All levers are in the [on] position. Acidity, intensity, elegance, complexity and length. Blindly, I probably would have mistaken it for a cool climate Syrah of dignity. The aromatics move towards Australia's syrah wines, although gravitating more towards spearmint than anise.
Still very young.
Impressive wine with a higher score in the future.

Dark purple colour. Distinct taste of black fruits (blackberries, blueberries) with hints of smoke and wood. Medium a little bit coarse tannins. Full body (15% alc.).

100% Tempranillo, 70% is on French oak and 30% on American oak. An absolutely wonderful fruit in the form of blackberries, black currants, sour raspberries. Fine minerality, tobacco and autumn leaves. The acidity and tannins are in harmony, it is impossible to say that this wine is 14 years old, incredibly viral and resilient. This vintage will be even better in 5 - 10 years, but are absolutely wonderful to drink right now. Needs about 1 hour in a carafe.

Big wine, needs 2-3 hours of air. Intense blackcurrant and spice. Some fresh herb. Velvety tannins, well integrated. Just enough acidity to balance the intensity.
Overall really nice wine. Will revisit in a year or two.

Redemption bottle for the corked one I opened last night! This one had a better cork (came out on 1 piece) and no wet cardboard smell! Deep plummy purple with a bit of ruby on the rim. Still quite deeply coloured and young looking. Concentrated black and red fruits on the nose with some soy sauce, graphite, India ink, black plum and forest floor. Mature and complex aromas! Full bodied, huge fruit extract, high tannins and elevated but balanced alcohol. Similar flavour profile as the nose. Lots of dark black and red fruits, concentrated plum, black mulch, stone dust and pencil lead. Finishes long, mouth coating, dry and grippy from the tannins. Still a bit of a bruiser of a wine!

Still going strong and drinking beautifully. Mature notes of smokey leather and forest floor while the palate is crispy fresh and silky smooth with a long finish. Wonderful!

Powerful nose, with aromas of blackcurrant, leather and a touch of oak. Really lovely mouthfeel; medium bodied, it’s powerful with good freshness and the alcohol is not overtly noticeable. The tannins are fine with a chalky texture. The palate is full of juicy blackberry fruit. Long. Fruit all the way through, underpinned by spicy wood. Very good but you have plenty of time we on these. Via Coravin.

Nose of blue fruit and toasted oak. Blackberries, blackberries, blackberries with menthol and tobacco. What a great mid-palate feel. Full, plush wine. VERY impressed. Did not feel any heat from the 15% alcohol. In summary, a Spanish beauty in it prime.

Enjoyed more in '17 than now- fruit is slightly baked in style now - blackberry, blackberry jam and charcoal. Nice bottle, but I prefer this wine in it's first 10 years from harvest. 90+/- tonight.

Deep, rich purple-violet color. Deep blueberries laced with spiced raspberries on the nose. Soft, Silky mouth-feel. Rich blue flowers initially that transitions to slightly funky Indian spices and raspberries before settling into blueberries in the lengthy finish. This bottle is very different and much improved from the last bottle I tried.

Bright acidity. Full body and ripe fruit that can last many many more years. A beautiful bright wine nos but I suspect it will last a decade or two more given the acidity and what I’ve done to learn of the Spanish wines. Will have to drink the other 3 I have on a spread out 2-4 year basis each to see how it evolves.

Oh, so good! Beautiful red fruit nose, with hints of cherries and licorice. In mouth it is sharp, alcohol is evident, so are tannins. Everything however is balanced, fruity notes are very intense. In addition there is licorice, some spice... Wish it wasn't the last of my bottles.
Dark and slightly dull garnet red. Caribbean/Indian spices, mulberries, and blackberries. Notes of black olives and mixed black fruits. Long finish with a bit of sweetness that jumps into the mix.

Medium dark red; black pepper, plum, strawberry, spices; medium powerful, rich, licorice, masculine; clearly powerful but in balance, this wine requires time (too brutal when young) - at 11 years it starts to mellow; fine

Too much (American) oak poisening the essence of a good made wine, none the less. But just not my taste. (Opened the bottle for a sip, closed it on the spot, next day decanted for 6 hours... still one wood juice...)

Fantastic wine. Reminds me more of a Ribera than a Toro. Tannins are half the way on reaching their level of full maturity. Wine requires a decant of a min. of 2 hrs. Wine shows a nice sweetness then, dark cherry, blackberry, currant, plum. The wine has a nice and lively refreshing acidity, everything's perfectly balanced though overall it's a pretty dark wine - mocha, dark chocolate, dark fruit. No hurry to drink this beauty, will last for about 10 yrs easily.

GROSSartig! Sicher 5 Jahre...

