Since 1978 it is made as a single vineyard ‘Grand Cru’. Ripe and big Barolo full of rich and lush aromas and flavours. Deep garnet colour, bric rim. Intense complex aroma of dried smoky roses, smoke, dried meat, dusty cherries, dry earth, tar, smoky plums, licorice, new leather. Full body, concentrated and powerful structure, ripe and deep multilayered smoky red fruits, earth, chocolate, high acidity, grippy fine and sticky tannins.

A big modern Barolo. I guess any evaluation of this wine reflects if you like this style of wine. This might not be my favourite, but its really great anyway. Rose petals, tar, spices and black fruit on the seductive nose. Rich and full bodied palate also with a lot of licorice and sweet fruit. An amazing long finish. A little too much dryness, but better with a little air.

Surprisingly youthful for a 19-y-old wine, this single-vineyard Barolo is a block-buster. Decanted. Med+ ruby w/ a garnet rim. Dark for a Barolo. Med+ black cherry, blackberry, red cherry, red flowers, and mocha and new French oak spice. Dry, with med+ acidity, med+ to pronounced tannins and high (14.5%) alcohol. Full-bodied, w/ med+ to pronounced flavor intensity and length. Still a baby, it will benefit from a decant and many additional years of aging. Modern stylings. WS 95
In the context of more traditional Barolo, this showed too much oak and extraction. The sort of wine I'd have to be in the mood for. Judgment reserved.

Bouquet of berries masked by rubbery, tarry elements, a bit of flowers. Nice palate, balanced sweetness and acidity, a bit stern on the finish, still coarse with some tannins improving second and third night. A bit clunky as Scavino is in the 2000s, but enjoyable and slowly getting to a fully mature stage.

Rose, red cherry, earth and spice notes on the nose. Got more aromatic over the course of two hours with floral notes becoming more noticeable and adding tar to the earth/leather/spices. Between medium and full bodied (14.5% ABV) and quite rounded and accessible upfront (even upon opening) with a mix of red cherry and red berries. The wine is predominantly red fruit-based but does bring in some deeper notes as well as distinct black cherry through the middle. After an hour open, the fruit through the mid-body is silky and elegant, showing plenty of nuance and depth. Fine grained tannins and acidity are neatly integrated with the fruit on the backside and the wine finishes with elegance; minerals, earth and balanced spices through the finish. Overall, this wine was drinking quite well with the red and black cherry notes showed complexity but remained in balance with the structural qualities. Should be able to maintain this level over the next few years. (Restaurant/winebar Fuoro 51; Sorrento, Italy)

From a 1.5L. Pretty color with a floral bouquet. Ripe red and dark fruit, fresh and supple, some earthy and minerally notes, a silky feel and a slightly firm finish. Has a lot of time ahead of it in this format. Great bottle.

Lots of dark fruit with plenty of depth, but the overwhelming signature here are the drying tannins from the oak treatment. This becomes more pronounced with time in the glass, so by about 2 hours this is a hard, dry wine with the ripe fruit struggling to compete with the wood. I had heard that the oak treatment chez Scavino has ramped down in the early 2000s, but it seems maybe not...

Decanted two hours before service. In the glass, surprisingly youthful in color - magenta with an orange tint at the rim, shading quickly to deep purplish-black at the core, with a bit of very fine sediment. On the nose, plums, currants, and paint thinner. On the palate, cherries, currants, asphalt, and damp wood, with a long, tannic, and tongue-drying finish. Approachable with some air time, but this feels like a case study for the notion that all Barolos need 30 years in the bottle.
With that said, just do what we did and pair it with some chanterelles in cream with linguini, and everything will be fine.

Medium-dark ruby color with some hints of amber at the rim. Full aromas of ripe cherry and blackcurrant with hints of violets, red licorice and some sweet tobacco. Full bodied and smooth with dusty tannins, fresh acidity and sweet fruit. The finish is very long and remains fresh throughout.
This wine is drinking great right now but, although already 16 years old, is still incredibly vibrant and almost youthful. It will probably last for at least another 10 years.

