Mature, complex, develops after opened. It may have some years ahead, but might be at its peak.

Some rough tannins, worthy of more age. Prune and blackberry fruit. Heavy. Tasty.

These heavy huge bottles are a crime.

Not great. Very little fruit. Took a day to open up. Heaviest bottle in my cellar.

Well structured wine without a lot of distinction. Tasters said “that’s nice, what’s that other bottle?”

Flat, muted. I did what I rarely do, open a different wine for dinner.

Edit: reopened next day and found it aromatic, and completely delicious. Let it breathe.

A mature, elegant, balanced wine. Fair amount of sediment stuck in the shoulder of the bottle. There is fruit (red fruit, plum/prune) and acid in balance, long finish, elegant nose and maturity that zins usually don’t achieve. A delight.

Delicious. Lush, fruity. Dark and red fruit. Not so high acid, so I’d expect it’s a drink now. I love it.

Very intense on opening. Concentrated black fruit, tar, spice. High alcohol. The intensity masked the low acidity, which showed up later. Overripe.

Not a re-buy

General rule: if your vineyard is right for Cabernet, it’s wrong for Pinot noir. Trefethen has vineyards in Napa Valley, Oak Knoll district, where they grow cab and Chardonnay and other varietals that like the warmth. They grow Pinot noir right in the middle. The wine is light, even by Pinot standards, has some of the barrel on the nose, but the flavors are light and harsh. The harshness diminishes by day 2 and 3, but when I think of what I’d think is a fair price for this, I’d say $10-12. The price is $45. They should bulk this out and replant the block to something else.

In perfect balance, decent acidity, which is rare for fully ripe zins, mild tannins, full fruit, and maturity. Zinfandel doesn’t get much better than this.
