Deep, dark, inky red colour. Blue fruits on nose with a little vanilla. Rounded mouthfeel. Flavours of musk, cranberry, sarsaparilla along with a bit of vanilla. A bit of drying tannin on the end. Very enjoyable and drinking well.

Dark blackberry and currant fruit with a lovey plum and chocolate note. The palate has great concentration of black fruit, dark bitter chocolate, spicy notes and plenty of freshness on the finish. Nice balance, good length. Excellent.

Blackberry, Chinese five spice and a touch of oak on the nose. Slightly softer in the mouth but dark fruits and oak. Drying tannins. Still a big wine that has plenty of time left. Wait a year or two for the next.

We were trying to pair wines to go with Roman Lamb (cooked in the juices, piquant tomato base, just falls off the bone).
Penfold Bin 28 Syrah 2010 – we previously tried a Penfold Max Syrah 2 years old with some lamb wrapped in foil and done over a wood fire which worked. The Bin 28 with Roman lamb did not. We had also previously paired the Bin 28 with Lamb, slow-cooked with Moorish Spices & Buttermilk which also worked, so there really are no rules and the only way to tell is through trial and error. The wine itself had plenty of black fruits (black cherry, plum), liquorish sweetness, coffee & chocolate. It was that herby sage/star anise/liquorish/clove/vanilla hint that clashed with the Roman lamb. Score 89
2006 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste – a lovely smooth left bank Pauillac. 15 years and punching. Oaky with tobacco, blackberry and leather. It was OK with the lamb but we think a right bank with more Merlot would be done better. Score 90
2010 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Reserva – this went best so we then tried it again (2nd bottle, a week later, same lamb recipe) and added a 2009 Bodegas y Viñedos del Contino Rioja Contino Reserva (both Score 90). This time we knew to open both early (8 hours and decanted before serving). Both are outstanding years for Rioja with 2010 thought to be ahead. Both are super smooth but side by side, the Imperial was distinctly woodier. The Contino had more on the nose and was a tad sweeter on the palate. The Imperial was more tobacco and dried leaves. The Contino was more Fig and Strawberry. These differences are not great and you’d probably only notice this with them side by side. Both went beautifully with the Roman lamb. We had some of the first bottle of Imperial left over (cork left in). After a week, it had developed oxidative notes – wet mustiness on the nose, OK on the palate but with less fruit.
All the wines above are at the peak of their curve ie drink now.

Black and blue fruits, meat juices, coffee grounds, vanilla and chocolate. Enjoyable especially with tonight’s dinner of roast beef, but feels almost past it, a bit lifeless. I’ve had many better Bin 28s.
Boom, best bottle yet from this case. Wow, this is drinking so, so well at this age. Does wine under screw cap age well? This clearly demonstrates hell yes.
Still very dark, impenetrable colour, the youthful vibrant purples gone. Nose is powerful and complex. At lot of dark fruit, particularly plums this time. The vanilla oak is obviously there, but not in a bad way, fits in nicely with the other elements of the palate. Finish is long and smooth. A great wine that indeed rewards patient cellaring. This has decades left in it in my opinion.
Wow aging so slowly under screwcap. Dark berries and vanilla from the oak on the nose. Palate is still quite grippy but rounded out compare to last tasting. For my taster, I’d say this be drinking best from 2025.

Still almost black. Nose of blue and black fruit (nothing red-fruited though) with a moderate amount of charred oak. Not hugely complex or evolving over two nights. Big and brash. Rather aggressive on the finish--more due to (?added) acidity than to tannin. Really difficult to tell where this will go in time. I didn't especially enjoy the encounter.
Dense, dark, inky red colour. Expressive nose - eucalyptus, black fruits and cassis. Lovely long fresh finish. Black fruits, mint and cassis. Long finish. Still youthful - plenty of time left.

Classic Penfolds red, dark purple in the glass. Aging well, could go at least another 5 years if stored correctly. Loads of plum, oak and resounding acidity. Flavour profile shows its South Australian credentials. Has some savoury complexity too, spices, dark cherry and slight coffee notes. Medium finish. Yum. 90+

Classic Penfolds Shiraz. Dark, dense and loaded with flavors of cassis, blackberry preserves, warm spices and grippy underlying acidity. At a great drinking plateau, likely will be good for several more years.
Purchased upon release on a tip from a friend (who has a better palate than most professional wine critics) for $19.99, the 2010 Penfolds Bin 28 is worth five times that price. Amazing! 93 and improving.