Color: dark cherry red - normal evolution. Nose: vanilla, dark fruits, coffee, animality, leather, pepper. Mouth: earthy, dark fruits, full+ bodied, medium acidity, lots of alcohol, dusty firm tannins with an earthy finish. Powerful, full-throttle wine - really good. 93 pt.

Very nice, but the alcohol is overwhelming. The basis of the fruit is there, but the now 16-17? percent alcohol takes away much of the fundamentals. Yet, would I drink it again? I would.

Ma dernière bouteille sera bue d'ici 1 an ou 2. 91

Very deep black pomegranate in colour. Smoky black currant nose with a hint of crushed limestone and violets. Loaded with tons of juicy black currents and black tea, full bodied and mouth filling with fine chalky tannins. High quality juice! Still quite young. Needs another 4 or 5 years at least to smooth out a bit more. Either that or a rare juicy steak.

Opened bottle 3 hours in advance. Perfumed intense aromas of ripe black fruits, develops in jammy fruits. Spices and herbs. With time spent in the glass reveals earthy aromas.
100% Tempranilo. Powerful, age worthy.
2008 Pintia is outstanding Toro with all the quality that brings Alvarez family who own Vega Sicilia. Magnificent wine that always delivers. Among the most expensive wines in Toro.
Alc: 15% Bottle number 044089. Deep Ruby red. Appealing, slightly heady aromas of sweet oak-induced spices: star anise, cinnamon, nutmeg followed by blackcurrant, date and cherryade. As aromas open further, there is Xmas cake, cassia bark and ripe damsons. The palate entry has a grippy powdery texture supporting bags of fruit: prune (or perhaps more sloe as they have a sourness), dry, dark chocolate (100% Lindt), raisin, Christmas pudding and liquorice bark overlaid with a liberal sprinkling of dry spices. Complex with excellent depth of flavour, this is a full-bodied wine with a long farewell. While the alcohol is generous and sometimes feels like pomace (press cake), there seem to be enough elements of fruits and structure to avoid it becoming too dominated. A touch of lively acid also helps push the wine along, maintaining some youth.

From the Vega Sicilia stable and while in a clearly 'modern' style this is not bland in any way - plenty of terroir and structure. Just beginning to drink but really too young - decanted of course, and at its best after a couple of days open. 90 for now - more to come.

2 hour decant, more expressive nose, black cherries, plums and licorice, on the palate it also seems fuller, lots of fine chalky tannins, again dark cherries in licor, licorice, dark chocolate with medium acidity and a long spicy finish. More complete than 2007 and the alcohol better intergrated Plenty of time for this yet.

Balance is the first thing that comes to mind about this wine. It has everything that a wine should have in taste - fruit, tannins and acidity. I wish it had more expressive nose, it is very shy, of red fruit and peppers. The finish is long, but little bitter, which I do not like that much. Overall this is very good wine, but needs more expressiveness to become great.

1 hour decant and paired with grilled Filet Mignon. Black in the glass with a dark fruit profile (blackberry, black currants & plum) on nose & palate with some charred wood and earthy / tobacco flavors on the nose. While a big wine (medium+ body), this wine has medium+ acids and good tannic structure with a long finish. 93+

Deep ruby red. Very closed in the nose and on the palate, but opened up beautiful after a few hours. Better on the second day. Ripe cherry and oak in the nose. Quite fruity. A "toasty" palate with cherry, oak and the sense of stone. Medium length, light tannins. Pure pleasure.

On the nose, I found brown spices, crushed black cherry, dark earth, rosemary and dried flowers. Soft textures offset by acid-driven black cherry, raspberry and savory spices greeted me on the palate. It finished long with penetrating fruit concentration, hints of gruff tannin and lingering spice. Intense!

What to do with these? It is still young and tanic, but also overly "hot" with alcohol on the taste throughout. I suppose it is just not my style at all since the community score and notes are generally favourable. I will keep the rest of what I have for a few years and hope. If need to drink, the best thing is to drink this on the cold side, 16-18 degrees centigrade makes it drinkable for my palate.

Dark red/purple. Dense nose of purple/red fruit and by day two a little more relaxation- bright red berries, spice. The palate has a melange of red fruits, made serious by a solid backdrop of tannin. Delicious and very drinkable today with a good decant but better in a few years.

I really didnt like the 2010 which i found inhospitable so I approached the 2008 with trepidation. However, this is a welcoming wine with a vibrant red fruit miniscus and a youthfull red berry palate. The mouth is full but not heavy and it ends on a pina colada high note.

