10/12, vg cork. Pale/medium garnet core, wide pale garnet rim. Quietly aromatic with pure red fruit, savoury game notes, spice, touch of caramel. Medium bodied, lovely pure strawberry fruit on initial entry, quite gamey too, elegant but by no means lean - middleweight in fact - very fine tannins, fresh/vibrant acidity carries a good length finish showing a combination of pure fruit and savoury notes. This is excellent, the best bottle so far, no particular hurry.

Best showing of this yet, and typically my last bottle. A similar savoury edge to the Cherbaudes alongside, but a density of richer and redder fruit to cover the savouriness and provide a real sense of richness and luxe. A clear step up. Currently in a good spot and worked well with veal sweetbreads and morels stuffed with shallot and foie gras. ****

Pulled from cellar to celebrate birth of first grandchild! I don’t usually decant burgundy but previous notes suggested some Fourrier fizz so I did. Small glass just after decanting and it was singing . Nose spectacular, game and warm leaves and earth. Palate rich and firm with depth and power. Continued to develop through the evening and delicious. None of the 2004 green notes. No doubt skewed by the emotions of the day but this was a cracking bottle.

Clos St Jacques Dinner (Gunther's, Purivs Street, Singapore): Another really delicious wine - this was much better than the last bottle I had. It had a beautiful nose, with touches of herb and spice, earth and meat, with a blush red cherries and berries, and touches of ferrous mineral. No 2004 green meanies here. The palate was lovely too, fresh and lovely, with juicy acidity and velvety tannins alongside lovely rounded flavours of dark cherries, red berries, earth, meat and gentle spiciness. There was a little hint of warm, boiled herbs at the end, but nary a sign of the extreme green the wine showed in its youth. This was delicious, and drinking so nicely now.

8/12, good cork - 20% soaked. Medium/deep ruby/garnet core, pale garnet rim. Nose is still quite youthful with notably dark-toned fruit, nice pure with smoke, earth and herbal notes. Medium bodied on the palate, tannins are fully resolved, this has dark, smoky fruit, touch of earth and meat, again a herbal note which becomes a touch more prevalent as the wine warms a bit but still doesn't overly detract, vibrant acids, good if not exceptional length finish. All in all excellent and I would say fully mature.

5 years since we tried this last ( Papies 92+) and this has easily developed nicely and effortlessly. Some decantign woudl be advisable as it has a bit of fizz feel on the palate that went away after some time. The nose of this wine wine is majestic and easily the highlight of the wine, light spice, red fruit, smoky dark side. Amazing nose singing fromt he pop of the cork. The palate fails the wine, firstly with that fizz but also never develops to the level of the nose. Excellent wine but i think aside from the nose it would struggle to match better vintages. Solid 93 and with lots of life in it. We have 1 more bottle that we would save for another 5 years :)

2004 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Holland Park): A decent enough wine, but rather lacking the usual quality of Fourrier's CSJ; this was also very much put in the shade by a lovely bottle of 2004 Rousseau Jacques that we had alongside. It had a really sweet, almost slightly candied nose, with strawberry gummies and raspberry ripple aromas along with a nicely floral perfume. Almost Chambolle-like, with no green in sight. It would have been very attractive if not for the slightly distracting over-sweetness. The palate was clearly no Chambolle though, in fact coming across a tad clumsy and inelegant when put next to the lovely Rousseau CSJ, with little powdery tannins leaving a rather rustic sense of structure behind almost burly flavours of black cherries underpinned by a firm, slightly hard spine of the terroir's wet stony mineral. I liked the clarity and freshness of this, and it had a good length, with a little kiss of spice trailing into a slightly bitter snap at the finish, but it did all feel a bit rustic next to the every-so-polished Rousseau. Decent enough, and it will probably improve over the next few years, but I am not confident this will ever be a great wine.

Initially, a bit stemmy/stalky with some black olive bitterness that I associate with 04s. Slightly muddy nose with hints of damp cardboard had me worried it might be corked. Whilst it remained a little muddy/unclean, fortunately the cardboard/tca aroma disappeared. It remained a bit tight on the back end. Wasn't surprised when this was revealed as the 04 CSJ.

