Opened, allowed to warm up, and served. Medium body, solid ruby. Very floral nose with some licorice and menthol. Nice acidity and balance - lithe and aging well. The nose is quite distinct and classy. Decent fruit and not overly dense. Not as good on day two so I would suggest this is fairly mature at present.

The nose was so full of Brett that it was hard to drink. Once you got past that it was however smooth and silky drinker with solid fruit although not fresh nor lively. Good with reservations.

Spectacular Italian tasting dinner. 2000 Scavino Bric del Fiasc. 2000 Scavino Carobric. 2001 Soldera BdM Riserva. 2001 Conterno Fantino Sori Ginestra. 1996 G. Mascarello Monprivato. All wines decanted for 1-2 hours. Dinner: pate, seared tuna, NY strip steak, cheese platter.
The Bric del Fiasc was drinking superbly -- more restrained and, I thought, better balanced than the Carobric, which was also beautiful and had more prominent fruit. Contrary to the CT consensus, this bottle of the Fiasc (which has been in my cellar since shortly after release) was squarely in the middle of its optimal drinking window and a properly stored bottle surely has several glorious years ahead of it. This definitely tilts toward the "modern" style, but it is very well structured and has great complexity and length. Along with the 1997 Rocche dell'Annunziata, this is the finest wine I have ever had from Scavino. I probably would rate it even higher if I hadn't enjoyed it in such mind-blowing company -- especially the Soldera (which was a 98+) and the Conterno Fantino (97+).

Opened, decanted, poured. Very special. In its peak now. Loads of fresh black cherries, cigar box, leather, robust tannins that were reminiscent of cherry skin.

7th of 12, opened an hour then decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, best showing so far, tannins now largely resolved, attractive caramel notes added to flavours previously noted, rich and velvety for Barolo but lack of vigour to fruit makes me think this is a 5 but not 10 year wine from here. F+ (18).

decanted 1.5 hr, enjoyed over 3 more. faded garnet, mahogany edge; exotic camphor, candied morello, casbah nose, evocative; med-full bodied; persistent dark red fruits are warm-ish around the edges, juicy acids, cedar cabinet, tannins are fine, tho' wood-inflected.
enjoyable in its style tonight; although mature, plenty of goodness to last if the fruit continues to dominate the wood.

color: dark garnet with bricking ring; Bouquet: musty stink when it was opened first, then a developed bouquet of dark fruit , coffee and barn after 3 hours in the glasses ; Palate: it was rough in the beginning, long waited patience paid off , it has turned into well balanced, soft and elegant profile . It is a big surprise in the end. It is good to drink with food and cigar .must have at least 3 hours breathing time

Dark brick red color, clear maturity. Elegant animal scent with hints of cask, cedar, coffee, autumn forest, mushrooms and hints of blood orange. Tight poor taste with sour cooked berries and an elegant length. Elements of leather, and barn.

Decanted for 2 hours. Drank with moussaka made with de-cased pork sausage instead of ground lamb. The wine's surprising initial scent was pineapples. Later on, scents of leather then dark cherry evolved. The flavor of alcohol became more detectable after four hours of drinking, emitting the faintest scent of nail polish.

6th of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level, as before slightly disjointed, attractive nose, complex, rose overtones, flavours broadening and starting to taste fully mature, on exit however gritty tannins kick in implying immaturity, I doubt whether this wine will fully harmonise attractive as it is as the fruit seems to lack compensating vigour. Just F+ (18).

I had sampled this years ago at a community tasting and thought it was too big, too bold, and too modern for my tastes. The late 90s early 2000s were marked by some producers for a bigger approach to everything and a tendency toward the international style. That being said, I didn't have high expectations going in, but figured I had big meaty dish that I could pair this with. I was pleasantly surprised that the tones and overall profile had softened. There was some bricking, but certainly not over the hill. Some oak but not as obtrusive as I had feared. Seemed to improve after 4 hours in the decanter. A good, but not great bottle that benefitted from years in the cellar.

Slow ox for two hours, then 30 minute decant. Very clean and soft at this point, surprising candy fruit present and an absence of tannins. Slightly disjointed without food, but once dinner was served it shined. In my opinion this is near peak now and not built for the long haul. Drink up!

Been patient waiting for the right time to open this. Fresh Alba truffle pasta home made was an approp combination. Sadly found the acidity still after a two + hour decant. Hoped for fruit and softness with the blend of the truffle.

