words cannot do justice to this wine. Smooth tannins, rich fruit, intense flavors and a bouquet that lept from the glass. Years ahead for this wine. Wish i had more. Hard to imagine a better cndp.

Lovely wine. But I've been a fan of Beaucastel since I bought a case of the 1990 - last bottle in 2020. This isn't quite in the same league as the 1990 but is delicious nevertheless. Still a slight purple-hue but turning to deep crimson red. Dripping with legs Floral + meaty + tarry + red berry notes on the nose with sweet red fruit on the palate, with soft tannins and a crisp finish.
Well balanced with no hint of the 14.5%. Not sure of the assemblage of grape varieties.
Very drinkable now and paired nicely with a sausage pasta dish.
Day 2 Tertiary notes on the nose - spicy wood and mushrooms, smooth with Kirsch notes on the palate. Lacking the depth and vibrancy of day 1.
I'm no expert, but based on previous vintages I'd say this is in the second half of its drinking window.
I have cases of the '12, '13, '14, '15 and '16, '17 but stopped buying after that as I prefer lower alcohol wines now, and I'm not sure I'll be alive by the time the later vintages will ready and to my taste!!

A dark colour, and dark, smoky fruit, slightly reticent and not quite as full as expected, at least initially, although it did open up with time and air. Other bottles have been better, but perhaps this one was not quite fully developed.

Slight nose of violet and mineral. Deep wine with grilled plum and vanilla. Dried herbs on finish. An intense and beautiful wine with plenty of life left.
This bottle was a joy to taste. We had it alongside PJA La Chappelle from the same year and the superior longevity of this wine was fully on display. Structured and tannic with a good core of fruit. This wine probably needs 3-5 years to truly peak out. 95+

What a delicious wine! Dark purple, no real nose (but my nose has been dead for years!), smokey flavors with a creamy texture. Great stuff. Decanted 1-2 hours.

This has flavours of fruit-cake and spice, and is attractive now but with plenty of potential for the future. It improved with air and became deeper and more complex. A profound wine.

This full-bodied, classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape is in an excellent phase at the moment. The wine is still fruity, acidic and tannic, but the tannins have already softened and integrated. The wine is displaying layers of marvelous notes of ripe dark fruits, pine needles, herbs and wet stone. The overall impression is deep, solemn and balanced. However, there is some feel of a burnt taste in the wine. But as a whole, the wine now seems to be on its peak.

Pnp. Deep mulberry red. Lovely nose of fresh garrigue, sandalwood, red and black berries, fresh tarragon and some char. Lovely and smooth on the palate! Sweet, ripe berry and fleshy fruits. Dried and fresh herbs. Lots of spice and wood notes. Soft tannins, tingly acidity. Long, dry finish. Elegant, lovely balance and quite delicious. Classic example of a mature Beaucastel!

PNP. Similar to my last note, this is enjoyable for the dark, concentrated fruit. Shows more Mouvedre than Grenache to me with some nice mineral along with the dark fruit. A-

Decanted for 90 minutes. This didn’t really seem like a 12 year old wine to me, mainly primary aromas and flavours. Lots of dark fruit and some garrigue. Nice enough but I don’t see how the review giving it 99 points is for the same wine, unless I had an off bottle!

Splash decanted 30 minutes and enjoyed over the next 2 hours. Dark red color, still quite primary but plenty of dark ripe fruit. A concentrated wine that is mostly about the dark fruits but also some nice mineral elements as well. Enjoyable now with some air but should develop further nuance with time. A-

Mid-red colour; excellent wine, with ripe redcurrant/plum fruit; elegant, slightly spicy, medium to full palate with a little tannin on the finish. This is good to drink now but should keep well.

Decanted for over an hour. Very perfumed - lots of black olive, savory meats, iron and dark plum. Similar flavors on the palate, very smooth, with medium tannins. Interestingly, upon first opening I didn't especially care for the taste profile. But with air this transformed into a beautiful wine.

An unbelievable bottle, drinking incredibly superb! One of the best, if the not best, Beaucastel we have had in awhile. Layers of mouth watering flavors with a beautiful finish that goes on for ever. This is that unicorn bottle that we all seek.

Decanted and filtered to remove the plentiful solids in the bottle. Started drinking about 30 minutes later. This wine seems fully developed and very delicious. There is plenty of dark red and black fruit flavors galore. Great mouthfeel and aftertaste. I believe the professional critics were very wrong about this wine. I rocks!