PAGE 156 MEAT Lamb, Slow-cooked with Moorish Spices, Buttermilk Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2006, 2010 88 for the 2006 and 89 for the 2010 We tasted all the wines blind and nobody thought they were the same wine. Both opened 5 hours before drinking. A screwtop on the 2006 and cork on the 2010. Colour – both very deep but the 2006 was clearly more brown. Plenty of black fruits (also cherry & liquorish sweetness, coffee & chocolate) in both, stronger in the 2010. Sediment in both. The 2006 needs to be drunk within the next year.

A full bodied rich wine that is drinking smooth with balanced and integrated flavors of plum and prune fruit, background green pepper, soft cedar and subdued nutmeg and black pepper spices. The medium length finish is smooth and clean with piney notes. This definitely has 5+ more good years of drinking to go. It was an OK pairing with our grilled pork chops.

Dark cherry juice color with an aromatic nose of sweet red dark fruits, licorice, fresh coffee grinds, some brambly characteristics and a hint of toasty oak. The palate is very medium full-bodied, well balanced, fruit-forward, with a good amount of fresh and lively acidity which makes this all too easy to drink. The flavor components include black cherries, red plum, fresh ripe strawberries, with secondary layer of medium roast coffee, dark chocolate, wet forest floor, rich vanilla oak, a hint of black pepper and a quick flash of minerality towards the finish that became more intensified with more aeration. It is drinking exceedingly well now at 10 years of age but should continue to drink well for at least the midterm. This was once sourced from a single (Kalimna) vineyard but now it is classified as a multi-regional South Australian Shiraz. It did not become a benchmark wine and earned a place in the coveted Langston’s “Excellent” classification status by mere coincidence. Rather, it was the combination of careful fruit selection; skillful winemaking and long tradition of excellence that went into this iconic label as well as in all their other middle and upper-tier "Bin" range that this renowned brand is noted for.

Dark violet color. It still feels vibrant and young, but it has mellowed a lot since release and a lot of sediment in the bottle. Very powerful and peppery, and you have to give it at least an hour to air. Out of the bottle it was outright unpleasantly square and tart, then becoming silky harmonious and almost soft. One of the more dramatic changes i have experienced.

Dense, deep, dark red colour with a touch of brown on the edge. Tight nose - musk, vanilla and dark fruits. Flavours of dark berries, cherry, vanilla, spice and leather. Smooth with a little touch of acid at the end. Still youthful - opened up over an hour. Plenty of life left in this wine. Very enjoyable.

Decent nose of slightly ripe dark fruit. Medium to full bodied, smooth and supple, showing beautiful dark tart fruit with blackberries in the fore and a slightly matured/mellow aspect. Good acidic structure with gentle tannins and a bit of heat on the finish. Still quite youthful. Not so complex but delicious indeed.

Gorgeous dark red color. Almost impenetrable with a ruby red edge. Nose has the typical American oak aromas and some dark berries and exotic spices like allspice and cinnamon. Palate is full and quite rounded. Some grippy tannins, but those have softened enough now that I’d be happy to just enjoy this without and food. This wine is just at the beginning of its drinking window in my opinion and has a long life ahead. Wish I had two cases.

Dark core with ruby ring. Beautiful nose of black currant, black pepper, roasted hazelnut, leaf, vanilla pod and five spicies. Improve with some decanting. All flavours are well mellowed on the palate, super fine and smooth tannis with long lingering finish of mocha. Love it! Drinking too quick!

NobleRottersSydney - even year Shiraz (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney): [DavidH] {screwcap, 14.5%} Developing nose; raisin, blackberry jam, and a chippy-oak, vanilla quality to the aromas. The palate is warm, and a bit stewed, in the 21st century Penfolds manner. Baked shiraz flavours, warm in character, a bit light for structure, with low/medium acidity and low-level powdery tannins. Even the mid-palate is pretty soft after the initial burst of flavours; this might age a few more years but I can’t see true complexity on the horizon. Stopped being a truly cellar-worthy wine last century I think. (Actually I think Penfolds has been on a downhill run ever since Duval left.) But much better than a 2012 I had recently.

A wine of substance. If you seek an example of why the 2010 vintage rates a 10, check this out. The current CT consensus is that there's no need to wait before you open a bottle, and I agree. A great qpr and it's still available at an bargain price. 92+
This wine is ready to be drunk now. I scored it 91 this time. It did improve from my previous 90 points. Very well integrated. I had it with pork ribs, Top Sirloin steaks and chicken wings. I am buying more.