Dark cherries, chocolate, roses, red berries, and cedar on the nose. Still quite tannic, good acidity, red berries, dark chocolate, and mire dark cherry flavors on the palate. Good finish. High quality, but a bit too dark fruited and oak influenced. Would be a great wine if it had a bit more subtlety.
A couple of year ago, I opened the first of 6 bottles and was completely underwhelmed. Very dissapointing after so many years in the cellar, until now, that is: Opened the bottle and poured a glass. Already I noticed the difference as the aroma's where evident as they sprang from the glass, cherry, laurel, licorice, spices, wow. Still beautifully red, hardly any sign of aging after 16 years. Full bodied mouthfeel and -probabably because I was already eating some charcuterie and bread, soft tannins. Of course I was expecting the oppostite as the last bottle was quite austere. Long aftertaste. Well balanced and just well-made. It just needs time. So in short, a great experience!

Never came across any wine with such strong eucalyptus on the nose, cool, minty, and floral. Mountains of tannins hit you on entry, severely dry palate, never experienced anything so extreme either. Finished hot with bitter chocolate. Now I can see why JG scored this 72 points. Mainly dark fruits and soils. Enjoyable? No. Could get better? Maybe. No idea which way this will end up. Given an option, I wouldn’t buy this wine, sadly still have a few bottles left, another dud in the cellar, door gift? Had another glass on the 2nd day, pretty much stayed the same, extremely dry mid-palate, these guys had to be doing something crazy and unconventional during the wine making process to produce a wine this bad.

The bouquet is not entirely clean with eucalyptus, rubbery and woody elements, and more subtle ripe berries and almond aroma underneath. Palate is full-bodied, ripe, with dark fruits, a bit heavy and sweet, with some freshness, good substance. The finish is of medium length, with fine tannins, some sweetness, menthol and spicy, woody components. Was better the second night. Needs time upon opening to breathe and become more balanced.

Annual Pilgrimage to Piedmont - 2019 Edition; 10/17/2019-10/20/2019 (Piedmont, Italy): A year to the day since we tried this last ( Papies 93) and very consistent and giving wine and probably now at its peak especially should one want a bit of the fruit side. Well evolved and with lots of earthy tones, silky tannin . Very solid once again. 93 and drink at will.

Needed one hour to open up. Not a very elegant nose but fully open and mature now. A blt heat and VA, also oak and wet iron. Not the elegant rose and tar of some more traditional producers. When I first blindtasted this among other modernists 10-12 years ago, this was one of the better ones. In the meantime, we have all rediscovered the traditional producers and unfortunately Scavino was very modern at this time. He has changed a few times. In 1990 this wine was amazing and I bet it will be good again in recent vintages, the terroir should warrant this.
BYO - Erik: Lovely and intensely perfumed nose. Packed with rose petals and blueberry mixed with a huge acidity. Very intense and with some tar in the aftertaste. Still very young and has some sweet tobacco and herbal notes to it. Lovely.

Peter's BDay (Bistro Na Pasadena): The VA on the nose to start was off-putting. Ignored this for 2 hours and it improved a bit, but still not entirely enjoyable to my palate. Extremely modern in style: nail-polish remover with high toned strawberry and balsamic, and then loads of wood. Super-ripe and extracted, but dominated by wood. Not sure I see this improving.

My friend Johnny decanted for one hour. Great nose of lead pencil and earth to later become perfume. Great structure and well balanced. In drinking window right now.
The wine of the night for the group and myself, at a tasting of 10 wines from Italy where every wine cost at least $95 and scored at least 95 points. Deep dark color. An outstanding nose for both richness and concentration. Superbly textured. Ends with strong fruit, acid, and tannin that is balanced, well structured, and so delicious. Unusually drinkable and enjoyable for a 14 year old Barolo instead of being too astringent and tightly wound. As fine as it drinks now, will get even greater with another decade of bottle age.

