The word elegant springs to mind. A bottle aged gracefully and with plenty of vibrancy and some red fruit! Started to decline around 2 hours in with sous bois and tertiary notes appearing!

97 Trapet Chambertin - had very low expectations given a less than stellar vintage but once open it was alive and has the masculinity yes still lingering primary characteristics. Very long finish too which took me by surprise. Very extracted

91 Lafite - you would expect it to be dead given the poor vintage however it wasn’t and far from it. Granted it lacked density but it gave the typical left bank characteristic amid in milder dosages.

From the straight off it displayed what I would call new world ish characters. Very intense, very big and very concentrated yet from the scent to the palate it exhibited a fine balance.

We anticipated some time might be needed but it was open for business from the get go guess with that it masked the usual MSD but the fruits did come thru later of candied cherry much later to do the terroir some justice.

Overall, can still age more to allow more of the finesse to come thru!

Lemon zest the dominant theme and throughout the dinner. Gained in weight as the evening went on and we got some creaminess. Overall excellent acidity and body can age well for the long term.

As a food paring note, it paired up exceptionally well with fresh steam fish… the acidity and the fish had an harmonious encounter !

Stylistically traditional and one can almost taste the stems and the tannins. Very extracted and gave lot of umph suspect the sorting and selection played a big part in it at the expense of yield.

Violets on the nose less of the primary on palate with more depth and Asian spices. Structurally intact and would lay this to sleep for 5-10years more.

When PnP you just would have been welcomed into a beautifully looked after garden… the flower wonderfully welcoming almost fresh spring like.

As the night went on the intensity of the bouquet grew and ditto the palate. Sheer elegance with lots of primary on dancing.

Into the latter stages, the pollen nose was out of this world good.

Bravo!

Patience required on this one as took quite a bit of time for the nose to come alive and when it did, the violets were harmonious and soft.

Wine structure was decent with tannins and acidity well balanced so can still go on with further cellaring. Had sparks of primary characteristics some fresh cherries yet it lacked the usual sweetness of ripe red fruits.

Tertiary notes evident towards the end, tea/sois bois on display.

Overall, pleasant but just lacked that little bit.

After reading some of the notes about this 2019 ex domaine batch, I must admit I was somewhat nervous ahead of opening the bottle given the occasion at stake.

Thankfully, it was only slightly advanced and the vanilla pod nose keep on growing through the evening and it was mesmerisingly good.

Palate was buttery and honey depicting a well matured PM burg.

Finally I can understand why people rave about Armand Rousseau and the art of combining concentration and elegance! Still young and can go on but this showed up exceptionally well with lots of berries on the slight tangy side yet evolved with characteristics that you associate with the appellation of a Gevrey Chambertin, the musculinity came after 3-4 hours!

Initially can fool one as a MSD but with patience the VR spices came as well as aroma of caramel, vanilla pods. With further aeration…. We had hints of fruits like tangy cherries. Can very much improve over next few years.

Oaky nose and very sesame! Full of life with primary notes still intact. Both redand dark fruits in abundance whilst with aeration seeing a lot of depth! Later evolved to purple flowers and had an unusual elegance about it!

2nd bottle and it was rested well! Had all the rightful characteristics of a Gevrey Chambertin. Semi fleshy nose to start but evolved to deep purple flowers. On palate, whilst many would use red fruits, I beg to differ with fresh and semi ripe plums to describe the palate. Balanced sweetness and acidity with adequate depth. Not bad for a casual Sunday lunch time drink!

One of the few GCs that I have yet to taste and finally thru an incredibly generous friend that I had this encounter. When PnP everything seems a little closed as it needed a bit of time to settle down then the violets and the red flowers came rushing at you…but palate warranted further patience.

An hour in, almost garden like, the flowers and grass all dancing in harmony whilst the taste was dense a DJP style yet comfortable with a mixed blend of dark fruits. Finish was long and very long.

The tertiary characters came out towards the end with sous bois and some leafy notes and a bit of tea. (Pu erh)

It was a sumptuous encounter!

Almost no bottle variation here, still very much on point. Round, well integrated, at prime.

So on the Coquard CM17. Needed a lot of time to come out of its shell. Initially it was just almost like alcohol flavoured water. But the floral scents needs like 45mins-1hour for it to come alive. Bouquets and pale flowers and some violets. Palate wise grew in depth with primary notes dominant like strawberry! Towards the end the tannins were quite subtly evident but not uncomfortable.

Top notch gevrey chambertin village wine. A little oaky nose coupled with mild meatiness which progressed to become floral, I would say a combination of red and dark flowers. Acidity with primary flavours working in harmony which is remarkable for a young wines.

So vosne-romanee. Great nose, Asian spice box and tea leaf. On palate it was harmony with semi stew red fruit and delivering balance sweetness and acidity. Structure very much intact such that testimonial to the provenance.

Grands Echezeaux, quite simply put, is a world class terroir often over looked by its VR neighbours. Harmony in a bottle from nose was initially floral then evolved into a slight spice box. Red fruit and mild cassis palate with a lasting finish. After about 2 hours some sweet black currant nose came alive for a short span and then dare I say a little pomelo scent. Bravo.

Gentle scent of pale colour flowers. Good structure with balanced acidity, velvety and soft tannins. Can still go on for another 5 years or so.

A softer interpretation of the terroir. Tannins whilst there is comfortable ditto acidity. Some element of red fruit and in part hints of typical Gevrey boldness.

Orchid nose with intensity which later evolved to meatiness and somewhat fleshy! On the palate, the concentration and extraction was felt immediate whilst weightless. The legs does not lie. Bags of dark fruit and spells of cherry. Long long finishing! NSG disguises as a VR.

Nose was classic chambolle-musigny soft scented orchid! The palate was vastly different almost VR like, dark fruit with cassis and long long finishing. A tale of two cities like.

Had a glass of this, pleasant soft tannins. what it does tell me though is that 2017 is notably weaker vintage vs 15s/12s/10s/09s but making it younger drinking I would presume.

Drank the 2009 vintage and shaping out to be a great one. Tannins still showing in full force, grippy, pronounced yet not uncomfortable. Nose had hints of floral bouquet and leather. Palate had acidity and cassis with dark chocolate finish. This is far from ready but showing glimpses of what should be a great vintage in years to come.

Deep, good concentration and purity. Sweet floral scent which evolved to mint leaf and some Asian spice. Black fruits on the palate with intermittent citrus fruit similar to the Chinese grapefruit. Long finish

The Pacalet needed a bit of time to come alive. Soft yellow / violet flowers on the nose. Silky smooth on palate and great fruits exhibiting here felt fresh strawberry and a good length finish. 2014 can be a funny vintage and this one was still tannic and can only improve from here.

Drank the vintage. Took a little time for the wine to come alive. The nose, put simply imagine yourself in a botanic garden. Just mesmerizing! On the palate, tannins still evident whilst it has softened over the years still meant the wine can go on and on. Plenty red fruit and balanced acidity. Don’t get me wrong it is a mere village wine, so imagine a 1er or Grand cru, those will be far far from ready.

Sweet flower nose with elements of plum. Wine revived with some red fruits and hints of sharp acidity implying a lot of life! Yet not uncomfortable. Medium finish with mid palate sense of ripe strawberries.
