Double Decanted three hours before drinking. Still opened up over the course of the evening. Tasted as part of a 2005 horizontal with Cos D’estournel and Montrose. This Margaux was lovely - lots of life left in it, so no rush to drink. But it opened up nicely. Smooth and elegant, yet “bigger” than I would have expected. Paired beautifully with the grilled steaks and roasted eggplant.

Much better than my previous tasting, ago, now you find a round, concentrated, blackberry, black currant, and black cherry-filled wine with nuances of green, leafy herbs, forest floor, tobacco leaf, and spice box notes in the finish. Drink from 2022-2040.

Evidently Margaux, being rather delicate rather red-fruit driven - cherry and cranberry and raspberry straps - but without the supposedly distinctive perfume. I find the acid a bit bristling, for the time being at least.

PnP from a 375. Cork crumbled into a million brittle little pieces so took time to extract the wine. This bottle was not very interesting initially but turned into something respectable.
Very dark garnet. Nose not showing much. Some dark spice. Palate gives away roasted coffee, fading fruit, but a more exuberant finish than the mid-palate which is a bit lazy. Still has enough structure for some textural interest but thought this was a half-dead bottle on first inspection.
But, it did improve with air and some hours passing by. Probably peaked at the 90 - 120 minute mark.

I've tried this several times over the past four years, and it has been a "classic" no nonsense Bdx every time. Slightly less exciting and flavorful compared with last time, still quite good, but perhaps a little more acid in the finish making this taste less opulent than before. I don't feel this is improving with time, at least my case seems to have reached a plateau. Tonight with grilled, mint-rubbed leg of lamb.

Rich nose with sweet dark fruits, oak, plum. Feels very modern. On the palate medium+ body, with more dark fruits, sweet plum, oak, but also a refreshing acidity. Evident but also smooth tannins that really fill out the mouth. Aftertaste is quite long, the wine is also in good balance. In my opinion this represents a modern version of bordeaux, but it is still very bdx. I guess the vintage helps as well to give this wine a high level of concentration. Drinking very well now.

Very dense, dark ruby. Heavy cherry/caramel nose. Very severe. Dense and savory and noticeably over extracted. No Margaux fragrance or anything remotely expressive of the Margaux terroir. Woody, bitter finish. Continues to be a massive under-performer. Should consider a wholesale change of management and wine making team given the decent terroir they have and the perfect 2005 vintage conditions this is quite frankly embarrassing. Avoid at all costs, even if offered a free glass!

Decanted for 2h. This has fragrant oak, leather, and red fruit on the nose. The palate is classic Bdx, a dry but juicy Margaux. I don't find this boring (as others have suggested) but a decent example of a well made wine from this region that is reasonably priced. It has the intensity and fruit extraction of a medium bodied red wine, lots of red fruit, oak, leather, iodine, and still some tannins on the finish.
Last night I was fortunate to taste two aged northern CA wines that were clearly targeting a BDx flavor profile. They were well priced for CA but when you consider this Cantenac Brown at approximately the same price point, it made me realize: why approximate when you can have the real thing. I enjoy this mid-tier Bdx as much or more than a CA wine of the same price point.

I opened up my last 2005 of 6 at 4pm today to give it some time to recover from the cooling cabinet in which it was stored for 10 years. Then had the quail, brocoli and sweet potato gratin with sour cream salvi pepper salt garlic and old dutch grinded cheese on top for diner. I emptied the last ml from the bottle at 8:20pm. The wine was up to par with the evening and diner. BUT I am going to be honest. The diner was well appreciated, the wine was fair and uncomplicated. Nothing there that bowled me or anyone else over. Nothing that got me into pondering about any significance. Slick and not damaging as I think I will be fine tomorrow morning. Yet I could not extract anything memorable from this last bottle during any time of the enjoyment of it. However I cannot dismiss this bottle as mediocre either as I feel its not harmed me. What I take away from it tonight is that in future I will avoid investing in this claret. Again you can easily empty a whole bottle of this without getting a hangover as its well made but then I was eager to find justification for investing and keeping it for twelve years. Unfortunately it was not there and I think life is too short to drink unmemorable wine. Its a true Margaux though in the sense of it being accessible to females. They would appreciate this Cantenac. Largely.

Consistent with previous notes 3 years ago only more closed now. Took about 2+ hours to fully open up in the decanter. Bright red fruit and herbs on the nose with dark fruit, soy, and cherries into the lengthy but tannic finish. Drink through 2030. Technical score: 92. Enjoyment score: 91.

