Aged nicely with tannins that are still kicking but with fruit that has nice notes of black cherries, tobacco and a fresh earthiness. I think it needs to be drunk now and would go well with a dish that requires freshness to cut through richness (think a rib eye).

Drank over 2 nights (still nice on night 2). Notes from night 1 after 3 hours slow ox. Light red color, nearly brown. On nose, tree bark, prunes, black cherry and tobacco. On palate, ripping tannins, medium+ acidity, medium body and long finish. Palate consistent with nose. Paired very well with a grilled NY Strip. On it's own, tannins were overpowering. Should have read all the tasting notes and waited! With that said, I worry the fruit would be gone when the tannins have calmed down. Still enjoyed this. 91+/-

Very balanced presentation at this point, deep flavor nuanced by receding astringency of the tannins. Agree with those who note need for time to open up, find it still revealing fruit after three hours. A great accompaniment to grilled hangar steak, everything I could ask for this level of Barolo after 12+ years of controlled storage. Glad I have another two bottles, will need to consume this year.

Stellar. Reached great heights after 6-7 hours open. Delicate and not overpowering, with rose & tea nose, strawberry, hardwood and a little cigar on the back palate. Tannins balanced but with grip.

This was very nice immediately: didn’t really require any decanting. Dark cherry and subtle wood and metallic notes made for an interesting and smooth wine with moderate tannins. Seems very food-versatile as I had with lighter fare than ideal

Decanted for 30 minutes. Color is purple-red fading to pink-red at the edge. Virtually no orange. A little bit closed. Swirling reveals some slight hints of age in the aroma. Aromas of cherry, violet, maybe menthol, a little forest floor. Flavors of cherry, tart acidity, tight grippy tannin. A bit linear cherry in the middle before the grippy finish. Tannin definitely softening after another 20 minutes. Drinking with dinner of sausage and chicken with kale and grape tomatoes over mezzepenne. Fairly quickly the bottle has softened and opened up nicely markedly improving. Notes of aging are still lurking at the edges. Very good. This bottle is very near its peak.

Alas, my final of 4 bottles, and I regret that this needs more time to be its best. OK now, but I suspect it will be a different and better animal in another 5 years. Or more. This is one of those wines that will be better when the tannins have been replaced by some funk.

Didn't give it hours of air, as others recommend, so calibrate accordingly. Pop, decant, and drank over two hours. I'd rate it an 88, but I'm fearful half of my score is flawed in prep, and half is flawed by my personal mojo today. So not formally entering a score.

Notes after an overnight of slow-ox which is, I believe, the best path to seeing this wine's potential. As the last taster noted, this is still tannic and a bit brutish at this age but after enough exposure, wow! The color is more garnet than ruby, about 60% saturated with a wide rim and no sediment. Beautiful bouquet of berries and floral perfume, enhanced by licorice, leather, cigar shop, and cinnamon. Medium bodied and could certainly be considered rustic (for now), but the flavor is beguiling enough to give this a big score. With these bold tannins on the palate, a little protein is recommended to give them something to do :) 5+13+17+8= 93

Appearance: Dark red. A bit dusty on nose. I agree with others that it’s a bit tight - tobacco and cherry with sour finish. Eucalyptus. Not sure why some say modern - after 11 years still needs time for tannins to resolve. Mushroom pizza had hard time standing up to this wine. Next time steak or lamb?

Really nice Barolo at a good QPR. We popped the day before and let breathe with new air under the cork. Was excellent the next day with veal saltimboca. Nice acidity. Was surprised to see it at 14.5%. A little hot but fruit is nice and bright. Not jammy. Secondary nuances of maturity are coming through too.

A solid new world-style Barolo. Started out with a delicate perfume that seems to be fading after a couple of hours. Silky smooth, just enough complexity to be interesting, and just the perfect touch of oak. Adds character without overwhelming the wine. Glad I have a couple more of these to enjoy over the next few years.