Dark red with slight bricking. Open knit aromas of crushed red fruits, asian spice, leather, pressed dark flowers and hint of licorice. Superb palate shows sweet and ripe crushed dark red fruits, hint of tar, fully resolved tannins, medium (-) acidity and a very long, floral and spice tinged finish. This is a fabulous showing for this bottle and is even better than 3 years ago.

Dull brown garnet. Deep purple grapes on the nose, surprisingly fresh given the color. Sharply sweet grape notes with cassis, sandalwood, dried rose petals. Delicious.

Most of the other reviews display an ambiguity here, namely that this should be an elite wine from a great vintage/vineyard and reputable producer, but that it does not deliver on all levels. And I fully concur with that assessment. Still has a very nice red brick rim color to it and had a very refined structure to it with elements of licorice and dark fruits on the palate, framed with a very appropriate use of oak that delivered a nice finish. But where it came up short for me was the nose, which was almost entirely absent (and I tasted other wines at the same dinner so I know it wasn't me). I just couldn't coax anything out of this bottle, which makes it a very one dimensional experience. I love this producer, so am willing to give the benefit of the doubt but I'd suggest this specific bottle has begun to peak. Drank after a one hour decant.

Good but not great. When turning upright (from its side for years) I should have had it settle for several hours. Instead I got some sediment despite filtering it. Live and learn.

4th of 12, decanted 80 minutes, quarter travel, perfect level, flavour profile rather thick and granular, if quite attractive, but will it ever develop the nuance I'm really looking for? Just about F with significant scope for upgrade (17.5)…..but it could go either way, still a bit too much of an alcoholic, hottish blob, though last reviewer saw huge improvement over last year and my cellar is colder than most so I'm hoping for a pleasant surprise next year.

Fruit has progressed more then the tannins. Great fruit though, very enjoyable. Leathery, dark fruits slightly stewed/dried. Will be fun to see how the tannins continue to soften over the next 5 years.

3rd of 12, decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, much browner and older than last October's bottle but otherwise with same aromatic and flavour profile even down to the rose scent, just a bit tired, hence downgrade to VGI (17)......likely to be an odd bottle (I hope).

Purple-brown color with little bouquet or flavor and with unbalanced acidity with moderate tannins. Some roasted meat notes in the finish. Nothing to write home about or to write about at all. Similar to prior bottle. I seem to always have more than one bottle when the wine isn't very good!

Purple color with some brown at the edge. Little bouquet and little flavor, except at the finish, when it tasted like harsh tobacco. I am afraid that I have never had a Barolo that was above mediocre, and I have had quite a few. I am inclined to think that this is another over-hyped wine. Once wines become over-hyped, it is very difficult to get out of the box, with the "wine experts' on board for the long haul.

Both the 98 & 00 displayed a more typical Barolo profile, deeper fruited, more secondary flavors including tar, earth and spice with more muscular tannins and a larger frame than the Sandrone CB. As with the Cannubi the 1998 was at a more complete stage of evolution, smoother, better balanced and had greater complexity than the 2000 which was still holding on to it's primary fruit profile.

2nd of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, still the monster of last August but more aromatic with rose and mineral notes more to the fore, still a bit brutal and heady, but more enjoyable than a year ago. I expect to revise my rating upward when fully mature, say 5 years. F (17.5).

Opened and decanted at Belloti in Oakland. Bricking at the edge of the glass showing age. Fruit is intact and well integrated but lots of brett with horse, barnyard, with leather notes and aromas. Disappointing. Will pop another bottle in a couple of weeks.

Deep dark red in color. Initially tight then opens up over 30+ mins to reveals dark red crushed fruits, tar, new saddle leather and hint of licorice. Medium to full bodied palate shows loads of sweet reddish black fruits, medium acidity, tell tale leather, tar and significant tannins still lurking behind on the long spicy finish. I plan to wait another 4 years to open the next one.

Had this over four nights. This wine really takes time to open up. On the first night, not a lot of floral aroma, more tar, sour cherry along with impressive tannin and acidity. Second night - for a while beautiful mushroom/truffle aroma, then shut down. Did not have on the third night waited for night four and really opened up with floral, perfume and tea aroma. This is an imperessive wine but you do have to be patient
Popped and Poured: Classic barolo, nice length, tobacco, some red cherry, color starting to fade but good fruit...def enjoyed but didn't stand out as superb.
Day 2: developed into more, beautiful and fragrant, very delicate nose, color is actually a bit deeper. Has found even more length (was def impressed by the finish on day 1 and even more today). Nice tannins, well integrated, good acid which is balanced by the fruit. Really a nice wine, rate 93 today, but still does not achieve ephemeral highs. I def would buy again. Seems to be more modern approach than traditional.

