Another good bottle of CdR from Guigal, but I am coming to see this vintage as my least favorite of the past few years. The 2012 was exceptionally good, and is still drinking beautifully in 2020. This 2013 hits most of the right notes, but is still a bit tight and herbal despite its seven years of age.

2003, 3.2 rating. A medium red color with a friendly flower nose with a medium, complex body and a moderately long aftertaste. A bargain price for the money. Just let it sit in a cool cellar for a few years, which this wine has. A bargain for the price.
Popped & poured, this was immediately pleasing, with dark fruit and red fruit aromas, earth and a gentle spiciness. Its flavor profile is bigger and more impressive than its fragrances, with a firm acid backbone, a medium+ body and a deep savoriness; long and savory finish with minerals and beetroot. Just entering its peak drinking window, this wine has many good years ahead of it despite its modest price. Outstanding QPR.

Ruby purple. Cherries, blackberries, leather. Smooth tannin and enough acidity to provide freshness on the palate. Quite light for this cuvee, it is clearly inferior to the 2012 C-d-R Reserve prestige from the same producer and even less concentrated than the examples of this cuvee from less challenging vintages as 2010 for example. Nevertheless it is a charming wine with enough personality to provide pleasure. 5/11/15/7

N: RIPE plums, earth, poss garrigue; Iron with addt'l air;
P: Med body; NICE, almost swtish frt braced by an acidic astringency with very, VERY fine tannins, all of this morphing into a LONG, spicy finish with those very, VERY fine tannins, yet with a certain swtness amongst the firmness. Approachable now with food, it would benefit by a brief decant OR aging through the Summer of '18, then drinking into if not through '20. 89 pts WE @ $19, 88 ea WS & Suckling, 87 WA, and Jancis Robinson 16+ (cask) & 15.5/20 (Hemming). This was balanced and technically decent, but I had expected it to be more fruity and richer in aromas and flavors. Is the wine becoming old, or was this just a slightly off bottle?

The nose is clean with a medium intensity. There are well-defined aromas of black fruit (cooked blackberry), red fruit (strawberry), oak (subtle wood), and pungent spice (white pepper). The wine is youthful.
On the palate, the wine is dry with medium(+) acidity, medium(+) alcohol and medium body. The medium(-) level tannins are ripe and dusty in nature. The flavours have a medium intensity and show notes of red fruits (raspberry, cooked red plum), pungent spice (white pepper), and oak (very subtle wood). The finish has a medium length.
This is a good quality wine. The flavours are concentrated and have a great balance with the acidity and the alcohol. The dusty tannins fade, with the acidity taking over for a refreshing finish. The subtle oak treatment does not interfere with the primary fruit. In its current state, the wine shows primary and secondary characteristics. The wine has a finish with good length.
The wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing. While the tannin structure is starting to fade, the acidity level will help support the fruit intensity as tertiary notes develop.

Trying this Rhone blend (50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre.) again after 3 months; this time I was able to give it 60m of air before drinking.
Medium Purple/Ruby color. Clean, intense aromas of Plum, blackberry, olives and nutmeg. Combination of dark and red fruit with a hint of vanilla on the palette.
Nice balance between the tart acid & structured tannins. Medium/full-bodied, with a medium+ finish. Fairly simple, but great QPR for anyone looking for a classic CdR.

Quite fragrant in the nose, with apples, cherries, honey, and mints; rather juicy and smooth on the palate though a bit thin, with berries, cherries, and wood spices; medium-long finish; overall, 88-89 points; recommended at this price point.

A little on the hot side, there is lush spiced cherry and plum fruit with tingles of garrigue. This really builds from some well defined fruit to something a tad overwhelming at the end, with an alcoholic heat ruining it for me. Delivers on flavour, but not on balance. Perfectly good for midweek stews.

Ruby. This vintage of cotes du rhone from Guigal is quite smooth with atypical low levels, at least sensory, of tannin and has the typical complex and intense and long lasting fruit. On day two it developed additional strawberry aromatics. The 89-91 points from the Wine Advocate are well deserved.

Nothing bad about it other than there’s nothing actually good about it - watered down flavors of berry overwhelmed by gritty tannins - 1 hour decant later there’s a sour cherry note that rounds it out a bit but just a very very weak wine
Update - really went up a notch after about 2 hours - nice nose of chocolate and spices so the one has developed but still maintains a harsh acidity and unwelcome tannic grip

Lovely wine, especially at the price. Allowed to breathe for 30m, could have used more, I think. Dark fruit and earthy notes (olives?) on the nose. Decent body, but perhaps a bit more tannic than would be desired. Great drinking CdR.

