Halloween party with stuffed pumpkin. Delightfully aromatic fruit on the nose and palate. Still energetic and good acid - just a ton of fun to drink, especially out of the jeroboam

Six years on since last bottle, the sweet improvement from some years of cellaring really shows. Deep red fruit, tannins have come together nicely, acidity still present. Medium+ length, nicely balanced.

In a sweet spot. Started with what seemed like reductive brett aromas that blew off over 20-30 mins. Behind that was a lot of fresh, vibrant red fruit with some florals and game. Tasty - can be drunk by the pitcher!

Flower Day - decanted off some fine sediment (fair bit stuck to the side of the bottle). Left in decanter for an hour before having with prosciutto, sage and mushroom wrapped pork tenderloin. Nicely mature with lots of fruit and silky on the palate with a long finish. Still a long ways to go on the plateau.

So, so good. Regrettably the last of my 2014s. This was the wine that got me truly hooked on Cru Beaujolais. Just perfect tart fruit, sunshine and tiny bit of funk.

Great bottle. Lots of fresh strawberry and a little natty funk that blew off quickly. This N bottling held up to the cellar age. Wife and I really enjoyed this.

45 minute decant. Medium garnet color. This one continues to perplex me. Upon opening, there is a reductive aroma that is strongly reminiscent of brett. After a while, it mostly blows off, but never goes away completely. The flavor profile is fresh and clean, even after several years of bottle age. Savory tones dominate the fruit notes. All in all, while interesting, and undeniably tasty, it ultimately lacks depth, complexity and nuance. I have consumed a case of this cuvée, and I don’t believe it has lived up to its promise, especially considering its price.

Delicious, exquisite wine. It still tasted very fresh as natural wines do, but I think the body had become fuller and softer with some cellaring. I wish I had more. The fruit was more muted but still present. Loved every sip.

Light ruby garnet. Candied aromatic dark fruit on the palate, saladitos (salted plum) on the nose with hints of coffee, nutmeg, and mocha. Bright red fruit on the palate with strong acids,, light tannins, lovely aromatic back notes on the crisp medium finish. Light body, low alcohol (12%). Excellent with bean and cheese burritos from Anita Street Market.

Tasted over two days, certainly better on Day 2. Initially a wee bit closed, chalky, heavy on the bitterness. On day 2 wakes up with a much more friendly face, fruit galore, strawberry, kirsch ... Ib loved it. #Ib&Pia#Kandestederne

Autant le 2013 m'avait terriblement déçu avec ses arômes d'écurie négligée, autant ce 2014 est d'une pureté exemplaire. Sur le fruit, tout en finesse et si digeste. Bravo Lapierre!

Beautiful translucent purple hue with crystal clarity. Aromas of underbrush and red berry are plentiful.
On the palate, juicy herb-flecked dark red fruit is accented by minerals and earth. Very, very silky finish of more red berry herb-infused goodness. Just enough acidity to keep this wine from feeling flabby.
Delicious wine that is in a great spot and likely near or at peak, but should hold for at least a few more years.

N bottling. Brown stems, a bit of brown leaves and earth, mild jolly rancher cherries, herbs, and minerals. Palate w tart red cherries, a bit of bubble gum, herbs, minerals, and bark. Excellent acids on medium body. Mild tannins. Nice finish of tart cherries, earth, minerals and bark. Evolving nicely. Delicious.

Unsulfured cuvée. Light red center with faded rim. Fennel and earth aromas. Light weight. Crisp, tart black fruit and herbs. Lip smacking, saline finish. I just love the energy and lightness here. It doesn't get much more classic than this. Who says that no/low sulfur wines can't last if the balance is there?
I have a ton of wine that's more expensive (pls don't tell my wife!) including some Beaujolais, but I can't remember tasting anything more delicious pop 'n pour. Wow!

Beautiful, spicy nose with an almost unctuous body without feeling heavy. Showing very mature now. Dried blackberries, crushed autumn leaves, rose oil, ground cinnamon. Most of the youthful fruit has faded. Very robust and mouth coating with fine tannins that linger on the finish. Ruby, almost brick red with no browning. Perfect cork and cellared since release. I’m glad I opened it when I did!