Quite dark. Dense on the nose with a spicy, gamey, ripe dark-fruitedness with a touch of prune. Plush and dense on the palate with impressive weight and density. Initially a slightly licqorice edge that does develop in to an 04 character which doesn't blow off. Has the effect of giving it a slightly spiked edge, but also a savouriness that complements the rich fruit. Not a great CSJ but nor is it a disaster. Bare ****

Agree with other tasters -- no green on this (and I'm really sensitive to that scent/flavor). Very earthy -- barnyard the better term, actually. Also strongly tobacco-y. Both come through on the palate as well, along with mostly dark fruit. Good balance. A little short on the finish. Good stuff overall.

Medium garnet, pale garnet rim. Nose shows dark cherry fruit, distinct peppery herbal notes, smoke and earth. Quite rich but the 04 character is quite prevalent. On the palate medium bodied, smoky, dark cherry fruit, quite long and deep but at the same time showing some firm/sandy tannins on the finish, along with the herbal/peppery notes. Still a nice drink but distinctly more marked by the 04 character than previous bottles have been.

Medium garnet core, medium pale garnet rim. On the nose this has sweet, fragrant strawberry fruit, some nice spicy and earthy complexity, a slight green/peppery edge but not an issue. Medium bodied, generously fruited, with sweet, spicy strawberries, a gamey edge, good depth and length with a spicy, earthy finish. Excellent, drinking well but no hurry.

No sign of any of the much-discussed '04 flaws. A really pretty nose of bright red fruit with an herbal undercurrent. On the palate, it's smooth and elegant with a crisp mineral finish. Fantastic stuff that's drinking oh-so-well right now.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (and an embarrassment of riches) (Chicago, IL): Fourrier nailed it. A delicious, if slightly bordelais nose of brown spice, coffee, and soy. No hint of green to be found anywhere (and I was looking!).

Required a bit of decanting as their was a bit co2 on the palate. Another good showing albeit it did not excite us as much as last time (rated 94). Easily among the best 04 we have tried, especially from Gevrey. Nose is meaty, smoky with good fruit and very Gevrey. On the palate is pure and solid with good fruit and such a joy to drink and with none of the flaws of the vintage. 92+ drinks nicely now.

Terroir-istes International - France, Burgundy, Gevrey Chambertin (Rodwell House): Light to medium crimson with a brown rim. The tertiary bouquet intrigues with marmite, animal, oak spices, coffee and chocolate. Showing some lovely development and complexity, the entry has sweet fruit and richness balanced by fresh acidity, purity of flavour and elegance, yet with that athletic muscle and subtle power underneath. Excellent depth of flavour and complexity with gritty tannins, some plush textures as the wine opens and a long, undulating finish. A very elegant wine.

Burgundy WIMPS 2012 'Charles the Fat' table (The Ledbury, London): Showing better than the offline at The Ledbury about three years back. More mellow, mature, slightly pruney nose, even with a very slight hint of Christmas cake. Slightly spritzy too. Relaxes with air, first the CO2 dissipates, then the evolved figiness and it tightens up nicely. Nicely mellow and drinking well. Fresh. Lacks some purity of fruit though. This really settles down quite nicely by the time pudding is in place after a couple of hours. It loses its funk and slight volatility and shows far more level and restrained. ****

Crimson purple in the glass with some subtle bricking. Aromas of meat, blood, and ripe red and purple stone fruits. This is one of the best 2004s we have had (although many have been disappointing), with no sign of the unpleasant taint on the finish that characterises many wines of this vintage. There is ripe, sweetish fruit (raspberry and redcurrant), with good weight and depth. Nicely mature, but by no means elderly. Very enjoyable.

