, floral, and textured in a very inviting manner. Very good now, maybe some upside.
Red
1996 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
85 points
Sorry, I do not appreciate this wine. While dense, there are too many firm and coarse tannins for the amount and quality of fruit still hanging around.
Red
1996 Domaine Trapet Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Old school Gevrey with some awkward structure but lots of power. Rich black plum and cherry, meaty character throughout, with tannins that aren't particularly hiding. Lots here, very engaging, even if not at all elegant.
Red
2000 Domaine Rossignol Trapet Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
89 points
Bright enough black cherry with braised meat notes. Also clearly showing Gevrey character, but without the heft and density of Grand Cru.
Red
2008 Camille Giroud Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Alongside 2007. Firm and structured with plenty of black and red cherry cherry. Good enough power and density, with enough fruit to outshine the structure, and retain its balance. Good now, but probably better in a few more years.
Red
2007 Camille Giroud Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Alongside the 2008. A great expression of the 2007 vintage, this is balanced and elegant, with red and black cherry with enough earth for complexity. At its peak now.
Red
2002 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
89 points
Mature black cherry with plenty of good depth and length, but moderate complexity. Others liked this more, but I found it getting tired, and nowhere near the quality level of another bottle from a few months ago. An off bottle, I hope.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
In 02/05/10 vertical. So much here, but frankly so little pleasure tonight. Denise and meaty with black fruit flowing from the rafters, but even more firm tannins. I truly like the potential, but would not revisit this wine until at least 2025, or better yet, 2030.
Red
2010 Louis Jadot Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
93 points
Floral red and black berry with a subdued start, but this kept going and going and going. Somewhat reserved, but so complex and nuanced, this is 2010 at its best with sweet/ tart, dense/ layered combinations coming and going. So tasty already now, with further upside. WOTN.