Red berries, roses, incense, dry heath on the nose. Dry blackcurrant fruit on the palate, light bodied, pronounced acidity on a light but aromatic tannic base, lovely recapitulation of all these elements on the well modulated finish.

[Magnum] Thoroughly enjoined this again, and on review think my July 2019 note remains spot on. Accessible and straightforward, lighthearted and playful, but not as concentrated or as wild as the ‘15 Cuvée Marcel a few nights ago. Still youthful and probably has upside. A real crowd pleaser with build-your-own-burgers après ski.

PnP. Upon opening not much going on flavourwise. Had expected more, although having tasted an earlier vintage (2001) some years ago, that bottle didn't live up to its makers reputation either. After an hour and a half some fruity notes detectable as well as a certain smoothness. Have two bottles left and will experiment in drinking them in 5 and 10 years from now. They will probably evolve into Burgundy-styled wines, as the Beaujolais locals usually confirm they will develop eventually: "ca Pinote!"

Multiple hour decant. Still some tannins and not much else. 2nd ay after pouring back into the bottle but left uncapped on the counter, the violets on the nose, and the fruit and gamay character came out. Hold or many hours in the decanter.

A tad softer than expected. Lovely cherry, red fruit, cranberry, more on palate than nose. Nicely rich Gamay character. Drank over two nights, sturdier on second night, less complexity and a bit darker. Doing just fine but don't see much virtue in holding any longer.

Very Beaujolais with hints of crushed strawberries and some fine thyme. A juicy and well balanced wine. In a good place right now. You can keep this and maybe it will become more layered but it will probably also lose its fruit. So depending on how you like this, you kan drink or keep.

This wine is really singing today. I loved it. Vastly different than just six weeks ago. The wine had a meaty quality, with cherry and cranberry in both the nose and palate. A new note on the palate was a pronounced licorice note, that I particularly enjoyed.

Improved a bit with about an hour of air. Cranberry and cherry aromas on the nose and palate. A refreshingly juicy acidity, which paired well with roast chicken on the Big Green Egg. If memory serves me, I believe I preferred the 13 to the 14.

Popped and slow ox'd for around 30 minutes. Pale ruby color, slightly cloudy. Just fantastic right from the start with dried cranberry, pomegranate, raspberry, earthy, rocky soil, a bit of dried herbs du provence, high toned florals, likely lavender. Wow. Mostly carries through to the palate with a perfect balance of tart red fruits with earthy, mineral driven flavors and a silky mouthfeel and finish, yet only 12% abv. The winemaking on this was superb and the wine drinks like a really good burgundy as a result. Not sure how this would be any better so I think it's in a prime drinking spot right now.

Correct.

So much better than its previous showing. Red-fruited and weightless on the palate with fresh acidity, it approaches my Platonic ideal for Gamay and is the finest Lapierre Morgon in over a decade IME.

Drank from magnum. Pale, slightly cloudy, ruby color. Great aromas right out of the gate with some floral notes, strawberry and cherry with a little bit of earthy soil type notes in the background. Simiilar flavors on the palate with subdued red berry fruits mixed with earthy, slightly mineral driven flavors. Medium+ acid, medium- tannin. Drinking great and just really enjoyable with food or on its own.

This bottle was decanted for sediment. A star bright ruby core leading to a lite pink leading to a clear meniscus. Scents of earth, wild strawberry and clove. The palate is smooth and has a lovely focus with a smooth and lingering finish that shifts back showcasing the lively acidity that frames this nicely. The tannin has resolved a bit since last year, but is still presently offering a level of structure that confirms the ability of these wines to age gracefully with years ahead for this vintage. Outstanding!

[Magnum] This nose is massively fruity with bright raspberry and blueberry. Very playful primary aromatics. I don’t see the bubblegum people use to describe Beaujolais, this is all fruit punch right now, and without any earth tones or secondary development either. A hint of greenness that could be stems. Lots of fun on the nose. On the palate this is straightforwardly delicious, easygoing, bang of fruit punch up front with surprising staying power. Some tartness to the raspberry. Surprisingly weighty mid palate and powerful finish. Still stylistically lighter than anything I could compare to. Good and a lot of fun. Is all Beaujolais like this?
This is serious Beaujolais. Everything is in balance. Need a little decant to fully express itself. Will probably evolve for a couple of years but very good right now. I am sad that it was my only bottle.

