This bottle showed significant bret/funk. Herbal and sharp, rough and rustic. A stark contrast to the bottle I had 3 years ago, with nobody identifying this as Duero or even Spain. Not a great bottle.

10/21 - had it at Halloween with kev/Mike/Tim. Simply an amazing wine. Great depth and balance. Nose of an aged northern cote rotie with smoke/graphite the kind of stuff I love. Beatufifully integrated with high ie fruits tobacco. Not sure it will get better but might.

[Tasted Blind] This pours medium garnet, medium bricking. The nose is expressive and complex showing notable new barrel. Aromas of charcoal, coffee grounds, dark cherry, strawberry, tobacco, and sawdust powerfully waft. The palate enters on bright and sweet fruit but quite unfortunately turns very tannic and astringent on the finish. Quite a lot of wood tannin here. I guessed a modern leaning bordeaux from a cooler vintage, at about 20 years of age. All in all this is showing quite nicely. The nose is aromatic, mature and complex. A 91 point nose, but sadly I found the astringent palate to really hold this back in the mouth. Pleasant with food, challenging without it.

19 yo...! ANd still lively, fresh, vigorous and extremely drinkable. An impressive performance for this entry-level, widely available label. From a top-notch vintage.

Tremendous amount of character stuffed into one bottle. Everyone said "Spain" upon first sip, and this is almost a definitive wine. At its height of maturity now, with so much stuffing, juiciness, spicy, meaty, cedar, earth. Terrific wine that has aged marvelously and greatly exceeded its humble price tag.

PnP. Brown tinged light to medium purple. Smells from grandma's closet; some dark fruit and spice; notes of cocoa, leather. Nose is beautiful. Palate is medium to full. It's a big wine. Medium high acid. Lip smacking. Tannins pretty smooth. Some nice fruit still on this at first, blueberry, black plum, blackberry. That fades very quickly after the first glass. Iron notes too. Nose mix of primary/secondary; palate more secondary/tertiary and I didn't enjoy it after the first half glass. Based on this bottle I'd drink any remaining up.

A bottle last August appeared to be fading, but this one was in prime shape. Earthy black currant fruit with sage and bacon--American oak barely noticeable. Plenty of color and substance--good bottles should cellar well to 2025. My last bottle, wish there were more.

Ruby with orange rim. Tobacco, bacon, flowers, blackberry and black currants, black cherry, cedar, spice box and some hints of forest floor and wet paper. This is still on a beautiful track with further aging potential for more than ten years in a cool cellar developing more tertiary notes with still present round tannins and good acidity providing great poise and freshness. If this is over the hill from your cellar it wasn't well stored anytime in the past. -2030

Very very good. Nose could be mistaken for Bordeaux, red fruit, green peppers. In mouth very smooth, nice acidity, some fruity cherry notes. Medium long finish. It is amazing how this wine is doing after 16 years. And this is crianza with 13.5% of alcohol. Bought at 30 Euro, it is extremely good deal.

I really enjoy this wine. My wife not so much. Decanted only an hour. Nose very pleasant old world and musty. Integrated but tame plum and deep red fruit. Decent finish. Changes significantly with time. Not a wine for Oz/Big Cali fans.

Very good wine, but nothing exceptional. I drank a bottle of this 3 years ago that was spectacular (97 pts) and I keep trying to replicate that experience but to no avail.
Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 90 minutes.
Garnet color in the glass, fairly clear looking. Nose of flowers, berries and a hint of thistle. Flavors of red berries and red raspberries. Medium to tart acidity, medium tannin, full bodied. Drink now.
NOTE: cork would not release from this bottle. Apparently wine seeped and sealed it. Finally had to push it into the bottle and decant through a screen.

Drank over a few hours. Nose doesn't correlate with palate. Initially had some very old world plum subtle barnyard and was a bit immature. Over time became more integrated and smooth but lost some of the subtleties. Not sure if I enjoyed it more early or late. The RDDs are a welcome change.

ruby with a brickred rim, complex nose of bacon, smoke, tobacco, meat, flowers, black currants and cherries, minerals and spices. It shows outstanding concentration and depth, but without heaviness. This is a joy to drink today but will evolve for at least ten years in a cool cellar like vintages as 1994 or 1989.

Very interesting wine. A bit of an adolescent Bordeaux. Deep purple hues. Old world nose. Some brash black blue and red fruit that may be a little too much but works. Don't notice the alcohol. Tongue staining with a long finish.

