Raveneau MdT and Chapelot (Chicago, IL): Another Raveneau in that slightly waxier style, but the vintage gives this an extra kick of freshness. Plenty of salinity and minerality here, and very much in line with the 2020 in style, though perhaps there's more palate weight (though not more complexity). Served next to the Chapelot, this was clearly the underdog(!). It just lacked the old-vine extracted quality, but on its own, this would already be brilliant.

Drank alongside the 2014 Butteaux. Popped a few hours before to clear the wax and slow ox. This great from the get go. Loads of saline, oyster shell, mineral, and crisp, fresh, fruit. MdT was more linear and precise than the Butteaux but they were both incredible.

Complex aromatics of smoky mineral, mint, preserved lemon and oyster shell. Rich, intense and layered. Great mouthfeel and power, but light on its feet. The finish is dry and precise and very long.

Acerado, cortante como una cuchilla. Seco y directo. Tímido en nariz oliendo a cítricos sin madurar en una brisa mineral. Personalización individualizada de esta añada que puede envejecer eternamente.

This is more evolved compared to the 2014 Butteaux I had just a few weeks ago. There’s brine and honeyed notes on the nose, Asian spices. Good, complex palate. Smokey, honeyed fruits, spices and stones. Coming along nicely and certainly a wine that requires a plate of food next to it.

Lacking the richness / purity of fruit of the 15, but some could argue that this is the better wine of the two in the long run? Not my personal preference, but the wine has tension and vivacity. Both wines not particularly open or giving.

Another bottle showing a restrained, citric profile. This is by no means a poor showing with lots of 2014 chalky minerality and lemon aromas preluding a bright palate of lemon and spice with more of that excellent minerality. But I know this can show so much more — perhaps more time?

Yellow color with green hue. Complex nose of green apple and unripe lemon. Crisp and precise on the palate, with searing acidity and mineral character, displaying the typical Chablis oyster shell character. Extremely long finish. This is a top wine in a top vintage, which can be only eclipsed by their version of Les Clos. Stunning wine.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Raveneau. This bottle was crisp and lovely with succulent fruit. However seems a bit muted compared to a couple years ago, just not quite as much tension. Had a similar experience with 14 Valmur, are the Raveneau 14’s shut down? I would be inclined to wait at least 3-5 years before opening another bottle.

Quite restrained compared to past bottles. Citric, lots of lemon, there's incredible density here but it isn't amounting to as much as hoped or previously expressed.

Another bottle of 14 MDT from the same case but just two days later. This is so much more restrained despite decanting. Citrus bomb, seashell and crushed rocks. Lots of underlying substances that have yet to be unleashed even by the end of dinner. Perhaps patience is indeed needed.

I am just shocked how well this is drinking now. Citrus, lemon peel, seashell, and crushed rock on the nose. Palate is so regal with perfect balance of minerality, acidity and fruit. It has a good mid palate attack with long finish. 2014 has to be the best Raveneau vintage along with the immortal 2010. 93-94

Wow! Very clean on the nose with intense notes of Meyer lemon, pear, ripe peach and hints of apple pie, followed by notes of dandelion, white flowers, light early honey, cashew nuts, hints of browned butter, whipped cream and some mild waxy notes (that grew beautifully over time in the glass). Incredible minerality leaning towards flint, chalk, oyster shell and iron. On the palate it’s perfectly balanced with a medium+ body , creamy edges and a pretty sharp and intense acidity. Pear, peach, lemon peel, roasted almonds, honey, hints of brioche with fresh butter and a very chalky and saline finish.
Incredibly clean and elegant with the intensity and complexity growing for every sip. The longer time decanted, the better. Wild to feel how such a clean-styled white wine still feels too young after almost 10 years of age - would save it another 5-10 years.

PNP. Iodine, sea breeze and lemon honey on the nose. Crisp and energetic palate, chalky/mineral laden texture tasting of juicy peach and lemon zest flavors that are slightly salty if somewhat muted at the moment. Built to last.

