Bottle pop & poured for lunch. Delicious aroma of rusty apple pie, strawberries and dusty cherries accompanying that smell of bleeding flesh. Also a note of camphor. This degree of complexity belongs to a 1st Cru and not just a Givry one. On the palate it is simpler, highlighting its still sharp acidity, its medium-bodied wine texture with a moderate persistence. Direct and warm in the throat. No depth. Null aftertaste. On the other hand pretty Gevrey today. Clearly a winter character wine. That's why I understood roi Henri IV.

Nice dark red color with an orange rim plus some good aromatics. On the palate it is a lovely mature burgundy with good berry fruit, including some cherry and cranberry, with a little sour component. Like my notes from a year ago, it has good tannic grip to it with proper acidity. The minerality is pleasant too. It is not a rich wine, but it has a good mouthfeel and a medium finish. While fully mature, I think these wines will age just fine for a few more years.

Watching the NFL divisional playoffs with Walter (Vikings vs 49'ers). Walter makes a delicious 3 mushroom "impossible" beef Burgundy, so I open this. Garnet red in color. Violets, kirsch and a bit of sweet tea on the nose. In the mouth, I taste cherries, raspberries and yes, mushrooms. Medium body, with nice acidity and still a touch of tannin. In a good spot right now and should remain there for a few more years.

Summer 2014 Partying: A lovely wine that shows its ripe vintage character with a delicious wild strawberry and saturated raspberry flavor profile and similar notes on the nose. At the same time, its Côte Chalonnaise roots can be seen in its tight frame and somewhat rustic finish. It has already caused me to seek out more red wines from Givry and Mercurey. In contention for WOTN.

The wine is clear and bright with a medium garnet colour and presence of legs. The nose is clean and developing, showing medium intensity aromas of mushrooms, forest floor, liquorice, dry roses, leather, ripe strawberries and red cherries. The wine is dry in the mouth with a medium acidity. It has medium- slightly coarse tannins and a medium alcohol. It has a medium body and medium+ intensity flavours of mushrooms, liquorice, dry roses, leather and red cherries. The finish is medium+.
It is a very good quality wine with a nice finish and a very good fruit concentration, it also shows a good degree of complexity, but it needs a bit more of acidity to be fresher. Can drink now, but it has enough fruit concentration to develop a bit more of complexity over the next 3-5 years.
Fabuleux!

Tasted after the 2010, which was a hard act to follow. The 2009 displays rich, ripe aromas of black plum, blackberry, and a hint of roasted meat. Relatively fat on the palate with flavors of ripe dark stone fruit and a touch of rock and saline as well. Finishes a bit broad -- needs a touch more acid for my taste. This is very ripe and concentrated -- a little bit of 2003 showing here. Reminds me of NSG. Steak wine.
Tonight, I very much preferred the 2010 to the 2009.

Tasted non blind. Opened and slow-O for about 90 minutes before serving.
Garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of potpourri, a hint of smoke, a little tar, black berries and black cherries. Flavors of black berries and black cherries. Medium to bright acidity, medium to firm tannin, medium to full body. Drink now with some air or continue to hold.

sauvage nose and palate - displaying northern rhone characteristics - st. joseph/croze hermitage. cured meats, sous bois, iodine, crushed rock, black fruits. quite rustic and bold. still very tannic - will require some patience for this to settle down - i wouldn't revisit for another 5-7 yrs. this is a fabulous wine.

Bobby Kacher Tasting and Dinner (Knightsbridge - Northbrook IL): Tasting. Red and black fruit on nose with some dense spice. Same fruit on palate, moderate spice, then somewhat tannic, slightly bitter finish. Good balance of rustic style and fruit-forward 2009 character.

91+ pts

A very interesting Burgundy with an old world terroir, classic style, but a surprisingly nice new world fruit expression. Med bodied plus, nice pinot fruit flavors with lots of terroir, kirsch, forest floor, and a tad of nuttiness on the palate. Good long pleasing finish. Acidic, still a bit tight & tannic, but showing a good balance and integration for an early wine. Would be good by itself or with a variety of dishes! Should improve even more with 2-3 years of cellaring. BTW, I've been hearing rumors of French wine makers that're styling their wine with more (new World) fruit expression, and have recently come across that in some 2008 Bourdeaux, but this is my first Burgundy showing this characteristic. I'll be looking for more like it!!! :-)

S1 visits Dallas! Opening Cantata. (Urbano Cafe, Dallas, Texas): WIML90

91-92 pts