If you want to impress a Somm with a bottle of wine, bring a Grand Cru Gamay. I hate using the term Beaujolais. It gives a lot of people the lesser impression of Beaujolais Nouveau which; equates to the impression left by Blue Nun in the 70’s/early 80’s and Yellow Tail in and around 2000.
This is one of my favorite producers of Gamay, a member of the “Gang of Four”; Lapierre, Thevenet, Foillard & Breton. There is a fifth honoree member to the “Gang of Four”, Yvon Metras, who I enjoy equally. If you want to finally appreciate this varietal, look for one of these producers from Morgan or Fleurie.
The nose reveals; dark cherries, blackberries, dark plum, blood orange, stewed plum, baked strawberries, blueberry hues, spearmint, granitic minerals/soil, dark berry cola, orange peel, thyme, rich forest floor, touch of cinnamon, very light caramel, dark chocolate, Indian spices, berry bubblegum, touch of band-aid, steeped fruit teas, limestone minerals, a whiff of black pepper, dark red, purple fresh flowers with shades of violets.
The body is full, rich and guides over the palate. It shows some tannins. The structure & tension are still big. The length and balance are at the beginnings of truly rounding into butterfly form. Still will benefit from 5 plus years in bottle. Bright red florals are far more pronounced on the palate. Ripe/bright; dark, tart, cherries, blackberries, dark plum, stewed plum, baked strawberries, dry raisins, half baked rhubarb with lovely blueberry hues. Spearmint, tree sap, granitic minerals/soil pressed in to the palate, dark berry cola, thyme, rich forest floor, touch of cinnamon, very light caramel, dark chocolate, Indian spices, berry bubblegum, touch of band-aid, steeped fruit teas, limestone minerals, hints of black pepper, dark red, purple fresh flowers with shades of violets. The acidity is like a warm summer rain shower. The long, rich, ripe, well balanced, elegant finish is nicely persistent for minutes.

Balance of light funk, red and black berries, and a core of minerality with a light, juicy, mouthfeel. A slight hollow drying woody note between the initial attack and the sappy mineral finish. High acidity and low chewy tannin. Not as great as my previous bottle, but still a lovely glass. Drinking well now, but can age for at least a few more years.

Berries, darker fruit, and funk in the nose. Such fruity, juicy goodness on the palate, with a bit of barnyard funkiness and some sappy, herbal character. Very silky, mouth-filling richness. Light but very chewy tannin. Acidity is high; mouth watering. Really enjoyable now but just a baby.

Deep ripe strawberries and black raspberry fruit, leaning from red to purple in profile with an ever-so-slight hint of rhubarb and orange rind. Ripe, round fruit sits atop a linear mineral base. Contrast between the round fruit and linear base creates a bit of a void in the middle that is tough to fill (this was remedied by using a narrower glass, though at the expense of subtly). Subtle ancillary notes of herbs, gamebird, smoke, and damp dog. Medium finish and with good balance and poise.
Good to very good

This bottle was decanted for sediment. A star bright ruby core leading to a salmon pink meniscus. Scents of earth, cherry, and a hint of wild strawberry as well. The palate is smooth and laser focused as the finish expands across the palate like the wake behind a boat. There is a freshness of fruit that is framed by the acidity and a hint of tannin that is still noticeable. This is such a lovely wine for the money and I couldn't be happier. Why don't I buy more of these? Outstanding!

Brief note from memory. Magnum purchased off the list. As compared to the '16 I had recently, drinking far more subdued, from the fruit to the more resolved tannin. Fairly primary still, but this has settled into a nice place. Not too open aromatically, but soft red fruits and some lingering tannin, yet highly drinkable. Still has years of life left.

Different as compared to the bottle I had 2.5 years ago. This one had a mild acetic flavor that, with a little air, nicely integrated and added complexity. But not a completely clean bottle. Still beautiful and graceful with plenty of red-berried bojo smells and flavors.

