Brought by JH/CG. Based on a poor vintage with just shy of 20 years under its belt, I was curious where this would fall (caveat I love CDLR and Dujac but am a fair grader loyalties aside) especially with stem inclusion- and wow it did not dissapoint and if anything exceeded expectations. Yes there are the expected vintage components but in the background not distracting rather in this case adding to the complexity. While the herbal and funk is there it is subdued, in the background and compounds nicely with an almost Aged Barolo balsamic (light but there) note along with the multi layer palate. As always a great mouthfeel with plenty of time left Vs hanging to drink them all today. Loved it.

Translucent garnet with very slight bricking at the edge.
A bit of ginger/allspice/cinnamon element, pinot funk, dark red fruits, cranberries, and a prominent herbal element on the nose.
Dark red fruit, cranberries, with a bit of tannic aftertaste.
For me, this wine was the paragon for the unpleasant "green meanies" in 2004 burgundy. The first bottles I tried were pretty uniformly bad. It has transformed. Not great, the herbal element on the nose does not appear to be something that will ever fully dissipate, or fully harmonize. The palate is nowhere near what a Dujac Clos de La Roche should be. However, the wine has gone from undrinkable to "a pleasant dinner companion" [to quote the Burghound]. While I agree that Dujac Clos de La Roche should be far more than merely a "pleasant dinner companion," sunk costs will make you take what you can get.

PnP. Initial nose is quite reserved but open up after 45 min in the glass with note of tea, Chinese spice and wood. Tannin is fully matured and integrated with some fruit, tea. Medium finishing. Best 2 hours after opening, and carry well for another hour. No sign of distasteful vegetal notes for typical 2004 vintage.

Unfortunately Dujac did not manage to avoid the vegetal tone that is found in most 2004 reds (some of the best producers avoided that in 2004 by later harvest and rigorous sorting). Maturing red berries and dried herbs with mild green cabbage and green tannins. Still carries a Grand Cru shadow and complexity but not as enjoyable compared to the 2006 and 2005 served next to it. (89/100)

Domaine Visit & Tasting at Dujac (Morey St. Denis): Served blind from a bottle open ~24 hours. Smoky black cherry. The palate is lean and a bit clipped. Clearly a lighter vintage. Surprised to learn 2004 as the wine wasn't at all green. Mid to high 80s, none the less.

Domaine Dujac Cellar Visit and Tasting (Morey-St.-Denis): Tasted blind at the domaine. Mature red fruit with good balance, seemingly from underripe vintage. I thought it 1er Cru from perhaps 1995 with nicely resolved tannins and fully mature fruit. Bottle had been opened the day before. Best I can ever recall for this wine.

Dark brick with a pale rim. Aroma fills the air even before “swirling” - plums, black cherries and orange peel, so much fruit, but also gamey, spicy and forest floor. What a complex nose! Powerful flavours (for a Burgundy) of fruit and spice, rich, full-bodied and structured, with a very long finish. Classy juice.

No need to drink this wine once opened or even to consume food-- the nose overwhelmingly supplants both. An amazing combination of rich, deep, Burgundian forest notes, with dark smoked cherry, moist moss and earth, woody overtones and huge depth. A 97 if nose were the sole determinant.
But it is not. And the palate, which is quite ready with minimal decanting, expresses nicely as a 2004 with no green or acidic notes. But it is more like a 91( hence the modified score), providing deep, extracted wooded cherry, smoke, plum, leafy tones, but with a dry overhang. So mellifluous and full to the end, but not full sweet or rounded fruit. A pleasure nonethless.

Opened at Troquet in Boston, decanted, tasted over 2 hrs -med dark red slight clearing on edge -expressive floral stems cherry spice complex slight '04 green-ness -med acidity, med- weight but good depth and complexity with slightly bitter almost rustic feral '04 component, good length with med- tannins -very pleasant for those not turned off by a little '04-ness, was actually a better match for our dinner than the 2007 Drouhin Musigny opened at the same time, like many '04s this appears to be on a rapid aging trajectory and is on what is probably its mature plateau

Great wine with great friends (Long Island): Bright cherries still poking through, could get some age on it and also some of the oak. It's nice. Has a deeper flavor to it than I would have expected for a Pinot. Surrounded by some very big wines, but held its own.

HDH Bordeaux Auction; 10/30/2015-10/31/2015 (Chicago, IL): This was served without knowing the vintage, but it's not too hard to place. The colour definitely pegs it at around 10 years, and the initial tobacco, orange peel, and weedy nose makes 2004 an easy call. It doesn't suffer from the green meanies per se, but there's a brown spice note on the palate that is quite persistent. Thinner texture and concentration, but the Dujac spice is kind of there.

Less than average wine with the 04 greeness evident on the nose and finish. It was drinkable and opened up a bit over dinner. The green character diminished a bit but did not go away. Drinkable with food but other than that a complete waste of $$$. Note that we like Dujac's wines and have other vintages.

I sometimes post a note on a 2004 Burgundy that seems to go against the grain of those who automatically tie the 2004's to unrepentant grapes, ladybug taint, etc.
Opened a 2004 Clos de la Roche - Dujac a couple of nights ago to accompany a chicken breast dish with a red wine sauce. Only medium ruby in colour, which I find common to many Dujac wines; exceptional aromas that penetrated the nostrils and featured sweet cherry and spice, along with an element of oak; round and full on the palate with a lot of sweet cherry and raspberry - some red plum also - fine balance and structure framed by soft underlying tannins, acidity and some vanillan oak; lasted well in the aftertaste that extended out with the attractive flavours with absolutely no green characteristics some feel as part of the 2004's. This was a truly fine Burgundy.
I think that my supply here in the cellar is unfortunately exhausted, but I still have some in my cache at the golf club.

From magnum. Aromas of pure cherries, raspberries, minerals and spice. Lovely smooth palate, slightly greener than the nose. Great raspberry and cherry along with floral and spice. I would say this was one of the better '04 burgs I've had, but still lacks the balance I would expect from Dujac.

Dinner w/ Dave and Chris (Our house): Sappy black fruit on the nose. Ash/charcoal, coffee, and dense, slightly scorched black fruit. Weighty in the mouth, with a green/herbal streak running through from start to finish. After 48 hours under Vacu-Vin in the fridge, this had shed most of its greenness, but was also beginning to oxidize. The 2004 Dujac Clos St. Denis, tasted alongside, seems like the better wine of the two, IMHO.

Dinner at Steve Sigmond's House (Dujac, Vogue, Rostaing, Boillot, Suduiraut): Deep ruby red color. The nose is a bit less intense than the Clos St. Denis, but is more complex and interesting. Brooding dark fruit, mushroom, mineral, and forest floor dominte this intriguing nose. There is also a roasted coffee/charred barrel note that adds interest. The taste is seemless and balanced, but a little compact at the moment. the tannins seemed ripe to me, although Steve and Chris both thought they were a little green. The finish is very nice. I'd say the raw material is here for this to develop into an excellent wine with additional bottle age, but given the price of these bottles there are probably surer bets out there.

Seattle Tasting Group 'End of Year Dinner' #5 (Sammamish, WA): Super scorchy, intense toast, BIG notes of stem, gorgeous balance. Nice potential but painfully young.

Clear dark garnet. Mushroom, pinot spice, underbrush, & smoke on the nose. Dark fruits, cranberry, some mocha, an herbally component, and smooth tannins on the finish.

Trip to Burgundy; 3/20/2006-3/24/2006 (Burgundy): Lots of red fruit, not as ripe as usual. spice from stems coming through with some harshness, without the typical Dujac perfume.