Decanted ~1 1/2 hours, consumed over two separate evenings. Some plum/fig fruit, surely once dense and ripe but now showing more savory to me, with notes of sun-dried tomatoes and roast beef and just a slight signature of oak remaining. Good acidity and very smooth tannins. Held up well over a couple of evenings (bottle corked, on the counter). A very satisfying bottle alongside some grilled top sirloins.

I drank several bottles from this case years ago and thought it was over the hill, only to discover it was going through a dumb period. Now that I finished my last bottle, I can rave about how it came around. Sweet dark red and plum fruit with earthy flavors and a bit of funk to keep it interesting.

Surprised at earlier comments. Shockingly good. Popped and poured. Improved over 30 minutes. Very nice old world nose. Pleasant ripe but muted fruit. Very nuanced. Incredibly long after taste. Enjoyed by myself and my wife who is a little bit of a new world fan. Very happy to have a few more.

Well cellared bottle, but this wine seems to be past its prime. Notes of rust, reminiscent of an aged syrah. Advanced red fruits, olives, earthy flavors; lacks uplifting aromatics. Drink up.

A beautiful bottle that was in its perfect drinking window. Color was a deep blackish red - still holding in the core. Cherry reduction, earth, wood smoke, leather, and cigar smoke on the nose. Took 2 hours to really open up but very explosive in the mouth when paired with red meat. Balanced and powerful with a finish that lasts and lasts. One of the best wines I've had in a long time. Memorable. 95.

I'm with BLANQUITO on this one. +1 for longevity. Additionally, I caught a little savory olive note. Fantastic. Drink 'em if you got 'em, but my how she has lasted! Calls for food. Wish restaurants had the patience to invest deeply in wines like this instead of a trick turner like Prisoner.

Highly aromatic and full flavored with heaps of sour cherry (tart), rosemary (green), iodine (medicinal), dust (earth) and a little smoke. Expressive and friendly, yet not sweet nor fruity. The palate is soft with notable brightness and good glycerin. This is a delicious, uncomplicated, real wine; fully ready, distinctive, authentic and a great value. 90-91 pts.

Enjoyed the wine but the fruit is fading and dried. Black cherries, plum, vanilla flavors with no tannin left. Dried herbal and barnyard aromas with a dash of licorice.

decanted one hour; dark red w/lightening at rim; barnyard, a little poopy at decant, wild herbs, roasted notes, red earth; plums & mulberries, sour cherries, anise, herbs & underbrush, a touch gritty on the finish. tannins integrated but seem as if they'll always play a role. in the spot for this wine.
After wasting too many immature bottles, this wine has finally arrived. PnP'd, drinks well and in fact shows some earthy shortcomings on the finish that might suggest its time to drink up. But for now, bretty nose dissipates with time and reveals a complex, plummy wine with beef boullion, black licorice, pumpkin pie spice and garrique. Very good plus.

Lovely color, warms with a nice brick red rim. Nose is warm, rounded, softly herbal with nice plum and dark cherry fruit. Soft and well rounded on the palate, juicy with dry soft tannins, lovely tar, garrigue, licourice, meat notes - complex and tasty. This was drinking very well. Recommendation - drink up.

I've had this repeatedly since 2006, and it still shows almost the same - delicious. Minerally, some iodine, a dusty quality, but all showcased with great tempranillo fruit. Aromatic and pleasing. I'm going to drink my remaining stash sooner than later. B/B+

Probably on the decline, although I'm not so sure how far because this one is still ready to impress. Not so sure where others are getting sub-90 ratings from, but this one after one hour in a decanter was asking for directions to the 1AM party. The cork crumbled into a million pieces which was the primary reason for decanting. The nose on this wine shows its age. Has a lot of plum, cob web, earth, and a very dense, aged blackberry. The palate is a very soft wine that has aged well, with a lot of dense, full throttled blackberry, mocha, terroir, and black pepper spice right up front. The wine settled in the mid-palate to a lot of earth, and finished with a supple tannin and aged fruit with a rather spicy finish that ramped up after an hour of decanting. Still rather fruity and full bodied even on the finish. Very impressive, and possibly even a bit heady on the finish. I still think this easily has another 5 years ahead of it, maybe 10 if cellared perfectly. Drink now with 30-60 minutes of decanting. Done in 2017.

