Grand Bordeaux 2003 horizontal tasting (Fribourg): Bordeaux 2003 vintage horizontal hosted by a private collector and moderated by Jean-Marc Quarin. Main observations: 1/ Average quality is acceptable, but weighted down by various low-lights, esp. on the right bank. 2/ In general a tannic vintage, lacking balance. 3/ Top 3 wines were Lafite, Mouton and Margaux (all 95). See the tasting story for a complete overview and additional vintage comments.

Tasting note:
Aging notes dominate with only restrained dark fruit. Faint cardboard notes blur the picture, intensifying. On the palate more clearly corked.

Makes one wish they still made wine of this caliber. Full bodied, concentrated flavors of plum and cherry.

acidic. Not as complex as I would have hoped based on all the hype.

A nice Taittinger, yes. Probably could use more bottle age. But from my experience I've actually preferred other vintages for drink-ability and complexity.... 04, 02, 06 all come to mind. of course the 96 as well but... that is in another league altogether, best Taittinger I've had by a wide margin.

this seems a bit less refined. based on the reviews i was expecting some fireworks. nope.

the almond brioche and toasted almond and burnt almond and almond cake and almond cookies and almond tart and back to burnt almond and toasted almond..... almond this and that is all I'm getting. oi! I like almonds but please.

OK but wait, no almond milk )) finish a bit short and woody.

Hot mess, no typicity, pure ugly blend.. Disappointed with this wine and this producer. Would prefer an honest wine that presents the vintage.
  • shifter commented:

11/20/23, 9:20 PM - There can be some VA in some of these caused by a poor cork.

Forey has been making very good wines in recent years. Unfortunately this wine, which has some positive aspects, is not one of them. Plenty of dark fruits in a medium-full body, but deficient acidity makes the wine taste stretched and deprives it of any freshness.
  • shifter commented:

8/29/23, 8:21 PM - Odd. Haven't noticed that in 5 bottles. Best one tonight firing on all cylinders. Perhaps an off bottle you sampled?

This surprised me. I was disappointed on PnP, a thin acid bomb, but this was much much better on Day 2. Unmistakably Chambolle fruit - weightless on the palate but with layers of lavender, sandalwood, baking spice and black fruit. Really solid village showing - it compared favorably to the 2019 Dujac I had recently. Definitely needs more time but I like where it's headed. As to price, I paid $80 USD for it. Maybe it's a sign of the times but I'm thrilled whenever I pay <$100 for Burgundy and it delivers.
  • shifter commented:

12/18/22, 5:37 PM - True, but I just had it side by side with the Felettig CM VV and the Felettig was hands down better at $40. Doesn't make this a bad wine, but I just think there's better value available.

A little tight at opening, developed nicely. overall I'd be very happy to drink regularly, but not necessarily at the $45/bottle price point. Notes of raspberries and lavender as the bottle opened up.
  • shifter commented:

flawed
PnP small glass, recork into the fridge. First glass reveals just a hint of lemon zest, marzipan, honey. So weightless with a beguiling depth. Palate is much more open than previous bottles at this stage, but still very tight and only showing a fraction of the potential. So very tart, the acid overwhelms the finish.

After 3 hours in the fridge it's integrated better, drinks very nicely on the palate, but still overwhelming acid on the finish. More time and all the fruit is gone. This is definitely flawed.
  • shifter commented:

11/25/22, 9:11 AM - I've had enough of these to know this bottle was off. I opened another one yesterday after this one wasn't showing and it was much more typical. Also, left this bottle corked in the fridge last night and today it's no longer backwards, but has a musty smell and aftertaste. Definitely flawed.

Very sweet, but very balanced. Lots of backed pears, peaches and apricots. Rich and luscious with a long, tangy finish. Paired with blue cheese, but it didn't seem right. Perhaps a fruit tart/pie would be best.
  • shifter commented:

8/6/22, 8:31 PM - Blue cheese might be too funky. This doesn't have enough botrytis for that. It's pure fruit. Pairing is better with some smooth hard cheese.

Beautiful garnet color. Mature nose of dried rose petals and sour cherry. Palate is pleasant, more mature notes and a simple finish. This is at peak or slightly past.

In a merchant line up. Very primary with pretty red fruit, discrete earthy aromas after some coaxing. I struggle with tasting notes that say this is already drinkable. Yes it is from a structural point of view, but there is not much aroma beyond simple red fruit. For that experience, you can buy a 30$ NZ Pinot. Why waste your money on a Burgundy 1er Cru? Having had this wine with more age, I know what it can do. This nie 2017 will be no different. Drinking 88-90 today, but will be 93-94 once mature, that is after 2030.

Blind, I would have called this (incorrectly) an extracted New World pinot -- Oregon/Washington? Pomegranate on the nose. A lush, full bodied fruit forward palette confirms the nose. Don't buy this. It's not an excellent Gevrey at a surprising price point. There may be some red fruit wrapped in floral notes. The palate definitely doesn't have dark fruit on a backbone of acidity with a lingering finish. Save your money and buy some NSG or something from Chile.

Decided to see how this wine is doing. Opened a 375 ml. The wine is way too young and definitely needs time to resolve. Fairly reductive on opening. A small hint of bandaid that we thought perhaps was Brett blew off by day 2. Fruit profile is primary and dark. Mostly cherry pie filling, some blackberry, and cassis. A hint of vanilla and oak. Decent acidity. Well structured. "Old school" in many respects, but the extract seems a little agressive as the tannins are a bit clunky. Should resolve in time. Definitely hold.
  • shifter commented:

8/16/20, 9:41 PM - Not as much bandaid as inner tube. Had developed already over the past few months. Should do well with 2-3 years in the cellar.

12.4%. Sweet tropical fruits on the nose, zingy acidity in the mouth. This has picked up some weight and roundness since my last bottle. Could probably have been good drinking for another 3-5 years properly stored. Unfortunately, my last bottle; and to my knowledge there has never been another Edelzwicker with as low abv as this vintage.

Decanted and drank slowly over 3 hours. Cork fell apart. Classic burgundy on the nose from the moment it was opened. Nose was more expressive than the palate early. Started to open up after an hour, but really started to shine at 2 hours. Unfortunately shortly thereafter it completely faded and lost all fruit on the nose and became tart on the palate. Undrinkable after that. Enjoy it early.
  • shifter commented:

12/7/19, 7:01 PM - No insights. Purchased from a reputable dealer recently. I do have another 2 bottles. Will see if any difference.
