Deep color for a Pinot Noir. Plum and oak aromatics. Soft up front fruit flavor. Ok varietal definition but fruit driven. Dark fruit taste. Soft mature character. Good finish. Not likely to improve, drink up.

Ruby red in color. 14.4% ABV. Pretty nose of red fruits, cloves and forest floor. Medium body with perfect acidity. At 9 years of age there is less upfront fruit than when I last tried this but the wine is still incredibly appealing. Cherry, cranberry, baking spices and earth on the palate. The finish is long and supple. Gorgeous Pinot Noir that is aging gracefully. Best over the next 1-2 years.

Pnp at restaurant. Very elegant Pinot. Bright strawberry with a little red cherry on the nose, classic RRV characteristics. The strawberry and cherry continue to palate with a little cola maybe. Very round and silky feel. Nice long smooth finish. Really good wine. A little over priced IMO, but really enjoyable. Thumbs up from the table.

Popped and poured from 375, only had one glass which was knocked over by an over exuberant dog tail before I could finish. On the nose get a lot of vanilla and spice, flavors are similar with only a bit of red fruit buried underneath. Overall was a bit oaky and didn’t show much fruit , maybe I drank it too young? Mild tannins, low acid, moderate finish, overall a little disappointing but perhaps I didn’t give it enough time. Was served a bit cold as well and not in proper glasses so may have not given it a fair shot.

Pop and poured. Reliable producer-- nose of cherries, red fruit, dirt/earth. Nice full bodied pinot-- mature red fruits, little tart, longer finish. This is not your ordinary red fruit pinot-- it has a lot more depth, flavor, and finish.

Medium dark red. Pretty nose of raspberry tart, vanilla and spice. The fruit has tamed down, tart red raspberry, cherry, strawberry , nice expression of Russian River valley Pinot. In spite of the original professional tasting note it is going strong and drinking very well and not old.

Don’t know why it’s not popular anymore with the wine snobs. Maybe because it’s too expensive and not a good QPR? I found this bottle to be quite enjoyable. Lots of cherry flavor with some spice. Long finish.

Deep red, hints of purple. Starts and stays over extracted. Ripe cherry, almost macerated, spice, touch of heat. Hoping this will mellow with more time but not optimistic.

Basically PnP. Left it about 10 minutes for the tartness to blow off. Cherry fruit and some strawberry notes. Not a lot of complexity: went from fruit to finish pretty quickly. But the cherry did hang on throughout most of the finish, and wrapped up with a pleasant bit of leather.
4/15/2024 Seems like the strawberry was more prevalent this time. Plenty of cherry, too. But not much finish. Nice, but one note wine.

Decanted for 1.5 hours. Aromas of cherry, strawberry, sassafras and a touch of earth. Flavors of cherry, strawberry, loganberry, radish and touch of cranberry. Ends with a long finish of 30+ seconds with a pure cherry notes. Still tasting incredibly young at 8 years old. Testament to proper wine storage.

Returning to the RR I thought it a good bottle to bring along for the trip. Perhaps a little bottle shocked I thought the bottle was still good but not great like the bottle from 2 years ago so docked a few points. It has a medium minus extracted clear garnet color. Nose still showing the spices from the oak with a little forest underfloor around the cherry notes. the nose is expressive. The body showed medium tannins with good balance but the fruit is more subdued. Good finish. I had hoped for more secondary notes. And curious if that will happen before the fruit fades.

Pale ruby, pronounced tears. Dried cherries and subtle red fruits, cedar box, white pepper. Medium acidity. Slightly grainy tannin at first but mellowed out and integrated well over the course of two hours after opening. 30 sec finish. Drinking really well right now.

This wine had a wonderful structure of strawberry, vanilla on the nose and on the pallet right out of the bottle. Very pleasant and approachable for such a high alcohol rating. It seemed to go a little flat as time moved on. Still drinking well and I would drink now. The body is medium/full. The wine has smooth texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity.

Opened and let air in bottle for about 45 mins. I agree with a previous poster who mentioned how different this Russian River pinot was to most. It is a lot bigger with more tannin that expected upfront. Fruit was still there but not the typical strawberry you get from RRV pinots. Also agree that it may near end of life. Still good though. I have another bottle of this 2013 that I may open soon for comparison.