Opened to breathe for an hour. Opulent woodsy nose, berries, leather, mushrooms. It smells great! The palate smooth red fruit, oak, and lingering tannins on the acid finish. Very tasty Margaux open for business. Delicious tonight with home grilled sirloin burgers. While not super complex, everything is where it should be for a satisfying Friday night experience.
Looking back from my notes from 3 months ago, it seems the present bottle was approachable much more quickly. Not really sure if this reflects further maturity of the wine or just natural bottle variation.

Decanted for 3h, sampling throughout. It was with some trepidation that I opened this having read recent lackluster CT reviews in the past 3 months, and at first my concern seemed to be justified. Initially the nose was a blast of crayola crayons, and the palate hefty but unbalanced. Disappointing indeed, based on my reviews in early '16 and '14.
At some point after the 2h mark, the wine pulled itself together and began to show her former classy self. At 3h, the nose has shaken down to pungent, mushroomy, cedar oakiness, and the palate is full on red cherries, oak, wet earth, tannins, black pepper, and acid. A smooth Margaux approaching maturity. This hopefully just needs a few more years to iron on the kinks, but if you do come across this wine be advised that 2-3h of decanting will be needed for it to show its best. Do not PNP at a restaurant or you may be disappointed.

If there was such a thing as "boring" classed growth claret, this would be it. It sounds churlish, because it's always a privilege to drink fine claret and of course this is and is well made, but really, this isn't earth shattering stuff. It's the sort of thing that would make dinner with someone boring who was paying for it pleasantly tolerable.

Opened to breathe for 3h. A beautiful Bdx. Huge nose of truffles, tar, minerals, and black cherries. These flavors all hang together on the palate, along with a pleasant finish and soft tannins. This seems better than the last time I sampled from my case in 2014, now softer and well integrated. Tonight with grilled chicken and bitter greens salad. Although enjoyable now, I think this will benefit from at least 2 more years of aging.
This wine held up well overnight, still delicious with few evolutionary changes on Day 2.

En Primeur Bdx. 2014 tasting event, reference wine from producer from older vintage, tasting pour, short note. Intruiging nose, text book Left Bank Bdx., graphite, cassis, fine hers, cedar and some wet leather. Young palate, needs time to develop and come together. Shows fine acidity and ripe young fruit in a good balance, still tannic. Nose is much more towards the mature, will become a fine bottle in a few years. (90 – 92)

With coaxing you find the truffle, cigar box, cassis and forest floor aromatics. More interesting on the nose than the palate, the wine is full bodied, tannic and fresh, with a fine, dusty texture in the crisp finish. Give it another 5 years to soften and come together and this could be even better. Over the past few years, the estate has clearly upped their game.

(Decanter's Bordeaux '05, '09, '10 tasting) :: Great lift of mint, notes of fresh herbs. A good complement of subtle mineral complexities, and a lovely balance between red/black fruits. There are some undertones of tobacco leaf, too. Very good, though tannins are still quite imposing.

Appearance: Bright and clear, it has deep ruby color, with paler rims and legs. Nose: Clean, with medium intensity aromas of black fruit such as blackberry, plum and dark cherries, floral notes of violet, oak notes of cedar, sweet spice of cinnamon and cloves, pungent spice of licorice, maturity notes of savory, mineral notes of lead. The wine is developing. Palate: Dry with medium acidity, the wine has medium (+) tannin of ripe and silky texture. Medium in alcohol, medium (+) body and medium intensity flavors of black fruit such as cassis, blackberry, plum and dark cherries, sweet spice of cloves, floral notes of violet, animal notes of meaty. The wine has a medium (+) finish. Conclusion: Very good quality high-priced Margaux with typical characters, the nose is reasonably intense with good complexity, with the palate demonstrating the famous elegance of the wines of the commune, though the flavors are simpler comparatively. Good balance and in harmony, the wine has structured and fair concentration, plus a fairly long finish. It is ready to drink now though can further develop for another 3-5 years.

Lots of stuffing, seems to have all the classic Bordeaux elements, but comes up short on the tannic finish, which thins out ever so abruptly and sadly. A few more years may improve this somewhat, given the relatively high acidity, but it should probably be enjoyed now for its smooth, rich, but dry classical attributes. The 2009 and 2010 are in another league.

åpnet dag 1, men ble korket og satt i kjelleren igjen da vinen var altfor "trang". Dag 2 er den fremdeles relativt "trang i skjæret" med høy syre og medium fylde/konsentrasjon. Totalt ubalansert syre i denne vinen! Skuffende vin fra en årgang der de aller fleste produserte gode viner. Dette er "styr unna" for meg... 86-87 poeng (da er jeg snill).

