Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY

Tasted March 12, 2022 by Burgundy Al with 487 views

Introduction

A good time was had by all. These are the tasting notes for the wines where I wrote a note that I was subsequently able to decipher.

Flight 1 - The Gala (53 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Delamotte Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
89 points
Current release. Lots of bright apple, faint citrus. Good and easy. Good now.
White
2007 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Meix Chavaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
This had been opened the day before, but we never got to it! Bright apple throughout with floral notes, and faint earth emerging. Still fresh after 24 hours. Lots of energy.
White
2019 Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Blagny France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
88 points
Small La Paulee pour. Big, ripe and rich aromas. Similar on palate with a sense of fatness for now that didn't thrill me.
White - Sparkling
1976 Philipponnat Champagne Brut Clos des Goisses France, Champagne
Very ripe, very mature with impressive heft and concentration. Seemed more Pinot Noir than Chardonnay to me, but still barely bright enough. But I am rarely a fan of older Champagne, especially this vintage.
White
2000 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Small La Paulee pour from large formant. Age appropriate with clear Grand Cru density, but of caramel apple adding charm. Fresh enough.
White
2012 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
In great Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet vertical. Tasty, but advanced. Clearly more mature than it should be, reinforcing that 2012 is a vintage to drink up.
White
2010 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
In a great Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet vertical. Brilliantly complex and layered, this is at a great place now. Not quite as powerful as another bottle from last year, but close.
White
2007 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
In a great Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet vertical. Hard to believe that this is the first time I have tasted this wine! Floral and spiced nose with lemon, lemon peel that is matched by its palate that adds in plenty of apple and poached pear. Great weight and length. Almost as great as the 2004.
White
2005 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
In a great Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet vertical. Shockingly fresh for this problematic vintage. Apple and baked apple with considerable weight and concentration, then good length. Best when first tasted. Less exciting when revisited an hour+ later.
White
2004 Domaine Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
In a great Ramonet Chevalier-Montrachet vertical. This wine seems to get better each time I get to taste it, and tonight's was the best bottle yet. So much here, complex and layered, bolts of energy from start-to-finish. Great wine!
White
2007 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
flawed
First oxidized bottle I have ever experienced from this typically brilliant 2007.
White
2011 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
89 points
Small La Paulee taste from 3L. Still slightly reductive. lean and bright with long finish.
White - Sparkling
2002 Krug Champagne Clos d'Ambonnay France, Champagne
95 points
Very small La Paulee pour. Rich and rounded textures, a real powerhouse, nicely bright finish.
White
2007 Simon Bize Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
92 points
Small La Paulee pour from magnum. Floral with apple and lemon and the 2007 linear brightness I enjoy. Long, powerful finish.
White
2015 Louis Jadot Chevalier-Montrachet Les Demoiselles Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small Paulee pour from 3L. Clearly very ripe, but so much power and sufficient structure maintain good balance. Very delicious now, this is best to enjoy over the next five years.
White
2000 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour. Rich and layered, at a great point combining fresh and maturing character. Very good now.
White
2016 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
90 points
Small Paulee pour. Lemon and lemon curd, good density and balance, just less complex vs HD tasted immediately after.
White
2016 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Cuvée Haute Densité France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour. Again showcasing lemon, lemon curd and lemon peel with wonderful floral charm and elegance. Long and powerful with great balance. Upside from here.
White
2012 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour from magnum. Great spice with rich apple throughout, the energy from the mineral textures really stand out for me. Good weight, great length. Enjoy through the next 5 years.
White
2002 Louis Jadot Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour from magnum. Very rich orchard fruit throughout, wonderfully vibrant and energetic with impressive density.
White
2018 Arnaud Ente Meursault France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
91 points
Small La Paulee glass. Packed with apple and pear with great concentration for its level. Needs time for more layers to emerge, but very tasty right now.
White
2005 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Les Forêts France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
90 points
Small La Paulee pour. Nicely rich, slightly burly for Raveneau. Good life ahead of it.
Red
2010 Domaine Bizot Vosne-Romanée Les Jachées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
92 points
Small La Paulee pour. So classically Vosne with a floral and spiced start, dancing red fruits everywhere and good concentration and length, with better depth.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour. More "ready" right now vs the 2009 Grands-Echezeaux, even if not nearly as complex. Huge spicebox with dense, ripe red fruits throughout. At the very start of its peak drinking window.
Red
1976 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Grèves Vigne de L'Enfant Jesus France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
Small La Paulee from magnum brought by Bouchard. Charming combination of ripe and mature red and black cherry with good power, ending with a nicely long finish.
Red
2000 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
94 points
Small La Paulee pour. Dense and powerful with ever-so-charming black cherry and roasted meat. I have not tasted this wine in a decade, and it better now vs 2011. But that's Rousseau Chambertin, even in a forward vintage like 2000.
Red
2005 Domaine Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Small La Paulee pour. Still firm like so many 2005s, was it also slightly dirty?
Red
2003 Christophe Roumier Ruchottes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Small La Paulee pour. Seemed even younger than last night's bottle (given less air time?), so less engaging for right now, but fundamentally alike.
Red
2005 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Small La Paulee pour, tasted twice. Wow, is there so much here, but backward and just teasing us right now. 2030 forward.
White
2008 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
In 08/09/10/11/17 vertical. Intensely rich orchard fruit from start-to-finish with impeccable balance and a generous middle. This does not seem powerful to start, but the finish goes on and on.
White
2009 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
In 08/09/10/11/17 vertical. Complex array of bright fruit aromas, supporting with subtle spice and floral hints. Rich but completely harmonious and balanced. The rare 2009 that is better than its 2008 counterpart.
White
2010 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
In 08/09/10/11/17 vertical. Lots of apple and pear aromas and flavors with some faint tropical hints. Wonderfully bright and elegant, with a sneaky long finish. Almost as good as another bottle from a few months ago, but that previous bottle was enjoyed over an entire evening, so it was easier to appreciate in its entirety.
White
2011 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
In 08/09/10/11/17 vertical. My favorite of the vertical. Brilliant floral start, this was the most attention-grabbing of the vertical, but also showing near perfect balance and great restraint with a complex array of apple and pear on nose and palate. Just entering its drinking window, this should drink brilliantly for at least another decade.
White
2017 Hubert Lamy Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Cuvée Haute Densité France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
In 08/09/10/11/17 vertical. Rich throughout with opulent fruit with a precocious character right now. Very big and powerful, with a long finish. Great potential that might live up to the brilliant 2011 (which was my #1 in the flight). This was the most difficult of the 5 vintage to fully appreciate because it was so young, so tense and just easing us with its full potential.
Red
2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
93 points
Small La Paulee pour. Lean and vibrant black fruit with roasted meat with lots of power. Much better vs another bottle from last night.
Red
2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
94 points
Small La Paulee pour from 3L from the domaine. Ripe but balanced with such pretty red cherry and berry, with faint spice and meat in the near background, and all the structure in just perfect harmony. Very good now.
Red
1971 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
92 points
Small La Paulee pour from 3L directly from Jadot. Earth and braised meat with plenty of vibrant fruit. So elegant and joyous.
Red
1953 Maison Leroy Beaune France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune
89 points
Small La Paulee pour. So charming with earthy red fruit alongside equal amounts of earth and mushroom. Plenty left in the tank. Quite likely a recent library release.
Red
2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
95 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Complex array of bright red fruit with subtle spice. This wine requires your to pay attention vs the 2009 served alongside, which simply captures your attention. Lots of complex layers here. More accessible than the last time tasted one year ago.