My oh my, how this wine was evolved. I specifically recall being disappointed with this on release, as the wine was disjoint, clumsy, funky, hard, and charmless. Perhaps that was a particularly bad bottle, but this one was particularly good, the bipolar opposite of the charmless one. Suave, smooth, almost mature, and just plain delicious was this bottle, with juicy fruit and lively acidity. The depth is actually quite impressive, and my score reflects the amount of pure enjoyment we found in this.

Decanted. Aromas of red cherries, tobacco, anise, earth and a little Brett. Medium bodied and elegant in the mouth with fairly good acidity and mostly resolved tannins. Good length. Mature now, but should be able to hold on for a couple of years.

Quel beau vin! 91 pts

The second of six bottles kept in our passive cellar since release. Decanted through a Vinturi for 30 minutes and served. Good clarity and color with maturing aromas of cherry and other dried dark fruits, leather, and barnyard. I like some barnyard in a maturing red wine, but this was a little overdone in that department. The funk did however moderate by the second glass. Very solid feel in the mouth with a moderate amount of complexity but lacking the focus that the color hinted at. Medium length with the fruit component trailing off before the tannin leaving an uneven impression. I don't see this improving from here so I will move the remaining bottles over to the daily drinker section. Overall, a pleasant drink but not a totally satisfying experience as it lacked the depth, style, and richness of flavor I was hoping for. 88 points
Wednesday, August 30, 2012, UPDATE It has been almost a year since the last bottle and time to give this another try. This was decanted for 45 minutes leaving a fair amount of very fine sediment. I had high hopes for this bottle remembering how enjoyable their offerings from the early and mid 1980's were. I didn't find the funk to be as prominent as my notes from last year indicated, but neither did I find it in any way distinguishing. At its best moments, a slight improvement over the last bottle. 89 points
UPDATE: 05/28/2014 Our last bottle, this was decanted for 30 minutes leaving a substantial deposit of sediment. I often wonder why it is that the last bottle shows better than any of the previous bottles; such was the case this time. As this was being decanted, a flurry of enticing mature aromas jumped out at me. On first pour, it was quite evident that this bottle was something quite different from all the earlier ones. On the nose and in the mouth, there was a wonderful play of mature components that reminded me of a well made older St. Julien. There was a touch of funk, but that added to the sweet spicy thread running through rather than being a distraction. The smooth tannins were largely resolved and there was a lengthy satisfying finish. The depth of flavor and vitality were surprising given my experience of the earlier bottles. This is the wonderful Pesquera I remember from the 1980’s. Maybe I started drinking these too soon. 92 points this time.

Luxury North Médoc scent of cool cedar, tobacco, spice - think Cos in a soft year - followed by a moreish, sexy (cherry) fruit-driven palate. Excellent ripeness, fine acidity, lovely purring tannic finish. What a great wine this is, and a bargain at €13,50 whenever it was I bought it. Had I only ignored the sniffy critics, I'd have bought a case back then, as it is, this is my last bottle. Immense self-pity... 91P

Great showing for this wine; classic matur(ing) profile of barnyard, dusty red fruit, anise, cigar box and earthy minerals; tannins are resolved, oak is integrated and acidity resonates. Great balance of fruit and secondary/tertiary flavor notes. Went very well with hearty Portuguese duck rice and hunter's stew. This is in a great place right now.

My fourth bottle of this wine, and it continues to impress. A very distinctive, engaging combination of aromatics and flavors: iodine, saline, beef broth, sour cherry, sweet vanilla, all wrapped up in a suave, silky package that's both lush and fresh at once. Really good. Still a bit foursquare at present, but highly enjoyable now. Or wait 5 years for more nuance to emerge.

Disappointing bottle, slightly faulty. All the positive qualities described in previous notes dimished by a scent redolent of rotten eggs, and a musty, rotten cardboard edge to the palate. Despite this, there is so much intrinsic quality here that the wine is still drinkable. In this condition 86P(-) The solution is simple: screw caps instead of faulty corks, please!