Needed about an hour to open/warm up from cellar temp. Once it did it was a delight, with red and black fruit coupled with an earthy meatiness and a hint of smoke. I'm not sure I agree with the community drinking window closing in 2026 as this was still pretty youthful overall, but its in a good spot now so if you were to drink over the next 3 years it wouldn't be a crime.

Monthly Tasting Group HWS; Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape (By VD and @ VD): Beautiful bouquet with ripe red berries, garrigue and some rustic impressions. On the palate juicy and elegant with cherries, licorice, laurel, still youthful and also some pleasant development, meaty and lush. In fact a beautiful wine in its young maturity stage.

This is still a very fine, but I think that time has started to flatten out some its flavours, and it is losing structure. The bouquet is still impressive, but the mouthfeel is going. In other words, don't hold it for much longer.

Not as thin as the last bottle; seemed to benefit from an extra 30m or so of air in decanter. The gnats in our yard agreed as they drown themselves repeatedly. I ate at least a couple, and they paired well.

drank over 8 hours Oxblood in color. Sangre, iodine, some stewed fruit still showing through. Unctuous. Grippy. Oak, some vanilla. Leather. Fruit fairly integrated. Tastes like the nose. Longish finish. Really subtle and smooth as the night progressed. Beautiful wine. In its window. Don't think it will get much better. Still has time though.

Drank with Wagyu steaks on my birthday with family. Definitely lived up to the event. Still deep purple in color no bricking seen; medium plus clarity. Nose was expressive with blackberry and licorice with some savory notes underneath. Body was medium plus with round dark fruit and great balance between medium tannins and acidity with a long finish. Drinking very well with no concern to hurry on the next bottle.

Reliable C9dP: plum, prune, cherry, earthy note, soft fig, touch of heat, but not unpleasant, medium body, smooth long finish. In general the heat of C9dP is driving me away from these wines, prefer Italians.

4th Saturday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (MM’s): From magnum, popped and poured. Clearly quite young in this format, with notes of hay, black fruit and herbs; definitely has a garrigue overtone. Medium-bodied. Red fruit and hay qualities on the palate with a hint of that mourvedre-driven gaminess carrying through the finish. (R&D)

We had a vertical of 04, 06, 08 and 11. 06 was drinking the smoothest, best without food - but the 11 was overall the best balanced. 08 was the most tannic, but still drinking great. All four were great. Some nice subtle differences.
Tasty but not phenomenal. Classic Beaucastel notes of dark fruit, wood and plum. Drank with a 2001 Lynch Bages and it totally held its own. Wouldn’t run out and buy this vintage but was very satisfying with the mixed grill on this night.
Dark pomegranate red in colour. Lots of red berry fruit, sandlewood, licorice, garrigue, red plum and dusty lane on the nose. Medium full bodied, lots of fruit extract that comes across as ripe and sweet, still some unresolved yet fine tannins and slightly high alcohol. The flavours mirror the nose with dried red berry fruit, cedar, red plum skins, garrigue and licorice. If anything detracts it comes across as a bit woody. Long, tangy, fruity finish.
Pnp. Dark purple. Cassis, black fruits, plum and leather. Fresh with purity of fruit. Full bodied with great acidity and balance. Sweet tannins and a long finish. Long life still ahead.

Loved this wine. Had with 7 hour lamb. The wine was very full bodied. Big. Lovely fruits. Dark. Drinking well now. I enjoyed two 2009 Chateau Beaucastel this year but this was even better
Elegant and refined but lacks depth. I am at a loss to equate it to anything other than a nice wine. There’s some typical berry with modest minerality.

See my previous note, not a powerhouse; very refined, for me the Mourvèdre has the lead, gently earthy, also blackberries, roses and a very elegant backbone till the end, and that takes some time; lovely, elegant.

Tasted as the last bottle of a long tasting. This wine is in an excellent condition at the moment. It is still very fruity and quite tannic, but it is also more balanced, more integrated and more complex than a couple of years ago. The wine is very deep and massive, but also stylish and multidimensional in nature, displaying e.g. notes of blackberries, dark fruits, garrigue, licorice and tar.

This is quite brilliant. It’s a beautiful deep ruby color. Aromatic with leather, smoke and tobacco, plum and black fruit, licorice, fig, and maybe even raisin.
Beautiful smooth mouthfeel with strong tannins (even after 9 years) but balanced with nice acidity. There is black fruit, black pepper, and it’s even a bit earthy on the palate. The finish is clean - maybe a bit hot - but mostly fruit and pepper and lingers around. This is a nearly perfect wine, but it needs more time in the cellar. 96 points.