2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Big, powerful, and brawny, still with some awkwardness as it fully integrates. Just so much of everything here. I think all us preferred the 2010 for now, but I think this will be the better wine. but I will not touch my bottles until 2029 or later.

2005 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
96 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Backward and still structured, this has the most sheer concentration of the flight but was just hinting at its potential. I was more excited about this wine than most others today; in fact, I think this will be the best way amongst this 8 when we re-tasted them all...ten years from now. 93 points today, 96 points from 2030 forward.
Red
2003 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
95 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. An absolute hedonistic pleasure with so much ripe red and black fruit that is easily managed by enough acidity and tannin, showing great balance. So much here, this is also just a baby.
Red
2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
91 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Very good, but slightly more mature vs previous bottles, including one tasted just the other day.
Red
2000 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. At a perfect place right now, this has both fresh and mature red cherry & berry, baking spice, earth notes, and layers that kept unfolding in the few sips I was able to enjoy. Certainly less concentration vs most in the flight, but a perfect wine for the vintage.
Red
1998 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
flawed
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. Sadly, slightly corked. Also sad because this was first time ever tasting this wine from this vintage.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
95 points
My table's 8 vintage vertical at La Paulée. So much ripe, rich and powerful black and red fruit, still wonderfully fresh and precocious for its age, with incredible allure and charm.
Red
1983 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
A fascinating comparison to our 1990-2010 vertical, this was fully mature with as much earth and fruit, layered with tertiary notes that added charming nuance, but less weight or attention-grabbing substance.
Red
2010 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
Late night, small La Paulee pour. Really brilliant. Better tonight vs when last tasted in 2016. Exceptional potential.

Late night flight of 10/08/06/01 at Paulee, each so different! A stunning glass of seamless magic. Need I say more?

Late night flight of 10/08/06/01 at Paulee, each so different! More density vs 2010 but not the same harmony. Meaty and powerful with clear further upside. So much stuff here.

Late night flight of 10/08/06/01 at Paulee, each so different! Maybe just lost in this late night flight, but it was clearly showing its ripeness more than its charm. Lots here, but this needs to integrate more (or be served on its own!).

Late night flight of 10/08/06/01 at Paulee, each so different! Despite being the oldest of the flight, this vintage was nearly the brightest, with a gorgeous combination of fresh and maturing black cherry and berry aromas and flavors, along with a complex supporting cast.

2010 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Small Paulee pour, brief note. Very tasty with intense richness and moderate structure, so I would err on the side of drinking this sooner vs cellaring.

Flight 2 - After the Gala (5 notes)

Red
1980 Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Late night popped-and-poured. Tons of slowly cooked porcini mushroom with good density, but little else to provide much enjoyment.
Red
2006 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Late night popped-and-poured. Very ripe and noticeably tannic to start, making it less approachable or classically Vosne. This brightened up nicely. Retasted 30 minutes later(also cooled down), this showed so much power with black and red cherry, plus impressive concentration, nearing a good sense of balance. Better to cellar longer, 94+ point potential.

2014 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée

Late night, small glass, brief note. Great Vosne nose, similar palate just less intense. Good weight.
Red
2015 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Château France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
92 points
Late night, small pour, brief note. A big step up in yumminess over 2014, same great spicebox, but richer fruit profile. Very good already now.
Red
2014 Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos des Grandes Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
92 points
Late night, small pour, brief note. More here in complexity and nuance vs either vintage of Clos du Château, maybe less hedonistic fun than '15 Clos du Château, but I'd rather have this in my cellar. Or served with dinner.