Lonny & Candace each brought a 750 and both rocked tonight w/Vincent's fabulous 9 course dinner with 12 close wine buddies at the Minikahda Club in Minneapolis marking my retirement in days. This started out very linear and yet w/ unrivaled; focus, purity & drive. Even had it not further opened up in my glass, it was a headturner. Fortunately with a generous single pour from one of the two 750s I was able to sit on this for another 90 minutes and witness its amazing palate expansion vs its opening salvo. Signature tide pool aromas compliment an array of lemon lime, flint, pear, orange peel & brine flavors. The class and pristine nature of the wine is world class! A Chablis lovers dream wine! Dam, if only the market had driven the price out of reach for many of us. 96+

Craig's Retirement Party (Minikahda Club, Mpls): Light golden color. Drank two 55ml pours from two different bottles over 90 minutes. Since I happened to get the last pour again of the first bottle, rather than put pours from 2 different bottles together, I figured I'd see if there was any difference in the two bottles. Like the Comte Champagne, there was not. This was impressive on pouring, but after about an hour, this was truly explosive and immersive. Fresh sea breeze, oyster shells, lime, lime blossoms, limestone, and then at the one hour mark, there's this burst of passion fruit along with more tropical fruit that washes over you and the entire nose magnifies by a factor of at least three fold. The palate is finely cut, lime, Meyer lemon, tons of marine character, layered and full of brine, deeply concentrated and so focused, and then that same burst of passion fruit panna cotta comes through, just knocking this out of the park with a finish that seems to last forever. This has everything you could ask for from 2014, showing wonderfully, and yet this has even more upside. Outstanding. 96(+)pts.

Better experience vs a year ago, the fruit has added much needed dimension and there’s more harmony. Not intense or showy as Raveneau can get but the trajectory for me is improving (92-93)

This is simply an amazing Chablis; forget about where it “should” be in the qualitative hierarchy of the Burgundian classification and simply enjoy wave after wave of fleshy, intense Meyer lemon, a Cotuit oyster-like combination of saline freshness and savory marine character, as well as a beautiful custard finish. This is thrilling; electric energy, the epitome of balance in the mouth, and a finish that doesn’t end. I’m sure time will impart further complexity but this is drinking now. 96-97

Tasted next to the 2014 Dauvissat Forest. Gorgeous nose of lemon, citrus, and minerals. It was quite powerful at first, but much subtler and more nuanced a few hours into the night. The palate is quite rich, yet refined with more citrus notes, crushed rocks, butter, and lots of acidity. Long finish. This still needs time, but it's going to be a great wine. Wait 5+ years. 94-95+

Decanted to serve at HDL (sorry, no Jayer after the 97 Rouget lunch). White orchard fruit, perfectly balanced reduction, flint, Chablis minerality, all toned, graceful and elegant. Richness and precision in a glass, better than premier cru weight, more might even catch up with time. So far my favorite vintage of this wine. 93-94

A private lunch (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): Not decanted. Fifth time that I have had this and to my mind this is really Chablis-and-a-half. Even for Raveneau, this is a special wine. I do sense however that it is (finally) starting to lose some of its fleshy, youthful richness and that it is best to let it sleep for a few years now. Revisit 2026.

Initially a bit shut down, opening up with plenty of air. Density of fruit is incredible, with green apple, citrus notes. Slight creaminess on the finish tho not as pronounced as the 2018. Great stuff, though can probably use more bottle sleep time.

Lemon and slate on the nose. Clear yellow straw color. The standout feature of this wine is its precision. It has a focused attack driven by acidity and citrus notes. There's also limestone and salt air. The wine wasn't sharp or hard-edged, but it's not soft, either. With time, it will round out and take on weight, but I like it as it is now.

Nose: It took about a half hour in a decanter to open up, but oh boy did it do so. The nose was nuanced and deep, filled with gun flint, lemon peels, apples, crushed rocks, saline, pears, yellow flowers, vanilla beans, a touch of peaches, and some jasmine.
Taste: The feel is medium bodied with tart and racy, high acidity. The feel is well textured, deep, and balanced with gun flint, lemon peels, apples, crushed rocks, saline, vanilla beans, and jasmine.
Overall: This is wonderful as the nose and palate are just dining along gorgeous length on the finish that doesn’t want to stop. This could still use a few years if one has bottles. But, it is starting to open up beautifully with about an hour’s worth of air.

wow this was excellent... too bad it costs at least twice (or more) as much as I paid for Raveneau just 5 or 6 years ago... beautiful with a full body (for a Chablis at least), dense minerality riding on a citrus train, but enjoyable... Sedge said opulent (tho I think that may be a step too far), Tiff loved it (she always picks the stars... pretty much never fails)... fantastic and felt like it could go at least another 5 without too much premox risk... but why wait... did FOR SURE benefit from 3 hour decant... in fact I would say it demands at least a couple hours of air

A private lunch (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): Fourth time I have this wine this year. Not decanted this time, and I think I prefer it this way. Not as rich as on the first two occasions, a more classical flavour profile, but more open and flowing than when decanted. Great balance.