Medium + ruby. Ripe red and dark fruits in a roasted/stewed Rhone way, melted black licorice, garrigue. Sweet, savory tension on palate, balanced, with a juicy acidity and very fine tannins. Great with a grilled lamb steak

Deep black ruby red. Warm, fragrant, spicy nose. Lots of red berry fruit, an entire bouquet of garrigue, licorice, horse saddle, high toned spices, incense, evergreen bark - already layers of complexity. So Beau! Amazing nose! Full bodied and loaded with sweet, rich tasting, fresh and dried red fruit, cedar, spice, dried herbs, more licorice, lots of tar, and more. Powerful tannins still present front to back. No hollow spots. No blemishes. Crazy good stuff - bordering on holy you-know-what! Especially considering this is so young! Wow! Long, long finish. Exceptional!

Vinturi aerated and decanted for 70 min. Dark red/purple. Pleasant nose of dark berries with hints of prunes and some smokiness. Smooth, medium bodied, much lighter than expected. Tannins restrained but the higher than typical acidity was a surprise and which severely muted blackberry and plum notes. Medium long plum finish provided only brief enjoyment. A simple and disappointing Beaucastel that doesn't seem to have the backbone to improve further.
Enjoyed at Maestro Vegas. Classic Beaucastel - delicious - blackberries, dark currants, light spice, some thyme showing through. Soft mouthfeel, medium body. Medium finish.

January birthdays (and porchetta) (Chicago, IL): I was seriously surprised how much I liked this bottle. It's definitely a big-boned wine with plenty of fruit and structure, but it's also fairly clean and despite the scale, there is still quite a bit of minerality and restraint to it. A bit of kirsch, licorice, and leather but all done without any high-toned alcohol notes, nor jammy over-the-top fruit. Colour me impressed by this -- I'm not generally a CdP fan.

Opened half bottle and drank 1 glass over an hour or two. First night the wine had a big body, lots of dark fruit. Somewhat elegant but there was funk to it. Really didn’t enjoy it. 88 at best. Put the cork back in and put back in the wine fridge. Finished it the next day and the wine was much better. The funk was gone. This could use a few more years in the cellar. That said I get annoyed by the bottle variability of CDP. Not sure I’d buy more of this. The 2006 I had recently was in a much nicer drinking window.

Poor notes, busy dark evening, mostly consumed during outside meal, unfair to score. Darker than usual color, good nose though no secondary aromas yet, seemed more "New World" than usual and was popular with people who primarily drink New World wines. Do expect some modernity in contemporary Beaucastel, and in its defense, solid fruit statement was not overly effusive. Certainly well made, anyway. Clearly has distance to travel (and improve) in terms of aging.

Just opened the wine showed a fragrant bouquet of red fruit, roses and gentle acidity, in the taste the wine was as a ballerina, concentration, persistance, refinement, not power. To be slightly negative I noticed a whiff of unripness. Two days later, tasting the last glass, that was gone. I've bought recently two bottles, each € 25, in Belgium!
Decanted about 90 minutes. Beautiful, smooth wine. Drinking well now with air, but has plenty of time left. 92 from me, 93-94 from Carrie. Glad to have a couple left, and would like to search out some additional vintages.

What a wonderfully svelte and elegant wine! Some Chateau NdPs can be a little monumental, overly assertive in their dense fruit (although, of course, there is nothing wrong with that). This wine, however, with its almost perfumed nose of sweet stalk, cassis, and a variety of spices that I can't find the name for, is restrained, and speaks of quality; taste ditto, delicate, almost Burgundy-like, with great lingering mouthfeel. Only 92 points, because the current system rewards vigour rather than charm.
I would say close to its best now.
Not to be drunk with any sort of food, except soul food.

Highly anticipated drinking this wine, I have my eye in it for years. In color it was very brown with some red not black as others described. The nose was extremely earthy. The taste was multilayered, Seems to get better with each glass, let it decant for about an hour or more.

Decanted at Restaurant 213 in Salisbury MD. Soft leathery fruity nose, hints of oak. On the palate light juicy berries, cherries, oak, and finely integrated tannins. Very classy, velvety. I thought this light to medium bodied wine was a burgundy at first because of the bright berries in the mid palate. Paired beautifully with crab cakes and duck a l'orange.

opened 4 hours before drinking with a Pegau of the same year. Loved both, but so different. Deep purple but more brilliant or clarity; clean fruit and garrigue and spice to the nose. touch of licorice and tobacco mingled with the red fruits in the body. Great balance, medium to soft tannins with good acid structure. Starting to be in a drinking window, it did close down momentarily after opening, but then opened up again by 5 hours out.

