Flight 1 - Burgundy (4 notes)

Red
2017 Domaine Pierre Labet Beaune 1er Cru Coucherias France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
93 points
Pale ruby. Very aromatic expressive nose, of roses, violets, fleshy leek and asparagus, then red plum. Mouthwatering acids, and similarly expressive on the palate with strong floral potpourri, then red cherry and plum, and some fresh leaves. Slight length and having the florals and fruits come back in waves. Nice!
Red
2019 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
94 points
Medium pale ruby. A signature nose having a combination of florals, plums, brambles, and clove spices. Ripe, nearly stewed cherry, compote, and plums, as well as violets, autumn leaves, and forest floor, with a slight medicinal feel at the back. Lengthy, with waves of fruits, florals, and spices. Great wine!
Red
2008 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
Pale ruby core with significant browning and fading on edges. Ripe red cherry on the nose and a hint of violets, and slight greens. Started off rather floral and elegant, then lands off quite red fruited with ripe cherry, and quite briny and savoury. Great length, and pretty complex
Red
2014 Louis Jadot Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
91 points
Pale garnet, with some browning and fading on edges. Starts very closed on the nose and takes some 3 hours to show a hint of florals and chestnuts. Palate remains zingy in acids and bitey in tannins, while flavours still mostly savoury and then having some roses, twigs, and underripe cherry. Quite persistent at the back though, with a cherry and hay undertone

Flight 2 - Barolo (5 notes)

Red
2016 Vietti Barolo Lazzarito Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Pale ruby core with browning edges. Started stubbornly both on the nose and palate, then showed herbs, wet mossy earth, and a hint of violets on the nose. Very chewy tannins, with flavours of red cherry, greenish fern, fresh herbs, red florals, some pepper, and a hint of hay and tar. Quite a length, showing florals at the back. Nice, but quite surprised how the prices had risen to these days, of which the quality did not seem to justify
Red
2014 Davide Fregonese Barolo Prapò Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
88 points
Pale garnet. Cherry, herbs, and straw on the nose. Mouthwatering acids, and some bite on the tannins, with a sense of juiciness in the fruit flavours, then herbs, pepper, nutmeg, then drying tar on the back. It's textbook Nebbiolo no doubt, but seems lacking in terms of character, certainly not at the quality expected of Barolo
Red
1999 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Garblèt Sué Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
93 points
Medium pale garnet, with significant browning fading edges. Aromas of moss, fungals, brambles, twigs. Still a bit of chew on tannins, with flavours of roasted garlic mushrooms, cheese, twigs, coffee, prime rib roast, cocoa. Fairly lengthy, with mostly meaty nuances at the back. Nice!
Red
2008 M. Marengo Barolo Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
Medium garnet. Nose mainly of greens and pepper spices, then a faint hint of roses. Quite mouthfilling, with minty greens and a hint of plums and black cherry, then pepper and nutmeg, and chestnut, with some tar at the back. Seems somewhat straightforward. Probably what is known as a textbook modern Barolo
Red
2004 Cavallotto Barolo Riserva Vignolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Medium garnet, with browning fading edges. A very big, fleshy nose, with ripe cherry, fern, and black pepper. Very big bite of the tannins, and quite a bit of flesh and weight, while also having a silky mouthfeel, then with cherry, herbal greens, white pepper, paprika, and nutmeg, but it still doesn't seem characteristically expressive yet. Seems to still need the breathing overnight, but I can see the potential of it becoming fabulous
