Opened about two hours prior to service and allowed to breathe. Two bottles were opened tonight from the same cellar and both corks showed some saturation but only through the first 1/3. No formal notes. The 1999 Flaccianello pours a youthful ruby color with a slightly garnet rim and some signs of sediment though nothing I would describe as unusual. This is an absolutely delightful Flaccianello that I would still describe as “developing”. A mix of red and dark fruits with dried herbs, black tea, espresso, leathe and dried earth. The tannins are still firm and the acid is zippy yet everything is in perfect balance and well integrated. This was paired with a deconstructed BLT highlighting the produce from local area farms and salmon rillettes with turnips, fennel and orange. I don’t have a lot of experience with Flaccianello (or Fontodi for that matter) but this is a wonderful representation of Chianti Classico (although not designated such) and if the two bottles opened tonight are representative, this vintage has a lot left in the tank! Drink now with a little air to stretch its legs and over the next 10-15 years, no cap.
Beautiful brick color, reminiscent of a Barbaresco. Very smooth, really nice acidity and well integrated tannins. Sour cherry and plum on the palate and then leather and some mushroom. Really nice.

First of 6 bought at auction hoping there was still some life left and man did this deliver! Brief comments to be followed (hopefully) by a proper review next bottle.
Opened at restaurant and Somm surprisingly recommended decant, properly to remove the heavy sediment that we could see through the glass. When the wine was finally poured we could smell it as it sat in the glass on the table! Profound wafts of dense dried flowers and herbs. Sticking our noses into it, it was cassis, lavender, sage and meaty - the perfect pairing with the rib eye. The acidity was solid, the tannins totally still there although we’ll integrated and the finish went on forever. I can’t wait to try this again and really spend some time contemplating it. More to come.

Wow - a really seductive nose jumps out of the glass - sour cherry, leather and then a wonderful herbal / tea tree note and a perfumed finish - a really lovely nose
The palate delivers up dried cherry, ripe plum, tobacco. Still has some good acid and tannin grip but "à point" now.
Having left some in the glass for the rest of the meal it was a little faded by the end so if I had some i'd drink up though this has inspired me to be patient with my 06s and 09s.

Deep, dark ruby colour...almost black still. Lively nose of black fruit (blackberries and black cherries), cigar box, tar, spice and forest floor. Intense flavours on the palate, continuing the black fruit theme, tannins soft, but sufficiently structured to give this real grip and backbone into a full, rounded and so smooth finish. I held onto this bottle longer than was recommended, and am so glad I did, becuase it's holding up beautifully after 22 years. Just wish I had more !

This is really good. After a stellar 99 Alceo last week, this is another great 99 Tuscan, and finally a Flaccianello that seems ready to drink. With the exception of the fairly balanced 2013 Flaccianello vintage, my experience with both 2004 and 2007 Flaccianello has been one of big drying tannins even 15 years after the vintage, and very ripe dark fruit notes that border on tar and burned rubber notes. This 1999 is however not showing anything like that. A clean and fresh Sangiovese in its peak drinking window. While its not the most aromatic Sangiovese (perhaps this is just slightly past peak?), it is showing wonderful balance, and as usual a great companion to pasta at home. Unlike some of the 99 BdM I have had in recent years, this is not showing any signs of oxidation or excessive tertiary notes. Well stored bottles will hence easily last another 5-10 years.

1999s At Felidia (Felidia): Elegant, complex and balanced wine. Delicious. Nothing out of balance. The flavors meld together in a complex and savory way; aromas of prune, coffee grinds, olives, plum cherries are woven together and supported by a supple texture and a long aftertaste. The best '99 sangio of the lineup.

A lovely medium/full bodied wine with brightly gracious berry fruit, fine minerals, moreish acidity and ripe tannins all beautifully integrated with silk texture and long finish. Maybe too suave for some moods but excellent.

Wow, this is screamingly good right now. Still young but so fresh, balancing the cherry and shoe leather of a Chianti with the deeper tobacco and depth reminiscent of a Brunello or even a great Bordeaux. This didn't stand a chance, just drinking perfectly.