This may be a bit in a dumb phase at the moment, but the wine is very impressive anyway. The color is dark. The wine is seductive, full-bodied, powerful and fruity, but somewhat one-dimensional now in its aroma and flavor palette. There is a lot of bourbon vanilla on the nose, while the flavor palette is very much dominated by bramble at the moment. I am looking forward to tasting this after 5 years again.

Robust, expansive, and strikingly clean. Tasted double-blind and thought it too clean to be Old World. The wine seemed to be partially in its traditional dumb (austere) phase, but strangely, did not lack for power. Interesting. Worth holding on to.

From a half. Probably should not have opened this...but glad that I did. Tasted from Grand Cru Burgundy and Bordeaux glasses and the wine showed noticeably better in the latter. A classy and elegant vintage of this iconic wine, its hallmark is a silky (red fruited) texture that dances across the palate. Balanced, complex, and very long. This bottle could have easily aged for ten to twelve years. Beautiful. 93-94.

Obviously a great wine in the making. After 30 minutes or so in the glass one can really sense the raisins and all the almost portlike fruit just waiting to show. Not my type of wine, but one has to respect the winemaking. My third vintage of this wine: 2006, 2007 and 2011.

Agree with many of the notes about having an early drinking window. Off the bat, ready to go notes of blackberries, bbq spice, underbrush and some graphite. Mouth coating smooth entry, some underlying tannin and spice on the palate. Really nice and ready to go. Likely to improve some with time, but ready to go tonight after pouring through a vinturi into a decanter, then consumed over an hour.

From a half, drunk over two days. Rich and opulent bouquet of plum, muddled raspberry, mulberry, cranberry, rhubarb, spring flowers, fresh cracked peppercorn, lavender, herbs, garrigue, smoked charcuterie, rust, and minerals. The attack features a drenching, viscous juiciness with garrigue and pepper accents. The expansive middle coats the entire palate with fruit, earth, and mineral elements. The mouth-watering back features loads of fruit tannin and sturdy grip. The bold finish does not quit.
The most fruit forward and open Beaucastel I have tasted, backed by ample earth and minerality, and it all works nicely! I expected this wine might have been in Beaucastel's typical dumb phase; it was not and I am not sure that this vintage will enter one. I suspect that this will not be particularly long lived vintage. It will likely develop complexities over the next two to four years and it should last through 2025. 93-94.

One hour decant. Dark ruby-purple in colour. Spicy black cherries, red licorice, some kirsch, and herby gumdrops are apparent on the nose. The palate's getting more black cherries, plums, red cassis, sweet brown tobacco, and red licorice; the decant time helped with keeping the tannins in check; some heat at the end, but it ain't intrusive. Medium bodied with a medium-long finish. Nice showing.

Dark purple. Rich, lifted nose of black currant, anise, and mocha. Floral notes and cola in the mouth. Unlike my last bottle, this wine is nicely structured, with a rich, dark finish of considerable length. This is drinking incredibly well and should evolve nicely for 10+ years.

Even though this CdP is not from a spectacular vintage it's still a beautiful wine. Abundant spicy cherry, truffle and earthy aromas. A velvety mouthfeel with an earthy strawberry finish that lasts awhile. Great acid and tannin balance. I'd like to try this again in 5 years.

You can tell this wine would like some more wine, but you don't feel guilty for opening it. Just make sure to give it a proper decant. There's leather in here along with red and black fruit. A surprising amount of pepper which has settled down after several hours.
Paired with marinated flank steak, a hint of the usual and leather with red fruit after a 4 1/2 hour decant. Medium finish and of course still on the early end. Long decant if opened now, very tight upon opening.

Pop and pour from a 375 at Bouchon Yountville. 30 mins air in glass, consumed over an hour. Notes are written from a glass brought back to hotel, out of a chard stem so notes are slightly off. Wine shows a youthfully tight nose and profile, but is approachable. Pine tree branch, underripe white cherries, faint spicebox, herbs. Shows very well and has the capacity to be a really impressive wine based on this early and small tasting.

Like in November, again a chance to taste the 2011 next to the 2013. They seem to be quite similar in style, both quite elegant and subtle with the 2011 unsurprisingly being a bit rounder, more complex and settled. Slightly closed still, showing good grip and again wonderful balance. Great finish. 92-93+

I think 2011 gets a bit lost between the 2010 and 2012 vintages. This is delicious stuff and very accessible for a recent vintage. Classic CDP nose nicely balanced. Don't think this is a 20 year wine but damn good now.