Imagine Lynch Bages from a ripe year, but made of Tempranillo, and you come very close to this wine. Super cedar and forest floor aromas, just the slightest hint of barnyard. Ripe sour cherry fruit balanced by gorgeously tight tannins just starting to loosen, still making the tongue furry, but in the nicest imaginable way. Medium-long finish, say 35 seconds, with excellent resonance making you want to take another sip. Good on opening at 14C, stays good the whole evening at room temperature. A bargain at 14,50 Euros retail. 92P

90 pts

Nice nose upon opening. Dense, dark fruit. A lot of oak in first glass, softened by the second glass. Big wine. Nothing youthful about it. Nice finish. Dark plum and showing some brick on the rim. Nose is rustic with lots of earth, leather, anise over blacbkerry and cherry fruit. Full bodied, with ripe and juicy fruit, almost crunchy with the acidity, black plum and red currant - definite red fruit edge with defined acidty. Lacks some mid-palate ripeness but a really ncie food wine and one with a long tasty finish.
Although this was drinking pretty well I will keep my other bottle for another couple of years to see what happens.

Dark color, starting to brick at rim. Aromatically of moderate intensity showing a good mix of youth and tertiary notes... good core of dark fruits, some barrique spice, some earthy notes, definitely some Brett in here. On the palate good acidity, a moderate amount of flesh on the midpalate... nice transition into a moderate amount of very ripe and well integrated tannins. Finish is 30 sec but very subtle in nature. Good balance, length, intensity... average complexity. Good finesse, texturally a bit hollow on the midpalate for me, very expressive of place and producer. At its peak IMO... for the price this wine is quite impressive... very good wine.

2nd time I have had this wine. This vintage is better than the 1996, 1998 or 1999. Drinking very well right now. Paired with with spare ribs and a homemade barbeque sauce. The oak and fruit have maried very well and this is a very fine integrated, complex and elegant wine. 92 points.

90 pts

Very nice wine!! The nose was cherry, currant and saddle leather which carried over nicely to the palate where these elements where joined by some funk, in a good way, anise and spice. The finish lasted a full minute with cherry/currant fruit, a touch of leather and good lifting acidity. A fantastic QPR but sadly my only bottle. Damn...I hate when this happens.

A nice example of New World meets Old World. The New World traits are the big, ripe dark fruit and toasty oak notes, while the Old World traits are the ample acidity, smoke, leather and earthy notes. Bigger in size than many RdD's at medium to full body. I like where this is at right now as the tannins and acidity are in good balance, while the fruit is still fresh and ripe. Outstanding QPR for the $17 I paid.

91 pts

First of my 6. Very nice and starting to show the graceful side of age. Rich color and not much on the nose. Perhaps it could use a bit more purity on the palate, but very nice wine and a pleasure to drink. Excellent with the vodka sauce pasta and I expect should pair well with steak tonight.

Rather big typical nose of plums, dark berries, a hint of vanilla, raw meat, blood, some "funk" if you will. On the palate medium-bodied, dark berries more prominent, medium concentration, some acidity. No lack of tannins. The nose is better than the palate though. Was nice with some elk. Reading other TN's this one seems to have evolved a bit over the past 2 years, hope it will continue to improve. For the moment 89-90 points.

A big nose of red currant and toasty oak. Surprisingly light on the palate given the fairly substantial nose. Medium-bodied and elegant with clean, bright red fruits and lively acidity. A soft and supple if somewhat muted finish. Enjoyable now, but in a rather plain phase. I expect this wine will improve and develop additional complexity with further cellaring. (note: this bottle is not showing the barnyard notes so often referenced...)

Served to me blind; Dark garnet red in color; The first whiff was a load of barnyard which narrowed me down to Europe. There was so much barnyard that I did not consider that this would be anything other than a Rhone wine. This bottle was so much better than one we had a year or so ago. It was medium-bodied and balanced with currant aromas and flavors along with that wicked "horsey". Very good wine and probably still improving. Maybe another bottle in 2007. There is great value in this wine. [~$16 on release; Decanted maybe 1-2 hours in advance of serving]

Second bottle. Rated the first more highly, but notes consistant with the notes on this board. Bit of a funk when first opened - barnyard. However, after that blew off was left with a well balanced, layered wine. smoke, leather and dark fruit. Not a super finish, but very strong wine for the $.

A wonderful wine - smoky earthiness and great, sweet fruits. Toasted oak on the nose and body that is like a good cigar. Dry tannins on the finish shows the wine still needs more time. Leave the remaining bottles for at least another year.

