Rustic and drying. Absolutely not what you would expect. About the 4th bottle not performing near where it should. (Gerstl gave it 19/20 when I bought).

how did it change over time?
I know that the o6s have been a little zig zaggy and no one here has really been singing songs about this bottle. it makes me sad because i have two bottles of it and one of the Fremiet : /
I hope that on day two it turned around

In a great spot. Showing initially stronger cab influence, the longer this stayed open the more balanced it became. Decant definitely recommended, this smoothed out showing great expression for the age and a velvet mouthfeel that went on and on.

10/30/23, 2:22 AM - would you say if this wine was kept well that i can age longer?
I keep looking at my one bottle and thinking it will be gorgeous but I am not in a rush to drink it. I bought it back in 2004 and have stored it properly since

Very tart cherry, a little oak and a little something dark, like earth. Lacking some body, with a somewhat hollow mid-palate. Honestly, somewhat simple, maybe even insipid. I would not object if others say this was shut down or a poor bottle, but this had little of the richness or vibrancy the pro notes promised.

This wine feels like a spring that is tightly compressed - a huge sense of latent energy. Perfectly capable of giving great pleasure now, with no signs of shutdown, but so incredibly primary with such intense structure that it really must be paired with food, or opened in many years.

Layers of earth and barnyard on nose. Super mineral. Intensely savory, the minerality here verges on sea salt. Cherry fruit - very primary. Really, really minty and extraordinarily fresh at the moment. Super animalistic. Soy and umami - big time. Blood orange and bitters. Extraordinary.

Extremely fine grained tannin, and lots of it - intense acidity - a hot finish that is quickly quenched under lays of cooling peppermint. Super, super long. A brute now, but extraordinarily well-balanced. What a wine - now and in the coming decades!

Great Pinot nose! Austere palate. Opens with time to a 91. Great producer in an average year. Somehow I expected more. Tannin still dominates, but is this wine still too young, or have I missed the drinking window? Time will tell! Two more bottles.

8/9/23, 9:30 AM - I have one of these in the cellar still. at the time, my wine dealer was telling me that 06 was similar to 93? and how it was an under the radar year. these need i think about 20 years or so to show their cards.
Their "lesser" 06s are showing beautifully now which gives me hope for this wine

Ian's Piemonte Celebration Dinner: Really enticing nose showing rose petals and red fruits. Medium to full bodied with graceful silky tannins that disguise the considerable inner core of power. A really complete and well balanced wine with an endless (still fruit driven) finish. Outstanding. A faultless bottle.

From a 375. This is very engaging. Petrol and fresh apple aromas greet immediately. Sappy palate yet with a light spritz that fades out in short order. Gets rounder and shows riper characters with air. More pear and melon come forward. The sugar seems pretty close to being fully integrated now. One knock would be that it doesn't quite carry all the acidity to give it good lift. Its so expressive and tasty you forget pretty quick. Very good.

I initially found this quite dark and closed off, possible contrary to some of the previous reviews. I kept half the bottle and on day 3 it had opened up and showed it's mini cote-rotie credentials with more perfumed red fruit. Will hold onto my last 3 bottles for a couple of years given this experience.

Anton’s Wine Tasting Notes
Winery: Mathieu Barret Varietal: Syrah. Area/Appellation: France/Cornas/
Brise Cailloux (Broken Pebbles) rough
Vintage: 2016. Price: $70 Auburn Wine and Spirits East Kansas
Color: purple/ruby. Legs: medium
Nose: blackberry, fine ash, dark plum, pepper,
Palate: blackberry, dark plum, black and red licorice, exotic tea, meat, violets,
Finish: damson plums, blackberry, more black and red licorice,
Comments: still very tightly wound and closed but all the components are definitely there. One week later In the refrigerator under Private Preserve; The damson plums, Black licorice, fine ash and Pepper are all still there. Very nice also very young. This wine will go till at least 2030 maybe even 2038 if stored correctly.
Pairing Suggestions: We will skip the mild Midwestern barbecues that is a given, let’s get creative. Aged white cheddar. Chinese Sha-cha duck. Texas wild boar sausage. Let’s think WILD rabbit, quail pheasant, deer, elk, etc. and ANY kind of wild fruit-or wild seasonings you can put in with it. This wine will take it, bake it and shake it.
Score in terms of Vintage: 91

Pale gold colour. Nose fresh floral/green. Quite yeasty nose. Palate v dry green apple, lemon grass. Hints of ginger, marzipan and honey on finish. Hints of a chalky minerality.