On nose : med+ intensity, red fruit : plum, cherry, black fruit : casis, blackberry, vanilla oak without overwhelming, lichorice, herbs, truffle, very deep and fruit dominated. A modern style Barolo for sure!
On palate : medium+ flavour intensity, high acidity, high and grainy tannin, subtle of sweet red and black fruit are on the front palate, black tea, coffee, mahogany and vanilla mocha on mid-palate and light bitterness full body with high alcohol aftertaste, long and pleasent finishing.
This is good match with steak, ibérico pork chop or lamb chop. Dispite of the grainy tannin and full body, it is not a big monster indeed. In some sense you we’re still impressed by the elegancy of the aging potential and it is very energetic . I recommend to hold for 3 more years or u may open if u can wait for it. No regrets!

Barolo Ginestra: I guess you have to rate wines how they are and not what you expect. This was the surprise of the evening, being from a lesser vintage and from a time where Clericos wines where generally inconsistent. My note started with Wow. The bouquet is quite powerful with powdered sugar and violets. The palate comes with young but fine tannins and good balance. The finish is very long. This was my only bottle, but i guess this makes sense to buy some extra ones.

Brick red in the glass. Already showing its weight on the first swirl, which I immediately don't like. I like my traditional, conservative, caveman style of Barolo when its swift, soft and funky. Aromas of ripe strawberry, violets, tar, dried cranberry and shaved truffles. Tight as fuck, almost undrinkable. This is a wine that I appreciate for its potential (30 years easily), but not for its style. I already see it all developed, complex and rewarding, but I'll stay away from it at least a decade.

Definitely made in a new world style in terms of its ripeness and oak treatment, this wine is surprisingly soft and supple. The red cherry, eucalyptus and anise create an impressive fragrance and then glide over the palate with a bit of tannin only showing towards the finish. The wine is fairly simple, but appealing for its flirtatious and outwardly attractive flavors.

Pours the typical brick-brown red color for a Barolo.... Nose is red fruit, tea, herbal, bing cherry... Flavor ripe raspberry/blueberry, balsamic, herbal notes with very drying tannins wrapped in the light fruit finish... Very drying tannins need food to enjoyed....

2017 Piemonte trip for Thuy's 40th!; 10/12/2017-10/15/2017 (Piemonte, Italy): Young but still very inviting, modern but not overdone on oak or extraction. Round but very energetic, dark fruits, cherry, light herbs. Very much a modern Barolo but still well made and has a charm. Drinks very nicely now but has a good path ahead. 91-92 for now

4 hour audouze, paired with a truffle cheese and porcini mushroom papardelle. Dried strawberry, tar, licorice/anise, camphor, roses, mint. Very chewy tannins (in a good way) and high acidity. Early in a presumed long life. Will try to wait 3-4 years before opening another.

Drank over two days. Be forewarned, while Barolo is my favorite region, I am a fan of traditional producers and have always shied away from the likes of Clerico. The aromas are rich and stewed, showing some alcoholic maraschino cherry, fermented plum skins, with just the slightest bit of light tar poking through. Palate entry offers medium body, initially showing flavors of rich black cherry, and upon aeration, one begins developing some graphite notes, but rapidly the tannins begin taking over the mouth. The finish offers more quite darkly complected fruit, primarily black cherries, some spice, quite a bit of acid, and a big wall of rich bitter coffee tannins that feel more like wood than they do fruit. There's also a slight bit of alcohol noted on the finish as well. This wine is actually better than I thought it'd be, but even at the price paid of $40, not a good QPR, and confirms it's not what I seek in Barolo. Due to the nature of the construction of this wine, I doubt it will improve with bottle age. Too bad I have many more...
3+ hour decant and the wine was quite expressive. Nose dominated by anise / licorice over integrated red fruit. Classic in the mouth but with obvious but not unenjoyable brett. Perfect structure, nothing out of place. My only concern is additional brett bloom in bottle.

Decanted, which is obviously needed for this young wine. Once in the glass this shows leather notes with dried cherry, brambly raspberry, and plum scents that incorporate black tea, fresh cut flowers, tar, and forest tree aromas with hints of eucalyptus, earth and mineral. On the palate beautifully structured strutting high acidity, ripe, firm tannins and mouthwatering flavors of dried cherry, plum, black tea, flowers, earth, leather, wood and goji with hints of mint, tar and graphite. Long through the grippy finish showing the dusty tannins playing against the juicy acidity.

