  • This is still quite young and a bit harsh upon opening, so plenty of air needed. Even better, a several more years in the cellar. The tannins dominate the palate at present, but it has a very good structure, nice acidity and floral notes. Very good potential.

  • I always seem to underestimate how much air Nebbiolo needs at this age. 3hrs was not enough, probably should've done 8. By day 2 this had such beautiful nose of raspberry, roses, soya, green tea, and pipe tobacco. Palate was silky but still pretty grippy and firm. Shame I only have one 2011, this has much further to develop.

  • Rose petals, licorice and camphor on the nose. Tart cherries on the palate, good grip, a long finish. Powerful and balanced. Excellent with smoked ribeye roast.

  • Medelmörk tegel/ rubin. Halvfeta gardiner (14,5 procent).
Ganska hög syra, mycket märkbara men välpolerade tanniner.

  • Decanted and drank at an Italian restaurant. Evolved beautifully over the course of 90 minutes. The wine was in balance and wonderful with food.

  • Beautiful wine. Decanted for 2 + hrs. Flavors are rich and fruity with some cherry overtones. The wine is smooth and continues that way over a two hour drink.

  • Same as last note except two hours in decanter rather then three. “Full but balanced. Cherry, balsamic, earthy and softly integrated tannins.” Superb. Remnants still excellent on night two.

  • Two 2011 Barbarescos drunk together at home: Drunk over three nights with the Sottimano from Zalto Denk'Art Burgundy glass. Drinking at its best - and its most savoury and secondary - on the third evening. The colour a touch more garnet than the younger, darker ruby looking Currá. On the first night a bright, lifted, largely black fruited aromas: blackberries, black cherries and black plums. Dark chocolate, balsamico and tar and faint red rose perfumes. On the second and third evenings, especially, more truffle, earth and creosote, and less vibrant berry and cherry fruit. More polished and open on the palate than the Sottimano. Depth and concentration. Lovely balance between rich, voluptuous, primary fruit and savoury nuance, with, as noted, the latter accentuated on the third evening. Flavour complexity, with notes matching the bouquet. It may improve with further cellaring, but, as a 2011, I don't expect it to be ultra-long lived. I'd drink over this decade. My favourite of the 2011 Produttori Riservas.

  • Quite enjoyable but not as good as previous bottles

  • Delicious! Totally lived up to its promise. The lesson is: decant for over 3 hours and it will blow you away. Consume with food obviously.

  • Decanted for 60 mins, drank over next 2 hrs. Still improving at end of that window

Finkorniga men tydliga tanniner. Hallon, viol och tjära. Robust.

  • 2016 Produttori del Barbaresco Crus Plus a Few Older Produttori Wines (San Francisco): Ruby. High toned, heady aroma, partly due to VA. Ripe, lush with a bit of green, but overall the most overtly sweet wine we tasted today. Good late citric lift though. I marked it down for some alcoholic heat and less complexity than many of the other wines, but it was a big hit with other tasters today.

  • Three hours in a decanter before tasting. Delicious and more open than I expected after reading other’s notes. Full but balanced. Cherry, balsamic, earthy and softly integrated tannins. Good on its own and with this evening’s Pasta Bolognese.

  • Great wine. Needs lots of time to breathe. Flavors come out after 2 hours. Probably gets even better....

  • Still young but improving. Firm structure, I get brick and citrus. No rush here.

  • Nope it did not peak. Still very good. Coravined a glass. Big fruit, and nice finish.

  • Early days yet for this regal cru. It’s still showing notable tannin, a warning to all who approach without sufficient respect. There’s notable, but subtle fruit, accented by herbal and leathery tones. It’s really a bit of a tease at this point, showing complexity, but baring it’s claws. Approach carefully, or at least with an appropriate food offering, such that the beast might accept your advances.

  • From magnum. Very good but very primary. Slow- oxed this 8 hours before dinner.

  • Very good barbaresco. Lots of fruit flavors, but unlike the previous bottles 18 months ago, this had quite a bit of alcohol on the open. Decanted for 2 hr, and it improved. I am wondering if it had peaked.