High acidity and pure with long, evolving finish. Really distinctive and well put together wine at a great price. Keen to try more from Domaine Huet.

3/9/22, 12:23 PM - these wines are very very good. I have been buying what I can since the 2005 vintage. the sec wines age wonderfully if you like aged chenin. Their sweet spot on average is about 10 years and a bit more for very structured vintages like 2010.
I can't say enough good things about how they age besides they make up the majority of the white wines for aging in my cellar

3/10/22, 2:54 AM - That '89 is going to be delicious. I have the 96 still of the same wine.
I live in France and a common accompaniment with a bottle like that would be pears with a bit of blue cheese. Something simple so it does not overwhelm the wine. I hope that you enjoy it
recently, I opened the o9 and it was delicious and really at it's prime

Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume VI (Chicago, IL): In some perverse way, I had hoped that the difference between the Rupestris and Franco wasn't as stark as it was, so that I could have an excuse to not chase the Franco as much. Alas. This is better than the Rupestris in every way. The fruit is larger scaled but purer, as this doesn't seem to be as affected by the hint of volatility, and the slightly dirty earthiness has been dialled back. Even the texture of this wine is more interesting, as there seems to be a mix of big and little tannin particles. I'll add that the table preferred the Franco over the Rupestris, in every case.

Perhaps the bottle was corked. Light burgundy barn yard nose. Thin, tannic body. Gave i5 a chance to open, finally obtained some sweet residual red fruit. That raised the question of a bad co4k. More likely the wine is past its peak. Two left in cellar, will advise.
  • GUBBIO commented:

9/21/21, 2:24 PM - those are quite young. i would think that they need a good 2 to 3 hour decant or something. they age well and are built for that. they need time to show their stuff. i have some of the 14s and i ill not opne the until '24 at least. i still have the 2oo5

pnp, evoliving slowly but nicely, fruit is still massive and holding, tannins are receding slowly. A few more years and this should be quite nice. Now it's a bit tart due to tannins but i'm liking the trajectory.

Surprisingly muted note. Brilliant Rudy color. Shows a bit of eucalyptus and clean red fruit notes with some loam and barnyard notes. Fine somewhat angular tannins and medium finish. If I didn’t know the producer I would say this probably won’t get better—but knowing this a slow aging bdx I would guess this will develope the expected maturity and aromatics in a few years. Still, not a great vintage for Leoville Barton.

4/12/21, 3:22 PM - from what I have read about this wine recently, it needs a good 1 to 2 hour decant or keep for a few more years. Sociando needs some time to come into it's own - like 15 years +

Served blind. I was all over the place, it was soft up front but had some significant structure on the back end. Fairly ripe, to the point that I was leaning to grenache from a cooler year. Good acidity. Once this was revealed to be burgundy, the rest started to make sense. The toughness of NSG, the structure of 2010... This was not particularly funky/animal as some have characterized the producer. But neither did it have a lot of distinguishing aspects of great burgundy.
  • GUBBIO commented:

Deep straw in color with an orange hue. Nose of ginger, honey, and ripe apricot. Intriguing tastes of apple cider, tangerines, figs, autumnal spices, and hints of lanolin and honey. Well balanced wine with nice viscosity and mouthfeel. My 5th and final bottle of this vintage and is drinking well and better integrated than when younger. Despite an oxidative character this wine has at least another 4-8 of pleasurable drinking life.

Bit of serendipity that I packed along this 375 and rocknroller had a half bottle of the '06 in his case. Great to do the side by side to finish a leisurely patio dinner with friends. The color on the '05 is strikingly dark. The good news is the wine can handle it. Decent structure so not overly cloying. Still, it's an intense Sauternes, probably best with a salty Stilton or something like that vs. a sweet dessert. Was worried about evolution given the color, but think I'll be patient with my remaining bottles.

Day 2. Dark and savory nose. There is some dark fruit there of blackberry and black cherry but it’s playing a supporting role to the rocks rocks rocks, olives, salty smoked meat, smoke, dark flowers. Very focused, elegant and with nice snap. The palate is velvety and gentle with some depth. Very floral and Smokey and savory - really rocky and mineraly. A bit of depth and width come out towards the finish. Lots of rocks and dark florals on the finish. Quite good. Not as superb as the 2008. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.
