Niels guessed Pegau on this, and I understand why. Opens up with notes of farmyard, stones, flowers, light red fruit. It’s much leaner than Pegau though, elegant it is, moves along with marks of mint and lavender. I’ve never been disappointed. With Niels at La Contadine.

Served blind. Châteauneuf - I said right off, but I was thinking Pégau. It had the beef blood, certainly, the deep stony feel, but tasting it, it was much lighter, than a Pégau would have been. Fine mineral feel, impressive length. Ready to drink.

Still such a beautiful wine. Provençal herbs on the nose, cherry fruit, earth. Medium bodied, light on its feet, airy fruit with great purity, garrigue balm. It’s probably my favorite Charvin vintage. So easy to drink, such a joy.

Eleven years since I last tasted this? Wow, life is short, but this wine is aging wonderfully. The nose shows musky, green olive, anise and campfire tones over top of deep plum fruit. Dusty tannins and moderate acidity on the palate, with some mulled cherry and plum fruit. This is really spicy and fresh with lots of beef drippings, green olives in brine, morel mushroom broth, bacon fat. On top of those flavors, the zippy, fresh appeal is really appreciated. Beautiful showing.

This is still such a beauty. It’s on airy, light red cherry fruit, lavender and pepper notes. It’s cool with a great structure, fresh and delicious and still youthful. It’s just such a different animal compared to the 2005 next to it. Hands down the best wine of the two.

Outdoor mostly masked socially distanced B-day party: An unplanned bottle; a request for CdP. I've drunk a lot of Chateauneuf through the years, but not much recently. Charvin was always a favorite. To me, this was solid but uninspiring. Red fruit, garrigue, a little heat. The bottle was emptied, but didn't generate the awe or chatter like others.

Fully resolved tannins. Very smooth and probably drinking at peak now. Nose is rather discreet, no marked fruit descriptor. Confectionary sweetness. No noticeable alcohool bite on the attack. Very rounded, spheric midpalate that streches into cherry-infused finished redolent of the finer (subjective) expressions of grenache. Not super complex but structurally very balanced and scractches the same itch as Pinot from ripe vintages at a fraction of the price.

Clear coloring with fresh look. Very nice bottle showing pure fruits and dark flavors. Very happy with this. Was afraid of more oxidative qualities but this shows a freshness with garrigue and spice with the fruit punching softly in the background. I’d say start drinking them up if you have a bunch. Why wait.

Now this is an outstanding example of CdP, a caveat— decant this a good 60-90 minutes for a full bore session. Deep, brooding and exhibiting all the fine characteristics of the region. We enjoyed this as a pop and pour over a leasurely family dinner at Cafe Lago. Initially tight with wonderful aromatics, it blossomed throughout the night. No rush to drink as it will go another 5-10 years.

Lovely light red colour. Some lifted notes on the nose but with time this gives way to some green capiscum. On the palate it is red fruited and refreshing. Nice acidity, the 14.5% alcohol is masked. Savory, stemmy. Lovely bottle. (once I posted this note on CT I saw my previous TN, reassured by my consistency! and how this wine has held up. No rush to finish by the way)

Bye Bye Browns (Cryin' Lyon's): This keeps getting better for me! Last one almost 3 years ago. Very smooth texture stands out first. Kirsch, plum, anise, iodine/kelp, garrigue, and leather go on and on. Now-2024.

Still evolving, more relaxed now, pure light-red fruit and very mineral driven wine. Notes of lavender and thyme, a real child of Provence. Such a beautiful wine. Will definitely keep for another 5-10 years with ease.

Popped, poured, enjoyed over next 90 minutes. Started nicely and improved in the glass. I happen to really like the 2004 vintage in CdP and this, to me, is classic Charvin. Well balanced, elegant, and shows evolved complexity from its time in the cellar.