Deep dark color strong and closed nose slightly alcoholic Dark fruits slighty tannic After 2 hours the wine showed its potential raspberry, plum, very subtle fruit Looking forward to trying again in a couple of years
Deep, dark, inky red with violet hue and clear in the glass. There was a considerable amount of gravelly sediment that remained in the bottle. It presented an extraordinarily beautiful and extravagant nose with blackberry, cassis, mulberry, and some really intriguing tart, citrus-like notes. Intense blackberry, mulberry on the palate with some charcoal. Very nicely integrated vanilla oak notes, as well. This one was almost perfect in the mouth. Velvety smooth but firm. Mouth-watering acidity that was not harsh. Perhaps a little too rich and alcoholic for my taste, but otherwise, a flawless and wonderful bottle. 95-96pts.
Young, fruity, accessible after an all day breather, commends itself and comes under the so many wines, so little time. A reason to go beyond the borders of US, France and Italy for sure.
Appearance: Clear wine with a deep and brooding ruby colour. Very little fading on the rim.
Nose: Clean nose with a Medium+ intensity. This wine is developing.
Brooding and heavy on the nose, a real density of ripe dark fruit with dark cherries, blackberries and plums all melting together. A streak of vanilla is not quite in balance with roasted coffee, leather and tobacco but still pleasant.
Palate: Dry Medium+ acidity High alcohol High tannins Medium+ intensity Full bodied Medium+ finish
Intense, fruity and spicy. The alcohol is a little more present on the palate but in fair balance with fruit, spice and liquorice. The tannins are big but smooth contributing a rich mouth-feel and a real intensity of flavour. The finish is extended and savoury with leather and tobacco prevailing. Despite the force of this wine, there is still an element of elegance and structure.
Excellent quality Tempranillo from Toro. Can be drank now but should last for another 2-8 years hitting it's full stride somewhere inbetween. At 35 euros a bottle - not cheap but still excellent QPR for a wine that is lovely now and could be outstanding in a few years time.
The first wine of the night. Breathed in the bottle for 2+ hours before sipping. Dark purple cheery cherries and a bit of smoke and spice on the nose. Fresh, ripe red fruits and subtle, but sufficient, tannins. Medium-bodied, think opposite of Meghan Trainor - enough about the bass, mostly treble. Bit grassy and peppery with some chocolate and coffee. At the moment, the balance a bit out of whack. Silky, elegant, fairly long finish. Great QPR!!!

Tuesday Night Double Blind <$40 (Bin 75): Opaque core with red rim; oak, black pepper, plush, smoky; strong oak, new French/American, dark fruit, currant, tobacco, menthol, ashy, slight jamminess, prune, bitterness on the finish; was on Ribera until I impulsively called modern St. Emilion, Toro makes sense; give this time.
We acquired for a reasonable price at a Vega-Sicilia Ex-Bodega auction. Happy to know a little bit about Spanish wines in a room where few others do :-) Breathed in the bottle for 2+ hours before sipping. Dark purple cheery cherries and a bit of smoke and spice on the nose. Fresh, ripe red fruits and subtle, but sufficient, tannins. Medium-bodied, think opposite of Meghan Trainor - enough about the bass, mostly treble. Silky, elegant, fairly long finish. Great value wine!!!
A nose with flowers (those which are in soap, but I don't know which soap). Solid, powerful and tannic palate with oak and dark ripe fruit. Too alcoholic in my opinion. To put it in other ways: The alcohol is too present and therefor too much.
Dark purple. Dark cherry, blackberries, violets, spices and chocolate on the nose. Medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced and rich. Long aftertaste. Drinks nicely but will keep for another decade.

Tasted blind. Dark ruby color turning violet at the rim with a silver lining. The notes are consistent with the first tasting, but this time the hints of effervescent mint, espresso and black berries are even more evident on the nose. Full-bodied palate with intense boysenberry, dark cherry, tobacco and a hint of cough syrup. Finishes long and lifted.
Dark ruby color with a profusely fragrant nose of dark berries, embers and toasted caramel. Intense all the way, full-bodied but no feeling of heaviness and fat. The texture is like velvet on the exterior yet attractively chewy on the inside. Flavors of ripe currant, cranberry, blueberry, vanilla, smoked meat find their way through this interesting blend of fruit, earth and vinification. Finishes long, lifted and full of character with hints of menthol, basil, cola and spice. A truly amazing wine from a region full of promise and personality. Drink now until 2028. 94+
Vega-Sicilia with Pablo Álvarez (Tenzing, Chicago): Rosewood color with violet rim. The nose started out restrained, though this expanded as the wine became emboldened with aeration. This was made in a more elegant style than is common for this region, with red berry flavors and a subtle spiciness transitioning into a long, tightly tannic finish. The oak on this was far more understated than on the 2009 Pintia, which was more forward and overt. I prefer the 2008, though I'd allow at least five more years in the cellar for this to bloom.