The wine is young and perhaps will improve with another 6 years or so of aging. At present the color was deep red. There was no bouquet. Tannins predominated the tasting profile with fruit in the background. In october 2015 I had a bottle of the 1982 vintage of this wine. With age the wine was amazing with full fruit and typical Barolo character. I can only hope that this 2009 will develop in the same direction, but it is not there yet.

Similar impression to the one tasted in April, but it has put on some weight and structure and felt a little more closed. A little more reticent, with aromatics of dried fruits, dark and red berries, smoke, menthol, oak and some tobacco and tar. It's full bodied with pretty high acidity and high tannin that is present but ripe. Good length. A pretty Barolo from Clerico, I would give this a few years in bottle and drink the Pajana in the meantime. This is from a higher altitude location within Ginestra with East exposure and more white clay.

Lilac, flowers Lillie, sweet berries, touch of saddle. Palate has some oxidative rust, darker profile with dark cherries and some dough. Sticky tannins that I love and persistent finish with flowers and dried fruit. Always an exciting wine, and one I can't seem to allow resting time in my cellar.

Medium dark reddish garnet in color. Full, forward, aromatic & youthful nose of ripe dark fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of floral notes of roses & orange rind, tar notes, dried herbs, minty, anise, earthy, minerals, coffee, spices, dark cocoa and cedar. Full bodied with a good concentration of smooth textured yet still developing, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, strawberries & plums, dark cocoa, minerals, spices, herbs and a hint of toasty oak in the background. Some unresolved tannins in the lingering finish. Drinks well presently with decanting and extended airing but has potential for further development.

Tasted at merchant tasting. Beautiful and expressive aromatics of dried fruits, dark and red berries, smoke, menthol, oak and some tobacco. It's medium-full bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin that is very silky. Good length. A very pretty Barolo from Clerico, probably not on the level of the top vintages (like 2007) but still nice and it will provide beautiful medium-term drinking.

(100% Ginestra fruit - as always) Very fragrant and perfumed nose with brown/red spices. Lighter than the Pajana. Slight mint-herbal aspect with bright cherry-orange fruit. Very bright, medium body with tart crunchy red-blue fruits, more red: cranberry, strawberry, raspberry. Lots of stones and minerals. Needs time. Dusty tannins in cherry-stone finish. Nose: 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17/20.

The red cherry, eucalyptus and anise create an impressive fragrance and then glide over the palate with a bit of tannin only showing towards the finish. The wine is fairly simple, but appealing for its flirtatious and outwardly attractive flavors.

Decent enough, but nothing that really grabbed my attention. Dark red fruit, tar, espresso with good acidity.

A bit disappointing actually. Good but not nearly where expected....mamma asked if skunked a bit but just think wasn’t filled out.

This was easy to drink even though we popped and poured at a restaurant. Soft red fruit, herbs, flowers.

Modern and tasty. Drinking well now, but no rush. Lots of Piedmont on the nose, and lots of fruit on the palette.

This was excellent, especially for $40. Nice red fruit, a little earthy, well balanced. Perfect for us now but guessing it has a number of years ahead of it still.

It's a well made wine and in its early drinking window by now. Just for my taste it's a bit too modern and it a bit too sweet. If like modern-style Barolo, the score might as well be 92.

Softened about 30-40 minutes after opening. Some mint and leather on the nose. Pretty integrated tannins and fruit with a nice finish. Very nice with a sausage ragu/red sauce. Will save other bottles for a year or two.

An ok middle-of-the-road barolo, but doesn't really have a lot of character.

Had this at a group dinner at an Italian restaurant featuring wines from Spain and Italy. This fared very well. No real tasting notes, just a general impression. Its ready to drink, and I really enjoyed it.

Piemont Tour; 11/20/2015-11/22/2015 (Monforte, Serralunga, Barolo, Barbaresco): Teernase, tiefdunkle Aromen! Viiiiel schwarzbeeriger als Pajana, ebenfalls "angriffslustig" am Gaumen aber etwas eleganter, polierter... aber schon auch schwer einzuschätzen im Moment.