Decanted, tasted over 3 hrs, bottle from secondary market -ruby core, minimal bricking -kirsch, perfumed and rather complex mix of various elements come in and out including black pepper spice apple peel soil -med/med+ acidity, med weight, remnants of kirsch mild caramel element still some sappy residue on the moderately long finish with just a little heat and med- tannins that are starting to dry out a bit -mature now and starting on a slow decline but no hurry

Very charming wine with warm raspberry and blackberry flavors, garrigue with underlying barnyard notes. Black pepper, some spice and dried rosemary. Long in the finish. Decanted for an hour and it was still opening at the last sip.

A bottle from my stash in France. This is indeed very young, the fruit is light red, almost a mark of cranberry, it rests on a great minerality and liquid lavender. Phenomenal on the second day as well. Such a beautiful wine and so many years left.

Boys at PB (Charlottenlund): Light on it's feat - and too young, indeed; almost a bit petillant, very much on the light, sweet Grenache-fruit. Very elegant, very promising - the bottle was gone quite quickly. 93+ #PBwithboys

Lovely nose of primary ripe red and black fruits - very few secondary notes on the nose. Palate was a bit of a puzzle, as the wine jumped back and forth between overripe notes and bright, fresh ones. A bit perplexing, but the wine was by and large delicious. Not the best bottle of Charvin, but good enough.

2004 continue to be my favorite vintage for Charvin's CdP. It's not often I use the word 'pretty' about a Chateauneuf, but this is a pretty wine. The fruit is cool and collected, it is in the garden fruit spectrum of the scale, yet it runs with tremendous depth and poise. This is finally relaxed and smooth, showing marks of lavender and a hint of mint. I remember buying this for $29.99 because 2004 was deemed a soft vintage. I backed up the truck.

If I recall correctly this is 100% Grenache, the label states 14.5% but you wouldn't know it from the nose, it's there but in the background. Red fruit with a undertone of herb, a leafy green pepper aroma. No lift from alcohol. In a secondary phase. On the palate there's a slight kick of alcohol but it doesn't dominate. Not meaty or rustic, more fruity and clean. Savory is the lasting impression. Also decent length. Really good wine.

Been a while since having had this, tasted blind; dark fruit, really roasted fruit- hot year, unmistakably CdP, stones, lots of richness in the middle, still very firm structure fooled me as '09 vintage and fruit seemed a bit dark and muddled for Charvin- definitely bottle variation- no score.

Had over 2 nights next to the 2005 version. The aromatics are really great. Red fruits and violets. Possibly a small touch of brett. Overall I really enjoyed this wine but certain things concern me. I hope some of those things get sorted out. Slightly over ripe. Nice middle. The red fruits and tannins are in sync. The finish is slightly vacant and drying. Some mocha on the finish. Not my favorite. Nose and front palate are very elegant but then it gets a bit sloppy.

An awesome bottle! Strong nose and powerful palate with red berry fruit, spice garrigue, a little bit of licorice, a little bit of tobacco, and a nice stony minerality. One taster suggested some banana flavors and I could not disagree - there is something in the profile that reminded me of that. Very long finish.

Damn Winos (Ambrosia Restaurant in Eugene): Better than a year ago, this bottle was PNP at Ambrosia and a nice match for the antipasti. Red more than black fruit, berry, plum, spice/ licorice, and leather notes that opened like a flower over the hour it took to kill the bottle. Nearing plateau, very soft and elegant, but has 8-10 years.

2004 Rhone Tasting chez Lillelund (Lilleund's home): A beauty. So light and elegant, this Charvin, so earthy and distinct. Pretty red fruit; strawberry and raspberry, soft tannins. PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs, bottle from secondary market and imported by Adventures in Wine -nearly opaque dark red with minimal clearing at edge -grenache kirsch licorice vinyl -med+ acidity, med weight, OK depth, bitter licorice dominates elegant feel, fine med- tannins and good length, not much fruit or mature elements -OK,but this is not as impressive as prior Weygandt imported bottles bought on release, not sure if this is somewhat shut down or a slightly off bottle

Light red. Whereas a bottle last year had the typical Charvin red fruit to buffer the tobacco and licorice, this bottle was all of those non-fruit savory elements. Elegant but probably drying and on the downhill slide.