Blackberry, dark cherry, plum, tar, toasty oak, black pepper. Full-minus body. Medium-plus acidity. Medium tannins. Medium-long finish. Tannins have resolved a lot since my last bottle, unfortunately, this was my last.
Ripe jammy black fruits, blackberry, black cherry, plum. spice, oak, vanilla, chocolate, mint, herbal. Meaty notes showing on the palate. Very ripe and dense, feels heavy with oak.

Dark brown/red colour. Aroma of Grilled meat, mushroom and some sweat. Sweet black fruits finishing with pepper and vegemite toast. Fine but leathery tannin. Very enjoyable wine. Pleasantly smooth and fruity for a wine of this age.
Clear, deep, ruby with narrow ruby rim. Clean, medium (+), developing nose of blackberry, cedar, popcorn, tar and vanilla. Dry, medium acid (?), medium tannin, medium (+) alcohol, medium (+) body, medium (+) intensity flavours of blackberry, damson, vanilla and tar. Long length.
Very good, this is a ripe Barossa style shiraz, tannins very well managed and overall surprisingly developed already. Can drink now, and will hold for another 5 + years, but will it improve?
Penfolds has certainly brought forward the drinking window on its Bin series over the last decade, lucky given the complete switch to screwcap, otherwise these wines may never have been ready...

There's a heap of fruit on the nose: blackberries, blueberries, currants and raspberry, with some subtle oak and meaty notes. It's a powerful, perfumed nose, but a really nice balance. The palate has firm but unobtrusive tannins, leading to a medium+ length finish that'a still fruit driven. This is a keeper. Whilst it's fine now, I think it's for a long life ahead of it. Didn't get great scores (JH94, CM90+) but I like where it's going.
Nice wine. Not smokey, just big and bold. Paired fantastically with grilled lamb. It did throw a WHOLE lot of sediment, nearly one tablespoon worth, so it would be advisable to inspect and decant if necessary.

Real deep dark purple. Light on the edges. Legs are softer than expected. Nose is earthy shrooms and oak not a lot of fruit On the palate a bit sharp and disjointed. Hour of air time very little fruit strong tannins not as I remember the other bottles. Not going to score right now and come back to it tomorrow. See if it comes together.
Very Good. Clear, deep, ruby with legs. Clean, medium (+) developing nose of ripe plum, blackberry, vanilla and earth. Dry, medium acidity, medium refined tannins (surprising!?), medium (+) alcohol (14.5%), medium (+) body, medium (+) flavour intensity with ripe plum, blackberry, black cherry, vanilla and earth. Long finish. Very Good to Outstanding, with excellent balance, intensity and almost enough complexity to put it in the latter bracket. Excellent typicity of a South Australian (primarily Barossa) shiraz. Can drink now, but has the potential for further aging. Screwcap.

Day 1: Decanted 2 hours, lots of grainy sediment. Big wine...very dark, deep black fruit, tons of black pepper, roasted meat. Reminds me more of a savory Washington Syrah than an Australian Shiraz. Will save a half bottle and explore tomorrow night. As of right now, I'd say this needs more time.
Day 2: Much more fruit now apparent, with less of the savory/peppery notes. Blackberry, pepper, a touch of vanilla and mocha on the back. Quite good, but definitely could use more bottle age. Drink 2018-2025

Consistent with my notes from a couple of years ago. This was one of the stars of the night in our blind tasting group. The color is deep, dark ruby, almost purple, with thick, glass-staining legs and now showing a hint of garnet on the rim. The nose is clean, with medium (+) to pronounced black fruit, and oak-influenced aromas of vanilla and sweet baking spices. The nose also has a distinctive streak of eucalyptus, mint and dried herbs. The nose is still developing. The palate is dry, but with big sweet black and red fruit at the forefront. The acidity is medium; the tannins are medium (+) and nicely rounded. The alcohol is high at 14.5%, but does not appear hot. The mouthfeel is quite smooth and lush thanks to high extraction. This wine is full-bodied, with pronounced flavor intensity and long finish. It is drinking very well now and appears to have plenty of aging potential. None of the tasters thought that it already had 6 years of age. This is a super value and is drinking well above its mid-20s price point. WS 90

N: Medium (+) intensity Primary black fruit in the shape of cassis and some secondary aroma in the shape of bitter chocolate and spice. Youthful on the nose for me P: Dry. same as nose but with added blackberry and very noticeable eucalyptus. Medium (+) to pronounced intensity and long finish. Medium acid, full body, medium (+) tannin and high alcohol.
C: BLIC? All but the complexity boxes ticked. Very Good Quality. Drink now or leave to age further.

