Medium depth of colour; a very fragrant nose of cherry and orange peel; intense and savoury on the palate, with a very long finish. The youthful fruit has gone but there is still a streak of acidity. It perhaps needs a few more years to develop the complexity of a fully mature wine.

It was given 4 hour if air before serving. Beautiful aromatics with flowers, red fruit, coffee beans, and brown spice. It was so bright, vivid and vibrant with linear red fruit sweetness. It slowly climbed up to the apex throughout the evening. It has entered its early drinking window with clear upside.

This is a fabulous wine for it's intoxicating perfume and absolutely refined and classy texture. Quite structured still and it took an hour to open and then showed perfectly ripe cherry fruit combined with great cut and subtle power. This reeks of Grand Cru quality and shows a healthy dose of Chambertin minerals on the energetic and succulent finish. Luscious and fine but way young and not yet fully integrated at least from my bottles purchased on release. First of a case and hold, hold, hold but incredible potential. 96++

A private tasting and dinner (Restaurant Fitzgerald *, Rotterdam, NL): Powerful and complete and youthful, spicy and gamey, perhaps a bit muffled - or is it the comparison with the extremely fragrant DRC Richebourg 2000 which accompanied it? Wonderful balance and freshness, lively and elegant, wonderful weight of blue and black fruit, perfect charge of tannins, long and refined finish.

THAT Rousseau night (IT Shanghai): This was my favorite of the night and it represents the pinnacle of Burgundy winemaking - laser precision and utmost perfection. I never knew and imagined how such knife edge balance could be achieved with such power and finesse. Dark fruit, orange peel, iron and red plums take center stage while dried violets, sage, blood orange, smoke and dark spices persist on the palate. Lovely mineral base supporting the underlying lush sweet fruit with a touch of earth. Wonderfully complexed and rich with layers of silky textures pointing towards a long harmonious finish with silky tannins. In short, it is simply stupendous. While drinking fantastically today, would be most privileged to try this again in 5 to 10 years as it gets even more complexed and rounded out.

This needed decanting and lots of time in the glass before it really showed itself. Medium-bodied and very fine with flavors of perfectly ripe cherries and classic Gevrey minerals. The finish has this perfect mineral crunch with a lovely tautness and fantastic purity. It needs time to develop that haunting maturity this wine is known for but it's definitely in it's early drinking window with a long decant. Just fabulous material here and such a "fine" wine. 97+

While the wine was still primary, it still showed spice, herbs, wild berries, nail polish and candied fruit. Not very showy tonight but it exhibited hint of elegance and balance. Like the 02 CSJ that was poured tonight, dont touch your 02 Rousseau.

The colour of this 2002 Chambertin was a medium cherry red with a nose of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose and touches of hung game and earth. The palate was medium weight with lovely layers of flavour and a fine texture and drive. There was initially fine persistence with a touch of minerality in the balance of the wine. However it did shut down somewhat at the finish compared to 99 or 93 in a way that held it back from the top note of Chambertins I have had.

Jasper Rousseau Chambertin. Lively from the get-go with touch of stem, cream and coffee. Lifted aromatics. Really long finish then nail polish city. Sadly feels a little lightweight next to 2005.

Drank at La Paulee Gala Dinner. This wine was a resounding success both against a lot of incredible wines and in its own right. It was all the things you would expect from such a magistral grand cru: it was balanced on a knife’s edge, finer than silk, perfectly weighted, and fixed with a finish to die for. What I love about Rousseau more than any other producer is his ability to bring a unique texture to his wine that makes it so enjoyable. This was beautiful.

Sommelier Appreciation Dinner 2019 (The Brown Residence): Since the 1996 Vogue 1er is corked, Reginald generously open this memorable bottle. Breathtakingly beautiful nose displaying perfectly ripe pure red and black fruit, very floral, caramel, dark spices, sap and mineral. Beautifully integrated palate, layers upon layer of decadent yet pure red fruit, silky and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, fully integrated tannins a seamless long finish and caramel and mineral at the end. It has reached the youthful pick but can easily last for another half century. Exceptional showing.

2nd Annual Sommelier Appreciation Dinner (Undisclosed Location): Sweet dulce de leche and dark chocolate on the nose, cedary on the entry but then a core of dark berry fruit emerges. Still a whole lotta tannin but refined and brushed like merino wool, and gets finer and finer as it sits in the glass, eventually turning to silk while the fruit picks up a slightly brothy savor. Not much else besides Chambertin can be this refined and robust, simultaneously. Still, it is very primary, the sweet fruit very young and far behind other '02s in development (many of which have shed all the sweet fat and are now closed or closing) - this will need many years to show any kind of maturity, but a mighty fine treat today just the same.
small pour. earthy red fruits with a strong iron/mineral note, and hints of cherries and florals on the nose, but seems closed/somewhat impenetrable and still too young.

(Blind tasting) Full, rich, very complex nose of incredible depth. Perfume and forest floor. Exotic spice, gently oaky and dill. Smokey coffee hints inbedded in luxurious bleuberry-raspberry fruit. Developed but not fully mature. No meatiness, but sous-bois definitely present. Lovely, lovely nose. Concentrated, dense, fully harmonius palate. Fullish, spicy style. Sweet petit fruits rouges. Slightly coffe notes from oak only adds complexity and richness. Clearly WOTN. The length, the splendid grip, the harmony. Grand vin! Since we knew that one of us has two or three bottles of this wine, we guessed right quite quickly. Good to have the competition of 2008 Grivot Richebourg and 2010 JJ Trapet Chambertin in the same flight. The superiority of this bottle was absolutely clear for me. Best Burg I've tasted together with 2000 La Tache!