Popped & poured. In retrospect, I should've decanted this for (maybe) 3-hrs or more... Coming after the '99 Blanchots and '02 MdT, this seemed almost too young. Chalk, white-flowers, plus bits of chamomile & lemons/citrus formed the basis of the nose. Must say that the palate was fresh, mineral & clean/crisp, but unfortunately it didn't hit that "scintillating" height (as yet). This definitely needed more time, and I'd be curious to see how this would perform with another 5-6 yrs' of age...

A private lunch (Restaurant Rijsel, Amsterdam, NL): Third time in less than half a year, second time in three weeks! Decanted this time, and it suits the wine. It closes up a bit in the decanter, and it shows a more minerally face than straight from the bottle. Layered, rich, classical, drinking well now with great potential.

Superb. About as good as Chablis gets in my opinion. Pale gold. A lovely bouquet of chalk, fine lemon, oyster shell, pear, clotted cream and flint. On palate, pure, clean and regal. Intense with beautifully precise acidity. Excellent volume and concentration. Perfectly balanced and proportioned. Long, finishing dry and mineral. Grand Cru quality. Years ahead of it of course but stunning now.

Remote Tasting #3: Day 1 - was initially very flat, especially compared to the extremely electric Dauvissat Le Clos '14. At around hour 3 started to show some depth on the nose, but the palate was a little low energy.
Day 2 - nose is really starting to come around with a bit of creaminess and lots of white florals. The palate/finish improved significantly.
Day 3 - drinking at its best, started off with a bit of buttercream and developed into an INTENSE nose of florals and stones. The finish is very nicely balanced.

Friday Night Wines: Initially the nose was citrus and wet stone, medium weight on the palate with a touch of richness. As it warmed and gained some air, it filled in with oak and butterscotch notes. Acidity was balanced, and seems to linger beautifully. Overall a very tasty and good wine, but it did seem to lack a bit of energy especially next to the Dauvissat Clos.

I have not said this in awhile...but this was one of my top ten favorite wines...ever. I will not say one of the "best" because of how incredibly subjective that is, especially considering how this wine falls in one very distinct end of the tasting spectrum stylistically. This, to me, is how Chablis should taste; featherweight, minerally infused rainwater. Having said that it does not lack in flavor and might be one of the "purest" wines I have ever drank. If this is not your style...be patient. I'm sure it will pick up density and richness with age. Stunning.

Bright, pale greenish-yellow. Cool, pure nose of peach, lemon, smoke, and that classic 2014 chalky minerality. On the palate there's this crazy bimodality where in one sense a laser of acid and minerals just cuts right through from initial sip to finish, while simultaneously rich, almost lush fruit coats the mouth with incredible breadth and density. This is perhaps the second greatest Raveneau Montée de Tonnerre ever produced, taking a back seat only to 2008. Excellent. Drink 2023 through forever.

Served in a Riedel Burgundy stem. Flower / 1017 hPa.
Color is a clear, shiny straw gold. The nose is bursting with white flowers of chamomile and clover, lime zest, asian pear, and chalky minerality. The flavor follows suit, but the opulence of the site shows with brioche, wildflower honey, pear, and preserved lemons. True to form for the vintage, this needs a lot of time to open up. After an hour and a half slow oxidation, the throttle goes to eleven. Saline, crushed oyster shell, sun kissed ripe peach, and kombu burst from the glass. The bottle is clearly so excruciatingly young, yet brimming with energy and verve. Two things stand out compared to the '14 Forets had a few months prior - that this wine is wound up with so much more potential (and the Forets was incredible in its own right), and that the opulence of the site is present; the '14 MDT is just more of everything. I look forward to watching this unfurl, though maybe not for 5-6 years where I can see it hitting the stride the 2010 MDT is now. Until the next time.

A vintage-typical nose of chalky minerality and lemon zest meets a producer-typical mix of honey, stone, and anise. Both vibrant and refined, the 2014 MdT is already delicious but I bet will be among the great Raveneau MdT's with age.