2004 Barolo Blind Retrospective (i Truli, NYC): The 2004 Bric del Fiasc is a solid contender of the vintage and showed the Scavino style in spades. In fact, this was probably the wine that most blind tasters knew from the second they put their nose to the glass. It was intense with dark, earth-infused fruit, intense spice and minerals. It was dark on the palate, where I found an intense display of sour cherry and saturating mineral tones with silky, weighty textures. It finished long, as saturating dark red fruits lingered.

Time for the king - Paolo Scavino Bric del Fiasc 2004. It is expected that the wine would be very masculine, very powerful, with strong and firm tannin. Hence I originally planned on uncorking the wine 20 hours in advance, but eventually gave up on doing so, just kept bottle breathing it for 12 hours. Bric del Fiasc is from Castiglione Falletto, with 260m in altitude and south west exposure. The characteristic was high density, refined tannins, and bright acidity to support the big frame and structure. The wine was absolute beauty, with intoxicating and ripe aromas consisting of coffee beans, cocoa and dark fruit, one just couldn't resist. When I finally had the courage to drink it, i could immediately feel the huge structure, with dark fruit, leather and powerful tannin, afterwards came the inner sweetness, tar and licorice, very balanced and elegant, the finish seemed to last forever, who could deny that it was a refined sculpture It was the WOTN, and considering its price (just $800 HKD), this was undeniably an insane effort from Scavino.

VVW Blind Tasting of 2004 Barolos, double decanted, then tasted 2 hours later. Group #6, My #6
Menthol and wood dominated nose, shows a little age and also some VA. Deeply tannic and austere, good fruit buried among the copious tannins. Another wine that's tough to read at this point, but not one of my favorites tonight.

Beautiful dark ruby color, no signs of aging. Strong fruity bouquet. Dry viols, blackberries, blueberries and some black pepper on the nose. Very powerful fruity wine in mouth, aggressive acidity and some tannins. It's full bodied, and needs plenty of hours in decanter. If you double decant it, 24 hours is close to optimal. It was still pleasant after 48 hours. I'll wait 4-5 years with the next bottle.

Slow ox for 8hrs at cellar temp then decanted 3hrs prior to consumption. Deep red crimson color--quite dark for nebbiolo. Quite concentrated and fruit forward. Has a nice aromatic nose of tar and dried ard red fruits, Palate was fine and polished, with prominent tannins but not terribly intrusive given the concentrated fruit. Showed more tar and leather meat notes on the palate leading into a lengthy finish. If is this modern styled barolo, it seems quite well put together and quite polished. I enjoyed quite a bit. No rush to drink these.

A sleek and clean Barolo that has a fine and dense texture with flavors of dark red fruit, forest floor and licorice. Finishes quite complex with smooth tannins and notes of truffles, eucalyptus and spice. Still young and coiled and drinkable now but I think its best days lie ahead. Scavino's wines can be controversial and I don't have a ton of experience with them but this is a fine Barolo that walks the line between traditional and modern. 93+

We popped 21 bottles of Cru Barolo - 2004 tonight, in order to really dig into the real details of the communes, with this horizontal tasting. Concentrated big nose with violets, some herbs, artificial floral perfume, some chocolate, oak spices and dust. Palate sweet but somewhat drying cherry fruit, concentrated, clean, but with traces of barrique present, with some oak spices and tannins. Good length, very concentrated, young. Modern in style. €87 off the list at Stua di Michel in Corvara, Italy where, if you're interested, they also hold a serious vertical of Tenuta San Guido and serve terrific food. Decanted and enjoyed over 90 minutes, this bottle was still pretty closed despite obvious pedigree and power. Probably one to be enjoyed over a couple of days or after a few more years in the cellar. The trials of pop and pour in a restaurant...
Barolo Tasting for D. Renn's Birthday (Renn House): Decanted 45 minutes before tasting - not enough and probably would score higher given proper decanting. Dark blackish red color without much sediment. Classic Barolo profile on nose & palate -didn't take good notes on this one - high acidity, stout tannins on the very long finish. Sour cherry / black cherry / dirt flavor profile on palate. 93+ tied for #2 wine of the night for me.

