This is another New World Chardonnay that could easily go head to head with the Burgundy domaines, and at a quarter of the price. This is at the top of its game with a mature palate. Lemon and apple dominate the taste profile, with a buttery palate, and a clean precise finish.

Bottle #5. Electric. Vivid lemon, both in a juicy and peel sense. Tangy nectarine flesh, green apple, some lingering toast from the barrel and a big swath of flint that is unmistakable. This has lost nothing in 8 years since release and it's as lively and nuanced as the beautiful 2014 that so many of us have enjoyed since release. I am affirmed again in thinking that this 2015 is as good as the 2014 was, and perhaps better at this stage.

Very nice. Enjoyed over three nights and while acidic on night three, the wine held up. Brilliantly lemon curd on the first two days. Frankly there should be a couple more years before it shows decline. I often believe Jamie’s whites are massively overlooked ….. try them and let me know.

Grilled lemon, white peach, buttered popcorn and a wet gravelly mineral note. Pure and ripe yellow stonefruit and citrus on the palate. Medium body, zingy acidity, good nuance. Long, balanced and sour citrus-driven finish, with a mineral touch at the very end. Love this wine.

Finally there is rectification for this wine - the first bottle was so great and then the next two bottle were just paler versions of the first. Now there is a maturity here that allows for the wine to shine with more notes of grilled, creamy lemon, powdered sugar fried apples and notes of old used french barrels. It was a very nice final bottle of my four, and reminded me in style more of something made by a Burgundian in Jura than of a typical California wine.
I had drink latest 2023 on this but it can go a couple of years more probably, don’t think it will taste better than it does now though.

Kutch Grand Tasting Round 1; 4/25/2022-5/3/2022 (FMIII in the OC): Slightly darker in color than the 2014 Santa Cruz but hey, it’s different fruit so the comparison is not fair. A little reduction on the nose and jalapeño. Sweet citrus. There’s a lemon drop quality at the finish.

Kutch Verticals--Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (My House): The aromatics on this reminded me of smoky, vanilla bean and citrus. Pretty cool. Concentrated and powerful with lemon curd, lime zest, spicy pear, anise and green banana. Finish of crunchy green apple, spiced pear and wet stone. For me, this completes with the 2014 for quality.

Maybe a little past peak. Faint hints of fruit arose from my glass after 15 minutes of aeration but the taste was thin and acidic. It improved slightly with aeration and warming but it was never very inspiring. While the lack of apparent (or any?) oak was nice, I was not excited given the lack of fruit and texture. Not sure this will last much longer.

Three years since the last bottle. Still a nice Chardonnay but still not as good as that first bottle in 2017 that made me buy three more. Lemon curd, green apple in spades, steely and chalky, with a bit of leesiness. Acidity is soaring high, I feel it is a little bit unbalanced. Enjoyable, still.

Remarkably consistent notes each of the past three summers on three bottles of this wine. There's hints of flint and seashells and the palate is briny with tangy lemon tart notes. Comes across like young Chablis. Edgy. It is taught and clean, almost refreshing. Still feels youthful, which is what I said three years ago. Nice wine.

PnP. Soaked cork and a very small seepage. A bit of everything on the nose; citrus, yellow apples, oak, butter and minerality. A big body wine; good concentration and powerful on the palate. The oak shines through with raised temperature and the yellow fruit also steps forward. Still very balanced with high acidity, which feels less promoted than 3 years ago. Good length. Seems like it's peaking now. Watch out for seepage through the cork!

While I was looking for something for the cooler weather I stumbled upon this bottle with a leaky cork, pushed foil and seepage. I decided to pull it to see if it was flawed, and glad I did. What a lovely wine. Well balanced acidity with lemon zest and a bit of green apple. I love Jamie’s chards.

Mold on the cork under the capsule, and the cork was soaked through but wine was fine. VERY acidic on first opening, so decanted. That really helped. Opened up with a hint of oak. Good but not great. Poor QPR at $42.

30 minute slow ox. Nose: Unripe lemons, some brine and stone minerals. Palate: Extremely bright and linear even at 5 years old with the bright lemons, oak and a medium finish. Given the massive acidity my last bottle will sleep at least another 2 or 3 years. Solid Chard. Right now it’s a 91 for me given its infancy.

Not rating since think this bottle was slightly off as the cork was soaked all the way through. Still showed decently though with similar notes to the previous bottle. This is lemon all the way - even more in this bottle - to where it dominates everything else. Seemed like this bottle lost some of the nuance and balancing elements although that was still a steely sharp Chard.

On the nose - earth and struck match. Lots of citrus fruit on the palate, lemon zest - medium + acidity. Quite a long finish. Bright and vivacious. I have to say very enjoyable.

