4/27/24, 8:47 AM - I can't comment on the Charvoche / Peroline that year, but the 2010 vintage in the N.Rhone has been very broody & tannic & reticent to come out of its slumbers. I wasn't even all that taken with the Jamet 2010 late last year, but I'd wager both that & this will come around...
12/28/23, 3:08 AM - I don't remember thinking of Cab Franc - and I drink a lot of Cab Franc. Any part of CF's typical profile or the style of any producer(s) ? 'Im just curious as that apart your description perfectly evokes my memory of drinking this a couple times over the last year... Fascinating, ultimately delicious wine !
5/22/23, 3:05 PM - Did you use any preservation system or just re-cork it and put it in the fridge ? Pretty remarkable !
4/30/23, 7:20 AM - If you are in the UK, check out the J&B sale - they are almost giving this away atm. No connection, I was just checking CT to see if it was worth a punt ;)...FWIW I remember quite liking his Boca
1/27/23, 2:14 PM - My condolences :(
1/27/23, 2:04 PM - It really shouldn't be past it's prime at this age, but your note resonates with my experience of a half drunk b4 Xmas... somewhat concerning ! (FWIW I liked the 2010 much, much more)
11/7/22, 3:42 AM - Nice note & thanks for the update ! T he 2018 Clos Guillot was stunning for about a year after release & then seemed to close down pretty hard. Interesting to read that it opens up nicely with a lot of air. Agree that this should be great - again - at maturity !
9/13/22, 6:00 AM - That's a pretty damning review & from a reviewer I respect & generally find I agree with! This is her 'top cuvée' too & not cheap by Chinon standards... I hope that your bottle was just in a very sulky period (although your evaluation sounds rather final) and / or the 2016, which I've got a case of, turns out much better!
8/27/22, 2:20 PM - Please excuse this ignoramus, but what is a CA / FR crossover ?
9/2/22, 1:46 AM - Thank you ! (My very limited experience with a few bottles of Cali Cab Franc wasn't at all happy, but not broad enough to develop a meaningful opinion. I loved Baudry's CG 2018 on release, but observed it close down quite firmly after a year, I'll sit on my stash of LCB & hope for good things in 10 + years time)
9/2/22, 1:32 AM - This is why I love CT! I also had the same experience - I loved this wine when it was young, well the first bottle & bought quite a bit (along with the CdB 2014). I drank another bottle of the Le Mont about 9 months after the first and it was just as you described 'maybe oxidised...musty' - no fun ! So, I'm very happy to hear that - in your experience - it has bounced back! On the other side, the CT reviews for the CdB 2014 are suggesting signs of (premature) oxidation.. I'm going to pull a bottle of each out of storage and have a look for myself. I have a vague impression of reading somewhere that Huet's secs can go through a closed down / grumpy stage where they give the impression of being poxed, but are only 'sulking'. Your report would seem to support this. Do you have any other experience or written sources that would support this thesis ? Cheers
8/18/22, 4:13 PM - Is the review for the 2016 or 2017 vintage ?
8/19/22, 5:10 AM - Sorry to hear about the one dud! ...I have a case of the 2016 I haven't broached yet, so genuinely interested in how the wine is evolving
7/7/22, 3:35 PM - So, so different from my experience (with a Magnum of this drunk via Coravin over about a week). I thought the wine I drank was excellent: pitch perfect ripeness, earthy, savoury, dark berries & lovely violet notes, which to me are typical of the best Loire Cab Franc. I'm not questioning your judgment - and while I completely get that people have widely different palates & preferences - I'm still left wondering if bottle variation or bottle condition could be an issue ?
4/27/22, 4:23 PM - I've not been able to try a 2016 yet, but agree that Vinupetra is 'among best Etna's out there'. A couple of bottles of the 2006 were drop dead gorgeous last year, so this wine certainly has the potential to age beautifully, and I imagine will do in a vintage like 2016...
4/12/22, 2:44 AM - Thanks, I just read and enjoyed your comment on the 2016. I will have to try and track down a few bottles ! Your comment on how enjoyable that young bottle of Bressandes currently is - quite surprising given the vintage and vineyard, but I don't doubt you - makes me think I could probably do worse than checking in on one of my bottles of Antonin Guyon's 2017 Clos du Roi! I will feed back when I do... Santé!
