Small pour. The nose has some dark fruit, cedar and cigar box. The palate was filled more bright reddish fruit and some cedar notes. At peak and very pretty. Enjoy!

Decanted about an hour before dinner, a nice grilled steak. Dark purple in the glass, average nose of dark fruits, a little forest and leather. Thinner than I recalled without the big mouthfeel typical of Groth & Napa cabs. Did I wait too long?

Clear deep ruby color. Clean nose of pronounced intensity with aromas stewed fruit, plums, cured meat, leather, dark chocolate, cedar. Wine is fully developed. On the palate it is dry with medium plus acidity, medium tannins, high alcohol l, medium minus body, medium plus flavor intensity of prunes, dried blackberries, game, meat. Finish is medium minus. Good wine. Drink now, not worth to age any longer

Beautiful acidity in this wine (Medium). Medium nose of Black fruit (Blackberry, black cherry, Black plum), Tannins are soft and well integrated. Some aging characteristics of Lead pencil, leather and stewed fruit. Finish was long with some hint of pepper on the backend. Overall - this wine is very good and has aged beautifully. That said, I would drink now, I don't think it can get any better and may start losing that acid.

Overall note from a Groth tasting, presented by the winery at the Yacht Club in Lillydale. The pours were small, but sufficient to understand each wine. 2013 Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignonn – This comes across as big and a bit green. This seems quite young, is quite simple, and got me thinking that they better age well to justify the price. Impression - 88 2014 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – This is a step up from the regular cabernet. At least there is some interest. Full bodied with spice, dark fruit, earth and chocolate. I still don’t get the price tag though. Impression - 89. 2008 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – This wine was boring and tired. This wine does not taste like it is meant to age, as it should be singing right now. Impression - 87 2009 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – A slightly different flavor profile from the 2008, but also dull and tired. I should have asked the presenters if they decanted and how long. This was either over decanted or is not aging well. Impression - 87 2010 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – Ok, this tastes like an acceptable cabernet. Our discussion at the table was that it just tastes “cabby”, and I would expect more from Napa and this producer. Impression - 88

P&P. Medium to dark purple in the glass. The nose is big, forward, and pretty with ripe blue fruit, cassis, and a hint of oak. On the palate the fruit is deep if a bit restrained but present and enjoyable, with flavors of blueberry and plum, with cassis, nutmeg, and a bit of oak that’s not overwhelming at all. Last of 3 bottles stored in a cool cellar since purchase in 2012.
Consistent with last tasting in 5/2014 "Black cherry, red currants, plum on nose. On palate, medium body, medium acidity, long finish with nice drying tannins. Flavor profile on palate similar to the nose."
This wine has aged well but clearly at peak. Didn't note a score but it paired grilled with Grilled Filet Mignon.

Garnet in color. Decanted for an hour which was a mistake. Drank better as a pop and pour. I drank this over a 2 hour period. Originally had a decent nose. As time went on the nose became muted and with that the mid palate thinned out and the finish shortened. I have drank the 2008, 2010, and 2012 Groth cabernet and I am a fan. I drank this 3 years ago and it was much better then. I had the wine manager at the Newport Beach Vons tell me that you should consume California cab in under 8 years. While that might not be true of a mountain or reserve cab, I drank two 2007's and a 2008 this week and all seemed a couple years past there prime. Drink this wine now.

Decanted 3 hours. I thought it had the best nose of the 6 2008's we tasted -- really pronounced aromatics. Well-balanced and I'll call it classic Napa cab on the palate. Re-bottled after a total of 5 hours in the decanter and then pumped, the last couple of glasses were still quite good two days later (though everything was understandably less intense). This wine can still age from here, no problem.

Had my first glass at cellar temperature, no decant. Very enjoyable. I've had many Groth vintages, this one is not the best but is above average. The wine looks ruby colored. It smells like mineral. It tastes like grapefruit and mineral. The body is medium/full. The wine finishes medium with medium acidity.

popped and poured - probably would have benefited from at least an hour decant - pretty ruby solid color to the rim, cranberry, stewed fruit on the nose, noticeable oak too. Some acid attack, high toned red fruit and tannin at first taste, better integrated over the course of dinner. Finish seemed a bit disjointed to me at first and it too settled down over the evening. Nice wine - needed a decant to let it shine.

They didn't spend $ for the oak at this price point, and you're left with gorgeous fruit and tannin ,slightly blending , but holding their own. with some very subtle secondary components. It's a medium finish, and a delightful cab , for a good price.

Great cab for the price. Just lush and delicious. Great big fruit forward napa cab. Great finish and nicely integrated tannins. This is really good and for the money it has become one of my favorites. I think that it evens compares with the reserve which is a much higher price point. Is the reserve better? Yes but just a bit. For the money buy a couple of these instead.
Nice cab, 1st try, stood up well to smoked meat. Toasty oak and vanilla on the nose, pretty solid and balanced, nothing out of whack and classic oakville cab flavors. Sweet tannins for sure, nice balance for salty food, surprising to me but works to my taste. Solid QPR, happy i have more.