White Truffle Dinner (Otto e Mezzo, Alexandra House, Central, Hong Kong): From magnum. Semi-transparent brightly jeweled ruby colour. Nose is rich white chocolate, slightly sweaty leather, a stinky element that surprisingly didn't blow off, mandarin skins, some tar and subtle hints of rose-water......quite complex but somewhat reticent although it did unfold more with extended time in the glass. Palate is unexpectedly lifted fresh acidity, bright red currant fruits and slightly tart strawberries but overall a little thin and in a dumb phase. However, it has a lovely perfumed finish that leaves rose petals on your tongue. Some resonance and quite long. The tannins came to the front and over-dominated with extended time in the glass. Still a work in progress, at least in magnum format......I would revisit in 5 years.

Paolo Scavino Wines (La Pizza Fresca Ristorante): This bottle came off as oxidized and tired. Tasted more like a bottle of Graham's '85 that was left out for some time -- fading red fruits, hint of banana bread, fig. Over the hill.

1st of 12, decanted an hour - dense, deep, plum red; cherries, some smoke, rose, faintest trace of violet, rich; full bodied, heady but not too hot, decent length and balance given alcohol, quality obvious but not quite singing, needs a little more time to settle. A tentative fine (17.5/20).

Decanted for a couple of hours. In better shape than the 1998 we drunk along the 2000. Still some years ahead but with decanting a pleasure to drink now. Fresh and still youthful cherry, spices and melting tannins with a long finish.

Drank at Lusardi's NYC. I know there are divergent views about Scavino, but I have to say this wine was excellent. Red fruits and tar on the nose, massive mid-palate of red fruit and spice, and a finish that went on and on. Texturally, the wine was cashmere--incredibly smooth. There was no strong presence of oak whatsoever.
Popped, waited an hour then drank over the next 2 hours. Some fruit but seemed old, maybe a touch corked. Given recent reviews, this bottle seemed older. Maybe an off one. Disappointing.

Decanted (a few solids in bottle) and let rest for about an hour. Consumed over next 3 hours. Initially, very closed down with little fruit. Then, it popped open with nice cherry flavors, spices, and a bit earthiness. Remained delicious to the end. No hint of orange on the rim. Medium garnet in color throughout.

Drank the first bottle in 2005 and recogonized that this baby needs very much patience. And now, 9 years later I feel rewarded! Decanted for 3 hrs. : Beautiful fresh nose, red fruits but also dried plumbs, marzipan. On the palate mid- to full-bodied, well integrated but still present tannins. Very long aftertaste. A very beautiful, typical Barolo. If you have any bottle left it now time to start to drink. Will be perfect for another 4-5 years.

It's a very well-made bottle of Barolo, for sure, but it didn't have anything that could make me take great pleasure in drinking it. For the price, there were better alternatives in 2000 in Piedmont, even being this an year which has disappointed most people after all the hype it got. 90-91pts.

Weekend in Cleveland; 4/4/2014-4/8/2014: This was a very nice bottle of maturing Barolo from a great producer. Made in a bit more of a modern (big) style, yet with structure that speaks of the pedigree of this producer and vineyard. Decanted and consumed over a few hours. The nose was a bit muted, showing developing aromas of tar, leather, and fairly ripe plum and pomegranate. The palate showed a full bodied wine, with fairly supple med intensity tannins, and med acidity...I would've enjoyed a bit more acidity. The finish is med length, echoing notes from the palate. This is a well balanced wine with ample complexity, just not quite as tannic, tart, or acidic as I come to expect from great Baroli. Will drink well through 2020 or so. Very good, but not great on this showing.

double-decanted two hours. dark garnet, translucent rim; intense nose of brown spices, road tar, truffles & saddle leather; med/+ bodied; sweet & ripe on arrival, dried black cherry & blackberry, prune plums, generous oak is still the foundation but doesn't dominate; decent acids & solid length.
12/15/14 decanted two hours. clear, but slightly degenerating red w/burnt umber rim; lifted nose of dark cherry, asphalt, florals, incense, brown spices; med+ weight; intense dried black cherry, pomegranate, concentrated & long, spicy wood notes, above average acidity, tannins beginning to resolve. superb w/venison. (92)
Very pretty aged dark crimson core with orange rim; dried cherries, rose petals, new oak; solidly built, fat and rich, sweet finish, soft tannin, herbal note in the back; beautiful, best example of this I've ever had; called the '01 of this but quickly realized my ere.