Kind of like MADTOWN said. I'd add, there was a bit of underlying earth/mineral tension to go with the red fruit/strawberry. Not a lot of fragrance/nose, but a very nice palate and finish. Day 2 note--more cherry/black cherry chiming in for last 1/4 of the bottle.

Compared to a year ago or so this is more open and like many good wines second and third night is when the magic happens.
Blood oranges, cherries, softer tannins (compared to last time around) and good acidity. Also earthy mineral notes together with great energy. Great balance and a lightness feel to it while also some tannin coating the mouth. Long great finish.

Great and refreshing juice with lots of red berries (young cherries, raspberries, lingonberries), marked by high acidity. Some smoke and bacon in the background; good medium to medium+ length. A bit of brett on the nose (quite a lot at first) but no apparent flaws.

WOTN on Super Sunday (in a no-slouch lineup with Dauvissat, Pegau, and De Fargues). Beguiling nose of florals, cinnamon, and bojo funk. Gorgeously silky and red-fruited palate of effortless balance and charm. I'd said the Thivin was my favorite 2014 from the region, but this wine gives it a run for the money, albeit a totally different expression of the grape.

I bought a bunch on release and just wanted to make sure all is ok since Non sulphur version. According to back label and importer this needs very stable and low cellar temperature. The wine has already integrated some and not as green as my previous encounter. I loved it then as well. Great freshness with herbs, pepper, cherry and pomegranate juice. Juice meant in the best sense as this is 12 % alc and flows effortless across the tongue. No hurry to drink up here. 91 points

Sweet ripe berries, blackberry and strawberry, animal, mushroom, dark spices and sap. Very good concentration, sweet dark berry driven palate impression, good acidity, a hint of sweet tannins and medium long finish that ends with a strong animal note. It would be interesting to try this in ten years as there is plenty fruit to last. I read a few times that the 14 is purer vintage but this is quite ripe and concentrated for my palate.

Geek night with Alex and Tim et al. (The Presidio, SF): blind - Tim’s second wine) Medium ruby. On the nose, this is a beautiful, correct beaujolais. Savory and slightly buttery red cherry - slightly carbonic/confected. A bit of heft to the palate but not tannic. There’s medium weight and extraction, and a bit of development. Very nice! Totally callable as Beaujolais. Definitely a heftier cru - Morgon, Moulin-a-Vent.

ALTRA BORGOGNA; 1/16/2016-6/6/2016: Vigne di 70 anni. 21 giorni macerazione.

From a very good vintage this is a more elegant and transparent style of Morgon than usually the case at Lapierre. Think Fourrier rather than Chevillon. Light transparent colour with a minerally fruit dominated palate lacking some of the dual meatiness seen in Morgan. Still quite simple in structure and needs a year at least to relax and probably gather some more depth.

Striking ruby fruit with some initial macerated funkiness on the nose. Notes of pomegranate and cherry are contrasted by a citrus twist on the backside and a dusty earthiness. The entry leads me to brace for a sharp, acidic middle, but this drops down to reveal a clean, crystalline backside and some leafy herbal top-notes. Very elegant and delicate. One could argue that the backside is lacking but I find its style somewhat distinguishing.
Very Good - actually drinking pretty well now.

Old Man Rickling’s Birthday/2014 Cru Beaujolais Blind Tasting: Amazingly, this opened with more notes of ripe, almost stewed, fruit than any other wine on the night, including the Cuvée Marcel Lapierre. Now, it blew off and eventually tasted lighter than the Cuvée Lapierre. This initial impression may have been due to the fact that this bottle was not decanted, while some of the other bigger wines here were, but it was certainly surprising. Riper cherry than the Coudert, which gives a more purple fruit profile. Once the ripe/stewed notes blew off this showed light and lovely. Nice acid spine, some mineral notes, clean and less brooding than the 12s or 13s, but with good depth. Group’s #4.