This is showing so much better than the last one I had over two years ago. Am constantly reminded at how important a few extra years of bottle age can be. This is rich, decadent and has nothing to apologize for. There's a slight sugary/sweet lift on the finish that may appeal to some. Good for the price at <$40.

I haven't been a fan of this particular bottling during earlier taste (once in Napa upon release and last year with friends (bald bull). However, last night we opened a bottle and let it decant for a while prior to enjoying with cheeses and fruit and it was great. The wine possesses Oakville character (cedar, lead, tobacco) and features dark black and purple fruit that is in perfect balance with the medium frame and moderate acidity. This is not a Caymus type wine but rather a Mondavi Reserve like bottling without all of the horsepower. Cheers!

Opened, but did not decant, 2 hours before serving with grilled filet mignon. Dark red color. Black cherry, red currants, plum on nose. On palate, medium body, medium acidity, long finish with nice drying tannins. Flavor profile on palate similar to the nose. Really enjoyed tonight and has improved since last tasting when this was a simpler wine. 92-93 range. Re-buy.

Very well balanced and restrained cab from Oakville. Really nice dark fruits, dried plum, a touch of leather, fine grained tannins and medium acidity. This has a nice long finish that paints the back of the tongue with dark crushed cherries.

For some reason Groth is becoming one of my favorites. Dried cherry and blackberry. Smooth and weighty on the palate and really hits its mark all the way through. Long lasting finish and I also think this could benefit from cellaring even a few more years (5-10).

Solid Napa cab. Strong oak influence, but I think they do this style in a good way. Big wine with plenty of fruit. I think the oak and fruit style gives the impression of more depth than there really is, but I always like the wine.

One of the better sub $40 Napa cabs. Medium-bodied, with cherry, blackberry, pencil shavings and burnt toast. Firm tannins and some heat on the finish that will hopefully recede into the background over the next few years. A good everyday wine that has more character than many in this range.

In a word...Delicious. An outstanding Napa cab that hits many of the right notes. Ripe fruit, tasty oak giving off flavors of vanilla, smoke and hints of wood. All wrapped in firm tannins that guide you to a long, lingering finish that has a touch too much heat. Still a baby, this should be even better a few years down the road.

From 1.5L. drank at the Pierce cabin on Lake Opinicon. Blackberry, spice, tobacco. Clove and nutmeg aromas. Really approachable balance right from pnp. Lots of spice in the aromas. Quite the iron and mineral expression on the palate. Nice level of complexity right out the gate.

Maybe I should have decanted this and allowed it to open up more before drinking. This wine seemed very tight and young. I could tell that it has great structure and a strong backbone, but it was a little ruff around the edges. Unlike the other reviews here, I think this wine will develop well for another 2/6 years. I'm giving this wine an unofficial rating of 89 for now, but I can see this developing into a 92/93 point wine in 2/3 years. I have several more bottles, as well as some '09; I'll be letting them rest in the cellar.

Dark and brooding with plenty of blue, black, and red fruit and heavy oak aromas jumping from the glass. More of the same on the palate and with firm tannins that carry through the finish. Lots of oak and tannin on this one. While it is showing well now, clearly this wine will improve over the next 3-5 years and has enough acidity to maybe make the 10 year mark. 91-93 pts. PJP 2012.

Drinks well now. Plenty of dark fruit and lighter tannins. Some vanilla or oak may be present, but not a whole lot. Also not terribly complex, but very good. I don't know how well this will age. The tannins and alcohol are in balance, but not blockbusters, and in several years may be too muted and rate a lower score. I'd make this my go-to bottle only for the next few years.

Winner! Give it time to evolve in your cellar, or decant and enjoy it now. I see another 1-2 points with a little time on the side. I have never tried the Reserve, but now I am curious and will have to try it. I would expect a bigger, full bodied, more concentrated, intense wine.

Nose or red/black infused raspberries with some creamy Kirsch. Palate is dense with the raspberries, boysenberries and Kirsch. I get a mouth-coating full throttle texture that carries with it tons of goodness. Reminds me of one of my past favorites, Kuleto cabernet. Somewhat drying and big boned with tannins in full control; that control might put some off, but in 5 years they will understand its 'adolescent tantrums' were all necessary. Finish is true and long. Acidity deft.I get some cedar, tea and soy. Certainly not everyone's cup of Cab, but given some patience, this should reward nicely. Needs at least an hour decant to show itself. It's ok not to be everything to everyone. Really it is.