A bit more open than my bottle 18 months ago. It is still super briny, and tangy and lemony. Reads like young Chablis, but there is a richer fruit profile that is really appealing. You need to be a fan of super-crisp, edgy Chard on this one, it shows tart green apple and wiry acidity all the way through.

At first tasted as if it was a bit premoxed. After a bit of time (and air) this calmed a bit. Definitely not fault, But still a bit near the end of its enjoyable life. The citrus and flint were still there and enjoyable.
If I had any left I’d drink (and enjoy) these over the next 3-6 months.
Served with a spicy fish dish that paired well. Green apple, pear, lemon, spice and a touch of oak on the nose with similar flavors and a hint of flint. A touch of effervescence as well that lingered to the last sip. Great acidity and balance.

Very reductive and lightly fizzy. Above the clouds the wine was very lemony and lean. High acidity and long finish. Unfortunately the matchstick notes covered all the possibilities of detecting much else.

Very good with nice balance, but not up to the high standards of the 2014 version. Just not as rich, dense or bracing in acidity. A dialed down version.
Full of citrus fruit and gooseberries. Very crisp and fresh due to the high acidity. Hint of oak. Very refreshing and enjoyable. My only criticism would be there isn’t a huge degree of complexity here.

July 2019 Kutch Visit (Jamie's Pad in SFO): Drank as part of a complete vertical of all Kutch Chards (14-17, to include Trout Gulch). This bottle shows a toasted barrel influence in the aromatic. Lemon, lots of green apple and spicier in tone than the 2014 SCM that preceded it. Using 2014 again as a contrast, the 2015 replaces the flinty/mineral of the 2014 with a big cut of lemony acidity/spice that is quite pronounced. This same quality impacts the finish, too. This 2015 is fantastic, and while it tones down the flint of the 2014, it brings an energy and presence that for me surpasses the 2014. And as I said in a previous TN about this wine, you have to like acidity in your wine to enjoy this, which I do...retasted the following morning from leftovers in the bottle at room temp, this is just really stunning. The flint/wet stone note has come forward and the intensity of the acidity remains, too. A wine for the senses. Excellent.

I think JRICK's note right before mine nails this wine right now. As with the '14, I'm initially smitten by the wine. It shows old world, it reads Chablis. Briny, and lemony, but there is a richer fruit profile that is really appealing and brings us back to CA. However, with air, the super-tart green apple and wiry acidity really come on and plant themselves in the forefront. Perhaps this just needs more time. Again, good, very good even, but slightly one-dimensional now, so leave alone for a bit if you have 'em.

Tasting note wise, I found pretty much the same now as I did in my September 2017 note. Still a good chardonnay in essentially a style I like. I am however a little bit concerned that I didn't like it as much as I did with the first bottle 11 months ago, and the green apple and citrus seemed to take the upper hand a bit too much now. The acidity I felt was a bit too prominent and I hope it is not a sign of things to come from my remaining bottles, i.e. that the acidity outlives the fruit. But it is obviously so early in this wine's life, it is seriously still a baby, so I shouldn't be concerned. Maybe just settle for the wine not being in its best phase at the moment and only return to the last bottles after a couple of years.

Glad I added a couple of Chards to my order. Very nice white. Definitely doesn't show in the CA camp as blind I might have guessed a Chablis. Primarily lemon / citrus on the palate with a fair amount of acidity and energy. A bit of sea shell and flowers on the nose as well. Enjoyed this.

Acidity and fruit are here to be sure. Also, a slight funkiness to keep it interesting. Not a crisp style, I would say, but a little more of a savory style.

I'm so glad Kutch tried his hand at Chardonnay, because between this and the Santa Cruz Mountain wine, I'm a huge fan. Complex aromatics of ginger, honeycomb, chalk dust, seashells, white flowers, lemon curd. So crisp and bright on the palate, with pretty notes of chalk dust, sea salt and white flowers. Creaminess is there, as is plenty of fresh lime, lemon and apricot fruit, but there's a pervasive minerality and chalk dustiness that I find very attractive.

Another corked Kutch bought directly for the winery. Some of the expected lemon and minerality on the nose/palate overshadowed by sweaty gym socks and wet dog. I’m out as a customer here.
Tart lemon fruit Overpowered by high acid which to my palate dominated this wine and made it hard to drink. This wine was out of balance. There’s some potential here for a style of restrained and lively wine but this one missed the mark.

Sampled over the course of three days, this showed a bright, focused lemon rind and under ripe pineapple aromatic, accented by a bit of gun flint or spent firecracker. On the palate the wine stayed focused as a laser beam, while eventually fanning out a bit on the mid-palate and finish. Reminded me of the Ceritas and Arnot-Roberts Chardonnays, and kept the toes of one foot in the old world.