One of the finest barolos I've drunk in recent memory. Everything one expects from barolo is there in spades. Possibly the only element I didn't find is that little bit of rose scent and taste. Otherwise, this bottle was truly remarkable. Decanted and gave it a short rest before consuming over 18 hours.

Closed tight on opening. After 4 hours in decanter quite open on nose and palate. Ruby with slight burnt-orange tinge. Nose of light red cherries, leather, spice and mushrooms. Beautifully balanced palate with good weight, complex penetration and yet light feel, due to acid. Smooth texture, but some tannin on finish. Terrific with osso bucco and a big hit with everyone. Probably will revisit in a few years.

Out of magnum. A real good bellwether for how you feel about oak. While the oak is pretty well integrated from a textural perspective, there's so much of it flavorwise that this tastes like what you'd get if you made a chocolate truffle with barolo fruit filling. Other than that, this seems pretty open and is drinking nicely, as the tannin is soft and not bitter or drying. Solid wine but not my cup of tea.

After an hour in a decanter, deep ruby color with a nose filled with red fruit, leather and spice, the only negative is a little too much alcohol heat at the end. A very spicy full bodied red, almost syrah'ish. Nice grip, fine tannins, persistent finish. Lots of life ahead of this modernist Barolo

Came in #3 out of 12 in a 10 year or older Italian wines night. Big, young, smooth wine. Give it more time, though even now with a decant it's a winner, just can be a bigger winner with time.

Very nice wine that is starting to come into its prime. Decanted and enjoyed over the course of 5 hours. Lovely and lively barolo nose. Nice array of fruit and earth, spicy flavors. Are you kidding me-this is fantastic! Full bodied Barolo with cherry and earth, with palate of roses, wet leather, and balanced tri-fold of acid, fruit and acid. Super long finish that says "hey-I can go at least 8-15 more years". Food (veal chop on grill) with this is an essential, and a benifit that will not disappoint.

Same notes as on every other damn Piedmont I seem to drink these days. Highly structured with tons of acid and notable tannin, showing mainly tart cherry fruit. I think Scavino has a modernist reputation but I didn't get any oak off this and it was only medium bodied. I probably wouldn't revisit for another five years.

Decanted for 2 hours. Deep ruby-garnet hue. Delightful nose of classic tar and roses with some earth and violets thrown in. Thin on the palate at first but filling out nicely with time to reveal sweet cherry and red plum notes covering layers of tar and licorice. Texture lush and yet sinewy too, acidity bright and refreshing, tannins still quite structured. Finish long and luscious with echoes of grip and cherry fruit. A striking wine sampled very early in its drinking window.

Not the softest mouth feel, a bit hot, but very much a barolo of that age. Good brick color, dark cherry with strong tannins and a medium long finish. Needed a lot of time out of the bottle for the edge to burn off but just kept getting better. A good hint of what Barolo can be.

Popped, decanted, poured and drunk over 3 hours. At first, this had a creamy mouth feel that was completely unexpected, with truffles on the nose and the palate. Red fruit including plums, cherries and red berries. Smooth as velvet with long finish. This was darker than the 1999 Giacosa Barbaresco we drank along side it. As the wine aired in the decanter and the glass, it slide through all sorts of delicious flavors. The only thing that I think it did not have was the creosote I find in almost all nebbiolo. This wine danced around tyhe room, with fruit, truffles and herbs evolving and pushing each other forward and backward as the flavor balance seesawed gently back and forth.

RUSSK WWiz Barolo Tasting at Primavera. My bottle tier. Softest tannins so far. Modern, maybe too sappy. If this is modern Barolo, I'm not into it. Not that far off from the Scavino Vin de Tavola -- thick fruit mid palate (think Petite Syrah).

Intense nose with licorice and tar. Concentrated, long and tannic, but still keeps a fine balance, with a lovely salty nuance. This is clearly a nebbiolo from a hot year and one could wish a little more complexity, but maybe time will solve that

Notes from memory. Slow O'd for six hours then decanted. Consumed with lamb roast.
Nice rich garnet color, no bricking. Quiet nose, of mixed fruit and characteristic, but not exciting nebb notes. A little muddy and muted. For me, the thrill of Nebbiolo is mostly in the nose, and this one just didn't do it for me. Medium bodied, nice cherry notes, nice tannins, and a medium finish.
A very good wine, but uninspired compared to recent 2000 Giacosas an Voerzios.

