White - Sparkling
2008 Diebolt-Vallois Champagne Grand Cru Fleur de Passion Brut Chardonnay
Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): Late disgorgement of this wine. It was served a bit cold but opened in the glass. I expected more of the 2008 freshness that you see in so many champagnes but this is a bit more evolved than I would have expected. Reminds me a to of slightly candied lemon peel with just a bit of oxidation.

7/9/23, 11:39 AM - We drank this last month for our anniversary and thought it was in a beautiful spot. To your point, actually a bit more mature than we would have thought as well.

White - Sparkling
2015 Savart Champagne Premier Cru Le Mont Benoit Champagne Blend
Return to Willamette; 7/2/2023-7/8/2023 (Portland & Willamette): Totally unfair show stealer for lunch. This was a pnp and just great from the start. Pours with just the hint of a rose tint or something a bit darker. Full out herbal and floral and bright and drinking very nicely. Was intrigued to try as we love the Brochet version and hadn’t had the Savart one in awhile so felt like it was necessary to get a comparison in. Both great wines. Got better and better as it warmed a bit. A wine to be served more in the red wine sphere with a touch of cold but enough warmth to get the full experience.

7/5/23, 5:58 PM - Sorry we couldn't make it work on this trip!

White - Off-dry
2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese Mosel Saar Ruwer
Popped one of these a week ago at a friend's place and it's still beautiful. Shoot at will, friends!

1/9/23, 8:46 PM - Agreed, this bottle was on fire and I had to keep going back to it throughout the evening. The peach was prominent but everything had a great balance. Beautiful wine.

2010 Proper Wines Syrah Walla Walla Valley
The last of our 2010s and probably we could/should have waited more on this one. We had a bunch of Washington state from this era and my takeaway is they had a lot more time available. These are closer to 20-25 year wines than 10-15 but what can you do. Still enjoyable and gamey and darker and more intense. Drinks well though.
  • schwank commented:

1/7/23, 10:55 AM - Still have a couple, will save one for a future visit :)

White
2017 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes
Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): One of my initial loves when it comes to white wine. This is and always has been the white wine for red wine drinkers. Full bodied, but nimble. Sweetness and flowers and honey and always just delicious. Worked particularly well with a truffle grilled cheese as a pairing.
  • schwank commented:

    6/13/22, 10:04 PM - Sounds amazing!

Rosé - Sparkling
1995 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé La Grande Dame Champagne Blend
A bunch of years ago we had our first LGD Rose and absolutely loved it and yet have spent very little time chasing this wine even as we've gotten much more into champagne. Every time I have another one of these I feel like that was a miss. This is great. It's a darker style of rose champagne. Darker fruits, more body, more heft. The kindof wine that almost wants to be paired with a steak or at least a big fatty meat. Really delicious.
  • schwank commented:

11/24/21, 10:36 PM - Love to hear this note as we are still holding one. Hopefully we can share it in person soon!

Rosé - Sparkling
2008 Billecart-Salmon Champagne Cuvée Elisabeth Salmon Champagne Blend
Epic Bordeaux for an Epic Birthday!; 9/1/2021-9/12/2021 (Paris & Bordeaux): From a magnum as an aperitif. This is light and fresh and a bit fruity. I wouldn’t say closed down, but it’s very primary in nature. Suspect you would get a lot more if you’d laid it down for 20 years but this was bought to ensure we had sufficient champagne for the trip because who wants to start a meal without champagne?
  • schwank commented:

9/11/21, 8:34 PM - Awesome from magnum! Love the notes from this trip.

Rosé - Sparkling
2008 Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brut Rosé La Grande Dame Champagne Blend
Great wine. This is one of those ones you can run a whole meal through from early sipper to steak course to dessert (although our bottle went much faster than that). I particularly liked it with the lobster bisque. It's still young and a bit tight but there's balance to it and as it warms up more flavor (to me that's always a sign of a good champagne - if I want it warmer than fridge temp). Very enjoyable. Off the list at JJ's in Jax which is definitely the best wine list we've seen in the area at very respectable (e.g. close to retail) prices.
  • schwank commented:

8/14/21, 7:08 PM - Glad to hear it... look forward to sharing a bottle with you!

1983 Charles Noellat Nuits St. Georges Pinot Noir
This was way over the hill. Not even close to drinkable anymore. No obvious flaws, just no vibrance or fruit of any kind. Just hollow and lifeless. So far 3 out of 3 dead old bottles from Envoyer.
  • schwank commented:

12/29/19, 6:14 PM - Thanks srh, that was indeed a mistake. Fixed my grammar and removed the point rating, I generally don't rate wines with points.