Stephanie's Birthday (San Francisco): Smells sweet, slight buttery malo notes, slightly carbonic dark cherry, exuberant, with some freshly turned earth and wet leaves. On the palate, light, classic Beaujolais with a soft yet present dusting of tannins. It's tasty and nice to drink. 8.5-9

Decent but a bit underpowered and light with strawberry and red fruit. Of course that is kind of the angle of gamay so that's perhaps not a fair critique. Should have saved for a better pairing. One thing for sure is one nose I can pick out blind is a Beaujolais. It's just unique and utterly its own.

This has deepened in color and body over the couple of months since it's landed. Blacker fruit, not quite as friendly or delicate. Excellent, but now I might be inclined to give it some time rather than cracking all of the bottles early.

This is an excellent vintage for this wine. The nose was a bit reticent, the the palate was bright, lifted and energetic. Bright, tangy cherry and cranberry fruit, following through with a focused, chalk dusted finish. Light and airy, but there is deceptive sap under the razor sharp acids. I will need to age some of this.

Not the best vintage of this, but nonetheless meritorious. Pretty red berry fruits balanced by good acidity and a dollop of minerals. The next day it was somehow darker and deeper with a bit of funk, less pretty but enjoyable in a different way.

A glass in a wine bar, briefly noted: Served very cold, it appeared to be smooth and light but with great clarity in its redfruited character. Very nice but neither profound nor substantial.
I opened this for Thanksgiving. After a 1 ½ hour decant, it had a typical gamay flavor. Very pretty, though not quite as good as the 09 that I had few years back. I wonder if I could have done better with the food pairing than Thanksgiving dinner ?

Lots of cherry from this 'S' bottle, but not so much of the spiciness I'm guessing it will show with some more age. Juicy and fresh. Charming. More to more liking than the '12 or '13.

Tight, compressed nose. There's good medium to medium plus freshness on the palate, though the red fruit profile is a little buried, flavores of earth and rhubarb carry this well, along with pleasant mineral effects. Light to medium in body, this is an elegant wine, with some bitter notes, better with food, and with at least some short to medium term aging potential.

More French Gamay, Beaujolais and Otherwise (SF Wine Trading Company): Again, the unsulfured version. Medium muddled red. Supple red fruit, soil, green herbs, and medium acidity. Light and lively in the mouth, lovely texture. I think this would have been even more impressive had it not been poured right behind the much larger scaled, more tannic Diochon.

Red cherry palate, mineral aromas. Mineral and granite palate, someone notes it's missing some concentration on the palate, but I don't mind. Still charming.

Beaujolais tasting (Ivy Bottle Shop, Sydney): From magnum. Cream, earthy, cherry, muted spice. On the palate it's juicy with fresh cherry, silky tannins…fruit doesn’t really carry though, it's all quite short leaving a yearning for a bit more length. Quaffer at best.

This is typical for what I look for from Lapierre...light body, medium+ acidity, med- tannin, and a silky mouthfeel that I've come to look for in the youth of these wines. Outstanding example of what to expect from quality Morgon. Buy with confidence.

Not an exceptional Beaujolais as often reputed but still squarely in my Bojo wheelhouse. Bright crunchy red fruit and minerality. I liked this a lot but it comes with about a $5 premium because its from the legendary producer, Lapierre. I've got other producers I love just a bit more, for less.

Terrific, definitely the best since '09. Ready to enjoy right from the pop of the cork. No spritz! and already in harmony. Lively and juicy, of course, but the fruit is in a black pitch - black cherry, blackberry, black raspberry - and the tannins are almost surprisingly refined. Nevertheless, a divine match with Shake Shack burgers.

Juicy, sweet red fruit, almost like a jolly rancher candy. Minimal extract, light silky texture, not much structure. Ok but surprisingly light and one-note, I would have preferred a little more complexity and grip.

Raspberry, cranberry and strawberry dominate this very tasty Morgon with some mineral action and florals adding interest. While far from complex this is highly gluggable and a great vintage. Better on day two.

Decanted one hour and consumed over next three. Reticent nose, nothing at first, gradually opened to a some herbs and light fruit notes. Palate is bright with acidity and nice cherry notes.Works great with food. Good but a bit bland on its own. Excellent balance and clean finish, so I am hoping some age will add some more interest, and I believe it will given the balance, components and track record.