No cork seepage, perfect condition. Fresh strawberry, sage. Over time, a touch of horse manure starts to emanate, not unpleasant. Flavours are well wrapped in a structured and refreshing finish, which should only start to be in its drinking window (as other TNs have mentionned). Still has a bit of grip to shake off in order to be better.Tasted best in flared burgundy glasses.

2004 and Charvin = restrain and finesse combined. While this wine is still about its hidden reserves, this is a much better bottle than the one I drank about a year ago. The nose is understated, perfumed and floral and there's lovely lavender and herbs on the palate. Ends with a fine note of tobacco. Not as expressive as the the 2004 Rayas I drank with Niels in Ampuis last week but in the same mold in terms of elegance and finesse. Happy to see this wine is coming back to life after a dull period (for me).

After a number of barnyardy CDPs in the last year (including one or two Charvins), I was feeling a little gun shy on this one. No need, though, as this was a very clean, brett-free bottle. I last had this wine almost exactly 3 years ago and it has evolved beautifully in that time. The nose is a musky mix of sweet floral aromas, baked cherries (think warm cobbler), and brown spices. It's medium bodied and full of finesse on the palate, with raspberry preserves, pipe tobacco, and dried sage leading to a long, drying finish. If the tannins were less drying on the back end, this would merit an even higher score. As it is, though, it's an extremely satisfying wine that should drink well for at least the next 4-5 years.

Clear red with slight lightening. Nice aromatic mix of lavender, tobacco and light red fruit. Medium weight. Elegant, fresh, spicy, and complex with an anise core remaining to be resolved more than any residual tannin.

Not a great showing at all. Totally closed down, not showing much of anything. Didn't improve much on day 2, actually I thought the wine was slightly raisiny/oxidized. Very disappointing as Charvin is one of my favorite growers in Chateauneuf du Pape and 2004 is one if my favorite vintages over the past 10 yrs. Wait - for a while it feels like.

This is showing more of the darker Grenache profile, with more dark fruit than the usual Charvin red tones of strawberry and raspberry. Rather than the "pretty" Charvin profile, this is darker, brawnier, and woodsier, featuring tobacco and liquorice notes. Not under-fruited, but the primary fruit seems to have receded. Still has a way to go to resolve texturally, however. Perhaps better in two years or so, when that textural resolution happens, and more secondary and tertiary notes show. I was hoping that some air would brighten and sweeten the fruit some, but the wine remained constant. Somewhat underwhelming.

Opened, not decanted, for about 4 hours. This is drinking very well tonight. This is a classically styled cdp that's showing a lot of softer red and dark fruit, with reasonable depth and concentration. Garrigue, green, brambly underbrush along with loamy, earthy undertones and abit of licorice round out the med bodied palate. The tannins on the med length finish are fairly fine and chalky. All in all, this is quite nice and hitting its stride beautifully.

Perhaps CdP is losing its luster (in my palate). Even in a more elegant vintage and with a restrained style, the alcohol and density still seemed a bit much. Might have suffered following an aged Sociando Mallet. Nice strawberries and raspberries, a little funk in the background. Moist tobacco and garrigue. Just didn't rock my world tonight.

Seems to have shut down again. At least this bottle was very tight and restrained with the fruit lurking underneath but nothing beyond that really. A couple of 2004 Charvin Cotes du Rhones enjoyed recently have been much more approachable and ready. The good news is that it's all there.

J&K had the gang over for “France Reprise,” so we brought some foie gras to sear, and a mini-vertical of the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Charvin CdP to accompany dinner. No notes, but the 2004 was drinking very well, with a nice spice quality, and softening tannins; seems ready to go. The 2005 was powerful but not over the top, deep fruit and firm tannins, and showed the most promise of the three; a special wine. The 2006 was showing the least at this stage; maybe a touch austere at the moment. A nice trio, excellent meal, and great friends.

