Super Bowl LVIII 2024 (Alpharetta, GA): Tasted double blind: In comparison to the Mungier that came just before it, this was a much younger & more primary wine. While delicious, it is just not yet drinking in its sweet spot. Bing cherry, orange rind, some detectable alcohol on the finish. I called it 2013 Fourrier Clos St. Jacques.

Wonderful nose of strawberries and raspberries with lots of spice. On the palette it is a bit reserved needed a few more years to show its true potential. In a few years likely to be rated 96.

This uphill and stony terroir, above Mazy haut, like the Clos du Fonteny, delivers the most airy wines in Gevrey. Red fruited, with subtle spices and oak perfectly integrated, this wine was elegant, juicy, sappy, ending in a bright and long finish. Typical 2014 with its matt and restrained profile 3 hours of air brought to the fore more power and some black fruits. If it was opened a tad young, it was a nevertheless a vg companion to a T bone matured for 370 days.
Five hours to blossom. Dark fruit with lovely vintage greeness that is always so refreshing. Significant step up in terms of concentration from CSJ. Very powerful. 94

Rousseau Ruchottes-Chambertin GC 2014. Lukker seg i glasset. Hard og lite givende. Definitivt potensiale her, men alt er pakket inn. Hard og bitter finish. Sitter lenge, men hjelper ikke. La ligge.

Lots of spices and red fruit on the nose. The wine is already very approachable with good complexity and gravitas. Held its own against a Rousseau chambertin

Purely expressive red fruit - cherry, raspberry. Hint of spice and earth, but this is in its infancy and showing absolute primary power. Will age into a beauty.

Similarly decanted for ~4-hrs (in Voss btl - almost like a slow-ox, but with a slight larger surface area than neck of a wine-btl), perhaps almost 6-hrs by the time we got to it as we worked thr' the earlier flights/dinner. Initially not-yielding much (first 1-2 sniffs), it quickly shed its shyness with air (some swirling) in the glass, and when it did, the (familiar) aromas again stirred a happy look on faces, and why not, with it coming right after the previous flight of the '04 & '06 Rousseau Ruchottes (all blinded btw, 'cept for owner of bottle knowing their own bottle). The Rousseau-scents was almost signature (a friend who wasn't present would call them inner nasal/mouth perfume) with red-florals (violets), tinge of smoke/spice/sandalwood (adding onto the complexity) intermixed, presenting itself not only on entry, but lingered on in one's nasal capillaries thereafter. What followed next was nice & pure dark-red fruit (w/ a little dark-chocolate bitterness) encapsulated in a silky/sappy texture, flowing effortlessly across the palate leaving another lovely trail of "inner mouth perfume". Beautiful, and set to improve with cellar-age!

Why open a bottle like this now? Well it was on the wine list for a really interesting price. We had this after a 2014 Comte Liger Belair Cras and it was unfortunately a bit of a letdown. Decanted for 2 hours but it showed very little - came across as weak, sort of village intensity at best. Not what we had hoped for. Only had one glass and took the recorked bottle with us and consumed the rest the next day. Showing a bit better with some cherry but far behind expectation levels. If this was a representative bottle then the only thing I can say is stay away with the corkscrew for a decade + and pray.

2014 red Burgundy tasting w/ incredible whites served blind (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Beautiful harmonious nose displaying crushed blackberry, a hint of raspberry, caramel, sap, espresso bean and limestone. Already showing beautiful harmonious palate, silky and fluid, finely layered fresh blackberry and espresso bean driven palate impression, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, incredibly fine tannins and a seamless pure black and red fruit driven finish with a hint of sap and espresso bean at the end. My guess is the Fourrier CSJ but the finesse makes me to quickly correct myself as the Rousseau. With air, the nose and palate become sensual and perfectly harmonious.

BORGOGNA NOVEMBRE 2015; 11/5/2015-11/7/2015: Barrel tasting at the domaine. 20% legno nuovo.