4/12/22, 8:16 AM - It is a risk, indeed, but then the 2017s seem to be drinking - for the most part - fairly well young & the way I ended up with these bottles means they are knocking around at home rather than in storage... ( I see the wine merchant you mention has some of the 2016 Bressandes and at a fair price ;). I agree this is a domaine worth watching, and the distinction between Antonin Guyon & Domaine Guyon goes over the head of some wine merchants - so it's worth checking that it really is the one rather than the other. I have no experience of Domaine Guyon, but I think I read WK commenting positively on their range...
3/1/22, 10:10 AM - I've loved this and drunk the best part of a case in the last year, but had the sense that my latest bottle was not as enjoyable as the earlier ones, so I agree these may be beginning to shut down. Great fun on its fruit while it lasted, will be fascinating to drink again in 5, 10, 15 years...
2/14/22, 3:47 PM - I haven't opened a bottle yet - bought a case on release - but I'm enjoying seeing the write ups get more universally positive & the scores progressively edge higher & higher :) ....maybe time to take a peak?A nice evocative review !
2/8/22, 10:29 AM - I love the wines from Chinon in general & this estate in particular too & enjoyed the 2015 well enough, but agree it was an unusually light-bodied (& precocious) bottle of Les Picasses (strange, given the hot vintage)- and far from the best Olga Raffault I've drunk. .
1/21/22, 11:19 AM - I thought this seemed excellent value for £16 something for Theatre of Wine - but €12 !!....guess it makes sense, but gotta get my ass back over to France! Agree this guy makes some excellent (value) pinot ! (I was told he provides the rootstock and / or clones for some of the top Burgundian domaines inc. DRC, but my I've not confirmed my source )
2/3/22, 8:07 AM - I'm in Highgate / Archway - Theatre of Wine have another branch up here, although I've been to the S.London one too. Think we have exchanged comments on Wine-Pages but I don't think we've ever met. I've only made it to one 'off-line' ...do hope to one day ! I'm going to Paris next month for a week, so I shall take your advice and seek these out. Do you have a go-to merchant / caviste for them ?
2/3/22, 8:30 AM - Thanks, will do !
1/27/22, 2:38 PM - Thank you Julien - would be interested in your thoughts on it! Also look out for their 'Chinon Les Quatre Ferrures' the 1989 is sublime & I believe they also made that cuvée in 2014, but I've never managed to track down a bottle, and there's no record of any other vintages....
1/21/22, 11:26 AM - Damn ! Your review makes a very compelling case for buying a case ! The least pricey of their wines after the straight ER....and I thought 2018 was meant to have been a weak vintage for Etna?! Thanks, will track some down...
1/21/22, 10:51 AM - Thanks Forceberry - a case of this appeared on a list I follow and peaked my interest. Your detailed analytic note was almost as good as my getting to try the wine! I will pass on the case, but maybe keep my eye out for an odd bottle.
1/18/22, 6:37 PM - I had no idea this was a negotiant wine - it (at least earlier vintages) had a distinct 'house style' - in the very best sense of the word - that I picked up throughout the range. Do you have a reference (just out of curiosity !)
1/19/22, 6:35 AM - It does indeed say 'bought in grapes' - I love this producer too! Thanks for the info!
1/19/22, 9:36 AM - Excuse the digression - I had a look at your profile & we drink and appreciate lot of the same wines! I couldn't agree more about the Clos Guillot 2018 as bargain of the year & I'm also half way through my case of Xavier Gerard Cote Rotie 2017, which I intended to cellar for much longer.... I had the audacity to add you as a 'friend' rather than become a fan...I don't really know what the difference is on here, but I prefer the equality of status implied in a friend.
1/6/22, 6:33 PM - :(
1/5/22, 1:22 PM - What a brilliant tasting note ! I've been (uncharacteristically - I normally wait) devouring bottles of the Clos Guillot 2018...hard to resist checking in on the top dog in this vintage after those being so precocious - open - generous, but your advice to wait has to be sage !
1/5/22, 1:07 PM - Sorry to hear it... Has got to be shocking storage as a bottle of the 2006 a few months ago was singing (sorry) & only just approaching peak....and it's pretty sturdy stuff too! I think I bought a case of 2010 non-Riserva from them pre-Brexit & had no probs. However, I shall heed your warning and give them a swerve in the future. 'Tis a bugger (for UK based drinkers) as Radici (Riserva) isn't anywhere near as available as it should be!