Pop, pour, decant. Aromas of cherry, sarsaparilla, brown sugar and raspberry. Flavors of cherry compote, touch of cranberry, cinnamon and currant. Ends with a long finish of 30+ seconds with a very pure cherry note. You can see the past brilliance in this before the style changeover.

This was a bottle I tasted via Coravin in July 2017 and stashed it back in the cellar. Well last night we had guests for dinner and I pulled this and the 2014, which I served first. The 2013 tasted very much the same as the '14 and proved an "experiment" that the Coravin keeps the wine pretty fresh after almost 2 years.

Delicious. Nicely rounded ripe CA pinot showing lots of ripe red cherry with some darker notes. Not overly complex on the nose, but nicely balanced on the palate with soft tannins and still juicy acidity. Would say however, that this should be drunk sooner than later.

Opened while watching a movie so our notes were not as precise as some others. But neither myself nor my wife found it sweet or jammy as what others described. While the mouthfeel was sort of the velvety texture mentioned in other notes, we found it to be somewhat lacking both depth of fruit and structure. The nose still had the intensity of cherry and spice yet the initial flavors were tart and less balanced. Eventually it moved more towards the red fruits but took some time to sort itself out. We both agreed this vintage has seen better days. In fact, we already plan to drink what we have left over the next few months.

This has to be right in the sweet spot. A beautiful fruit forward nose with cherries and leather with a hint of creme brulee and nutmeg. On the palate the tannins are soft and silky in perfect balance with the acids. cherry pie, frozen daiquiri, and strawberry jam come to mind. This is just wonderful. A perfect balance between an over extracted and wimpy pinot with just the right amount of punch. Love it.

Crimson in color. 14.4% ABV. Stunning nose of red fruits, cloves, cinnamon and forest floor. Light to medium body with medium acidity. Sweet, silky and fruit forward. Black cherry, anise, cranberry and earth on the palate. Exceptional length on the finish. If you are a believer that the appellation wines give you a peak into the potential of the single vineyard wines then this bodes well for those with the SVD's still in your cellar. Best over the next 2-3 years.

Another disappointing KB. I am glad I chose to drop them from my allocations as they just don't click for me. I have a few bottles of 2013 left so maybe one of these will show better. I just think they are overdone and too one note. I drink the thing just thinking its too much the whole time which is part of the problem as I almost look for it now. Wife was in agreement though that the 12 Sea Smoke Southing we drank befor this was way better. I think it's a much better example of a crowd pleasing style done properly.

Second bottle - first opened Nov2016 might have been flawed. Nothing wrong with this - lovely. Nicely smoothed out, would not think it's good for more than 1-2 more years. WS put window ending in 2020 - seems right.
Has lost the over-extracted sweetness you get from some of the KB which is nice. Drink it now - very enjoyable. No decant or very short decant.

Still youthful and can benefit from a few more years in bottle. Loads of primary fruit up front and a bold fruit forward finish. This is a big wine that can stand up even to a strip or ribeye steak. A bit of Ludens caugh drop on the finish. No 1er Cru Burg., but big in its own right coming from RRV.

I believe this wine is about expectations. If you go in expecting transcendence you will likely be disappointed, but we went in somewhat differently. We are "likers" of Kosta-Browne and have several bottles, but don't often drink them given its hard to justify the expense as we gravitate more to big reds. That said, we had a pork tenderloin with cherry reduction on Christmas day and thought this was the right choice. Boy were we pleased.
The wine was amazingly smooth. Alcohol, tannins, and acid were well integrated. Cherry dominated with perhaps almond and balsamic. Really a nice glass of wine that holds up not as a massive point scorer but as just an extremely well made and so drinkable.