I've got a second bottle that I will drink up soon, hopefully that one matches your experience.

Red
1983 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle Syrah
This bottle was just drinking exceptionally well. It's in a nice aged spot (prob to me ideal drinking window). Very vibrant and intense, but also more in the secondary and tertiary. More earthy and leather and a bit of the iron ore style.
  • schwank commented:

10/10/19, 10:12 AM - Thanks for the note! We have one of these on deck for our friend's birthyear.

White
2015 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Cuvée Roussanne Vieilles Vignes
Anything But (still) Chardonnay - ABC wines | Q3 Wine Club (The Apt): Wine #3: Lightly sweet. Some beeswax and more of that mouthful characteristic, but here I also get a bit more acidity than I typically associate with this wine. It's lots of honey and honeysuckle. Tasty. (5 pennies)

7/15/18, 12:14 PM - Great to hear! For obvious reasons I'm going to be holding on to my bottles until after they emerge from midlife slumber.

Birth year bottle on my birthday. Born on a year that sucked everywhere except in Portugal. I was worried because some reviews here seem to imply that this is on the way down. On the contrary, I found it to be alive and kicking, with delicious plummy fruit and great silky texture. Super fresh. I can't believe this is 40 years old. I would have said this is from the 90's. You'd think it has been topped up and recorked, but the cork split in two and I had to fish out half of it with needle nose pliers. Clearly the cork was as old and crusty as I am. Pairing was my birthday cake, which was chocolate mousse.
  • schwank commented:

11/30/17, 8:42 PM - Congrats! I share a 77 birth year and have been trying numerous Ports due to the generally bad vintage elsewhere. Glad you enjoyed this bottle, I look forward to trying mine.

Rosé
2016 Tranche Cellars Pink Pape Blackrock Vineyard Yakima Valley Rosé Blend
Light and almost succulent and really just pretty. It's got tons of minerals and watermelon and very similar to past bottles. Always a favorite.

Acker Holiday Auction (A Voce Madison): We were at Beaucastel last month and the person doing our tasting noted how another set of Americans had said the wine was like horse. He was offended and took it as a bad thing, but I'm not sure it is. I get the saddle leather there. Also red currant and bit pepperish. Tasty.

Day 1, this was tart, thin, and really, really austere. High acid. Tart fruit. Day 2, developed a bit more cherry flavor, spice. Enjoyable but not great. Day 3, terrible. Only tart fruited, high acid, blah. Day 4, down the drain. Really weird bottle of wine.

N.V. Paul Dethune Champagne Brut Rosé Pinot Noir
Recently bought another 8 bottles of this stuff. Man, I can drink this every day. The apple and strawberry notes, combined with a zesty and slight bitter finish, that is clean and refreshing. Easy to buy and even easier to drink.
  • schwank commented:

5/13/16, 10:40 AM - Yeah, this is an absolutely killer Champagne for the money. We love it too!

Rosé - Sparkling

Beautiful wine with vibrant cherry and cranberry fruit, backed by nice acids that hold an incredibly lengthy finish. Good value for such a nice Brut Rosé!
  • schwank commented:

7/25/15, 6:21 PM - Frank at that price it's a no brainer, back up the truck deal. My local has it for the cheapest price in the USA on wine-searcher... but not that cheap! I will be buying more regardless... very nice stuff from a great producer.

Poured a medium dark yellow into burgundy glasses. The nose filled immediately with salted churned butter. a bit of acid in the mouth with some herbal notes, perhaps tarragon. Red apple skins, which I get in most of his wines start to appear, then build on the finish and last indefinitely. Long, gorgeous finish never pushing into butterscotch or caramel covered apple, but hinting in that direction. Really fabulous stuff and terrific with rabbit terrine.

Vibrant, fresh aromas with some mineral driven notes. Quite pretty. Tons of vibrant intensity on palate entry, showing lovely fruit and tons of smooth palate texture. Tremendous body. Strawberry flavors, and in the mouth this feels pretty light on its feet. Tart red fruit on the finish, soft melon, and then it dials into explosive acid and green apple skin. Soft and creamy notions linger on the palate despite the cutting acid. Very bright and quite nice. Indeed, one of the finest Oregon sparkling wines to date. Better than most Champagne for the price.

A bit of a mess. Alcohol dominates and the finish is bitter and unpleasant. If there's a flaw it is in the bottle as I took direct delivery from the winery at original release. I tend to think it's just a dark fruited bottling from a warm vintage. Not my style.
  • schwank commented:

3/19/15, 10:13 AM - The final glass on Day 2 wasn't nearly as harsh. Still a bit over extracted but better fruit and less alcohol heat. Still not what I am looking for at the price point.