Long birthday lunch at Noble Rot (Noble Rot, Wellington, NZ): Served non-blind from magnum. More primary, purple than any of the three Roumiers. Again, an attractive bouquet, but more earth-bound, less ethereal and floral, than the Roumiers. Earth, dry underbrush, ripe red and black cherries, barbequed, smoky meats and iron ore. On palate, beautiful minerality. Mainly dark berries and earth, wrapped around a core of iron. The sense of much more volume and mid palate weight than the Roumiers, particularly the 1996 or 2001. No real Gevrey signature funky or feral element I could see. Accessible and enjoyable on the day but with years ahead of it, of course. I'm sure it'll be even better in another 10+ years.

2002 Red Burgundy - Single Blind: Initially difficult to get a good read on this glass. Big black cherry and cool blueberry fruit on the nose with more air. Some good rusticity coming through already. Palate is delicious with tannin integrating nicely. Sweet cherry though the finish. Incorrectly called this the Roumier Bonnes Mares.

Best bottle (@ Weindorf Kirchheim): Wonderful deep red color. Very elegant, youthful/developing nose, fruit, soil, iron. It was really infanticide to open this bottle at the moment. The great potential is always present, but not yet fully developed. Fine, very elegant, enormous pressure, complex aromas, still driven by primary fruit. Very long and fine finish. Great potential for 20+ years, where this wine will definitively improve.

Light red. Perfumed, incredible nose of truffles, sous bois, and red Pinot fruit. Lithe, dances in the mouth, with penetrating flavors of red berry and dried herbs. Silky tannins. Long, thought-provoking finish. The 2002 Chambertin has years to go, but it is epic right now.

I have seen this wine a few times before and this bottle wasn’t a great representation of what it should be. It seemed raw and overtly oaky. It was sweet and vinous with good depth but I suspect some low level tca was f*cking around with the wine.

Sydney Burgundy Celebration Gala Dinner: Another short taste but another awesome wine. More restrained aromatically than the 2006 but layered and serious with earth, spices and red cherry. The palate is where this really shines, with genuinely serious structure and imposing tannins that are not out of place with the clean dark fruit and a great core of acid. Super impressive now but give it time if you can!

The least good (if there is such a wine at this level) of the 10 Rousseau Chambertins tasted tonight. Good nose showing a fantastic fruit profile. On the palate this is long & stony with tart and a bit sour red cherries and some red currant fruit present. Good minerallity, but not really up to the level the other Rousseaus showed tonight. Still, a really good wine, silky and long.

Clear bright ruby. Decanted briefly, this was absolutely singing on the nose with layers and layers of fresh red fruits and some elements of soil and spice. Still completely primary.

Slightly, slightly corked...
In spite of that you could detect some plum, red fruit and spices. But very mute.

Quite a deep colour; an attractive, ripe nose of red fruits and spice; a full, quite rich, very elegant palate with a complex mix of fruit and secondary notes; very long. A little tannin on the finish, which is not obtrusive. Excellent and profound. Drinking well now, but should last for years.

Redder fruit profile than the 01. More seductive and supple on the palate. So sweet and persistent.

Pure, airey and graceful nose of red fruit, dried roses, truffles and some earth. Classic power without weight on the palate. Reserved at first, but kept building over the 4 hours we drank it. Long finish with verve and spice.

Giovanissimo, leggermente meno esplosivo del CSJ ma più vigoroso e prospettico

Initially, typically gorgeous, silky, seductive and elegant profile of all great Rousseau chambertins. However, as it aired it seemed to be a bit awkward at this stage and not as exciting as one would expect. Perhaps just going through an awkward teenage moment?

Quite open and ready. Intense and vibrant. Great mouth, good length. Proper Pinot nose without much complexity. Think this will get more interesting with time.

We had a 2002 tasting yesterday, and this "left over" made it into tonight's dinner. Gorgeous and beautiful, if slightly smaller scaled than expected. Always a pleasure.

Clear bright ruby. Decanted briefly, this was absolutely singing on the nose with layers and layers of fresh red fruits and some elements of soil and spice. Still completely primary. On the palate, very harmonious. Not a big wine per se. Structured and serious yet a tad more seductive than other vintages I've tried. A zen wine. Drink now or hold for 5-10 years.

Absolutely stunning wine. Still young and primary but so well balanced, never ending, great complexity with real Gevrey character, but structured more like a RSV. Great intensity and depth with a fineness so rarely achieved. Top notch.

Great tasting Domaine Armand Rousseau (De Librije(***), Zwolle, The Netherlands): Quite evolved nose (surprisingly!). Considerable length, but in the mouth so rich, velvety. Superb wine. Great class. Now as highly rated as the Clos-de-Beze, but I wonder which one has the greater future. As for now, I would guess the Clos-de-Beze, but with these wines you never know. 19,5

Client Dinner (L'Etranger): Medium red color, no signs of aging. Initially a touch of oak on nose but disappeared. Quite open and still primary with lots of red fruits and spices on the nose. Good acidity but no hard edges, drinking really well now but lots more to come.