Fruit has faded on this bottle. Tannins still present. Not without charm, but less impressive than recent bottles. An aberration or indication of decline?

This a very complete wine with plenty of life left in it, I reckon it will be best from 25years of age +. Is this a quintessential expression of Sangiovese? The nose has a lovely cool quality, highly scented in a sensual way with lots of plum & black fruit with a touch of liquorice, tea and menthol. It’s a very well balanced wine to taste with good tannins and acidity; excellent structure though still young. There is a velvety quality to it and that black fruit again. It’s similar in tone to Bordeaux and therefore as different to Nebbiolo/Barolo/Barabaresco as claret is to Burgundy. It’s such a good wine though it transcends that comparison by virtue of being complete. 95+

Last weekend we had constant rain and the temperature dropped 8 degrees. We decanted a magnum of the 99 and sat comfortably inside for the afternoon and into the late evening sipping this fine mature flaccianello. It unfolded slowly, each layer had excellent length and no rough edge. Visually, the wine was a ruby red with a milky opaqueness. It was a real treat to savor and there was enough to really get a sense of how it keep evolving. It didn’t change dramatically over the 5 or 6 hours we tasted it but was vibrant and polished with excellent length. Very impressed.
Drink or hold to 2025.

Beautiful notes of dark fruit (black cherries, dark plum, cassis), also some sweet spices, dark mineral notes, dark chocolate and some herbs, as well as some tobacco leaf. It's full-bodied and dense, with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin that is very ripe and integrated. Very good length. An excellent Flaccianello that is drinking perfectly now (and for many more years).

The 1999 Flaccianello della Pieve is simply gorgeous, even hauntingly beautiful, displaying rich black cherry, plum, sweet dried spices and herbs. Here I'm find soft, silky textures, yet it's still so youthful for its age as vibrant acidity provides lift. Dark red fruits, sweet inner florals and herbs add a savory edge, giving way to fine tannin in the onset of resolution. The finish is long with black cherry, minerals and spice. It was hard not to drink this wine, instead of taste, which I hope I will one day experience. What a beautiful Flaccianello.

Drank last nite, a bit on the cold side and not decanted. Bricking, color is dark ruby red. Nose of cherries and tree bark. Still fruit here, tannins fully resolved, somewhat of an herbal quality. Wished I had had time to let it open and warm up. Still in good shape.

Unfortunately this was lightly corked which detracted from the nose and killed the fruit a bit. (I was the only one who noticed this flaw). Nonetheless, we drank it and everyone actually thought it was quite good - nice mouthfeel, good finish.

Initial wave of earthy barnyard aroma gives way to sweet plum-like fruit. Smooth, tannins are resolved and it is probably as good as it will get, felt that it was on the whole lacking a little complexity

Gorgeous nose, almost promises more than it can deliver. Lots of layers of flowers, dried red fruit, but dried in a soft way, like sundried, not oven dried, if that makes sense. Earth tones, mushroom layers. Palate matches, soft presentation, tannins smooth, dried fruit layers and earth, forest floor, beautiful long finish. Hard for me to tell with Italian wines if they are going to last longer as they seem aged even when young. I would drink now, cuz why wait?

Beautiful bouquet of rose and tobacco. Cherry/Strawberry and tobacco on the palate. Shows excellent complexity with a very long finish. Solid acidity and tannins remain, indicating there is no need to rush to drink this vintage. Note- do not be alarmed by its cloudiness- this is typical of an organic wine produced without manipulations and filtering.

Tuscany tasting: Nose of vanilla, pleasant oak, some barnyard. Medium intensity taste of red and black berries, in the beginning woody and tannic. Loved the mouthfeel, class and pedigree evident. Intense but temperate at the same time. With air there came salty olives, cedar tree, coffee, dark chocolate. Excellent.

Nose of a musty basement in the summer, some would say a dry forest floor, but this is a dry but musty basement -- beautiful. Mouth of sweet cherries leather and licorice on the first wave, then 10 seconds in incredibly a second wave of warm tobacco and remarably soft tanins. Perfect age for this wine. Gorgeous.