No formal note - but seemed slightly more youthful than last time out with deep, pure darker berry fruit, vanilla, a touch smokey with a slight peppery/herbal edge. Medium garnet core, medium pale garnet rim. Nose is relatively evolved with smoky red and black berry fruit, earth and spice notes. Lacking a little of the ripeness and purity in this vintage that this wine customarily displays, but still an attractive nose. There is perhaps just a hint of pepperiness but not enough to detract in any meaningful way. Medium/full bodied on the palate and again quite developed with smoky, spicy mainly red-toned fruit and notes of soil. The tannins are fine and well integrated and there is good acidity carrying an attractive lingering, spicy finish. Pleasant and well balanced without being outstanding, certainly drinking well now but no hurry either.

Even from the 04 vintage Fourrier managed to create something really special here. This is a wine worthy of the hype and adds to the consistent excellence we come across the avg vintages (03,07 etc). No decanting. Open and rushes out of the bottle big and deep on the nose. A bit of a brutish nose at this young stage. On the palate, and although young, it still shows its greatness and we would have never guessed this is an 04. This is a wine to buy for sure.

Fourrier Clos St Jacques at The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London): Anonymous next to the other vintages here tonight, and from memory not as enjoyable as the Cherbaudes and the Clos Solon - but still pleasant, fresh, salty and with tobacco notes' and not showing the meanness of other growers' 04s

Slightly brown colour, showing a fairly mature wine already. However, there is quite a lot of raspberryish fruit, which is still reasonably fresh. This is quite a good effort for the vintage, but not a great wine.

Given several hours to open this is very sappy with good weight. Dark red fruits, medicinal notes, a bit of iron and, unfortunately, mirepoix. Not enough to halt enjoyment, by any stretch, but enough to definitely notice. Could use a bit more focus, and who knows on the aging curve given the meanies showing up, this was just a singleton for me and provided more enjoyment than most 04's have, but I'm still glad to have few 04's left.

Medium hue which quickly fades to a watery rim. Some mashed sour cherries on the nose are overtaken by cooler spearmint, menthol aromatics. Medium weight, good fruit but some dill emerges and the tannins are distinctly underripe, all of which make the finish short. OK but below expectations for a Clos St. Jacques and for this producer.

Wow, a really crappy bottle of Fourrier, and Clos St. Jacques to boot. It wasn't that it was green, though it had some herbal qualities, it was loose, unfocused, and very un-Fourrier-like. Perhaps the blend of fairly ripe sugars and lower phenolics messes with the Fourrier house style. For whatever reason, this wine has little to recommend it. I have other bottles, so I'm hoping this was an aberrant showing.

Aroma of ripe blackberry, blackboy peach and mineral element. On the palate great focus, sinewy, very sappy/bracken, mid palate breadth of ripe dark fruits, great length and lingering finish.. Perhaps a little too much bracken on the entry. Interesting in comparison to the Esmonin CSJ - which was broader, had more oak, and was riper/fatter and I think more approachable right now.

We gave this bottle about 45mins in the decanter before dinner. While it could have used more time -- it kept getting better and better -- it was pretty darned good out of the gate. Medium-bodied but intense, with smokey black fruits, earth, spice, and considerable depth. The wood is noticeable at this stage but I found it very well done, and I'm generally oak-averse. It frames the wine nicely without getting in the way. It seems to have more material to me than the 2001 (though I only had that at a tasting) and a bright future ahead.

Full-bodied with the typical medicinal flavors of this vineyard. Slightly green finish. Not a special vintage but time will tell. Tasted at Mas, NYC 11/05/08

Surprise! Very nice indeed with none of the vintage's infamous greenness. The best of the Fourier CSJs by far tonight.

Burghound comes to London (One Great George Street): After the 2005 and 2006, this was shier on the nose and sharper, but smoky, ripe cherry fruit, and no sign of green [90]

Nicely perfumed nose of dried cherry, light smoke and baking spices. On the palate, intriguing dusty red fruit, layers of spice and earth. Quite impressive.

Fairly non-descript day one. amazingly, this actually put on color the next day. Fourrier wines are such amazing creatures. Not sure that this is a great vintage for this wine, but this is certainly a good wine.
