Amazing nose - orchard fruit, almost too ripe but not - peaches with fleeting hints of lychee and pineapple. The nose also shows strong mineral elements, and hints of the savory. The palate is interesting, and not least because it has nothing to do with the nose. There is no fruit left! It's rocky and savory, and with the right amount of powerful acidity. More complex on the nose than in the mouth, but long and intense, and works very well with basically everything on our table, from beef tartare with mustard to the last tomatoes with fresh goat cheese to Swedish meatballs with lingonberries and pickled cukes. Excellent.

Big nose of peaches, pollen, florals, minerals. This isn't subtle - quite a bruiser. The palate is even bigger, and a bit rougher - peach, broth, salty, brown, bitter. Shows some heat. Finish is brown, salty, minerals and acid. Nose - 4.5/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 0.5/2 = 13/20

Terrific wine, in prime pleasure zone. Starts off lean and fiercely mineral but widens in the glass with delicious peachy fruit, only slightly burnished with age.

Huge petrol nose on opening. Zack calls this "a mineral explosion". Over the course of dinner, the petrol recedes and more peachy fruit emerges. Petrol and minerality stay with the wine through the night. Good energy here, too. L'Apricio with Zack and Jeremy.

From a magnum - medium gold in color, pool toy aroma, a big blast of acidity to the point where the sweetness is completely obscured. Distinctly Austrian riesling - delicious, interesting and food-friendly. If I had more I would hold for another five or ten years....the structure is there, and this may turn into an umami freakshow.

Light in style like the 2004 tasted the same evening. But this one I didn't catch as a riesling. Perfumed on the nose, but with great intensity and length. Just as impressive as the 2004.

From Magnum: Pretty sweet aromas of dark rich pear with intense zippy white pepper spicies and lemon edged petrol quality. Vibrant rich mouthfeel, a dry wine with just a bare hint of sweetness. Loaded with spices and so well balanced. At the tail end of drinking window. Really enjoupued this wine, but likely time to drink up over next couple of years.

Wine Tasting #1: If you can pick this up for as cheap as I did ($22) it's well worth it. Still going strong despite the odds. Wonderful citrus, honey & melon aromas and a cool, crisp finish. A delicious way to start the night.

Vin-forum offline tasting (Norway, Trondheim): Pure Riesling nose, intense and dense. Very high acid levels with a somewhat burning finish. It isn't entirely out of balance, but a very good classical, yet powerful, Riesling. Identical notes after four hours, it hadn't moved in any direction.. (is that good or bad?)

Very pale gold; green apple and hints of lemony/lime citrus on the nose, which seemed restrained and tight. This really opened up on the palate, however, with layers of apple and citrus, strong acidity, mineral, talc. Very intense and focused flavors. Literally mouth-watering on the long, juicy finish. Two bottles left that'll rest for a few more years.

Tokyo Offline for Dale and Betsy and Joe (Shunju): Dale brought this wine, which I was excited to try, as we get very poor distribution of Austrian wines here in Tokyo. Although the lighting was a little tough for assessing color, this seemed to have a little more yellow depth than I would have expected and I couldn’t find even a tinge of green. Thanks to the inadequacies of Dale and Betsy’s minibar fridge, this was served a little warmer than it might have been otherwise…and that was a good thing. Nose was very tight, with little escaping other than a strong, persistent mineral character. Palate was dominated by unadulterated – but completely balanced – acid with a thrillingly precise spine of lime fruit, backed up by a little apple and even a little peach roundness as the wine opened up more. Perfectly in balance, bracingly refreshing. I’d love to try this again, but with more than a few years of additional age. Performed admirably with the shima-aji sashimi and the omelet(!), and held up surprisingly well against the smoked belly pork. With ten years and some developed and slightly rounder riesling flavors, this would have sung with the smoked pork. WWOTN for me. Thanks Dale and Betsy!

The nose is quite exotic with strong notes of tropical fruits (bananas, pineapples) and solid mineral undercurrent. The palate is wildly acidic and grabs ahold of my mouth and won't let go. This is so much bigger and in your face than a German Riesling it is hard to imagine that they are the same grape. The acid is so unrestrained by anything (sugar, Malo, wood) that you must be prepared for it, but I liked it. It paired well with a "gourmet" meal of macaroni and cheese with hotdogs in it.

Dark yellow. Mature fruit on the nose. Rich and generous. More unctuous mouth feeling after a while. High acidity. Guessed it was a Zind-Humbrecht.

Stunning. The color was advanced, but the wine was great. Gave it more time in the decanter than I bargained for, maybe 2.5 hrs.

Took some hours to really open up. Ended with complex minerality, lightly honeyed, decent acidity, big wine. In a good spot now, but no hurry.

My first foray into an awesome Austrian tasting (Seattle, WA, USA): My notes were thin at this point. Awesomely juicy, spicy and long.