  • Elegant and aromatic nose with ripe cherries, tobacco, leather and some rose petals. A slight whiff of red currant and a hint of high alcohol, but nothing disturbing (alc. 14,5 %). Slightly balsamic touch as well. Young, but inviting appearance on the nose.

Really enjoyable palate that shows classic Barbaresco charachteristics. Drinking very well at this early stage and more open that some previous vintages I have tried (e.g. 2007). Lovely fruit with Good concentration and medium tannin that give some support, but without being overpowering. As always, nicely balanced acidity and good length. Not that expressive yet, pretty sure another 3-5 years will do this good and then drink the next 10.

92 points for now, but this will certainly add another 1-2 points if it develops in the right direction.

  • Really enjoyable, soft ripe resolved tannins, great juicy fruit with lovely Barolo like charm, quite fresh and well balanced, not oppulent but reasonably plush. Preferably not too warm, ideally 16-18 degrees C to concentrate the dark fruit and bury some of the alcohol.

3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comment

  • Ripe cherries, raspberries, blackberries and lots of herbs like rosemary, thyme and marjoram on the palate. Medium+ bodied, moderate alcohol intensity. Silky tannins - not too strong, just perfect. Nice fresh acidity in the middle, makes the whole wine way lighter and more approachable. Good depth. Long juicy and herbal finish.
Still very young but already highly enjoyable. With 5-8 more years this will become even more interesting. Will easily age another 12-15 years.
About 20,000 bottles of this vintage were produced. Drank from magnum.

  • Initially quite soft and easy-going with evolved red cherry, a clear spice note and some leather. Grows over time and decidedly more tannic and structured on day two. Should be able to grow old bones after all.

  • Compared to my last tasting, the door has shut a few inches and the tannins are more pronounced. Still very enjoyable on an absolute level, to be fair. Nevertheless, I will try to exercise patience with my remaining bottles: should be a stellar wine 10 years down the road!

  • Comes off a bit subdued and underripe. Hopefully just in a closed phase...I only had one glass to be fair and wasn’t able to track it over the course of an evening.

  • - Medium forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium/full body. Polished texture with a medium finish - Really wonderful barbaresco. Full fruit and smooth. Deep crimson in color. A little heavier than the standard Produttori. Drink up.

  • Decanted for 1 hr. Very pretty ruby red. Firm and taunt, but elegant, with red fruits, broad floral scents, and a lingering drying finish. Cherry, menthol, along with a clove like sweetness. Next bottle in 2022.

  • Dark red color. Very balanced wine, rich and elegant. No hard edges. Blackberries and a bit of fresh mint. Drinks well but could do with a few more years in the cellar. Happy to have more in the cellar.

  • Quite fantastic. I had the 2009 vintage of this wine a month ago, and this was considerably more open, expressive, interesting, and ready to enjoy. Bigger and more fruit coming through, showing the warmer vintage it came from.

  • - It's balanced with a full body. Round texture with a long finish - O wow o wow. What a great wine. It is fruit filled with berries and dried fruit all lumped together. Did not decant, but coravined it. So it might just explode with a 1 hour decant.... I was expecting more of the light Prudottori Barberesco that I am used to. This baby was full bodied and ready to take on a steak....

  • A bottle drunk over two evenings. Like many 2011s drinking very well for this early in its life. My favourite of the 2011 Produttori Riservas. Compared with earlier bottles, drunk two or more years ago, unsurprisingly, this example seems more open. Dark red colour. An attractive bouquet of blackberries, black plums, dark cherries, mocha, tar and black soil with a touch of old English rose. In the mouth, real concentration, weight and power. Dark fruited with earth, espresso and creosote. Good freshness and acidity, considering the vintage. It hides its 14.5% alcohol well with no over-prominent heat or roasted character. Sleek tannins and a silky, but unctuous, mouthfeel. Some tannic grip on the finish. Of course, there is plenty of fruit and structure to resolve. Ideally, give it 3-5+ more years.