Cork was starting to show signs of leaking (I have this issue with almost all Kutch I buy both direct and retail). Very reductive style with plenty of syrupy stone fruit, baked lemon, vanilla, white flowers, and a touch of mustiness. Floral and borderline sweet with fruit muddled behind this. Acidity is here but only detectable by a lemon zest zip on the very front. Just ok and maybe a slightly off bottle. I’d start drinking these.

Tasted blind. Lots of oak/vanilla, citrus and apples on the nose. Coupled with a very sharp acidity my guess was a Chenin blanc. For a californian very high acidity levels but also with some clean fruit on the palate. Refreshing and good despite the very high alcohol! Too much acidity for my taste though. Should improve...

Hard to think that I have let nearly a year pass without trying one of these again. A bottle showed up last night to our dinner and like the bottle from April 2017, our bottle last night was superb. Same smoky nose, reminding me similarly of his 2014 SCM. A mix of pear, lime skin, pippin apple, flint with the intensity of the acidity working in tandem with the fruit. With air and the temp warming the glass, there is a creaminess that emerges that supports the finish, along with lime and a light vanilla bean. Jamie has just 2 vintages of Chard released, from 2 different AVAs, and yet both vintages show a class and style that leaves me impressed with his Chards. For round $50, I'd argue that he is competing with and beating stuff that is 1.5-2X in price. Jamie, keep doing your thing.

Yellow apples, lemon, sea weed and stylish oak. Concentrated and rich with very high acidity. Like a mix between the power and richness from a Meursault with the freshness and acidity from Chablis. Very nice today, but will probably be amazing in a few years time.

First crack at the 2015. Two bottles a couple hours before Thanksgiving dinner. I liked it a lot, and it was a definite hit with everyone. For me, not as forward nor as overtly gorgeous as the Kutch 2014 Chard. But definitely very good juice and I look forward to more of these.

Superb acidity, flint and smoke, lemon, tangerine, white flower, green apple and lime zest. This is one delicious bottle of wine, even though it is still just an infant with a real acidic kick to the teeth, it also packs a punch of fruit and minerals. Would never hace placed this as Californian. Absolutely delicious and I'm getting more If I can!

Straw-yellow colour. Just after opening there are lots of citrus-sensations here. Strong fresh lemon and hints of lime. With a few hours of air and higher temperature this wine really opens up and sings beautifully with added complexity. Still the fresh lemon-character, but also ripe apples, wax, vanilla, a little butter and flint. Big mouthfeel, amazing acidity, an impressive length, and everything beautifully balanced.
This is a really well-made chardonnay. Actually one of the best US-chards I've ever had. Drinks beautifully now if you let it breath, and it will probably improve over the next five years.

Kutch 2015 Lineup (Maro Grill, Laguna Beach): Weighing in at 12.72% ABV Light yellow color. Nose is initially burnt popcorn but later warmed up to beautiful floral bouquet. Attack starts with vanilla nd then a big heaping spoonful of acid that makes the mouth immediately water. Very sharp edges. Strong lemon component and texture, very bright. As this warmed up it really took off. FMIII asked me what was my wine of the night for the pinot noirs and I said jokingly the chardonnay. It was that good.

2015 Kutch Wines....Done Blind With The Gang (Maro Wood Grill in Laguna Beach, CA): Second time I have tried this. The previous time was a few months back during Falltacular when I found the wine to be excellent. Fast forward then to last night, we opened the meal with this wine. Jamie had told me ahead of time to not serve this too cold and his counsel was spot on. Initially, this was too chilled and after it had sat out, it really came around. The first impressions were of a wine that was pretty disjointed, showing some light vanilla, a lemon juice quality and little complexity. But, letting the wine warm up to something more into the high 60s F, it transformed. Crushed rock aromatic, light smoke and loads of green apple, lemon oil and minerality. The complexity and balance is what came forward with the air and proper temp. Fantastic chardonnay........follow-up a day later, drinking the remainder from last night. I let the wine warm up this time, after last night's learning! When the right temp is on this stuff, the wine picks up a suave quality, and I also notice a pretty saline underpinning today, too. And, the lemon core of this wine is just striking to me, a real treat for us who prefer acidity in their wines, and you're gonna find plenty of it. Brig called it 'mouthwatering' in his note from last night, I'd say he is spot on. This is intense Chardonnay, pure.

Tasted from the tank right before bottling. Dry farmed vineyards planted in 1971-1972. Intense notes of green apples but also stone fruit and lime. The vibrant acidity has great precision and gives a mouthwatering feeling. This is a great Chardonnay in a classical style.

Consistent with previous notes - struck match on the nose. Palate full of citrus fruit, grapefruit pith. Very bright and vivacious.