Drank side by side of the Pegau 04. This was all about finesse, delicate, with beautiful structure and acidity... but lacked of the typical Chateauneuf taste and punch that the Pegau had, or at least took some time and effort to show its origin. Different style than Pegau, and a slight edge for me for this one.

There is a good amount of musty, bretty, damp funk when first uncorked, rather horsey and reminded me of Donjon which I usually associate with browner and animál tones compared to the usual red fruit tones of Charvin. With air, some pine notes emerge, and the wine seems herbal, reminding me of Nonino Amaro, the digestiff (but without as much alcohol). As the wine aired, the brett receded and the palate came forward, showing fruit cake and spice cake, cherries and roasted peanuts, along with woodsy notes like twigs, underbrush and tobacco amidst the kirsch fruit. The structure here has softened, the wine is integrating well and comes across as more worn than last time, almost a year ago. That funk that began this wine stays over the course of the evening in the background.

-- popped and poured -- -- tasted non-blind over a couple days --
NOSE: DAY 1: initially tight, with raspberry and garrigue; savory; tart; lifted. DAY 2: deeper and fuller than on Day 1; a touch smoky.
BODY: medium-light to medium bodied; ruby color of medium-light to medium depth.
TASTE: DAY 1: medium-light concentration of fruit; medium-light to medium intense wash of garrigue; very long finish of moderate intensity; does seem a bit thin, which seems to be a hallmark of the ’04 CdP vintage; “Grenachey”; hint of fine tannin still hanging-on, but this does not come across as tannic; acid is sufficient and the alc. (14.5%) is well-hidden; overall, well-balanced and elegant. DAY 2: still well-balanced; hint of pencil lead; fruit is bit fuller than on Day 1; a bit better than on Day 1.

Although I appreciate the lighter, red-fruited style of Charvin, this bottle was a bit too horsey (leather and game flavors and scents) for my liking. Brett was abundant in this bottle though not to the level of some Bois de Boursan or Pegaus. The wine itself is beautiful (I have had several other bottles that were clean) if you cared to dig for it. Another thing I find is that Charvin's wines, when Brett is a dominant characteristic, they can take on an almost hard, unrelenting style where only devout grenache lovers care to realm.

Not sure if this was a bad bottle or a bad "phase" but, opened this with another 2004 CDP (Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils) and they both shared certain characteristics that I found unpleasant. The fruit had moved into a stewed raisin-esque realm, the wines came across hot, alcoholic, and disjointed. In both unfortunate cases, time and aeration did little to improve either wine's merits. Each bottle had separate provenance, and each were stored ideally by me, but neither presented well. Not sure what to make of it. At this point, I am wondering if I should wait until 2016 to open another 2004. Definitely NOT consistent with my previous note on this wine.

Delicious wine. Showing much better than my last bottle, six months ago. As PBaek describes, more relaxed and accessible. The first thing I notice is fig paste on the palate, which soon unfolds to cherry fruit, garrigue and light spice. The Charvin purity is evident. The mouthfeel is soft and caressing, the structure relaxed, and this is a wine that is very easy to drink until you note that the bottle is almost gone. In a very good place now, with the underlying structure to hold for years. Paired very well with an episode of Mad Men. UPDATE: About a third of the bottle remained on the counter overnight. The next night, it showed leaner and tighter than the first night, the tannin more apparent, and dark raspberry notes had emerged to join with the cherry. The firmer palate and the tannin having emerged suggest to me that this wine has many years left.

An outstanding bottle of wine tonight. More accessible and relaxed than previous bottles, this now shows pure red fruit, spices - in particular lavender and thyme - and just a bit of Rhone funk. Somehow this now reminds me of a younger version of the 2001. There is minimal intervention here between soil and bottle and it shows through in the wine, there are marks of soil mixed in with the red fruit. A fabulous bottle of wine that is just entering its drinking zone. Wow.