Getting better. A really lovely balanced wine now with a great intensity to it. It doesn't have the longest finish but it makes up for it in the mid palate. Softening off and integrating nicely so drink now but I'm keen to see where this is headed..

Tumman punainen.

P&P. Day 1 this was all over the top fruit and acid. No fun to drink, particularly with a tired palate. Day 2 things had chilled out. Blackberry and plum fruit, mocha coffee, nice acidity and light tannin. Drinks like I would expect of this bottling. Day 1 tells me it needs some more time, or a decent decant (say that 5 times fast!). Drink now (with air) - 2022.

This little trickster was a little shy on the nose, and showed minimal legs in the glass, suggesting it might be very tame. The firm tannins, pronounced oak, and lush fruit were a pleasant surprise. More power than suggested by the nose. Medium finish.

Showing all the best characteristics of an Australian Shiraz: ripe, rich, big. deep and flavorful. Classic Shiraz in-your-face flavors of blackcurrant, olive, licorice, spice and cedar. Very rich, concentrated and bold with a full body, firm structure, chewy texture and great depth. Typical shiraz roughness and grip appears on the long finish.

Fresh and good medium+ bodied, exhibits blackberry, dark cherry and spice. Still prominence oak with flavours of coconut and vanilla oak. Some structure and it has got enough acidity to lift the weight. Long finish with spicy notes and roasted coffee. Good QPR and Bin 28 remains the benchmark for mid-price range Aussie Shiraz.

- Brick color - BIG vintage for Kalimna. Can't believe the lack lustre ratings here. Black plum in colour, beautiful floral and savoury nose with big robust black fruits and layers of oak. Lots of oak notes on this wine like sweet chocolate, arrack an vanilla. Really extracted with big, sweet fruit in the finish. Also a little warmth from alcohol. If you like manipulated wines this is great but if you seek origin, variety and personality in a wine you should go elsewhere.

This was one of the stars of the night in my book, and a close second favorite of the panel. The color is deep, dark ruby, almost purple, with thick, glass-staining legs. The nose is clean, with pronounced Amercan oak-influenced aromas of vanilla and coconut (one year in new American oak). After an hour, the aromas evolve into black fruit, anise, violets. The nose is developing. (After a week it finally shows its age with savory olive brine, sun-dried tomato, mediterranean herbs and leather aromas, which all add character.) The palate is dry, but with big sweet black and red fruit at the forefront. The acidity is medium to medium (+), the tannins are medium (+) to pronounced (-). The alcohol is medium (+) at 14.5%. The mouthfeel is quite smooth and lush thanks to high extraction. This wine is medium (+) to full in body, flavor intensity and finish. This is drinking well now but is likely to improve with a couple more years of age. Most tasters thought it was only 1-2 years old on the first night, although it starts to show its age after a week. A super value, this is drinking well above its price point. WS 90

Very dark purple. The nose screems New World with obvious American oak character, melted liquorice, blueberry and blackberry fruit, sweet spices and dark chocolate, but the typical to an aussie shiraz eycalyptus character is barely noticeable here. Could easily pass for a Napa cabernet. Full-bodied, creamy-textured with firm tannins of excellent quality, big and ripe fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Served blind it can be guessed as a more expensive wine (a friend guessed a wine at the €100 price point) due to the high fruit concentration and luxurious oak and though oak is evident at this stage, the structure and richness are there to guarantee a long aging potential. Very voluptuous wine.

Very dense, opaque black color of blackcurrant juice concentrate. Rich and dark-toned nose with opulent aromas of ripe blackberries, savory and quite toasty wood character, sweet chocolate oak, juicy plums and little bit of peppery spice. The wine is dense, chewy and full-bodied on the palate with concentrated and ripe yet quite dry and savory flavors of black cherries, peppery spice, sweet dark berries, bitter dark chocolate, some sweeter oaky coconut tones and a little bit of smoke. Overall the wine feels quite structured with moderate acidity and firm medium tannins, and although ripe, it doesn't go wandering in the jammy territory. The finish is long, ripe and robust with quite pronounced spicy bitterness, black pepper, earthy tones, sweet blackberries, some dark chocolate, a little bit of cherry marmalade and a hint of caramel.
A good and drinkable, but also very monolithic and ponderous Shiraz. Overall this is a pretty good effort for a big wine, but I must admit that this kind of viscous, oak-heavy fruit bomb isn't just my cup of tea. The wine is structured and it isn't too sweet nor jammy, which is nice, but it still is what it is - excessively big and too damn oaky Aussie red. Perhaps 10 years in a cellar might help the wine lose that baby fat and integrate the wood tones with the fruit? I guess the wine is priced according to its quality at 25,20€ if you like these kinds of monster wines.
Popped and poured @ Scratchley's Newcastle. Inky black glass staining colours, purple rim. Nice dark fruits up front, black cherries, blackberry and blueberry. Enjoyable mid palate, minor acidity refreshes with chalky, powdery tannins washing over the finish (These resolved within an hour open for an enjoyable medium finish).
Nice easy pour over dinner, well suited to my chilli marinara and aged fillet and, value at this price point, hard to ignore.
NB: Decanting to remove sediment advisable.