We poured the wine into a decanter and served the first glass after two hours, and the wine kept improving as time passed and showed significantly better after three plus hours in the decanter. The Barolo was bright medium to dark ruby in colour and offered lightly floral notes, red fruit, mixed berries, raspberry, red currant, hints of hey and iron, cocoa powder and black tea on the nose. On the palate the medium-wine was very balanced, with nice and pure red fruit flavours, red currant, red cherry and cocoa powder, complemented by an intriguing black tea component, paired with medium plus acidity, medium-plus fine, ripe tannin and very good length. A very good effort. Start drinking in 2015.

Nose was abit closed initially, though can sense that there is plenty of hidden elements under the mask. Plenty of heat too and has a touch of chalky mineral behind the muted fruits character. Structure and big scale wine, the tannins is quite high and gripping. On the palate there is more open compare to the nose, and the incense, sweet dark cherry, stony mineral mixing well there. Sturdy, powerful finish with some dark chocolate hints. Still developing and should be really good when its ready.

Sean's Birthday 2012 (Imperial Treasure, Great World City): This was many, many years away from being ready to drink. Open for 7 hours, decanted for another 3, it still showed a really pimary nose, where deep aromas of sweet black cherry were wed to drifts of violets and lavender, some dried earth and something that reminded me of hot stone. It smelt for all the world like a Rhone, with almost the entire table wondering whether it was Syrah or Mourvedre that marked its character more. The palate did not do much to dispell that impression. Very primary again, it showed deep flavours of sweet dark cherries, ripe berries and plums. This was a large wine, lots of fruit, lots of power and a noticeable bit of alcohol. Thankfully, it was also balanced by a good bit of rather buried acidity and a strong, masculine structure. On reflection, the powdery, teeth-coating tannins that gripped the back-palate really should have pulled our guesses away from the Rhone. However, such was the depth of the fruit, and so well integrated were the tannins into the wine, that while noticeable, the structure never really stood out. It had a very impressive finish too, with more savoury notes of meat and dried earth driving away on a bed of fine, ever-so slightly bittersweet tannins. Not quite my style of Barolo maybe, but this is a well-made wine with excellent promise. I would love to try this again in 10-15 years' time.

8/10 - Wound up tight tight tight. 7 years behind this wine already and it still feels young. Blackberries and leather. Tannins are smooth but quite heavy. Acidity backs it up well but could have been better integrated, as with the slight tinge of alcohol. A good wine but not a 96 pointer at the current moment. Maybe in the future, who knows? 2004 Piedmont Tasting at WineSense (Andover, MA) This one reeked of silky power (what driving a Porsche might smell like). Dark fruit and tar with menthol and plenty of smoke. Big and balanced, but also pretty tightly wound. Initially completely closed for business! After 5-6 hours in the bottle it started to open-up. Only the next day it showed loads of complexity and body:
Dark ruby colour. Full aromas of blueberry, roses and licourice with some hints of coffee. Keeps on evolving in the glass. Following trough full bodied with gripping tannins, fresh acidity and fruit. Very nice mouthfeel. Long, fresh finish. WOW what a wine. Classic Barolo! There is some upward potential on the 95 points I give it now. But I will need a lot of patience to discover that. This wine needs quite some time to develop, and has the structure to last. Drink 2014 - 2029.

In the meantime, we have all rediscovered the traditional producers and unfortunately Scavino was very modern at this time. He has changed a few times. In 1990 this wine was amazing and I bet it will be good again in recent vintages, the terroir should warrant this.

On the palate the medium-wine was very balanced, with nice and pure red fruit flavours, red currant, red cherry and cocoa powder, complemented by an intriguing black tea component, paired with medium plus acidity, medium-plus fine, ripe tannin and very good length.

Månadsprovning Munskänkarna: Closed, got too little air before the tasting. Roses, dried fruit and plums. Fantastic concentration with long taste. "Generous" tannins...
