White
2018 La Colombera Colli Tortonesi Il Montino Italy, Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

Served double blind. A slight bit of reduction on the nose; a relatively neutral and nondescript wine. In some sense, this could have been anything, but there was a little something here that didn't feel too chardonnay-like to me. Somewhat disjoint acidity and a bit clumsy, with a little more alcohol than I would have liked to see.

White
2018 Arista Winery Chardonnay Banfield Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Served double blind. Relatively low acid, but with generous amounts of oak, showing some lactone qualities on the palate. Feels very opulent and ripe, with quite a bit of glycerin. Could pass for a fat, low acid white Burgundy, but I do like the breadth and weight of this wine on the palate. Good extract and concentration. My 1st, group's 2nd.

2019 Tan Fruit Chardonnay Dux Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
90 points
Served double blind. Funny to have this twice in two weeks. Anyway, this seemed a little dilute on the palate relative to the other wines in the flight. Somewhat subdued on the nose and palate, with a little bit of a crushed vitamin note. A hint of fennel seed on the finish as well; overall a bit foursquare right now. My 3rd, group's 6th.

White
2019 Goodfellow Family Cellars Chardonnay Temperance Hill USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills
88 points
Served double blind. I thought this was quite reductive, but it may well have been oak instead. Anyway, on the palate this had a whole lot of acidity, but also felt somewhat underripe at the same time, in that there wasn't much depth of flavour here. My 6th, group's 5th.

2019 Francois Carillon Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
90 points
Served double blind. Slightly green on the nose, but also with some nice tart tropical fruit. On the palate, a good balance of fruit and acidity, without too much other stuff gussying the wine up inappropriately. Generally pretty good balance, if a little lean for my taste. My 2nd, group's 1st.
White
2019 Walter Scott Chardonnay Cuvée Anne USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
88 points
Served double blind. Too reductive to start, with a pronounced sulphur note that I found offputting. More weight on the palate than the closest analogue, which turned out to be the 2019 Goodfellow Temperance Hill, but missing a midpalate leading to the wine feeling hollowed out. Very high acidity without the breadth to balance it. My 5th, group's 4th.

2017 00 Wines Chardonnay VGW USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
88 points
Served double blind. Vegetal, with something that almost reminds me of spinach. An odd palate; somewhat lacking in acidity, but not oily in texture either. Seems to have moderate to high oak use here, leading to good weight on the palate, but without the rest of the raw material to hold it together, so the wine feels disjoint. Slightly astringent finish. My 4th, group's 3rd.

Red
2019 Walter Scott Pinot Noir Sojeau Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Served double blind. Very tart cherry, and a hint of strawberry that points to this being Oregon. Fruity and bright, with very high acidity and a slight meaty note on the finish. I wish the wine did have more weight; it felt a little too light to me. Still, I did find this reasonably enjoyable. My 2nd, group's 4th.

2019 Domaine Lignier-Michelot Morey St. Denis Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Served double blind. A bit distinct from the rest of the wines in the flight; far more complete on the palate, with a bit of a darker-fruited, iron quality. Some black cherry as well, but the tannins on the back end are a little clunky and stern. Nonetheless, quite enjoyable now, even if it doesn't have the depth for long-term aging. My 1st, group's 3rd.

2019 Hundred Suns Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
85 points
Served double blind. Seems a bit lower in acid, despite the really bright red fruit and floral notes on the nose which would point you to one of those more post-modern style pinots. Some aldehydic elements that are distracting here, with a palate that is quite light. Unpleasant astringency on the finish. My 6th, group's 2nd.
Red
2018 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Heritage No. 12 Whistling Ridge Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
85 points
Served double blind. Confected strawberry and cherry on the nose. Thin and astringent from start to finish, with some unpleasant aldehydic notes. Feels underripe. My 4th, group's 6th.

Red
2018 Domaine Nicolas-Jay Pinot Noir Own-Rooted USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley
88 points
Served double blind. A mix of red and black fruit here, yielding a fairly pleasant fruit profile, but at the same time a somewhat hollow midpalate, and a surprisingly light texture for the fruit here. High acid and lacking in weight. My 3rd, group's 1st.
Red
2018 Cameron Pinot Noir Arley's Leap USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
85 points
Served double blind. Very dark complexion, with an almost slightly raisinated quality to the fruit. Clearly higher in alcohol and ripeness, I thought this may well have been a California pinot instead. The fruit is sweet but overall the ripeness leads the wine to feel a little blocky. My 5th, group's 5th.

2004 Müller-Catoir Haardter Bürgergarten Riesling Eiswein Germany, Pfalz

#26-05, 7% abv. 2426. From half-bottle. Served double blind. Quite a distinct botrytis note here, and a relative lack of acidity had me thinking something like a Zind-Humbrecht SGN from the mid-1990s, and certainly not riesling based on a relatively neutral profile. Some orange peel and marmalade notes that seem more like botrytis elements to me.