agressive black fruit and firms tannins. Alot of acid for a red. A bit to big and bold for my taste. This might mellow over the next few years, but at $20, not sure if you want to store it for that long. Very fruit forward, with an almost plummy and sandalwood flavor to compliment the red raspberries. It's softer than I expected and not so big on the midpalate. I don't think it's going to last too long, especially with the lack of tannic structure.

Bright ruby red. Purple berries and plums, pen ink, black pepper and vanilla on the nose. A bit subdued up front but spicy, juicy, acidic, smooth fruit kicks in and carries thru the palate. Actually more spicy than fruity, with mint, pepper mill, cloves, and mocha. Not typical but still a fruitbomb and I need to try more of the bins.

Ruby red and purple, certainly looks young, but looks concentrated. A pronounced nose of vanilla oak and blackberry jam. The palate has good structure and mouthfeel, balanced tannin and really good length where the fruit lifts quite a bit as it lingers on. Safe to say this will only get better.

Penfolds Tasting (DEPs): The Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz is a deep ruby wine with long legs. The nose features vanilla and blackberry. Soft and thick in the mouth, with blackberry, raspberry, and oak. Ends with a decent finish of blackberry and oak. My least favorite of the 5 from Penfolds, but this is still a solid wine and shows at well above its price point.

Whilst tannic and not ready for drinking, this Bin 28 has it all: coconut, cinnamon, raspberry, prunes, plum, blackberry and oak. There is the slightest hint of mint somewhere, too, but not in anywhere near the cncentration that many Australian reds possess. It finishes quite long with a tongue full of chalky tannins, but the fruit keeping its head above water. Good.

(Tasting at Magill Estate) Dark ruby in glass with a purple rim. Deep, rich dark florals on the nose, with small tight berries. Highly textural, full and balanced. Seamless. Juicy dark fruit shines through, along with peppery leather. Characteristic Bin 28 minty eucalypts on the finish. Well built - will probably keep well. Drink again in 5 years.

A very good Bin 28. It has strong and appealing aroma and the palate is finely boned for a wine of this style. Flavours of sweet plum and ripe black cherry. Acidity is quite strong, but more than balanced by the deep fruit sweetness. Tannins are soft and the finish is quite long. 91+
Tasted again and the second time I found it a lot heavier, oaky and hard going. I think this will be a good one for the cellar if you like the style. I'm not so sure if it's a good choice for early drinking. But I guess, like all the other Bins, it's not supposed to be for that anyway. 90++

Even under screwcap this is starting to develop some aged warm climate (added acid) shiraz aromas. Greasepaint etc.
It’s a concentrated wine though an unexpected lightness (great balance) at least on first tasting, it gets heavier with drinking.
A Winter warmer!
Definitely Penfolds. Well crafted. Probably best drinking over the next decade or more.
14.5%, screwcap

Yum. 90+

WS 90

Dense purple ink colour. Leather and earth aroma, plum, date and black cherry. Full body with long finish. Smooth flavour but the tannin is a bit jarring. I haven't tasted this vintage previously but I think it could do with a few more years.

Intense deep purple colour, very inky, paints your hole glass. Decanted for 3+ hours. Lovely seductive aromas of mulberry, creme de cassis, toasted oak and marzipan. Very nice barrel, suppose better percentage of new oak used. On the palate, pleasant freshness, nice mouthfeel, juicy, chewy and meaty tannins, medium acidy. Round and spicy. Medium finish. Still a baby. Drink 2018 - 2025

The finish powers on with plenty of acidity and freshness to drive it along another 5+ years easy. Possibly Best Kalimna to date.

Good.