This is from a screw capped 375ml bottle (no air space) I poured off on 4/9 and opined about then.
Nice ruby red. Cherry/berry candied nose leading into fruity mid palate w/medium tannins that clamp down just a little. OK w/a little alcohol edge on the somewhat short finish.. Nothing memorable here but nothing offensive either. May get better in a year or two but doubt it will merit the high scores WineEnthusiast or Suckling gave it.
For now it's an 87/88. Pricey for what it's showing at the moment and for the $30-$50 company it finds itself in with there are dozens of Washington cabs: Woodward canyon, OwenRoe, Ch.Ste.Michelle/CanoeRidge, ColumbiaCrest reserves/WalterClore, Barnard Griffin/RSV cabs, Abeja, Januik, AndrewWill/TwoBlondes, MarkRyan, SevenHills, Milbrandt/2009 Estates/CabernetSauvignon, 07/'08/'09 Zerba, DesertWind Ruah($16) and several Cali cabs such as: Chappellet, Keenan, V. Sattui, SequoiaGrove, FloraSprings, WhitehallLane, that are offering more refinement, stuffing, flavor, aging potential or some combination thereof. Shouldn't Oakville put on a better show? Well, maybe not since most of the truly thrilling juice coming out of there is in the $75-200 range. I think I'll shut up for now.

A nice oaky nose. Tart berries and lots of vanilla. I will wait to see if the oak integrates and the mid palate fills in with a few more years age. It's a great drink if you can get it around the 35.00 mark.

This showed some menthol and somewhat vegetal tones right out of the bottle and even after the 2nd day the wine felt somewhat astringent and austere. Might just need more time to come around, but glad I didn't get too much of this.

Fat and tannic with heavy black & red cherry components (bitter cherry pit) and vanillin oak more evident than anything else. Not complex at this point but drinkable with a steak or burger/trimmings. The color in the glass is deep crimson NOT black for those who are colorblind or have been hitting the pipe once too often.
From Berkeley Wine Co. New Jersey: "Tightly wound, firmly tannic, full bodied and dense. Chewy and extracted, this is a touch rustic but also deep, complex and concentrated." This is a more apt descriptor but without the "complexity".
It may get a bit better in 3-4 years but it is nowhere the high scores Suckling or Wine Enthusiast have given it. Wine Spectator is closer, as the scoring goes and I usually enjoy fat rich and ripe styles if they head in the direction of Caymus, which they don't often for what the Caymus is going for. It got a little more palatable after two hours. I've poured off half into a 375 screwcap to see what happens in a week or so.

This wine needs time. On PNP, it was a simple wine. With ~ 1.5 hours in the decanter and over a few hours it gained weight and was a nice bottle of wine - didn't take notes but recall red cherry / cassis / black raspberry & menthol on nose & palate. Medium body with nice mouthfeel. Went great with a steak. Won't touch remaining bottles to 2014+. 90-91 range.

Day 1: Tannin and oak bomb. Decent fruit but at this point it's kind of overwhelmed by the tannins. Short finish. Not complex. Day 2: Stored overnight at cellar temperature, vacuum sealed. Not much change. Day 3: Again, stored overnight in cellar, vacuum sealed. What a transformation! The tannins and oak have finally calmed down and are in balance with the fruit. Smooth with cherry and vanilla flavors. Really, really nice now. Rating is based on Day 3. Decant this monster in cellar for maybe a day before drinking.

Black, very. Edges of crimson. Nose of violets and ripe black currants. Palate shows a pretty amazing amount of richness. Black cassis infused with some Kirsch and blackberries. Hints of sweetness, oak, smoke, Asian spice, graphite and new leather. Balance is near perfect with tannins large but in-check. The strength of this wine is its ability to cross your palate with nimbleness and dexterity usually found in wines twice to 3x the price. Delicious and pure (and I NEVER say delicious), this is really one of the best Groth Napa Cabs I have had since I first visited the winery in 1991. A venerable QPR (In the true sense of the word) at $33.

One of the better vintages for Groth that I have remembered, full bodied, solid fruit on the front, midpalate has good flavor follow through, finish was ok not great, fruit forward style, could use some balance but that could come with time, still early but approachable. Low 90s with good upside. -S

Ripe cherry and blackberry aromas. A blend of sweet and pungent barrel spice shows proper in the aromas. Without too much overt woodiness. Suave palate texture with above average structure. This is a move in the right direction for Groth. Spot on, acting more like the Oakville show pony, it should be.

Very tight right now. Medium-weight palate with flavors of black cherry, blackberry, black olive, stems, and mint. Firm tannins. Needs quite a bit of time. There was a lack of depth and balance, though. Not sure this will flesh out to be a good value.

Nice rich color, lively nose of concentrated fruit and hint of eggplant. The body is a bit thin but carries a burst of dark fruit on the mid palate; heat on the back end and through the finish. Round tannins provide support to a nicely integrated wine. There are better wines for the money.

All wrapped in firm tannins that guide you to a long, lingering finish that has a touch too much heat. Still a baby, this should be even better a few years down the road.