Right out of the bottle, aromas of earthy barnyard funk heralds the arrival of CDP, lurking under the funk is a layer of cherries and some drying hay. An hour later and raspberries and cherries move to the forefront of the nose while a touch of earth remains in the background, the wine has moved out of the barnyard. Paired with braised short ribs and polenta, the wine starts to toss notes of cherries, cola, garrigue, a touch of spice, and hint some bitter astringency along with the acid. This medium bodied wine is moving around like a lightweight, effortlessly transitioning between the fruit, the dark earth, the woody medicinal touch, and a smattering of olive on the palate. Definitely enjoyable, definitely light on its feet with subtle nuances. 91+ day one. Day two- The nose has mellowed, and the palate has gained even more subtle complexity. A veritable kaleidoscope of minute variations and transitions. First the wine tastes of earth and spice, then tart cherries and some darker fruit, then the garrigue visits on the back end. The fine tannins are noticeable on the finish... the finish that goes on for 60+ seconds, still transitioning between spice, earth, the tart cherries have picked up a touch of orange rind. 2 minutes later there is still a pleasant lingering sensation of flavors on the tongue. Truly a fun wine for those who appreciate subtle and varied evolution of flavors. It won't hit you over the head, but it will draw you right in if you are willing to listen. 92++

From a half-bottle. Restrained nose, darker berry fruit and a hint of spice. On the palate, there's raiseny fruit, leather and earth in balance with refreshing acidity. I really appreciated the weight of this wine, and it comes across as burgundian and in great balance. However, the finish a bit short and the wine seems to have lost a bit of fruit over the last year making me think that peak may have gone. That being said its a great drink and recommended if you are looking for an aged CDP from a quality producer at a reasonable price.

Had with grilled pork tenderloin. Bought at retail and cork wet 3/4 way so concerned about spoliage / oxidation. Wine was great. Light / medium red color with some bricking. Decanted for 1 hour. With all the Chateauneuf talk lately (yet another vintage of the century! Yippee!), I was in the mood for a young Chateauneuf. I'm a big fan of Charvin, but this was not a great bottle. The trademark Charvin red fruit purity is there, along with spices, iodine and peanut notes, but the palate shows some sharpness that detracts. Did not improve overnight at all; I poured the balance of the bottle out. Do not open another bottle for a few years.

Medium dark garnet. Some mineral and dark fruit at first then after a bit of time and swirlling the pepper, broth and herbal notes moved to the front. Slightly ripe dark fruit and pepper flavours and a long mid weight dry finish.
Very tight at first then it opened up into a slightly ripe but elegant wine. Lots of what one expects from the Southern Rhone in the nose and mouth. Excellent today but need a decant to bring out the nose. The tannins were soft but still quite obvious. I think this may improve a bit.

A great vintage for Charvin's Chateauneuf. I've been following this wine over the years and it has been closed down hard most of the time. While still young and still halfway in a shell, it is starting to blossom. The fruit is fine, red cherry and raspberry fruit in a subtle understated way. It is delivered in a very pure fashion together with spices and marks from the soil. There is elegance and refinement here, a great achievement for a wine that comes from the warm Southern France. I kept on coming back to this wine all night long, so intrigued by the fragrant nose. A great wine in the making.

Last but not least this 375ml showed quite well with sous bois, kirsch, spices and dark red fruit aromas. Palate of tart but sweet dark red fruit, licorice and forest floor. Acidity and tannins present but well resolved at this point. Drying on the finish but open for business on Pop & Pour. That said decant for an hour (+) and let it breath for best results.

My first 04 Charvin. Noticable brett on the nose with underlying floral and red, candied fruit notes. On the palate, this is a refined wine with soft red and dark fruit, earthiness, abit of iodine and a firm, well integrated and very fine grained tannic backbone. There's not a tremendous amount of depth and the finish is med. This is a very nice, old worlds styled CdP that is drinking nicely now but I suspect will improve with abit more time in the bottle. Needed about an hour in the decanter.

No notes taken, but it was very nice (although it doesn't quite have the purity I've found in the 2006). Tannins more substantial than I expected, but nicely structured and with beautiful balance. I need to keep my hands off the rest of them for at least another two years.