Slightly funky / animal on the nose, blows off a little. Certainly aged character. On the palate, still a fair bit of bite from the acidity and tannins suggesting further ageing possible but i wouldn't hold for too long. The fruit has faded a touch in favour of more secondary flavours - leather etc. Overall a delicious wine with considerable length, and a great food wine with refreshing acidity. But perhaps drink up within a few years.

Somewhat rusty at the rim. Indicates a mature wine. Fresh and fruity on the nose, however, hint of secondary aromas and mild hint of dried fruits. Also hint of sweetness (oak) - but seems very well integrated. Smooth start, develops well in mouth, very spicy and quite long aftertaste. Very well made - top structure. A very good wine - but in my view - not terrific. It is clearly a 90 point wine but Vigna del Sorbo from the same producer is at par with the Flaccianello.

The wine had been in my cellar untouched for about 10 years. The cork was in pristine condition and no wine fault was detected.
This is one of my favourite Super Tuscan wines that is made from 100% Sangiovese unlike other Supers that are blends that include Cabernet Sauvignon and or Merlot. I appreciate tradition and like my Italian wines to be "Italian". This Sangiovese wine was treated to 1 year of Oak which helps to give the wine a rounder character.
In the glass the wine has maintained its dark red character and shows very little sign of ageing. On the nose, the wine expresses classic Sangiovese cherry notes accompanied by notes of smoke, tea leaves, and herbs. In the mouth, the wine is extremely well integrated and round. I really enjoy reds that are treated to French Oak. A bit of spice in a wine that sits well in the mouth. Not the silkiness of a Pinot or the thickness of a Cabernet Sauvignon mind you...it is afterall, a Sangiovese meant to impart tartness. Flavours include tart cherries, green olives, and something akin to earthiness. A very good balance between acidity, tannins, alcohol, and oak makes this an extraordinary Sangiovese Super Tuscan that is now drinking at its peak. I cannot imagine that it will get any better than this. Drink now!

Milky rusted brown hue, full of suspension. The bottle neck was choked with residue. Decanted for an hour. Primary nose of spicy vanilla oak. Secondary aroma of plum. Medium body, good medium tannin with an opulent balanced mouthfeel. Exceedingly smooth and complex transition, leading to a long nice lightly tannic and leafy finish. The wine is past its prime but still drinks very well. One has to try it to fully appreciate the level of complexity.

Decanted half an hour before tasting; quite a bit of sediment. A little tobacco, Black currant (cassis), Rose, Chocolate, Plum, and Sandalwood on the nose. Very smooth and balanced, medium to full body, great warmth, dark fruits and a hint of anise, sandalwood, clove, tobacco, and chocolate.... Long finish. An elegant wine, delighted me and made my weekend! Best wine I have had for a very long time...

Dark red with some browning. Quite a bit of fine sediment which was largely decanted off before serving. Initially the nose with a little closed down and just showed some funk but over the course of an hour it really opened up with some tobacco, menthol, olives. Still plenty of tannin on the palate but fine and smooth, suggesting its got a few more solid years in it though definitely entering its drinking window now. Palate showed some sweet roasted san marzano tomato, cherry, tobacco, little bit of chocolate toward the finish. It was elegant with good acidity and especially during the last glass ,the finish just kept seemed to get longer and longer.

Super Tuscans and Gourmet Pizza: Had over 2 nights - on night 1 decanted for 2 hours before pouring back into the bottle for a blind tasting. Provenance was sketchy - bought at Whole Foods where it was sitting upright for 6 months as I debated buying. Cloudy in glass with some bricking around edges. Orange peel, red licorice, tobacco and black chery on nose. Palate was similar with medium+ acidity, medium body and medium+ finish. Tannins are well integrated but still grippy. Wrote 91+ on night 1 and 92 on night 2. 1st time with this wine and I really enjoyed this and would buy again.

