Introduction
We gathered for our regular monthly tasting and this month it happened to fall on my birthday. Another of our group celebrated his birthday a couple of days earlier, so in honor of our birthdays we opened some better bottles. We taste in flights while enjoying a selection of cheeses, fruit and breads. Each flight is discussed and unveiled before moving on to the next flight.
Flight 1 - Starter (1 note)
Domino and I begin every tasting with a bottle of Champagne...it would be rude not to.
Flight 2 - Warm ups (2 notes)
Double blind for the group. These were opened and sampled about ninety minutes before they were served, and these showed their origin quite plainly- the group had no problem figuring out these were a domestic and French chardonnay, respectively.
White
2010 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Just popped this open and sampled ahead of our tasting later this evening (begins in 90 minutes), wanting to ensure it is a sound bottle and holy cow, this is gorgeous. Pale, youthful straw yellow color dripping with lemon oil, mineral, honeysuckle and jasmine notes. Full-bodied, with lemon, almond, sage, quince and wet stone flavors. Can’t wait to pour another glass after ninety minutes of air…
Served double blind to the group. Has not changed too much since it was first opened but has added a flinty/smoky element that reminds me a bit of the smell of the spent roll from the cap gun I had in my youth. Wonderful underlying acidity with citrus, mineral and floral qualities. This is why wine lovers chase Burgundy- when it's "on" it's fantastic.
White
2010 Peter Michael Chardonnay La Carrière
USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
Served double blind to the group. Mature, deep yellow color. Banana, tropical fruit, tangerine and apple notes. The orchard and tropical fruits follow on the palate, along with quince paste. RD picked this out as a PM chard though thought it was a few years younger.
Flight 3 - Reds (4 notes)
Red
2017 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Gigondas Le Coteau de mon Rêve
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas
Double blind. Aromas of mocha, plum, licorice and black fruit. Medium-bodied. Soft tannins support mixed red and black berry fruit and spice. I'd have guessed this a bit older than 2017, but it's balanced and quite good. One of my favorites in the flight. (J&J)
Red
1997 Peter Michael Les Pavots
USA, California, Sonoma County, Knights Valley
Blind. A bit of bricking at the meniscus. Aromas of tobacco, black fruit and iodine. Medium-bodied and integrated. Flavors of black currant, Asian spices and herbs; has a pleasant franc/greenish quality about it, something along the lines of roasted bell pepper. I did not pick this out as our Les Pavots, instead mistaking it for a 2000 St. Julien.
This had been double decanted off its sediment and back under cork 2.75 hours before the flight was poured.
Red
2016 Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Double blind. Lighter color. Aromas of prune, black fruit, raisin and plum. Flavors of pruney dark fruit, plum, pepper and spice. Not my style of wine. Guessed 2010 CndP.
This was a surprise, firstly because I have liked this cuvée on two prior occasions, secondly because I have very much enjoyed the 2016 vintage of CndP overall. I'll have to check in on some 2016s to see if this was perhaps a one off or if there might be something more going on as these age. (R&D)
Red
1995 Dominique Laurent Chambertin-Clos de Bèze
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Blind, though easy to pick out as our bottle in this flight, which had been double decanted off its sediment about 2.5 hours earlier, cork taken back out just before service. Light color showing its age and variety. Black cherry, cinnamon, Asian spice and rose petal notes. The palate does not hold up to the bouquet, showing a little bit thin, simple and even somewhat sweet.
Flight 4 - Reds (4 notes)
Red
2016 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon The Reserve To-Kalon Vineyard
USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Double blind. Aromas of black fruit, coffee and iodine. There's a meaty element to this as well. Full-bodied. The palate mirrors the bouquet with plenty of dark fruit and mocha, adding a nice herbaceous quality as well. Elegant and well-balanced, this is seamless across the palate. Given the integration and balance I thought this had a bit more age on it and guessed 2010 cab dominant blend from Napa. Beginning to drink very well. (J&J)
Red
2019 Teeter-Totter Cabernet Sauvignon
USA, California, Napa Valley
Double blind. Notes of licorice, kirsch, brown sugar, chocolate and cassis. Picks up a floral quality as it sits in the glass. Full-bodied and firm with sweet black fruit, barrel spice, licorice and chocolate flavors. Very nice. (R&D)
Flight 5 - Bonus red (1 note)
The group has a tradition of having one final red to cap the tasting before moving on to dessert.
Red
2008 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Pedregal Vineyard
USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
Our first of three bottles, double decanted off its sediment and put back under cork four hours before it was poured as the final red of the evening. Deep color. Abundant dark fruit along with mocha, incense and chocolate. Full-bodied, with medium tannins and flavors of currants, plum, cherry cordial, chocolate and spice. Lingering finish. Very well-received by the group. Drinking well with a good bit of air, but probably better to hold a few years yet.
Flight 6 - Dessert (1 note)
We finished up the evening with red velvet cake, Italian lemon cake, and the remainder of the cheeses and dried and fresh fruits.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2018 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance
South Africa, Coastal Region, Cape Peninsula, Constantia
By the time this was popped and poured, I had begun concentrating more on the conversations with friends than with my tasting notes, but ZaphodB‘s comments sum this up very well. It is intensely floral and vibrant, racy and elegant. Absolutely delightful. Must seek out more for the cellar.