Très beau vin expressif, qui montre la classe et la fraicheur typiques du domaine. Savoureux avec ses arômes de confiture et de romarin. Peut-être la bouteille la plus "achevée" de ce vin que j'ai prise. Il évolue très bien.

On the first night, this was not as stacked as a bottle some seven months ago. It showed rather assertive and clean fruit, along with some forest floor, and some dry, silky tannin that gave it some textural interest and suggested that this wine still has a way to go to resolve. On the second night, the fruit is even more pure, very expressive, with cherry with a bit of raspberry, and the tannins are either completely eclipsed by the fruit or seemed to have just melted away overnight. Still, my thought is that this is still too young and will be better with a few more years of sleep in the cellar.

You get drawn into the glass immediately with the floral scents (violet/lavender), licorice and some spicy herbs. There is a teensy bit of brett, but it blows off moments after the pop n pour. Palate-wise, this is reminiscent of a Grand Cru red burgundy in that the fruit is sappy and acid-driven and there's a subtle almost weightless finesse with a driving finish. The flavors and aromas are all clean and transparent, just a real treat to discover.

Medium ruby color, not opaque at all. Red berries, licorice, garrigue spice, minerally. Quite acidic. Lengthy finish where the mineral takes over but pulling along some of the licorice. Outstanding.

Popped and poured no trace of brett on this bottle, just pure red fruit, licorice, a savory element comes out as the wine gets more air. This is very balanced wine with decent acidity and I think it is on par with some of the other nice wines from the vintage like the 2004 Domaine de Ferrand, 2004 Domaine Ferrando 'Colombis", and 2004 Rayas.

Much more giving and open than the last bottle I opened more than a year ago. Yet I still think this is a stop-and-go wine in the sense that it appears to give, then close down, then open up again while in the glass over several hours. A whiff of farmyard upon opening and then lavender and pretty red fruit on the nose. The wine is very pure and very well contained. On the palate, the cherry fruit is slightly bitter and it mixes in with spices. Good freshness here, lively fruit. It is encouraging that the wine is starting to open up and strutt is stuff and it will be interesting to follow over the next decade. I think this will be a beauty. To me, 2004 is strong vintage in the Southern Rhone.

Re-stocked on some '04s at half the price of the current vintage, and wanted to try a bottle. Initially, there's some brett/funk going on, some tight red fruit and that peanuty CdP thing. On the second night it really blossoms, the brett is less, a palate of red fruits and energy, a sappy, resiny core, held in place by silky tannins and plenty of grip. This is tasting young and stacked, a solid and surprisingly strong showing from what's supposed to be a weaker vintage.

91-92 pts

Medium garnet/rust color. Initial nose of banyard and earth...with some bright red cherry, licorice, garrigue (once the brett blew off a bit). On the palate, focused red cherry, licorice, really nice supporting acidity, integrated tannins and a medium finish. This wine is true to the Charvin style of pure, elegant expressions of CDP...more brett on the nose than the last bottle, but not at a level that is offensive. On day two this wine had gorgeous aromatics.

Nose of Strawberries jam, herbes de provence, licorice... in the month, ripe cherries, light integrated tannins, a lot of finesse... a very nice mature Charvin!

Medium bodied, dark but not opaque garnet, slightly dulled in color. Classic Chateauneuf, with beautiful darker red flavors of grenache, some dried herbs, bit of spice on the finish, this is a nicely "burgundian" CdP, not overpowering, just perfectly balanced, earthy, flavorful, and interesting. There is just the right amount of acidity, and some fine tannins almost in the background. Another in what I've come to respect as a classic 2004 CdP vintage.

This wine combines long, smooth elegance with all of the elements that I love in CdP. It is perfectly clean and gracefully balances red fruits with herbs, garrigue and fragrant earth.

Strawberry nose. Red fruit, baking spices and hint of the barn floor. Lovely, with that Charvin elegance and grace. If only CDPs could get that profile with lower alcohol. Maybe that's why I prefer CDRs for the quality price ratio.