Vega Sicilia Dinner with Pablo Alvarez (Tenzing - Chicago IL): Lush start with lots of plum and black berries with a borderline jammy character. Dark ruby. Fruit forward nose packed with dark fruit, oaky/vanilla scents and some herbal notes in the back. The same goes in the palate; quite rich mid palate, grippy with high acidity. Needs some time to absorb better the oaky element but there is a lot of frsh fruit and this will probably improve.

This could be an off bottle based on my notes of a '09. Full body color with purple on the edges. Bouquet is quite muted and displays stewed black fruits and too much new oak. It's round and polished but lacks any other dimension. Also a but heavy on the sediment that caused many of these bottles to be recalled. A bit disappointed.

Deep colour, almost black, looks like Syrah. Expressive nose of raspberries with subtle notes of vanilla and spice added after time and some swirling. Very plush mouthfeel, full-bodied, unctuous with a slightly youthful feel. An initial tartness fades after about 30 minutes leaving blackberries and raspberries backed up minerals and a slight undertone of leather. Very well-balanced. Sophisticated and age-worthy. Would make for a great ringer in a Napa cult-cab tasting, at 1/3 or less the price!

Appearance: Clear, deep dark ruby with thick legs.
Nose: Clean, medium aroma intensity, aromas are numerous starting with smoked bitter cooking chocolate, rich dense concentrated wild strawberry scents, vanilla, charred cinnamon and a touch of nutmeg. Developing.
Palate: Dry, high acidity, medium (+) tannins, high alcohol, full bodied, medium (+) flavour intensity, flavours replicate the aromas in tangible measure, a mocha laden chocolate rich ripened strawberry essence bond with charred oak and cinammon/nutmeg spice.

Surprisingly light and spry in the mouth. The midpalate is about dark fruit and a touch of cassis, and just a bit of pruniness. Just as it gets interesting, though, it terminates in a burst of acid and fine tannin. This is a fine wine, but I'm not seeing the QPR at $50.

San Sebastian; 11/22/2013-11/24/2014 (San Sebastian, Spain): Tried it both from bottle and magnum with no decanting. We have to give it to it that it is a very crowd pleasing wine. With it's well round easygoing style, forward on the fruit, very ripe ( borderline burnt..) and with a fair amount of oak. Well made wine. But as with all wines of this style it fails to excite and become a centrepiece. 88-89 drink sooner than later we would say.

The 2008 Bodegas Pintia (Vega-Sicilia) Toro Pintia is medium purple in colour with a refreshing nose of black currants, cassis, cedar, slight mint and underlying oakiness. On the palate, an initial entry of enticingly energetic sweetness of currants, purple berries that soothes out to an underlying oak-cedar influence and continues to broaden out to a mouth-coating purple currant freshness and slight bitter chocolates. Tannins are pleasant and firm- definitely making its mark alongside the vibrancy and sweetness of the wine. Medium finish and acidity. Very palatable.

Masterclass with Pablo Alvarez, Vega Sicilia (Caveau Wine & Bar, Shaw): Alcohol :: 15% Purplish red. 10months in new 70% French and 30% American oak barrel. Sweet dark fruits, espresso, earth, tobacco and spice. Quite muscular on the palate with underlying lively acidity for the lift. The new wood tannin is pretty much present and a bit rustic but not overly so that should be derived from the new oak barrel. Dark chocolate, espresso aftertaste after the medium - long finish. Powerful and gripping. Need time. 88-89+

Very, very dark. Lots of legs in the glass. Smell of sea salt, licorice, wet soil, peppermint. In the mouth is creamy, alcoholic and lots of tannins. Tastes of rock, metal, chocolate, grass. Keep it in your cellar for the next 5 to 10 years.

Fantastic wine!

GROSSartig!

Ma dernière bouteille sera bue d'ici 1 an ou 2. 91

Loaded with tons of juicy black currents and black tea, full bodied and mouth filling with fine chalky tannins. High quality juice! Still quite young.

If need to drink, the best thing is to drink this on the cold side, 16-18 degrees centigrade makes it drinkable for my palate.

Deep dark luscious big bodied wine
Chalky, lots of mineralization, fruity leather, currents
Nice structure, we'll balanced. Will store well. Drinking well right now. It's in a very good space. Medium finish. The old world characteristics are there even though there are some new world nuances present.
VERY impressive!

I really didnt like the 2010 which i found inhospitable so I approached the 2008 with trepidation. However, this is a welcoming wine with a vibrant red fruit miniscus and a youthfull red berry palate. The mouth is full but not heavy and it ends on a pina colada high note.

95-96pts.

Palate:
Dry
Medium+ acidity
High alcohol
High tannins
Medium+ intensity
Full bodied
Medium+ finish