Popped and angrily poured. Well, the last of my 5 375ml bottle purchase was the worst. A wonderful color of hazy piss-yellow greeted me and I knew we were in trouble. Moldy honey and sherry on the palate. I'm assuming this was pre-mox but who knows. I took a picture and sent it to a friend prompting him to ask, "Why do you have Widmer Hefeweizen in your burgundy stems?" Damn good question. 50-pts.
  • schwank commented:

    3/16/15, 8:18 PM - I would say that warrants a flawed rating, not 50pts.

1983 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Gris Willamette Valley
2/22/2015 - subtlet Likes this wine:

The Eyrie Vineyards Fiftieth Anniversary Tasting (Portland Art Museum): The nose is magnificent! It mainly smells like a fresh bowl full of caramel corn, somehow doing this without being too heavy. Scents of apple and Asian pear add even more attraction to the experience. It is clean, crisp, and round on the palate. This is on point! Fresh apples and Asian pears show cleanly on the palate. The fruit has a strong sense of purity and depth to it. A touch of dried apple shows as we start in on the finish. Clean and clear acid keeps everything lively, and lasts forever, slowly sinking into the gums on the finish. While the acidity evolves, the great fruit flavors preside on the center of the palate with elegant weight long into the finish. I think this is the best Pinot Gris I've ever tasted!
  • schwank commented:

2/25/15, 2:25 PM - Totally agree... this is definitely the best Gris I have ever had.

Drank two bottles about three days apart and both were lovely. Color was deep rose-purple and an elegant nose of deep dark berries, smoke and light oak. Flavors of dark, dark berries, a touch of smoke, a little oak and smooth luxurious tannin. I got these splits at a smoking deal and can't wait to drink them all. I was a bit worried the splits would be over age but they still have years of life in them; well kept full bottles should do wonderfully into 2020.

White - Sparkling
1998 Domaine Huet Vouvray Pétillant Brut Chenin Blanc
Chilled 30 minutes then opened. Pours a dark golden color, appearance is consistent with oxidized white wine. Aromas include bruised apple, flint, pear, lime, and beeswax. On the palate the bubbles are barely noticeable but the acidity is still quite impressive. The flavor/aroma match is pretty much dead on. I really enjoyed this wine the more I tasted it. I do wish for more bubbles but it's almost 16 years old. A great experience at the price.
  • schwank commented:

3/14/14, 4:26 PM - Sounds about right, definitely this is minimal on the bubbles. I am going to pop one this weekend I think.

I am not sexist, it is just that makeup comes to play in this, and not that many men wear it. So you walk in a bar to meet a woman someone told you was pretty good looking AND smart (WS 92). You see her across the room and she looks pretty attractive. She is supposed to be pretty modest ($) and is. You go over and sit down and out of the corner of your eye you see something odd about her face, but you focus on conversation. Things go well at first, but all of a sudden she only wants to talk about cats (felines or the musical, who cares). Then you notice the make up, there is a lot of it. So you wonder, she must have really been different 6 years ago when your friend met her, but it doesn't seem possible. This spaetlese has the initial hints of something special, the nose, the attack, it is even starting to show secondary Mosel characteristics, but half way through the rug is pulled out and that is it. So you have another sip, oh still good, but gone immediately. H-B is a Total Wine staple, I am not sure others sell it. That in of itself casts a shadow on it. Like when I see a label at Total that says Alfred Moriconi Selection or something like that, you know it sucks. This wine is sweet, sure, but it ain't suh-weet. I am certain it won't improve, the near acidless wonder must have spent itself at the WS tasting in 2008. My other 2 bottles will be served to someone who says, 'oh I like sweet wines'. It might be better put in a SodaStream and sektified.

Straight vermouth is something new for me, but this is a great introduction. It has a depth both sweet and bitter, and the lengthy finish leaves you craving more. First bottle lasted one week... need to get more!

Showed darker notes of black cherry, barnyard, Asian spices, and black raspberry. Lots of structure and tannic grip which held the ripeness in check. Very, very enjoyable but I worry about the brett blooming. Right now it's drinking well so I plan to consume my other bottle within a year or two.

2011 Damilano Langhe Nebbiolo Langhe DOC
A reliable producer known for Nebbiolo from Alba and Barolo first, this Langhe is from a sub-region known for value. Ruby red with just the slightest orange at the rim, this Marghe shows an appealing nose of cola, cherry and white chocolate. Light-bodied and mineral-driven on the palate, this savory, woody wine is on the austere side, with ample lip-drying tannins masking the dried damson well through the middle and leaving one with a white pepper sensation on the short finish.