12/8/21, 2:58 PM - The above comment is on the money about the infantile pig :)
11/24/21, 11:55 AM - Merci a vous! it is a nice place ! No, sadly, I didn't see a bottle of Marc with a snake in it, however, if I make it back there - which I very much intend to - I'll drop a hint that any such unusual finale would be very well received ;)
11/3/21, 9:50 AM - I'm very happy to have a full case of this having enjoyed a bottle of the '17 & will try & keep my hands off for a couple of years. Really appreciate the 'Winemaker note' - thoughtful & extremely useful, I wish others (that I knew of) did this too !
10/25/21, 4:09 AM - Useful note, thanks! I have a few of these & will resist any temptation. to open a bottle for at east a few years...
10/15/21, 4:41 PM - As always a great note! Also very interesting to me as it contrasts so starkly with the Bernard Baudry Franc de Pied Grolleau 2019 that I've been drinking over the last few days - also my first experience with the grape. The Baudry Grolleau is very floral with some sweet spice on the nose and little else - it's a bit much really and made me think of a plug in air-freshener. It's light bodied, father simple & although dry, gives an impression of sweetness...again... The Baudry (FWIW I adore their Cab Francs) lacks any of the savoury, herbal, or blackberry notes you mention. Of course the it is a much younger wine, from much younger vines, but it's nowhere near as enticing as your description of the Clau de Nell, which I must track down.
10/17/21, 5:57 AM - My 'problems' with the Baudry Grolleau could well be down to how young the wine was (as an aside although it didn't really improve it didn't fall apart over 4 nights, just re-corked & put back in my fairly basic wine fridge). I agree Bernard / Mathieu are great wine makers & I have enjoyed their whites as well as their reds. I can't really claim to have the experience to project how a wine will develop from a young bottle, especially with an untried grape! There are CT entries for the Baudry Grolleau & Chris Kissack has a review of the 2019 (he likes it more than me...and god knows he knows more than I do, so is probably a better judge!), but there is no mention of it on the Baudry website nor on Wine-searcher. In the UK Lea & Sandman have it for sale, but I'd never seen it before in England or in Paris... p.s. I hope the 'bottle variation' isn't in the CdN Cab Franc 2014 as I have a full case on order... Still, these are happy days for Loire lovers, n'est pas ?
10/19/21, 7:16 AM - Happy to hear that about the CdN Cab Franc 2014! I feel obliged to make a little correction. I left a small glass' worth if the Baudry Grolleau in the bottle (no argon / vacuum pump etc) and tried it again on Sunday afternoon (5 or 6 days after opening) & it had eventually started to improve, the sweetness receding and showing a bit more of something like the wild blackberry fruit you describe... so I think it is an age issue! (p.s. Sorry for hogging your comments section)
10/17/21, 6:03 AM - I think you are bang on the money here! I'm kicking myself for my lack of patience, as I only have one bottle left from a case. The bottles drunk over the last few years, I've found very precise, correct & perfectly enjoyable, but they also tasted very, very young & perhaps lacking a bit of depth & complexity....I'll savour my final bottle! (p.s. I should have paid more attention to John Gilman's drink dates of 2020 - 2060 ! He knew all along ;)
10/7/21, 4:38 AM - It is splendid isn't it ! - and as you suggest with a long, long life ahead of it...
10/4/21, 11:33 AM - Edit: mistook a case price for a bottle - still a great note !
9/21/21, 3:34 AM - Great descriptive note ! I had always thought Les Grezeaux needed / demanded more time, but almost by accident ended up with several bottles out of bond, so thought I would take a look. I agree it is remarkably drinkable in an 'inky & refreshing' way.... esp. on the second day.