Double decanted. Immediately a large fruit and cedar nose. Aggressive on the palate, red plums, leather, and structured acid and tannin. This wine's still getting its act together, young and not fully mature. Nice complexity with secondary flavors of cedar, pencil lead.
After 3h, new notes of leather, muted oak and dark red cherries. Delicious.
Probably should hold off at least 1-2 more years before trying my next bottle.

Decanted 2+ hours prior to dinner of grilled filet, potatoes, and steamed veggies. Dark, cloudy, sappy violet/dark-purple color. The tight nose brings candied raspberries, menthol, dried cherries, and good old Bordeaux earthiness and leafy greens. The palate is full-bodied, bringing a round, supple, laser beam of ripe raspberries, chocolate-covered cherries, mocha, plums, green herbs, and plenty of baking spices, which leads into an outstanding finish that lingers for 45-60 seconds. This is in a good drinking window right now. However, this guy is big enough to last another 10-15 years. Focus on improvement in the nose and mid-palate. Drink 2014 - 2030.
My first reaction after the pop and pour was too much oak. However gave this a bit of time and it came together pretty well into a pretty decent Bordeaux. I think many have mentioned maybe a bit too new worldish without the distinctive Bordeaux earthiness but that doesn't take away from it being a pretty nice wine. Decant or give a tiny bit longer.

A punchy Margaux that is overflowing with fruit! Appealing ruby core. Exuberant raspberry and cassis aromas. Soft texture and plenty of lush, juicy tannins. On the palate the wine is packed with perfectly well integrated berry fruit flavors as well as some oak and chocolatey notes. Fairly long sweet finish. Another great success in this fabulous vintage. Drinking window: 2012-2030

To paraphrase Tom Jones: "Oak bomb, oak bomb, you're my oak bomb." This was a curious wine, not Margaux like at all. Aroma was too sweet straight out of the bottle, and the palate showed a battle between fruit and oak until it was all gone. Fun? Yes. Enjoyable? Somewhat. Fine wine? At certain junctures. The problem is that I don't think there's enough fruit or tannin to last the course. This oak will take years to integrate and by that time the other components of this wine will definitely be on the wain. By at the right price to stump your bordeaux fan friends.

Surprisingly approachable and open for business, albeit primal and with limited secondary aromatics. Very generous fruit and tame tannins, with aromas of pencil shavings, cassis, and leather, wrapped in a balanced mid-palate and with a long finish. Typical Margaux. Will reward cellaring, but may be consumed now after aeration.

perfect representation of Margaux. Smooth and silky with fruit and an undercurrent of the terroir. Well done. I will seek more for sure. 2005 is a particularly good year which didn't hurt. I drank in 12/2012 and its about perfect for my taste, but I like them on the upside of the bell curve.

Lean, simple, medium bodied and a bit oaky. This was the last vintage made by the previous owners. Starting with the 2006, there is a marked improvement in the wine, along with a commitment to ratchet up the quality for future vintages.

Blind Tasting (Roberts House, Philadelphia PA): tasted blind in flight of 3 LB bordeaux. really nice. light caramel and vanilla notes on top of black cherry. i continue to enjoy this more than most and will have to try back vintages. lighter tannin profile. misidentified as the high end, but the lack of stuffing and developing palate should have clued me in.

Blind Price Test (Our House (2033 Brandywine)): This is showing some evolution from the last time I had it. It has moved from a lush more fruit forward wine to something a bit more austere, with some secondary development emerging. The nice purple fruit is still there, but this has a bit more of an earthy, tobacco and mineral type feel to it on the palate. A solid wine that should continue to evolve very well for the next decade at least.

Yikes. Big, lacking defining character but still recognizable as a solid well made classified growth Bordeaux.
2nd Tasting- Okay...Here is my problem with this wine... This is definitely a classified growth Bordeaux but it doesn't have the characteristics that make Margaux Margaux. There is no sweet haunting perfume that gives Margaux that aroma that no other wine producing region can produce. So while I can tell this is a quality wine that is still way too young to drink it will never be what I am expecting from an expensive Margaux and as such is only a 90 point wine for not reflecting Margaux terroir or the appellations strongest characteristics.

Tasting Day 1: Powerful Nose, dominant are black currant, oak, and vanilla. Very young and tannic but not adstringent and already enjoyable. Promises to become much better after 2012. First two hours are disappointing. No character builds up and the individual impressions seem not to form one consistent body. With time however, a great body is revealed. Strawberry notes open up and mingle with the strawberry. Figue and cedar complement the early vanilla and oak. The finish is wonderfully long. At the very end there is even an aftertaste of almond chocolate. Look forward to tasting it tomorrow. Day 2: No improvement. But it still is powerful. Promising in another two to three years time.

To paraphrase Tom Jones: "Oak bomb, oak bomb, you're my oak bomb."
This was a curious wine, not Margaux like at all.
