Weakest of the lot today. Some (SF) saw Pomerol-like qualities, I beg to differ. Au contraire! - this is quite lean, tight, cool, peecise, but a wee bit unforgiving, herbal. It might come around, but I am not sure, if there is enough ripe fruit here.

A wonderfully elegant, pure, dark fruited classy BDX. It's thrown a decent sediment and opens up nicely after a few hours in a decanter. Still evidently young, but the balance is so good and the tannins so fine that it's an understated delight to drink now...but having only 3 bottles left I really need to forget about it for a few years so that I can experience some of its glorious maturity that undoubtedly lies ahead. I think I prefer the '14 to the '08 which seems built along the same lines. Fine, fine wine!

Definitely opening up a bit, though has some of the awkwardness I've generally found with the '14 vintage. I only had a little on first night, expecting 2nd night to be better. Better on the 2nd day - more well-rounded. Has the haut-couture house style that is restrained and elusive. This Chateaux benefits from a lot more time than most; should be forgotten for 20 years from release.

Bordeaux 2022 en Primeur and some recent vintages: The wine is still youthful, quite structured, beautiful earthy aromas slowly emerge. Haut Bailly compared to Smith Haut Lafitte, for example, is a more structured wine, not for newcomers. It typically needs 15 years to maturity, but, then it shines with profound aromas and excellent balance. 93+

Ten Vintages Haut Bailly vs Mission HB: Preamble: All wines tasted blind in 10 vintage flights (1994-2015). To every flight one random third wine from Pessac Leognan added (2x Haut Brion, 2x Smith, 2x Pape Clement, 1x Branon, 1x Luchy Halde, 1x Carmes, 1x Chevalier). All wines opened a few hours before consumption but no decanting.
Some findings: 1) Haut Bailly outperformed Mission (5 vs 4 wins, 92.5 vs 90.5 average). 2) Haut Bailly is a rather structured wine which seems to shine bright in ripe and warm vintages, without any form of excess ripeness or extraction. 3) When done right (05/15), Mission eclipses Haut Bailly with its depth and delineation , but several vintages showed a bit too ripe but especially with the alcohol not well masked (09/10). 4) Pessac wines usually need quite some air to open up. In this setting (no decanting), most wines needed a lot of swirling to fully open up and will need more cellar time. 5) The best wines today were Haut Bailly 09 (96pts) & 10 (95pts) and Mission 05 & 15 (95pts).
TN: On par with the Domaine de Chevalier which is slightly more round and charming vs the more astringent appearance of the Haut Bailly. With time the wine opened up a bit and some fruit came forward. But overall, this wine remains a bit charmless with not enough sweetness to balance the earthiness and astringency at this point in its life. Haut Bailly seems to be a wine for warmer vintages.
Decanting: Maybe a long decanting would have helped to open the wine up.

This is more of a current rating. This felt closed down and really didn't give me much. Even days later. Maybe try a long decant. Just a tad bitter and had a lot of hidden stuff underneath that seemed to want to show. I won't touch another bottle for a while. still a 93-94 potential, although I doubt much higher than that.

Decanted about 2 hours and consumed for another 4. At first nose was muted but even the first glass with swirling opened up. Deep purple in color and quite opaque. Blackberry, and cedar on the nose. Medium+ in body. Got plenty of #2 pencil, just a hint of oak, some bell pepper and chewy tannins. Blackberry really dominates the fruit component that is quite well balanced and elegant. Medium finish length.

In contrast to previous reviewers, I find this wine open for business after a short decant. Definitely primary in flavors but has beautiful fruit and seamless tannins. Think it’s a great time to drink this fruit forward under appreciated vintage. I would give it higher marks but could put on more weight. I am not sure if this wine has the stuffing to do so but who cares? It’s gorgeous to drink right now.

Purchased two bottles of this Chateau recently, one 2012, the other 2014 vintage, pnp this one today, a very fragrant nose of delicious cassis fruit and some spice, on the palate surprisingly more open than the 2012 bottle some days ago, very good intense tannin grip, ripe, demanding for food or a non-wine-snowflake, great appearance here, really elegant flow with very good deepness of flavors, wet stones, some gun powder?, delicate cassis with other black fruit in the background, polished and ripe tannin, makes you chew on, for me a great surprise in a very positive way, the tannin combined with the lively freshness wii give this vintage a long life, at least two more decades, luckily for all of us this 2014 is very tasty that young too! Highly recommended, **(**-+ -*****?), 92-94(+) potential

Surprisingly open, the wine already the start of secondary nuances, softness to the tannins and development on the palate. And this is a good thing because the fruit is ripe, texturally, the wine is soft, medium/full-bodied and refined, with a tightly wound vibrance to the wine giving you lift and sensuality. Young and fun to taste, it is clearly not quite ready. Wait until at least 2024 before pulling a cork.
Bordeaux dinner (Studio Neon): Blackcurrant, berry, plum, brambles...very fruit compote, quite young and concentrated. Cream, vanilla and, with time, a little chalkiness. In the mouth it's juicy with that compote fruit, cream, slightly chalky tannins. Young. Too young. Polished though. With time this starts to open more Cassis and blackcurrant. Time.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 6/20/2019-6/22/2019 (Chicago, IL): Fairly leafy, with some intense graphite flavours, and some intense black fruit as well. There's a cool elegance here, but a good balance overall. At the end of the day, this isn't a very powerful and intense Bordeaux, but it's delicious easy-going, luncheon claret.