This is starting to shed some of the intense, primary raspberry essence, and developing some complexity. Herbs and earth mixing with the lovely red fruit. Stellar.

92 pts

Only a short note from retailer tasting. The nose has some tobacco and dark fruit, very smooth body, some spice bot not exciting. It also shows some green/stemmy component, especially on the palate. Overall a nice wine but not impressive give the price (88-89pts)

Drank from a magnuime with smoked chicken off the Big Green Egg. Delicious flavor profiles of spice, red raspberries, earth and barnyard funk. Needs air as this was opened about 2 hours before dinner. Not nearly as good as the 05, but very drinkable with some air.

The most enjoyable glass was the glass I poured 9 hours after decanting the wine. Sweet raspberry and kirsch in a very restrained way. Spicy and peppery. The purity of fruit, balance and elegance I am looking for in Charvin is there but it is very subdued right now. This needs some time to come around. I would say try next bottle in 2011.

Poured from a Magnum. Decanted for two hours and drank with dinner. Bright color and nice floral and spice nose. Complex tastes of red current, spices, and funky earth. While you wait for your 05's to unwind these are great!! Delicious.

Totally enjoyable, but not particularly exciting. Very well balanced, showing tight raspberry, kirsch and peanut shells, classic Chateauneuf, but somewhat demure. Not to suggest that demure is a flaw, but I will put the rest of my bottles into the cellar and try again in 2-3 years, when I think the wine will soften in texture, come out of its shell, and be more expressive. B/B+ now, but I see A- potential in a few years.

Lovely spicy nose with notes of dark fruit and tar. Big, big, spicy, fruity mouthful with a lot of spice retaining the finish long after the fruit had faded. All in all, pretty spicy... First of a 3-wine CdP Flight at an excellent offliner in Devon. Staved off stiff competition from Versino Bois de Boursan 05.

90-92 pt

Lovely, clean, pure fruited Chateauneuf du Pape. Not nearly as layered or explosive as the Pegau tasted last week, but very precise, full of red fruit and nicely integrated throughout. A wonderful wine to drink over the next 10 years. (90)

Dinner at Marche Moderne: This is the first time I have drank a Charvin from my own cellar. Although I rarely do long decants on a wine I have not tasted, my recent experience with 04 CdP has been very positive when the wines see a good amount of air. So I decanted this about 5 hours and then it sat in an open bottle for a few more hours. I really enjoyed this. The fruit is at the fore on this wine right but it is wonderful fruit. It all seemed pure and smooth. Seamless right through to the finish. We didn’t talk about the wines much but I think this was the clear favorite… although I would probably give the nod to the Chevillon.

Popped and poured to go along with the remnants of the previous evenings 05. Bright chery (not as dark as the 05). A well balanced wine that showed some kirsch and bramble mixed with herbs. I delighful wine that I am glad to have in the cellar.

Restrained - Elegant or a bit shut down? Red fruits, spice, floral notes, but all very restrained on the nose. On the palate it's all there, but just barely. Not much in the mid-palate and really no finish. My 1st Charvin so I can't say if this restrained nose and palate are part of the reason I hear so many call it a Burg lovers CDP or if its just closed down?

Somewhat restrained nose with ripe red fruit (strawberry, cherry) and a hint of kirsch; a slight stemmy feel. Very balanced palate, with sweet Grenache fruit (red berries etc.), some chocolate, good acidity and a fair dose of kirsch liqueur. Good after-taste. Very drinkable, but the very slight green touch might be off putting to some. This is probably beginning to close down and should be left alone for about 5 to 6 years, if my experience with Charvin is repeated.

Clear medium ruby in color; Spice and floral aromas with very pure strawberry, cherry, garrigue, and earth flavors. Complex and balanced. In this stage this wine was very reminiscent of Pinot Noir with an earthiness in the foreground. This young CDP should develop complexity with bottle age. Well-priced for a quality wine at ~$40. 91+ with potential. [Opened up after a 30 minute decant]

Parker l'a sous-estimé. 92+

A solid, solid effort from a producer often under appreciated and overlooked. Great balance, freshness and finesse underneath a robe of grenache and bramble. Some tar and earth also evident. The second night, the wine had mellowed to an almost burgundian style. Smooth, no rough edges and subtle fruit. I went back and ordered four more bottles today--at $50 I would encourage others to buck up and park some of these in the cellar!

