Not a fan of second wines as they are overpriced for what they are and receive sup-par grapes but this 2005 was very respectable. Discrete nose of spices, red and dark fruit. Racy acidity, tannins well managed. An elegant 2005 that is early in its drinking window. Confirms that the 2005 should not be consumed before 2025 and the top wines not before 2030, at age 25.

I always have difficulty in describing my tasting experience when I come across a wine like this that I prefer not to pick apart and wish to describe simply as YUM!! I know it’s not very descriptive but it describes how I feel when everything is perfect Nose, palate integration and finish. This wine qualifies for simply YUM.

Had with grilled tenderloin at Mark Wilhelm’s to celebrate Walt’s birthday. Despite nearly 16 years from the harvest this wine is still very youthful. I haven’t had this wine or vintage before so no direct comparison can be made. Still with prominent oak, primary cabernet flavors and integrated tannins. It feels like this has many years to evolve and be enjoyable.

Top Bordeaux 2nd Wines with Jane Anson (Virtual 67 Pall Mall - replay): Chocolate and caramel combined with dark fruit characterise this powerful nose. On the palate, powerful but smooth. Tannins well integrated so ready to drink. Will keep for another decade. High quality but you pay up for it

Completely charming, textbook, medium/full bodied Pauillac that is drinking in the sweet spot. The ripe, juicy, sweet cassis and tobacco notes with a hint of cedar are ready to do their job.

Bordeaux: Second wines in great vintages. (Valuas): Luxurious bouquet with smoke and beautiful oak and cedar. On the palate good red and dark forest fruits, graphite, firm acidity and tannin. This wine will improve with 5 – 8+ years of ageing. 93 – 94+

Verticale du Château Mouton Rothschild: Un nez moka, caramel, du crayon feutre, de l'élevage. Une bouche ronde et grasse, de belle texture, mais je le trouve trop boisé, du moins à ce stade. À revoir. 89+ pts

Like the '05 grand cuvée, the second vin has ostensibly improved with age. Decanted for an hour. Blackberry, pipe tobacco, white mushroom, rose petal and pencil lead. A core of pure concentration and agile edges. Exceptional. Drink now - 2030.

- Purple color and aromas of raisin, blackberry and oak. It's in total harmony and has flavours of raisin, blackberry and raspberry with a full body. Round texture with a long finish - a beautiful wine with a huge development potential. is well drank with a complexity of flavors. a treat to drink.

Dark purple rim. Very youthful looking. Offering up notes of blackcurrant, cassis and lead pencil on the nose. Superb on the palette with great balance and acidity. Lingers for a good 60 seconds. A great wine of great pedigree drinking superbly at present.

First ever bottle of Petit Mouton, so not sure what to base a rating off of. Was a good wine, but not great. Big fruit and still a tad bit tannic...probably should have held onto it a few more years. Was a typical aggressive Pauillac. Would certainly not ever turn a glass down, but given the option to purchase something else I would. Like I said...good...just not great.

Very dark in color with strong aromatics including roses and violets, currant, a horses blanket and red spicy berries. Full body with balanced acidity and tannins making this very enjoyable right now. A colorful fruit core is forefront with nice old world essence making up the rear. Again, this is drinking now.

On the nose: some fruit, plums and pencil lead. It smells like a cabernet but tastes more merlot, very soft and velvety. Very soft tannins. The fruit is mature but not overripe. Will probably be very nice in some years, but my impression is that it is a bit daft and uninspired.

Seriously attractive nosing, seems like it wants to declare something's amazing. Chocolate, dark fruits, full-toasted oak, seductive and good dept. I always love drinking this wine but never feel the power like this before.
This full-bodied, chewy tannin, crazy lively texture, very...very...delicious. Feel like drinking Cos 2005 !!!
The aftertaste is slowly deep down, leave another part in the mouth, full of passion and long. Bravo !!!
Drink now - 2019+..................95-96/100.......................

Only 15% of total crop used for the second wine, composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot. Tasted from bottle in February 2008 in London, aromas show graphite, plum and a hint of tonic cola, all reflected in the smooth palate, which at first revealed large grain tannins. A very satisfying second wine, also with a mint freshness evident from the substantial Cabernet Franc, echoing the mastery of the first wine in this spectacular vintage.