It's been a year since I last had this wine. PnP and consumed over two+ hours. Still in that 91-92/93 point realm for me. It kicked out some nice notes of raspberry, strawberry, cola, and hints of earth. Medium-ish bodied with a bit of a boozy bite on the back end, clipping the fruit from actually enveloping the palate the way I'd like.
So, in the end, it was good; it was fine; it was a passersby type of wine...a "nothing to see here, please keep moving," kind of wine...a glance at a pretty girl in the grocery store...nothing more. The affective reactions of "compelling," "amazing," and "memorable," unfortunately still don't live here. In reality, you could've named any local producer and I would've believed they made this Pinot. Pretty run-of-the-mill with just a tick of fleeting interest and a whisper of personality.
I'd hold until 2019 in hopes that bite on the finish tapers off and maybe the flavors mature. However, I'll be crossing my fingers the fruit and the drive don't taper off too much over the coming year in-bottle. 91-92+? points if I'm being "objective."
Still young. Needs time to open up. Strawberries and sauteed mushrooms on the nose. Fresh bright red fruit on palate. Medium bodied. Good lengthy finish. Still a bit tight though. Drink 2018-2023.

I did (2) 3 ounce Coravin pours for Paula and I to contrast with a 2013 Cirq Treehouse (from Michael Browne) and stylistically they were very close with the Cirq (at twice the price) having more depth, longer finish and better balance. I rated that a couple of point higher and the Cirq reminded me of early vintage KB wines like the '03 and '05

Deep garnet to the edge. Strawberries/raspberries on the nose with just a hint of spice. Cellar decant for 90 minutes then consumed over several hours. Rich, luscious mouthfeel. A touch of heat/alcohol on first taste that blew off quickly. Soft tannins extend to a medium juicy finish. I rate this higher than others probably owing to my passion for richness. Next time will go for several hours on the decant. This still has room to evolve, so will hold next bottle another 12 - 18 months.

A nice pinot...my first from Kosta Browne. We also drank a 2012 KB RRV, but liked the 2013 better. Bigger fruit. Nice tannins. Long finish. Complemented our traditional Pizza Rustica very well. I have one left and will wait until next Easter to see if I notice a difference.

Decanted for three hours then tasted over two days. I was a fan of this producer until the 2012 RR release which I found to be highly pedestrian. I was hoping this vintage would restore my appreciation, but it has simply confirmed that it is time to look elsewhere. Dark and somewhat brooding, there is a slothful feel and a simple profile here where once there was ebullience.

Predictably Kosta Browne... candied red cherry fruit, fruit forward, creamy texture, unctuous vanillin finish. Simple and crowd pleasing for an American palate. This was the replacement bottle for the one that was corked back in November. This one definitely not corked. Nothing resembling Burgundy, but if you are in the mood for a full throttle Pinot, then this wine is for you. Having tasted Kosta Pinots since 2007, I have found 3-4 years of bottle age serve these wines well. Time allows the fruit and alcohol to integrate and begin to mellow out a bit.

I've stopped buying these wines for the simple reason that if I want to drink over ripe CA Pinot Noir that doesn't have any subtlety or finesse, I'll buy a bottle of Meiomi for $20.
Alcoholic nose smells of prunes, but is vaguely reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Surprisingly, not dominated by oak. On the palate, the wine is unctuous and heavy, with the dominant flavor being cherry cola. It's clearly well made (i.e. no faults), it's just not what I look for in PN.
Beautiful appellation effort from Kosta Browne surpassing most producers single vineyard efforts. Beautiful and pure fruit with red and black flavors delivered in a smooth and seamless manner. A bit of evident spice but the fruit is certainly showcased here. Fresh and clear this could lay down a long time.

91 Nice red color. Fast legs. Some candied fruit on the nose. Light and effervescent mouth feel that became much smoother over several hours. Tart cranberries up front, then dark fruit on the palate with a slight peppery finish.

Similar to the other appellation 2013 KB Pinots with hard red candied fruit, cola, red raspberry, earth, and spicebox flavors. Much more solid and approachable than expected, with just a bit of heat on the back end.
Probably best left alone for another year, but still kicking out fruit and intensity that are noteworthy at least in terms of maintaining their verve over the course of two-three hours. Nothing earth-shattering, but a decent Pinot nonetheless. QPR is somewhat questionable, especially on the secondary market.
Not enough to keep me loyal to KB's allocation list, but enough of a decent showing to keep me from getting pissed off about what this producer has actually become (not great). Not a real exciting Pinot, but still was a good soldier throughout the dinner.
91-93 points, with a chance to lock in a 93 in a year or so (actually probably wishful thinking). Gone are the days where KB wines will ever become truly epic in my opinion. Hold this one for another year to see if it can develop into a young adult and an actual contributing member of the wine society.