  • Produttori Del Barbaresco Masterclass, with Aldo Vacca (Handford Wines, London): Much bigger than the 2013 albeit its less soft and approachable now. Firm and with lots of presence but still with a softer, silkier if we may say edge.Nice ripe undertone but just needs a few more years to sing to its potential. Very promising wine.

  • Tasting. Brief note. Pnp. At first much more feminine and elegant than '11 Montestefano with tight red fruits, soft florals, wet forest floor, baking spice, tar and fennel pollen. This put on a ton of weight through the night even getting a touch hot a one point but remained fairly balanced on the palate. Needs plenty of time.

  • Similar nose to the Montestefano with red fruits and a bit of dustiness. Hot on the finish.

  • I bought several of the 2011 wines from this producer. This is the best one I've had so far. Nice bang for the buck. Still not my overall favorite profile, but a solid wine.

  • My favourite of the 2011 Produttori Riservas. Compared with earlier bottles, this example seems the most closed. Dark red colour. An attractive bouquet of blackberries, black plums, dark cherries, mocha, tar and black soil with a touch of old English rose. In the mouth, real concentration, weight and power. Dark fruited with earth, espresso and creosote, but showing more iron at its core than I remember in previous bottles. Reasonable freshness and acidity, considering the vintage. It hides its 14.5% alcohol well with no heat or roasted character that worried me. Sleek tannins and a silky, but unctuous, mouthfeel. Some tannic grip on the finish. Ideally, give it 3-5+ years.

  • Compared to Montestefano tonight. This won by a point. Was richer, darker and more elegant. Still a great backbone of acidity and minerality. Upside potential and clear why this vineyard is worthy of it's reputation.

  • Really structured wine with darker fruits and long finish. It will need a lot of time in the cellar to fully develop. Worth stashing this one away for 10+ years.

  • Another bottle of this excellent wine drunk over three evenings. Similar impressions to in my earlier notes. This is the star of the 2011 lineup. A dark fruited beauty, with touches of espresso, tar and dark soil. Approachable now but perhaps hints of shutting down? I'll see on the next bottle ... However, if you've only got a few bottles give them 5+ years.

  • Tasted over three days, alongside the same vintage Asili. Bouquet of red berries (fresh, in compote, stewed, and candied), fresh melon, hibiscus, spices, striking minerality, and wafting diesel notes, all less effusive than the Asili. Broader and more expansive than the Asili on the palate. In a barbershop quartet, this would be the baritone, with the Asili as tenor. (Based on previous vintages, the Montefico would be the bass.) Powerfully structured, with medium plus to high acid, and copious gritty tannins. Reminiscent of the 2011 Francesco Rinaldi e Figli Barolo Cannubi, with more red fruit and less tar.

This wine will likely enjoy are very long maturation curve, probably longer than the Asili. Also likely to reveal a beautiful bouquet in time. If hankering for world class Barbaresco over the next twelve to fifteen years, reach for the Asili first. 95-96...97?

  • Awesome potential that is coiled up and much tighter than the Asilli, but there is still pleasure to be had even at this incredibly early part of its life. Floral with fine grained tannin and a dry soil palate. Beautiful and regal.

  • A tremendous showing, and my favorite of the lineup (I haven't tasted the Rio Sordo yet). Tons of ripe dark cherries, plum, herbs, and red flowers on the nose and palate. The mouthfeel is silky with ripe tannin, impeccable balance, and a finish that, while long, isn't so epic that this heads into VH90s scoring. This is a testament to the producer, vineyard, and overall strength of the 2011 vintage in Barbaresco. This will age for decades, but is delicious today with some air. Without question one of the best values in high-end wine in the world, calling into question why so many fools shell out 100s or even thousands of dollars for big-name Burgundy and Bordeaux. Buy by the case.

  • Will this wine be even better in 10 years? Probably.
Will it 'close down' in the meantime? Can't say.
Does it drink beautifully right now with a QPR that seems impossible to beat? Most definitely!

