To Tony (La Grange Park, IL): I didn't love this, but these days, Chetillons just doesn't really do it for me. It's fine, solid blanc de blancs, with a good mineral core and plenty of chardonnay-driven acidity (even in 2006!), but overall lacking weight and the level of complexity and palate presence you expect from a wine that costs, well, what it costs these days.

Very good. Somewhat advanced for an ‘06. Mid golden colored. Hazelnut, apricot, peach, mandarin. Luscious and creamy. I loved it, although it’s not my favorite vintage of their Chetillons.

Rich lemon cake palate. 10,000 layers of flakey crust. Orange rind, lots of mineral. Outstanding. That’s the theme of the day. Butter laden pie crust.
Day 2 and the last flat ounce still showing great. A little more mineral and herb. Savory pizza crust. Rocky’s breadsticks. Tarragon, but more marjoram and pear. Light level of extract. Butter and marmite, herbes poulet.
Don’t drink til 2030 really.

Great in every way. Mocca coffee, moderate acidity with subtle intensity and lots of yellow fruit. Balance. Enough fizz and bobbles. Charming but light aging notes. In a great place now.
Sparkling effervescence on pouring changing to an intense column. Apricot and lemon on the nose; beautiful depth and intensity of aromatics. Lively with full mouth feel and length. Couldn’t ask for more in a Champagne for a special occasion. No down side in sight.

Someone else happened to bring the basic Peters BdB cuvee and it was interesting to drink them together. This wine was rather constricted and inward, not very expressive at all last night. I've had it before and it was much more open and articulate on those occasions. The intensity is there, the density of the material, but its as though we were granted a window to see the wine, but couldn't really experience it. The basic cuvee, on the other hand, and not surprisingly, was generous and delicious, and entirely ready for drinking.

Light golden yellow in the glass this leads initially with scents of fresh bread, kiwi, oyster shell, and a kick of lemon zest. The palate lean with notes of green & yellow apple, chalk, lemon, lime, quince, and a lingering finish that is both complete and complex. Outstanding!!!

Blind Champagne Tasting (The Winery Restaurant in Newport Beach, CA (The OC)): Poured blind as part of a mini-vertical of Chetillons. We neither knew the vintages nor the producer. Aromas of white flower and bread dough. When I tasted this, I noticed some red berry quality to it so I had guessed maybe a blend of PN and Chard but as with blind tasting, I was wrong there. Citrus zest, light mineral, saline and a bitter almond kind of thing. I appreciated this for the balance and the way it showed. Very good.

Still very youthful and interestingly enough less developed than the magnum I tasted a week ago. Rich & velvety on the palate with roasted coffe notes that in some pairings turned to liquorice. Oh, yeah... Nose is tempting, but the palate really delivers, here: creamy with 25% green apple on the palate. Palate is persistent. A real crowd pleaser. More green apple/sweetness than something like NV Veuve and more body/green apple than something like NV Krug. Anyone that opened a bottle of this would think that it was an unusually fine champagne. Certainly serious enough to stand up through multiple first courses should it be asked to do so.

Really lovely. Shows freshness and richness on the nose, at first mostly creamy fruit but an hour plus later the nose also shows bass notes of salty chalk. There is something like white chocolate too, which sounds kind of unpleasant but it comes off well. The palate to me pulls off the neat trick of tasting quite different from what the nose would suggest. I found it to be rich but in an entirely controlled and linear way, showing more density and intensity of fruit and mineral than complexity at this stage. There is clearly a lot of material here though and although entirely delicious, it feels like this wine is still growing.

A Birthday for Dave (Spoon & Stable, Mpls, MN): Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 45 minutes. The nose has citrus and yellow fruits, chalk and yeast. The palate is dominated by chalky minerality and citrus, sour lemon, citrus pith and an oxidative style. Pretty bold and not really stylistically attractive to me with an over abundance of chalk and bite on the finish.

Golden color, fairly rich and fruity but with a seam of minerality and good acidity that keeps it in check. After a few minutes in the glass, a little RS is apparent, which is a little surprising probably because I've grown so accustomed to zero to ultra-low dosage Champagnes, but which doesn't bother me in the least. Delicious.

Quite sharp, intense effervescence, young. Big lemony citrus and green apple. Seems like a lot of sugar / sweetness indicative of some '06s, but maybe just an interpretation of young age. Did not spend a lot of time with the wone as it went around pretty quickly apres ski, but obviously a good champagne and would buy again.

Dinner at Formento's (Chicago, IL): A pretty restrained nose that also comes across as quite round. The palate here is also quite fat, though with some air (and reducing the temperature) I got a little bit more acidity. I liked the characteristics of this wine, with a bit of Rainier ccherry, but the acidity just doesn't quite cut it for me here (no pun intended), and there's a slight white grape flavour on the finish that is a bit puzzling.

(Degorged 2 years ago) Yellow colour with a stream of fine and tiny bubbles. Still very youthful on the nose showing some hazelnuts, marzipan and minerals in the beginning. Fantastic. I don't get any oxidized notes, nor dough notes, which recent TNs have included. I get a very finessed, very direct, very clean palate of pure clear and white fruits, light citrus, very Blanc de Blanc. This shows very impressive precision. Beautiful Champagne. Fairway Cafe with the guys.