I am marking this, as I do with all my wines, not in isolation but partly in the context of my experiences with wines of a similar type and/or from the same region.. hence my 88 because in the context of Cotes du Rhine, this is a very solid and attractive wine. A nice not too complex partner for sirloin steak

Solid southern rhone wine. Some schitzophrenic tannins that can't decide how forward they want to be make this wine a bit flabby, but overall the taste profile was good, finish was smooth, and overall very balanced. At the price it is a real bargain.

I would agree with jonahfactor last comments. Reading that I decided to decant with Venturi and poured through it again into glass. Think that helped it soften over the next 90 min. Had the 12' & liked so bought the 13'. It has nice typical dark red fruits bit of cola and a little tannic. Enjoyable enough for QPR for a weeknight CdR. Wished I'd gotten couple more 12's when they were on sale though.

A blend of 50% Syrah, 45% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre, partially aged in foudres for 18 months, 14% ABV, two million bottles produced (only; 2012 yielded 3.5 million bottles). In the Rhône, 2013 is (generally speaking) a fresher and more mineral vintage than the riper and more fruit-forward 2012, and this wine reflects this in a relatively austere finish with notes of liquorice root, and the fruit of peach and cherry is accompanied by some cranberry. There is less of the pepperiness of a ripe Syrah and the the phenols are slightly on the dry side, but it does have the energy to carry its alcoholic weight well. I don't think that further ageing will really improve it - my guess is that this is ready to drink, even if it will keep and soften for another five years. Holds up well (and actually improves) over two days in the open bottle at cellar temperature, so there clearly is no hurry.

This one is a curiosity. Tight and tannic out of the bottle, it opens up after an hour in the glass. More generous then, but still remains hot throughout. Medium bodied and very tannic. Big black fruits. Liked the '12. Not sure where this will go, even as a weeknight offering. Therefore .... (= Pass)

Typical of the region showing brambly dark fruit, some pepper and a hint of liquorice. Later on it opened up somewhat adding some plum and a little cherry. Medium/full bodied and quite structured but not giving the follow through and development of fruit and aromatics which I expected from the nose. Fair acidity and good structure with a dab of chocolate towards the finish. Sound and robust but a bit simplistic and lacking in charm and moreishness; one-third of the bottle left. It will be interesting to see if it opens up tomorrow. There are better values to be had for €8.99 in the Rhône valley and elsewhere but, if stuck with nothing else on hand, I might stretch out for it again for, say, a barbecue.
Re-tasted on 3/30/2017, the wine is better integrated and more expressive after 48 hours under VacuVin in the fridge. With hindsight it looks as if decanting would have been beneficial. But I still think that there are better CDRs and CDRVs around for the same price or less.

Bought & opened for the Wine Pages Palate Calibration Exercise has closed. http://wine-pages.com/features/palate-calibration-exercise-2017/
I was expecting lots of forward sweet black fruit, but there’s none of that. Initially it felt a little muted on the nose, then it just seems rather lean and leafy. What fruit there is feels a bit confected, floral & sweet-shoppy. Being positive, it has great restraint. Good black fruit on the attack with something of a leathery, velvet mouthfeel. Very hefty tannins that suck the moisture out of your cheeks. After about 20 minutes open (but not decanted) and in the glass, some of that aggression has faded. Black fruits, with a sort of blueberry freshness and acidity in the mouth. There’s an almost concerning amount of acidity in here, I think. Finishes with that leanness that was on the nose. Could there have been a tiny bit of TCA in this? There’s a greenness and a bit of a feel of it being scalped. But no. It’s one of those cases where greenness is just greenness. There’s none of the meaty, fleshiness I’d expect in CdR. I wouldn’t say my opinion changed with food, but a large slab of Dexter rump steak with peas and artichokes braised together in veal stock really did it a world of good, bringing the fruit to the fore and taming both the acidity and the tannins, as the meat’s fat lined the mouth. But not removing/masking them entirely, especially the acidity.

Warm aromas of plums, strawberries. Ripe and lush dark fruits on the palate. A hints of earth and herbs also in the mix. Weakish acidity, but solid tannins. Alcohol comes through a bit in the finish, but with decanting it became a bit more balanced. Good strawberries in the somewhat short aftertaste. This wine caught me a bit of guard, surprisingly serious effort for a basic CdR. (I tasted this again in 2017, and this has improved a bit, still has surprisingly strong structure, but wine has become a bit more together. Longish very mineral aftertaste. Now 89, almost 90)

WSET Level 2 - Day 2 (Pialligo Estate, Canberra, ACT, Australia): The appearance is clear and medium ruby in colour. Tears are visible.