Drank at CDP (2004 - present) dinner at Chez Simo. - On the nose straightforward red and black fruit was present. - On the palate the red & black cherry continued along with cassis, liquorice, a light pepper note (syrah?) and nice complexity. It had a very nice balance and obviously needs more time to grow into what it can be. 91+ and this should only get better with time.

Black currant, rawhide, and mocha on the nose. Surprisingly light and silky in the mouth. A marginal vintage yields a not particularly structured wine. Good now.

Compared to the 2013 darker, more concentrated, richer. Also more weight on the palate, still good balance, fresh, mineral, generous, pretty open. Great length, too. 92-93+

As presented by Francois Perrin... (Chicago, Illinois): 'a Catholic' representation of this wine next to the 2011. 'more open than the 2010.' absolutely, flashes more fruit in the aromas. more giving fruit to the palate but still with exotic pepper, spice, garrigue.
'2010 is to 2011 as 1990 is to 1989.' 2011 and 1989 - wines that find you. 2010 and 1990 - Wines that you must search for. He said it more eloquently, but...

raspberry and plump rustic red plum fruit. a touch of licorice. 'not a particularly heralded vintage.' on the palate the herb and spice really pop. lots of exotic pepper spice on the palate. a little bit of orange zest, orange pepper, almost a gingerbreadiness. wickedly stoney palate, orange vitamin.

Medium bodied, in lighter, early drinking style that focuses on fresh, sweet red fruits and spice, with a sweet, spicy, slightly dusty, garrigue and kirsch finish. There are some tannins remaining to resolve. This could definitely improve with a few years of bottle age.

Bright ruby. Nose is a touch reticent of blackberry and an odd almost plastic component, this opened in the glass to a smokey jammy dark fruit. Entry is broadly tasty with a nice build to a cigar box and spicy finish with tannins fine and coming quite late. This is surprisingly not bad now. Juicy and sweet with great interest on the back end to liven it up.

Sampled from an Enomatic machine. Softer and more supple than you would expect from a CdP, but that's not to say this is weak. Blueberry, kirsch, and some spices and herbs on the nose. Surprisingly pleasant to drink now, thanks to the smooth tannins and the fruit-forward profile, although several years of age would no doubt bring some more complexity to this wine.

This vintage is saving the face of Beaucastel CDPs on my list. Contrasting from other vintages I've had like the '98, '04, and '06 this '11 has a reticent nose of red fruits and spices that shows promise given its density. Palate is a lot of fun with multiple layers of red fruits, spices, garrigue, licorice, and kirsh. Finishes medium to short with ample round tannins. If the bouquet ever opens up this could be a 94+ wine. Excellent job!

Dark violet color. Somewhat restrained nose offering aromas of violets and rose petals. Rich and opulent on the palate with silky tannins and flavors of black cherry, pomegranate, bitter almond, spice cake and minerals. Rather forward for Beaucastel, but promises to develop and reveal more with age.

Lots of bright red fruits and freshness with a base of herbs and stone. Not the brett bomb that I'd been led to expect, nor did it have the heaviness that I usually see in most CdPs, and which turns me off from the region. This is indeed concentrated, but it's the hidden kind, rather than big, extracted fruit.

Visit to Beaucastel (Chateau de Beaucastel): This had apparently just been bottled. Young and a touch tight. Nose of dark baked cherries, plums, baking spices. Pleasant peppery finish without quite enough length. 91+?

Day 2
Tertiary notes on the nose - spicy wood and mushrooms, smooth with Kirsch notes on the palate.

Tannins restrained but the higher than typical acidity was a surprise and which severely muted blackberry and plum notes. Medium long plum finish provided only brief enjoyment. A simple and disappointing Beaucastel that doesn't seem to have the backbone to improve further.

Paired with lasagne which worked a treat and drunk alongside a 2001 Domain du Pegaü Réservée (which I preferred) which provided an interesting contrast.

It will likely develop complexities over the next two to four years and it should last through 2025. 93-94.

Not the brett bomb that I'd been led to expect, nor did it have the heaviness that I usually see in most CdPs, and which turns me off from the region. This is indeed concentrated, but it's the hidden kind, rather than big, extracted fruit.

Concentrated, blackberry, blueberry and spice on the nose. Firm, youthful palate with hot alcohol; good spice flavours to finish.
3/5

Visit to Beaucastel (Chateau de Beaucastel): This had apparently just been bottled. Young and a touch tight. Nose of dark baked cherries, plums, baking spices. Pleasant peppery finish without quite enough length. 91+?