The nose is clean, medium intensity, quite different from the rest, rather sweeter and more feminine, floral with ripe fruit, apple, apricot, melon and almond, developing. The wine is dry (5,21g/lt residual sugar), medium body and intensity, medium alcohol (12,1%), med+/high acidity, oxidative notes, apple and citrus, nice CO2, lime juice, medium finish, lacks a bit in the fruit department in the palate. Very good quality, premium price, drink now

Rather yeasty and doughy at first, but this really opened up with some air in a large Burg glass to reveal layers of bright floral, vanilla, doughy, and chalky mineral flavours around a core of fresh citrus and pear flavours. There's a faint sense of sweetness on the palate that's nicely supported by the bright acid spine here, and impressive length on the finish. Really liked this, especially with air. Thanks Brian.

Doughey/ yeasty nose with a very pretty floral component, white flowers, and yellow fruit. Aromas carry through to the palate where the wine is vibrant, showing a nice mineral backbone that doesn’t stick out, but rather frames and supports the fruit nicely. This makes for a very graceful and weightless experience. With air the finish took on a crushed almond note. There is still a trace of sweetness that runs through the mid palate and finish. This should be rewarded by further aging. Excellent

Champagne Dinner (L'Apicio): Completely different in style from any of the others. Sweet lemon, white flowers, some vanilla, a fair amount of mint, extremely chalky. Airy with tons of mineral crackle, easily the most mineral wine tonight, and while it's not super dense or powerful it's extremely persistent. I very much like this style of BdB and I think I may have preferred this more than others did.

Champagne dinner (L'Apicio, NYC.): Yeasty, bready, lemon, orange peel - spicy and very bright. Palate showing bread, ginger. Cut and focused. Soft mousse - first sip had assertive entry and then died off. Not sure what was happening Another pour later seemed to have less of this. Still a little short on the end-palate and finish. Palate showed bread, citrus, minerals and pear. Nose - 5-5.5/6, Palate - 4.5/6, Finish - 4/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 14.5-15/20.

A 1964 birthday Celebration (Sepia - Chicago IL): Just a baby, this shows very concentrated orchard fruit aromas and flavors with an emerging bready, yeasty character. Intense Chardonnay richness with some background hints of sassafras and candied ginger. Saltiness was the defining characteristic on the nose, with crispy Japanese seaweed and salted peanuts. I expected a reductive style from Peters, but here the palate and nose evolved into Madeira-like notes of dried apricots and mangoes. Overall, the wine was not unpleasant to taste, but I would be concerned as to how it evolves.

Drank next to the 04 Tait Comtes bubbly, which was electric. This Chetillons was right there with it. A distinctive bread dough note, with some austerity in the palate. Nutty, toasty, great depth and broad. Loved the acidity. Fair to say I liked this a helluva lot.

Super-elegant, flowery, limestone/mineral, & creamy lees. Lightly pungent, VERY perfumed. Some sort of very delicate white-citrus fruit, but a delicate floweriness takes precedence on both nose & palate. Etherial chalk, ginger, lavender, & lime-flesh. Impeccable class, acidity, subtlety, & complexity. Decent length, depth, & persistence. A quiet strength allied to an absolutely amazing, perfect balance. Only flaw is medium only intensity. Those weighing complexity & delicacy above all will probably like & rate it higher than I did. Big Cheers! . . . but was I ever so slightly expecting more . . . ? More intensity would easily raise this to Great.

Great depth of tastefully rendered clean fruit and wonderfully balanced supporting acidity. On the nose this is clean, creamy, smoky, with salt water taffy, and superb minerality as it opens. Very, very good Champagne this is, from a really likable producer. Young. Fudge, bread, yeast, airy white flowers. Very good Bl. d Bl. characteristics. France 2013 - Champagne; 4/14/2013-4/15/2013 (Reims): Tasted at Pierre Peters. Expressive nose with orchard fruit, floral and citrus with hints of saline and leesy notes as well; most complex nose yet. Generous and ripe, but balanced, with a rounded and fresh mouthfeel. Very good acidity, but not as much as the previous 2008 L'Esprit. Hints of bitter almonds on the palate which Rodolphe says will turn into hazelnuts with proper aging. He also says he doesn’t believe this 2006 will age as long as the 2008 Chetillons. This 2006 drinks well now and should continue to do so for 7-10 years. This is a blend of 3 parcels, vinified separately, and each year the best blend is chosen. Should gain a few points over the next 5 years or so. Excellent. 90+

On the palate: Coffee, vanilla with a nice acidity that makes the wine very well balanced.

Yellow colour with a stream of fine and tiny bubbles. Still very youthful on the nose showing some hazelnuts, marzipan and minerals in the beginning. Opens up after a while in the glass showing oak and butterscotch. Nice ample and intensive palate showing mature apples and with a very nice and long finish.

Monday Night at Ripple (Ripple - Cleveland Park - Washington, DC): Bright orange peels and biscuits on the nose. Creamy but tart, brisk with solid intensity, tart green apple, green pears, some sea salt and biscuit notes add complexity. Gorgeous minerals and some gingery spice as well. Deep, long, lingering, ageworthy.

Grower Champagne Tasting, Individual Expressions of Champagne (IMW) (Trinity House, London): This is 100% Chardonnay, dosage 4-5g/lt, 100% malolactic fermentation, no oak maturation, 7 years bottle ageing.

I really like Champagne like this on the younger side, before the powerful and fresh fruit is lost behind its other charms.

The palate shows very classy and understated brioche and the slightest hints of toffee already. Seahells galore. Like a GC Chablis on the palate. Brilliant. 92+pts, with lots of upside. Light yellow colour with extremely nice fine bubbles.
The nose is tight in the beginning but after a while in the glass it opens up with tones of sulphur, flint and then comes hazelnuts and chocolate.
The palate is youthful and austere with orange peel mixed with unripe red apples. The finish is not yet integrated and brings down the rating by a couple of Points.

Excellent. 90+