  • If you're going to open a(nother!) 2011 Produttori Riserva young, you might as well open the best! And, even though I'm more of a Montefico guy, I have to admit that the Rabajà is the star of the vintage. Deep, dark red. A rich, ripe nose of blackberry, black cherry, black plums and other dark fruit, dried herbs, earth and iron, with a touch of dark florals. On palate, the intensity and sheer fruit volume surprises, but of course it shouldn't. This is a very young wine that needs 5-8 years cellar time, minimum. Powerful and dense dark berry flavours, with soil and minerals. Good refreshing acidity, considering the vintage. Very polished, silky mouthfeel with spherical tannins but big structure on the back end. All class. On potential (93-95).

  • Lovely mix of wild cherry, red berries, savory notes, red floral notes, and a light licorice/anise aspect; silky soft on entry, sour red fruits and minerals, good fruit driven but with terroir and stuffing in the back end. Excellent top notch Barbaresco. Oxidized quickly by the next day though. 92-93

  • Wow Pnp at a restaurant in the Langhe head to head with '11 gaja barbaresco. After an hour both opened up and the rabaja easily held its own. Complex nose and flavor profile but no detailed notes.

  • The 2011 Produttori del Barbaresco Crus (The Wine Club, San Francisco): Ruby almost throughout. Some toffee on the nose. Lush compared to the first 2 crus with some spice, but nice, citric acidity freshens it. Somewhat monolithic now compared to some of the other wines and not nearly as open. Formidable, clinging tannins and an imprint of soil and tobacco juice at the end. Stay away for now but outstanding potential.

  • PnPed. Oh god yes. For me, there are few wines that deliver like Produttori's Rabaja, and the 2011 is no exception. The nose is wonderfully perfumed with sweet and sometimes sappy red-blue fruits: strawberry, strawberry compote, black cherry, raspberry, along with sweet purple florals, some purple spices, stones, earth and a bit of iron/blood. The palate shows wonderful fruit and some flowers as well with a bit of spicy oak, earth and stones. The fruit is more tart and red on the palate than the nose, and the tannins are substantial but refined, giving the wine a great and almost creamy mouthfeel. There is solid structure here, but there is so much going on that the wine is very drinkable now. The spicy oak and sweet red fruits continue into the long finish and combine with some stones and coffee. This handles its 14.5% alcohol really well - maybe a touch of roasted flavors on the palate but just a touch. This will probably close down and come out roaring in 10 years. The nose on Produttori's Rabaja screams Piemonte in the best way with it's complexity and purity. If someone had poured the wines for me 20 years ago, my collection might look very different. Thank god I found it because it delivers a lot of what I look for in Red Burgundy at 1/3 the price. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5+/6, Finish - 5+/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17+/20 (with 17.5-18/20 potential.)

  • Four Piemontese and a Burg: This wine was the star of last night's tasting of the nine '11 Riservas but tonight I totally failed to pick it, thinking the wine was something like a Cogno Ravera or other more Burgundian Barolo. I didn't miss the quality of the wine ... Dark berries, creosote and lifted aromatics on bouquet. Beautifully precise on palate. Persistent with a fine grained tannic structure. On the reveal, this wine is amazingly approachable at this stage, but would benefit from 5-8 years cellar time, I'd say.

  • The nose was layered, intense and alluring in every way, as a dark mix of crushed black cherry, plum, savory herbs, and floral tones came together with earth and mineral tones to form a gorgeous and classic Rabaja bouquet. On the palate, I found full-bodied, silky textures with ripe red fruits and spice that seemed to coat the senses, as well as the wine’s fine tannin. The long, enveloping finish seemed to go on and on with notes of tart cherry, mint, and minerals. This was a hard glass to put down; it’s a dark beauty of a wine that transcends the vintage.

  • 2015 Tasting at Produttori del Barbaresco with Aldo Vacca: The Rabajà vineyard is known for its complex mix of soil types. More of a dark fruited nose. Lovely perfumes, suggesting dark roses, wild herbs and spices. In the mouth, more backward, darker and structured than the Asili. Big fruit expression and larger scaled but with fine grained tannins. Serious architecture, dry extract and power. Well balanced and proportioned with good acidity. As you would expect from the Rabajà, all class!