Pristine cork, wonderful nose on opening, and my initial impression was that of an excellent, medium-bodied old world sangiovese with nice rustic qualities. However, with more time in the glass the fruit seems a little tired and not as bright or expressive as it should be, with a stewed quality to it and a unimpressive finish. I suspect poor providence but will reserve judgement until the next bottle. 87

Light but opaque crimson. Full-bodied but no signs of heat. Opens with a little band-aid--perhaps a hint of brett?--but in a good way, then alternates between the funk and some unusually dark fruit for Sangiovese. Smooth mouthfeel, long finish. Very good.

Mature color - surprisingly developed. We tasted this together with several Brunellos -and on average - the Flaccianello is more elegant and less powerful than the reference Brunello. The taste is elegant, nice structure and a long after taste. On the top now but can be stored maybe for - say 2 -3 years more.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Nose shows funky wet dog, cheese and some damp cotton. Light red and white pepper spice with a unique roasted tomato play. Menthol, green olives also show with more air and time in the decanter. The palate has a different sort of personality with more blue fruit. Some black licorice, anise and lots of barrique seasoning. An older sense - a gripping wine. Would work very well with food. Medium full body. Elegant. Really nice. Though I mentioned it seemed "older" there is still lots of life ahead for this bottling.

Very rich and savory. In the perfect drinking window. I couldn't keep my hands off this wine. Very sexy complex nose, with a silky smooth entry that shows some tannin - but very much secondary to the rest of the wine. Tasting note from a blurry memory. This was decanted 2 hours and consumed over 8 hrs during a Flaccianello veritcal that included 95, 98, 99, 01, 03, 04 and 05. My rank of the vintages: 99, 95, 03, 05, 98, 01 and 04.

Didn't seem as rich or well structured as the 1997 Flaccianello. We drank at dinner and thus did not allow for proper time to develop through decanting. Never-the-less I think this vintage is less impressive than the 1997.

Fontodi Vertical Dinner (Acquerello, San Francisco): From magnum. Savory, with some barnyard and gorgeous meaty aromas, really a wow old-school nose. Super palate, with rich cherry fruit, iron and cured meat flavors, and much finer acidity acid compared to the '95, '98 or '00. Less concentrated than the '00, but a much more balanced, interesting wine. Excellent wine, and my favorite of these four vintages.

Rich and elegant sangiovese here. Oak comes through--this wine shows the creamier, lusher side of sangiovese. Long, complex, nutty finish. Not sure if it's quite worth the money. Also not the most memorable wine ever, but excellent nonetheless.

We drank this on 12/30/07. I served it with Beef & Red Pepper Ragu with Penne. It was a great pairing. It decanted for about an hour…deep burgundy in color…blackberry, cherry, vanilla and mushroom aromas.

Wow, this is screamingly good right now. Still young but so fresh, balancing the cherry and shoe leather of a Chianti with the deeper tobacco and depth reminiscent of a Brunello or even a great Bordeaux. This didn't stand a chance, just drinking perfectly.

The fruit has rounded out and the tannins create a nice complexity. It's definiately drinking wine...could definitely finish the bottle without noticing... If you have it, drink it now!! Available at Sunset Corners, Casa Tua, and Ago in Miami.

Toscana 99 with Vitis Bergensis (Hotel Terminus, Bergen, Norway): Lovely nose in a different style than the former wines. Not as much punch, more subtle. Very nice. Also delicious on the palate. A little round, very long. Quite a bit of cherry. Not very much acid, but drinks very well without food. Probably not one for a very long life due to the relative lack of acid, but it is great now.

Great stucture licorice, saddle leather, high acidity. Needs more time but very good.

Earthy sagiovese nose. Massive red berry compote. Intense taste of red and black fruit jam. Tobacco. Smoky and toasty finish.

Occasional tasting group: Super Tuscans. (@ WB): Sparkling blood red. Smoky, toasted complex bouquet with some barnyard. This wine has a lot of everything; juicy fruits, a lot of alcohol, Long aftertaste with good tannin. No need to say this is a full bodied wine.

Another 100% Sangio Supertuscan. The nose was a little simple but the full bodied flavor made up for it. Luscious cherry and violet notes. This is only being poured in Chicago. 91.