Dinner w/ basecadet, mimik, steve8, Vinaigre (Au Pied de Cochon, Montreal, Canada): Medium-dark garnet colour. Aromas of candied currants, spice, red licorice, and red plums. Medium-bodied, with mineral, currant, spice, and opens to show hints of raspberry ganache. Short-moderate finish, ~20s. Adds weight and length with time. Will improve with cellaring.

Ruby pink to clear at rim. Super floral / violet perfume. There is a lot of sweet red Grenache fruit and pepper mixed with Herbs de Provence. Just a gorgeous nose. The wine has light to medium body with very good intensity. A bit tight tonight but living up to its reputation as a “Burgundian” CdP. It does fall off a bit quickly on the finish. The nose and wonderful fruit attack are the winners tonight, though it will be interesting to see if it fleshes out a bit with age. Try the next bottle in 2012. (90+)

$69.99 retail, before discount. When first opened it was fairly closed on the nose, but it opened considerably given an hour+ of air. Fairly high toned, perfumey red fruit and spice rack notes. On the palate, bright red fruit and spice, with impressive balance. Terrific mouthfeel / texture. Quite refined. Good underlying acid / tannic structure. This bottle was just shipped, so I expect it to show even better once it settles in... At this point in its development, it would be a shame to not take a couple hours with this wine to let it open up and reveal many more layers than it showed initially when it was just opened... Very impressive.

The 2005 was powerful but not over the top, deep fruit and firm tannins, and showed the most promise of the three; a special wine. The 2006 was showing the least at this stage; maybe a touch austere at the moment. A nice trio, excellent meal, and great friends.

Day two-
The nose has mellowed, and the palate has gained even more subtle complexity.

Very tight at first then it opened up into a slightly ripe but elegant wine. Lots of what one expects from the Southern Rhone in the nose and mouth. Excellent today but need a decant to bring out the nose. The tannins were soft but still quite obvious. I think this may improve a bit.

It is delivered in a very pure fashion together with spices and marks from the soil. There is elegance and refinement here, a great achievement for a wine that comes from the warm Southern France.

Palate-wise, this is reminiscent of a Grand Cru red burgundy in that the fruit is sappy and acid-driven and there's a subtle almost weightless finesse with a driving finish. On the palate, the cherry fruit is slightly bitter and it mixes in with spices. Good freshness here, lively fruit. It is encouraging that the wine is starting to open up and strutt is stuff and it will be interesting to follow over the next decade. I think this will be a beauty. J’ai l’impression que lorsque ce sera fait, on le trouvera moins puissant et long mais plus voluptueux que les autres millésimes post-2001, grâce à cette jolie texture.

Interesting - this bottle tasted like garrigue gone ganja. This bottle had very strong ganja aromas and flavors. Not that there is anything wrong with it. Probably just a funky phase. ;)

90-92 pt

Brilliant ruby red, ripe nose of crushed raspberries, glycerin, all-spice and kirsch, ripe raspberry fruit driven palate with lots of acid, tea leaf with hints of damp earth, sweet finish dominated by dusty, sweet but gripping tannins

Lovely, clean, pure fruited Chateauneuf du Pape. Not nearly as layered or explosive as the Pegau tasted last week, but very precise, full of red fruit and nicely integrated throughout. A wonderful wine to drink over the next 10 years. (90)

This was a good bottle, with good fruit and no greenness, still very primary, but accessible in its youth.

At Harvest Moon with Mom. Started off quite closed, with medium tannins. Opened up to reveal a very pure wine, with terrific focus. Stunning clear ruby color, with bright raspberry fruit. Very, very nice. This needs a few years (or if drinking now, decant for at least an hour).