This wine was hitting on all cylinders tonight. Res/light rust in color, the nose was glorious, full of violets, leather, fruit, truffle and tar. Simply silk on the palate, lots of red fruits, Indian spices with earthy components that evolved nicely in the glass. Still some tannins on the long finish, this will be drinking well for at least another decade.

I usually don't stick my neck out like this, but for some reason, all of the good reviews contain little detail and the bad reviews are very descriptive. And then there's the WS98 review. Trying to balance all of this, here is my experience of this wine.
From a magnum. The wine was decanted for four hours and enjoyed over the next three. The color is a deep garnet at the core and fades to a salmon pink with flecks of brickish orange. Visually it is not showing much age. There are very concentrated aromas of leather, dark red cherries, violets, and juicy blackberries. The nose is becoming increasingly potent as the wine slowly breathes. The palate, at hour six, is starting to pick up some power. It has expressed elegant notes of sour cherry and raspberry that are turning to dried red cherries, red currant, and blackberry compote, with velvety wood and grape tannins. The finish is persistent for about 30 seconds.
This is a phenomenal wine that rewards patience. There is a great mix of elegant and modern styles of Barolo, and the wine develops spectacularly in the glass. On the down side, the intense nose is not quite supported with the length and structure of a classic wine. 95.

Given the positive reviews of late I thought I'd try one. I hope it was just too early as this was nothing special. Lacking in fruit and not giving up much. Decanted for several hours and it got better (a bit more fruit and the tannins softened) but then it turned to a varnish type smell. Will hold the others for at least two years and hope.

2004 WS Wine Experience" 2000 Barolos (Hyatt Regency, Chicago): Represented on the dais by the enchanting Enrica Scavino. The vineyard name (which translates to "Hill of the Flask") is derived from the the habit of workers in the vineyard bringing a flask of wine with them to get through the long workdays. The vines are average around 40 years old. Terrific bouquet of anise, fennel, raspberry and hazelnut. The tightly wound fruit is shaded with a certain spiciness, and even saltiness. Not as ripe as the Sandrone, but very long and tannic. 900 cases made. $105.

enjoyable in its style tonight; although mature, plenty of goodness to last if the fruit continues to dominate the wood.

color: dark garnet with bricking ring; Bouquet: musty stink when it was opened first, then a developed bouquet of dark fruit , coffee and barn after 3 hours in the glasses ; Palate: it was rough in the beginning, long waited patience paid off , it has turned into well balanced, soft and elegant profile . It is a big surprise in the end. It is good to drink with food and cigar .must have at least 3 hours breathing time

Drink up!

Piedmont Tasting -- Traditionalists vs Modernists 1998 & 2000: Paired the 1998 & 2000 - double decanted 2 hours

Red fruits and tar on the nose, massive mid-palate of red fruit and spice, and a finish that went on and on. Texturally, the wine was cashmere--incredibly smooth. There was no strong presence of oak whatsoever.

Very nice wine that is starting to come into its prime. Decanted and enjoyed over the course of 5 hours. Lovely and lively barolo nose. Nice array of fruit and earth, spicy flavors. The only negative worth mentioning is a slightly alcoholic taste in the back of the mouth. There seems to be lots of life left in this wine.

Similar to bottle last year, tight, young and muscular. Red fruit core a little more evident, gaining more balance, better the next morning. Try again in a year.

Big Barolo. Plenty of cherry and vanilla. Maybe some sweet almond. Licorice and tobacco too. Plenty of time left.

Closed nose of red meat and herbs, red berries... in the mouth, nice red berries, crisp acidity, but too much tannins hiding the fuit, didn't really open up even after 6 hours aeration... forget this wine for 10 more years in your cellar

Dark, dense, hints of cherry fruit, earth and tar. Pretty closed, lots of grip and weight. Still quite young but promising future.

Not the softest mouth feel, a bit hot, but very much a barolo of that age. Good brick color, dark cherry with strong tannins and a medium long finish. Needed a lot of time out of the bottle for the edge to burn off but just kept getting better. A good hint of what Barolo can be.

Kemp's 65th including some 1945 wines.: Drinking great albeit young. Great nose; roses, tar, leather and cherries. The palate is still mostly cherries with some tree twigs underneath. Smooth and great texture. Needs time.

Splendid after an hour or so in the glass, and continued to pick up steam throughout the evening. Not as much nose as I expected, but still a complex wine with a medium finish.

Will hold the others for at least two years and hope.

popped and poured and maybe it was a mistake as i wasnt impressed given high expectations. It is a good barolo for sure but even an hour and a half later it still felt closed so not sure what to make of it. Maybe it needs time. for me no comparison with the extravagantly good 2001.