Transparent ruby-red. Pronounced boot-polish/varnish character with some lovely mineral (read: non-fruit/non-oak) character coming through; graphite, crushed rock. Bit of anise there. Lots of sweet intense fruit in the background. Very perfumed wine, lots going on. Palate is more demure and spacious, on the lighter side. Fine, luxurious tannins that softly fade in and back out. Lovely finessed wine with a near picture-perfect claret structure. Great picture of the appellation and vintage.

The nose was wonderfully perfumed, showing crushed stone with dark woodland berries, lavender, sweet florals and spice. On the palate, I found silky textures which were quickly firmed up by fine saturating tannin, as tart red and blueberry fruits mixed with savory minerality to create a structured expression, yet full of potential. The finish was long and spicy with tart red berries and lingering tannin.

Rating is more for potential vs. how it's showing now. This was very closed to begin with, not unlike a bottle of '10 I had a few months ago. It feels like this producer needs a lot more time to open up vs. some others, though the quality is there. This is precise and delicate with a shrouded dark red fruit character. It opened up after decanting but I still wouldn't touch this for at least two more years, if not five.

Another 2014 winner. Much more open/accessible than one would normally expect from this Chateau at such a young age. Good acidity, but I wouldn't go so far as to say "flashy." Dark-fruited (purple, not red, fruits). Medium to medium+ concentration of fruit. Surprisingly tame tannins, which makes this surprisingly drinkable now. I see this as a wine that will age well over the following 20 years, and *maybe* 30, but I bet it hits its sweet spot around the 15 to 20 year window. Perhaps a bit too loose and unfocused to garner a "wow" reaction, but this is still solidly excellent. Gut impression score: 92 - 93.

Not really feeling this one. Poured out of half bottle and consumed over a few hours. Wonderful, honest, fairly delicate nose. On the palate it's a bit of a moving target, but at it's best it has a nice medium bodied palate with a decent finish, but also I sometimes find that the mid palate to be fairly thin and lacking intensity. Obviously, it's young, so not too worried. But I certainly won't be opening another.

A strong wine, here you find ample freshness, smooth, tannins and floral notes with tobacco sweet, ripe cherries at its core. Medium/full bodied, this is should earlier than other high quality years for Haut Bailly. Give it perhaps 6-7 years and this should start showing well.

A minimal amount of swirling brings out notes of smoke, red cherries and melted fudge. Medium-bodied and incredibly graceful in the mouth, with a melange of red and dark berries, minerals and a hints of graphite and orange zest. Finishes very long, with very fine late-arriving tannins that spread across the palate. I can only imagine how good this impeccably balanced wine will be at age 15 and beyond! Bravo! 95+.

Tasting Bordeaux from bottle in New York City (Cipriani in New York City): As expected (also what was suggested from barrel), this wine exudes pristine focus and elegance and freshness. I realize that some people who prefer the style of, say, Pape Clement, may not appreciate Haut Bailly as much, but this is my style of wine. I would say that Domaine de Chevalier in 2014 has a bit more mid-palate richness that edges above, as does Smith Haut Lafitte, but Haut Bailly pleases with refinement and a long, subtle finish. Give it time in bottle to truly appreciate.

En Primeur Bdx. 2014 tasting event, tasting pour, short note. Excellent and promising nose, immediately brought a smile to my face. Red and black very clean & ripe fruit, fine and well balanced wood present with fine & interesting spices. Lovely dinner and vertical tasting at Haut Bailly (Château Haut Bailly): Tasting experience not very different from what I had experienced en primeur in early April. Revisiting Graves (Vinexpo, Bordeaux): Am being a bit conservative with my score here. Similar to experiences with barrel samples in late March and early April. I admire the aromatics, very pure with red and black fruit of subtle intensity. The palate is highlighted by an impressive tannic structure, with ripe if somewhat foreboding tannins that aging will soften into a special wine indeed, because the finish is very long and precise – and marked by freshness. Score to likely go up after barrel aging.

Wine Warehouse Spring Tasting, nose of red cherry fruit, red currants, and boysenberry, same on the palate, medium/big body, lots of soft tannins suggest 2/3 years cellaring would help, lovely fruit, rich fruit, and a medium finish.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 5/17/2018-5/19/2018 (Chicago, IL): A lovely nose with a good red and black fruit mix. Really light and elegant, with generous fruit and some good minerality. Light and judiciously used oak here, this is a pleasant and easy-drinking young Bordeaux.

Bravo! 95+.

This pops with all that fresh, lively fruits, silky, tannins and tobacco, flower and cherry centered perfume. Medium/full bodied, elegant and refined, with the structure and backbone to age, evolve, and offer pleasure, this is a strong vintage for Haut Bailly.

Medium body, nice, clean, medium dark fruit, more forward and elegant, not quite as structured as some of the other 14s; very pretty, 10 year wine, just a bit simple and missing the layers and depth I expect from this house.

Excellent and promising nose, immediately brought a smile to my face.
Red and black very clean & ripe fruit, fine and well balanced wood present with fine & interesting spices.
Palate shows clean very fine fruit, red & dark berries and cherries, with good length, balance and depth.
Fine acidity leaves good hope for the future of this.
Excellent potential, and highly recommended.

Sweet notes from this fruit forward wine, licorice and a fair amoun of oak/vanilla impression. Goes down really well, and this is accessible also at this primary stage, it's very soft and elegant and really lovely with its fruit perfumed taste. One of my top 3 in this 2014 round. 94-95p

Lovely dinner and vertical tasting at Haut Bailly (Château Haut Bailly): Tasting experience not very different from what I had experienced en primeur in early April. There is a tightness to the wine, coiled up, which is normal. Fine and ripe tannins. Very bright and red fruit with vivacity. Long finish. 91-93+ You can consult my detailed en primeur notes here: http://www.wine-chronicles.com/blog/bordeaux-2014-barrel/