HDH Dec auction trip/dinners at SKY and RPM Italian; 12/13/2018-12/15/2018: Almost painful in terms of how young and primary this is, but goddamn what a wine. Couldn't resist to pick this one from the wine list. Opened and inmediately served. On nose it's closed and beyond. Decanted after that first glass and drank over 1,5 hours. The palate it's just gorgeous, brutal and powerful but not overwhelming. It's mouthcoating, expanding yellow / stone fruit flavors with a light mineral and saline notes. A lot of tipicity (although the nose kept shut until almost the last glass) but feels it needs plenty of time to put things in order. 92-94

Popped and poured. Crisp lemon and sea breeze with some iodine on the nose. Very lean and energetic palate, puckering and drying with a very tightly clenched finish. Lots of potential to improve for many years. Update, saved a glass for day 2 and after 24 hours left corked in the fridge the wine was even better. Fuller and deeper flavors, the acidity had receded or more likely the fruit had opened/expanded. Wonderful vintage in Chablis and at Raveneau.

Spring Swing Through France-Random Wines Tasted or Imbibed; 4/14/2018-4/25/2018 (Burgundy, Alsace, Paris): Pale with green tint. Perfect balance of lemon and sea breeze on the nose. This is the leanest, most Chabisien, and least "Ravenesque" Raveneau we've tasted this trip. That is to say that there was no wood showing and the texture was less glycerine than usual. However, the flavors, acidity, and precision were fantastic, particularly on a hot Parisian night. Great drive, high on the refreshment scale, and I'm sure it will flesh out over time. The structure predicts a long lifespan.
After being open overnight, it has more floral aromas and some lactic/waxy richness while retaining its acidic core.

So fresh, so direct, so very Chablis. It's all citrus and mineral with a razor sharp spine. It is rich, concentrated and detailed. There's a sprig of mint and for all of its power it is extremely light on its feet. It finishes with awesome cut and length is superb. A great MdT.

Delicious but very young. Quite primary still. Notes of iodine, stones, flinty, with touch of creamy texture after 30+ min of air. Acidity is medium, finish is long, very clean and pure (without that wonderful touch of funk that Raveneau takes on after about 8 years of age). This will go wonderful places and is reticent right now. Best to let bottles rest till 2020/21 at least.

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Very focused energetic nose displaying only a hint of white fruits, pear, lemon curd, honey, rain water, wet stone and beeswax. Very precise palate, cool, linear, bracing acidity, strong mineral presence and a long clean finish with beeswax and mineral at the end. I typically get a generous amount of ripe white and yellow fruits in Raveneau but not here. This is a very linear wine with a laser-like precision, a bit like Dauvissat Les Clos.

okay, vinfanticide, hand up, sorry. But...on opening touches of almost ethereal apple and pear backed by cream and butter...with time in the glass and the bottle off ice this shows some wild ferment, citrus - lemon, mandarin peel and those orchard notes are slightly subsumed. Look, it's too young but it was at a great price and I couldn't resist. Consumed with john dory, paris mash, capers and puy lentils...simply superb.

Very impressive indeed. True to form, I open one of the recent release within the first year before stacking them away well beyond easy access. The 2014 has exquisite balance and drive, and while obviously primary, builds on the palate with intense waves of precise and pure hits of substance. I was a big fan of the 2012s on release, but this's better still. More nerve, more depth. The score is conservative, I can easily see this be a 95-97 in twenty years time. There's Chablis and then there's Raveneau.

96(+)pts.

Intense with beautifully precise acidity. Excellent volume and concentration. Perfectly balanced and proportioned. Long, finishing dry and mineral. Grand Cru quality.

Young but exquisitely balanced. Smells of fennel bulb, aniseed, mint, iodine and citrus. It is full and envelops the mouth with citrus and mineral flavour. It has great power but a strict acid backbone just below the flesh. Brilliant stuff.

Domaine Raveneau Cellar Visit (Chablis France): Tasting from tank. Subtly floral start with crops-section of apple aromas. Robust fruit flavors to start, moving toward a lean, edgy and long finish with a stony mineral-driven finish. Very exciting potential here.

Barrel Tasting of the 2014 Vintage at Domaine Raveneau (Chablis): Barrel. Pretty reticent today. Lower pitched nose, herbal. Acidity is well covered by the raw material. I think we caught this on a sullen day and don't place a lot of weight on this showing.