I can't see what could be considered wrong with this wine, except that I don't have enough and that it should be perfect for drinking in 2007/2008. Very fat, great nose, oak and balanced fruit - too many flavours to count. Medium finish. Lengthen the finish and better mouthfeel would have yielded a 98.

Very dark purple in color. Note giving much on the nose initially; later blackberry, herbal, a little medicinal. Strongly extracted, very fruity, blackberry and cassis, licorice, oaky at first, but receded as it opened up and the fruit became more prominent; little hints of herbs and even a little hint of green. A touch alcoholic/medicinal, with a hint of nail polish. Powerful, tasty, but a little all over the place.

On Day 1 this was tight and closed for business (85pts), but we set it aside to see how air would help. It was a tremendous help. Day 2 proved much more enjoyable. Still had acid to spare, but the fruit and chocolate notes were much more apparent. Wish we had some left for a Day 3 tasting. Actually, I WISH I would've read the notes here first -- i wouldn't have opened this now at all.

Opened for wife and my valentine's day celbration (a day early to to conflicts on the actual day). Really nice, albeit tightly woven. As previous posts indicate, this could use about 5 years to really develop. Right now, with about 4 hrs in the decanter, shows big black fruit, nice concentration, big tannins, and I got some foxiness, although my wife could not pick it up. Very nice wine, although I should have waited a bit more time.

From Squires: 2001 Pesquera Tinto On the first day (not decanted), the nose is a little bit closed. On the palate rich notes of black fruits and spicy cedar. The wine lacks of harmony and has a meaty structure. On the second day, the tannins are well integrated. Light notes of chocolate, concentrated notes of woodstrawberry and black fruits. The wine shows an incredible length and complexity. Great future! Buy it!! (90+ pts) Wait until 2007-8.

Opened with great anticipation, given the raves from professionals and top-ranked amateurs, and my love of Tempranillo. I waited a grand total of 1 day after arrival from the west coast (from the Wine Exchange). The bottles were cool upon arrival, though a few had corks protruding a tad. Several also had lowish fills... The wine: a deep black purple, very primary colors. A subtle nose of southern Rhone (garrigue?) and faint oak. On the sip, the wine is smooth textured, with layers of subdued black cherry fruit, followed up with lots of bright acidity and a long finish of tart, drying tannins. Still gestating, it would be unfair to judge this wine too harshly before it has learned to crawl. Nevertheless, I expected more fruit from a 2001 Spaniard. The wine has good concentration and raw materials, but it is only moderately fun to drink now given its tart profile. On day 2, a tad sweeter, still muted, still too tart. Reminded me of an Italian wine. Not one to open with neophytes until it comes into better balance. Bad bottle? Too young? I am sure it will get better in a few years, adding complexity, but I wonder if it will reach the heights so prophesized.

(from memory) A beautiful wine, clean, soft, bright ruby red, amazingly balanced with plum, cassis, hints of mocha and wonderfully fruit infused long finish, a treat to consume

Dark ruby red. Tasted after a 2001 Pichon Baron, so initially it suffered by comparison. Surprisingly fruity (even a "fruit bomb"), relatively simple, although it did improve with time, either due to the evolution of our palates--it seemed to pick up a bit more structure. Still, not particularly impressive.

This wine is much more concentrated than those previous efforts. Inky red/purple. Dark fruit notes of black cherry, cassis, currant and spices. Some pepper and chocolate notes were also present. Prominent oak and tannins at the present time so I would give this time. It just arrived at the store I bought it from so it may have been suffering form travel shock. A month might allow it to settle in the short term; but, a few years of aging would be better. Chewy texture. A little awkward now but great potential so I will score it how I think it will end up. 91-92+ points.

Finally had to push it into the bottle and decant through a screen.

ruby with a brickred rim, complex nose of bacon, smoke, tobacco, meat, flowers, black currants and cherries, minerals and spices. It shows outstanding concentration and depth, but without heaviness. This is a joy to drink today but will evolve for at least ten years in a cool cellar like vintages as 1994 or 1989.

88 points
Wednesday, August 30, 2012, UPDATE
It has been almost a year since the last bottle and time to give this another try. 89 points
UPDATE: 05/28/2014
Our last bottle, this was decanted for 30 minutes leaving a substantial deposit of sediment.

90 pts

This is good - a little rustic, but very tasty.

Bigger in size than many RdD's at medium to full body. I like where this is at right now as the tannins and acidity are in good balance, while the fruit is still fresh and ripe.