9/12/21, 2:05 PM - I finished a case of this earlier this summer, drunk over the prior 18 months, and had no problems with any bottles. I didn't leave any notes on CT, but your positive description of #7 fits my experience of them well. This does nothing to unravel your dilemma, of that I am aware... Maybe some heat exposure in shipping or at some point prior to your purchase ? I don't know if or how this can effect some bottles in a case and not others. (...Although I've definitely had cases of white Burgundy with a couple of poxed bottle while the others were fine)
9/10/21, 3:30 AM - I tried my first. bottle of this last night, and remember reading your review - which made me smile & peaked my (already considerable) interest. I thought comparisons to Clos Rouegard & winning the lottery were likely hyperbole....but no, my god this really is so elegant & complete - already ! I only have limited experience with Rougeard, but fell in love at first sip - as I did with this. If other vintages & other cuvées live up to this ( & it's the 'entry level' cuvée, no ?) it really will be like winning the lottery !!
8/24/21, 1:06 PM - Sorry to hear this Sleepyhaus. I had a bottle of the Domaine de la Chevalerie 'Vin de Garde' 2005 last year, and although not quite ready (LOTS of tannin & plenty of acidity), it was plenty enjoyable & showed plenty of potential. Sucks that you've had a whole case that hasn't drunk well...I don't know how representative, but your comments are enough to put me off buying a bottle of this I was just contemplating...
8/1/21, 11:19 AM - Ouch !
7/25/21, 11:19 AM - '...on par with a bottle of '10 from prior week'. You lucky sod ;)
7/17/21, 3:35 AM - It was probably a reminder to myself that I didn't like it - as I was clearing sold or otherwise drunk or discarded bottles & cases from my CT 'Cellar'. However, it did stick in my mind as a particularly un-refreshing & charmless bottle of wine. Hubert de Bouard de Laforest & 2010 is a combination I would now avoid like (pick your unpleasant infectious diseases). But, yes, your point re. the time lapse is completely fair...
6/20/21, 5:20 AM - I haven't heard much about Cotat & Pox, I think there is (much) less to worry about with top shelf Sancerre than with white Burgundy.... The 2018 Cotat Beaujeau, IMHO, was absolutely singing about this time a year ago & still great (i.e. not shut up shop for a long nap) a couple of months back. So was interesting to read your note that this was showing a bit tight. I do think that while these wines can age for 10 years + without any problem, recent hotter vintages (I presume the reason) are making them more enjoyable on release or soon after...
5/23/21, 10:20 AM - Does the note apply to the white or the red ?
5/9/21, 4:28 PM - Sure it is all somewhat subjective, but this is nothing like my experience of this wine - esp. the 'stewed' fruit - which is something I particularly don't like & thus am fairly 'alert' to....possibly a bad bottle ?
4/30/21, 1:46 AM - Still drinking beautifully in 2021.
4/27/21, 10:32 AM - Great note - I wasn't thinking of breaching these for years, but I think I a going to have to pull one soon!
4/27/21, 10:26 AM - Was it that bad ?! J&B describe Clos des Quatre Vents as 'pretty, feminine...this most elegant of wines' - I was tempted, but Porty Margaux is not what I am after :(
3/27/21, 5:52 AM - That is useful to know! I bought a few of these last week - IB at a fairly good price - and was thinking about cancelling my order on the 2 I haven't had delivered, but your comment gives me hope. I think (premox notwithstanding) its the white Burgundy vintage that I've had the most pleasure from recently & have not had problems with Chavy in the past.I will update if I have better luck with the next bottle🤞
4/9/21, 1:21 PM - mi Lord Rodney, I pulled another bottle from storage & am enjoying it now! Apologies for the spurious generalisation from my premoxed bottle - on the basis of the current one I agree with your description - stellar & showing healthy maturity (...& thank f*#k, I am no where near rich enough to be pouring 30 - 40 quid down the sink with any regularity - but this one seems like another cracking 2010 from Chavy :) ....drinking well, with good tension playing off the 'healthy maturity' & proper PC intensity...
4/6/21, 6:08 AM - Your review sums up well my experience of this wine (from a 375) - however, I have really enjoyed most other 2018 Cru Beaujolais....
3/30/21, 6:35 AM - Nice informative note, thanks ! This was really voluptuous on its fruit not long after release, but then seemed to shut down hard - I was thinking of pulling out another bottle, but after reading your note I will leave the rest of my case alone for a few more years
3/28/21, 9:26 AM - IMHO this is definitely one to hold, you may be better with a 2015 / 2016 even though they are younger...2015 was fun if a bit wild a couple of years ago, this is much more serious and much less ready, even now. I gotta check out the i Custodi Pistus!
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