Tart sour cherry, raspberry and hints of cherry highlight this Pinot noir. Absolutely need to decant for an hour to have those tight tannins smooth out and become the terrific Pinot noir gem we call Kosta Browne.

Not usually my favorite of the KB appellation bottlings but this was singing last night, and much better than the bottle we drank a year ago. Rich cherry with a very nice cedary oak component, a hint of cola, and some cooking herb flavors. It was hard not to gulp it down.

PnP - Young wine that's concentrated and probably needs more time to resolve. I recommend waiting 2 more years.
The nose is quite nice with significant amounts of black cherry, raspberry, cola, white floral notes and some baking spice on the backend. The palate leans to the ripe side with similar notes as the nose, however not quite as complex. There's a certain flatness that I suspect is due to age. The wine does holds good acidity at the mid palate and has a decent finish.
The nose far exceeds the palate on this wine. Had it not been for nicely complex and distinguishable bouquet I would have scored this around a 88/89.

This is a classic RRV Pinot; lovely cherry, cola, raspberry, baking spice, and some floral notes. The palate is definitely ripe, but maintains some balance with solid acidity. A bit riper than I personally enjoy my Pinot, but still actually a very solid wine and one of the better RRV pinots I've had in the last year or so.

Always a crowd pleaser. Had on offer for those who didn't like the French Burgundy. This has great fruit. and a real sense of RRV on the nose. I prefer and enjoy this bottling much more than the Sonoma Coast type.

Kosta Browne with Michael Browne (Acanto): quite a bit riper more decadent fruit to the nose. more polished fruit aromas. more liquered fruits. has some plum to the nose. fruit starts beyond cherry. shows more ABV than the Sonoma Coast 2013. Works as an exponent to the spice on the finish. The extra fruit really gobbles up the oak and in turn, it doesn't show quite as much. still comes across as oak as brown sugar to the palate, but not as up front as in the Sonoma Coast 2013.

I tend to like these better when they're the only wine we're drinking than when they are compared against others. This time we had it as part of a broad Pinot tasting and compared to the other wines with the stronger acidity and a bit more balance this just felt overdone.

This seemed big and concentrated to me even for kosta Browne - perhaps because it is young. Rich cherry flavor mixes with some cola and soft oak on the mid palate. Tastes good but it could use some time to mellow out.

Dense ruby to garnet hue with ruby to the rim and almost opaque. The smells are strawberry, flowers, cola, and wet stone. The tastes are cherry, cola, strawberry, and red licorice, with some sweet spice. The finish is lengthy with a mix of fruit and spice and tannins that are satin.

At the pickup event last weekend, once again the RRV was drinking the best at this young age. Brighter and lighter on its feet than the SLH, and rounder and more open than the SC. Putting mine away for a few years

Tasted at the KB pickup party. Light to medium weight in body. Showing more oak than the SC; tight and closed right now with dark cherry and berry notes in the background. Needs time to evolve. Recommend late 2016 early 2017 before opening a bottle. Good.

Right off the truck from today with a pop and pour. Tough to assess the wine being fresh from shipment and young but still a fine wine. Visually it is somewhat dark and looks concentrated. On the nose I get some mint, petrol, spice and some pine. Palate wise I am getting some more confirmed spice, dried leathery cranberries, and subtle hints of whats to come of some dark fruits and raspberry maybe even an earthy note. Much more restrained than vintages from a few years ago. No overt oak tones or cola flavor which is a good thing IMO. Gonna hold my others for a few years to let it develop. Has the potential to gaina few points with some time

Red fruit, cherries, spice. Somewhat rich with a touch of tart.
This hasnt evolved much since my last bottle consumed in 2019.

Love it.

Drank over a 2 hour period without decanting. Plenty of fruit, alcohol was prevalent if not slightly overshadowing. Give it another 2 -3 years.

Decanted over 1 hour. Side by side with a 13 Gaps Crown. Lot’s of heat and alcohol. Big fruit and flavor but took a long time to settle down. Hold for a few more years and give it a long decant. A very nice KB wine.

Enjoyed this flavorful wine a lot. My only caution is that out of the bottle, the wine definitely needed about 30-60 minutes of air time to fully develop.