The nose was closed out of the bottle but opened up quickly with some air. Bright red cherry notes, with a dusty Asian spice notes. Good tart attack of red fruit, but the mid-palate is reminiscent of cherry cola, with a subtle component of dark fruit. This will integrate over the next few years.

Day 3. The nose has lost some, but the palate has gained a fair amount. The nose is very light and clear - red fruits - strawberry and cherry, roses, minerals and spices a bit of pine. When opened, some whiffs had intoxicating red fruits - crunchy and bright ... now things have calmed. The palate was light but tight, and has now opened some - still a lot of acid, and somewhat wound, but you can see what is going on - so light and pure: bright red fruit, also creamy - strawberry and cherry again, also minerals/stones and spices. This is just so silky and light. Tartness comes out towards the end, and it's tart red fruits with some florals and a bit of citric juiciness. This isn't showing as well or as much of its hand as the Roilette. My guess is that the Coudert is a shade or two better, but this is very good. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5+/6, Je ne Sais quoi - 1/2 = 15.5+/20 (with 16/20 potential).

Light red. Exhilarating floral aromatics-like a stroll through a rose garden. Light and wispy but incredibly flavorful red fruits, cranberry, and herb. Balanced, great early appeal, and one of the most delicate vintages of Lapierre I've had.

Still young, but this is a very promising showing from Lapierre. The nose is nice and open from the get go, with lovely floral and herbal aromas. It's got plenty of warm, juicy red fruits on the palate and the signature, iron-inflected mineral twang on the finish. By far the strongest Lapierre since 2011, and another positive sign for the 2014 vintage in Beaujolais.

2013 was the first vintage of Lapierre's Morgon I came across and, although I wasn't crazy about it at first, it came around and blew me away with its intense purity of fruit. The young 2014 reminds me very much of the first 2013 I had about 6 months ago with this powerful purity and this suggests to me that this will be as good if not better with time. Awesome.

Coravin Tasting Experiment and Lunch (Morton's Steakhouse - chicago IL): Forward black fruit with a cherry cola sweetness to start but lots of black cherry right behind on both nose and palate. Still lots of baby fat, but with structural support to offset and balance. Clearly cellarworthy. First taste of a multi year, multi wine Coravin experiment.

Youthful nose with medium intense aromas of young red fruit, intensely primary, almost in a Beaujolais Noveau kind of way. A light spiciness as well as some yeastyness. A bit simple, but fun.
Much more impressed by the palate. Medium+ acidity, nicely balanced fruityness, very juicy, round (no tannins) and quaff-able. Light bodied. Medium intensity and a medium+ finish.
Nose 85P, Palate 92P.
Will keep my second bottle for a year just to see if there is any complexity to gain on the nose. This will drinks very well right now though.

Very primary, youthful nose with a medium aroma intensity. Truckloads of fresh red berries, some yeast, fresh herbs and a hint of stable.
The wine is dry with a medium(+) acidity, light body and low tannins. The flavor intensity is medium with primary flavors of red berries, wet stones, spice and fresh herbs. The finish is medium.
Looking at my TN this wine seems pretty simple and one-dimensional, and yeah, that's exactly what it is. But this is so juicy and refreshing! It just makes me smile. No that far from a Beaujolais Nouveau but with less artificial aromas. The perfect wine to drink in a hot summer day.

Pretty nose of fresh berries and sweet earth. Quite firm and juicy on the palate with crisp acidity along with plenty of tangy raspberry and cherry fruit. The finish is grippy and a bit closed at this point but it shows a nice cut of chalky minerals which I always like in the best BJ. 89+

Fantastic nose, floral and light yet also full of black fruits. A little savoury and earthy on the entry, becoming fruitier on the middle. Great depth and really pure flavours with a great crispness to the finish. Excellent.

Oeil rubis limpide;

Light red fruits. Some carbonic notes and spice. Medium high acid. A good light food wine (chicken, pork). Really quite pleasant, even on its own.

Group’s #4.

Awesome.

Clear, pale intensity, ruby color.
