Enjoyable; compared to other vintages, this strikes me as a bit deeper, richer, and with more sweet oak liqour. Still more elegant than most, but a softness that could be due to vintage or time in bottle.

I enjoyed my previous bottles in 2020, but this bottle was different. It did not taste like zinfandel. Mostly tasteless with a lack of fruit and an awful after taste.
This is the best bottle of a 3 case lot, The flavors have integrated nicely and the wine is balanced. I've been mildly disappointed with the previous tastings of 17 bottles. This must been why the 93 score was given by WS. Time to drink up!

Solid zin from a trusted stable. Very well rounded zin with notes of dark berries, pepper spice, and wood. Year after year wines from this winery are consistent and don’t disappoint. Although not memorable, certainly reliable. Good buy for the money. WS 93 pts is generous. Nonetheless, good everyday wine for the price.

The color was dark ruby opaque with dead slow legs. On the nose bright raspberry, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, spices and cranberry. On the raspberr, black cherry cranberry and oak. The finish was closed knit and a little tight upon opening drying, ash. For me the pinnacle of this wine was the 2007,followed by the 2004 and 2002. Still a great value and intro to Zinfandel 101.

Core of blackberry jam but with a decent amount of acid too. Better than I expected; works really well with spicy tomato sauce. There are many wines I’d rather have for this price but this is not my varietal in general; if you’re looking for a well balanced (as opposed to flabby or syrupy) Zin to have with food this is a good choice. ~5/10

Good solid Zin year after year. Definitely jammy and fruit forward. Nice notes of pepper on the finish. Extremely friendly with smoked meats which is what we paired this with. 5 Star QPR.

We had this over 3 nights (thanks to the Coravin): twice with ribs and once with pizza. Good red fruit, cherry, spice, cloves. Probably better with 1-2 years of bottle age. Good value for $19.

This is a serious Zin but it needs at least an hour of decanting or you will be disappointed. I disagree with WS description of jammy but the silky tannins descriptor is right on.
I think this is a good summer alternative to a Cab. It has plenty of depth, tannin and to a much lesser extent complexity to serve with grilled meats. All through the meal the wine improved. We fortunately have several bottles because it really needs more aging. Definitely not your typical fruit bomb zin that "jammy" implies. A terrific value.

Spicy bouquet: cinnamon, cloves, mixed peppercorns, sweet tobacco, dark berries. Full bodied, elegant and velvety; with berry compote, vanilla, plums, elderberry, mocha and balsamic reduction. Long and smoky finish, with chocolate tannins and fresh acidity.

Agreeing with the general vibe on this. For the price point this Zin still delivers a lot. Not the killer depth from earlier vintages, little hot and sweet, but still young and a better Zin than the masses of funny labeled Zins in store shelves.

It's remarkable that Seghesio keeps pumping this Zin out year after year with no lapse in quality and no appreciable change in price. Still $20 at my local shop, and featuring aromas and flavors of blackberry, ripe strawberry, bramble and spice. Oak emerges with more air time, but never quite becomes intrusive. Lush, versatile, and delicious.

Lots is blueberry and strawberry notes. Nice pepper and tobacco notes dancing on the tongue. The only negative is the boozyness is pretty high which is distracting from the great flavor they have developed.

This was a regular for many years until I discovered the Zins of Carlisle and Bedrock. In the background I think this winery was purchased by one of the monsters a few years back. Still a solid bottle but the tannins and alcohol aren't fully integrated which might just mean it needs another year or two in the cellar.

Bought at my local big box liquor store for $17.99 about 9 months ago. Opened as a PnP by my wife last night. Nice nose of blackberries, some cherry, bramble. On the palate, similar fruit notes with a menthol/slightly medicinal note that's not unpleasant. No noticeable tannins or acidity. Dark, medium bodied, perfectly balanced, no heat. I've had many of Seghesio's single vineyard zins and actually prefer this. It used to be fairly easy to find solid zins in this price range, but this is the last man standing. Recommended.

Tart cherry/cranberry nose, big mouthfeel, slightly tannic, blackberry flavors with some vanilla, after getting some air some cranberry cones out, not tart, low acidity. In the middle between a light and fruity zin and a big and bold one.

Nose: Pronounced strawberry and peach preserves, white pepper and bramble/garrique creep in from the sides. Lush projection.
Mouth: Sweet, smooth strawberry and peach preserve sound off against a very light blackberry and rhubarb. Finish is very easy, some tartness from the fruit lingering against light tannins, akin to a barely oversteeped tea. Very pure and clean, if a little sweet overall.
Overall: This is cute, it feels like a solid local house wine. Very feminine on the palate. Very pure and very fruit forward with little left over after the fact. Finish is very one-dimensional. Picture perfect Zin in that Sonoma/Lodi style, just wish for some more complexity.
One of the most "ordinary" efforts I have ever tasted from Seghesio. This is a good wine, no question. Many will love it. However, having tasted both their regular and special bottlings for years, this was the probably the least complex / interesting one. Surprised by WS 93.

Pouring this from the bottle to the glass, my wife noticed the aroma from a few feet away. This is a wonderful wine, on the nose and on the tongue. This is why I love wine. Satisfying on so many levels. Glycerol and just so slightly sweet which I look for in a Zin. Other reviewers have commented on a lack of complexity, but it's sufficiently complex for me because I value wines that make me want to swill the wine inside my mouth, or take a deep, lingering draught of wine goodness. The 2016 Seghesio Sonoma County Zinfandel makes me smile. I'm going to buy more of this vintage and future vintages.

Tasty! Ruby. Strawberry and pepper nose with some chalk, tearing indicates alcohol. Bold fruit body. Cooked strawberry jam and red cherry on palate with pepper and oak. Chalk confirmed with tasting but dissipated as decanted. Needed a bit to loosen up, even good the second day. Fruit forward, medium tannins late.

Second bottle from a case purchase. First bottle six months ago was so non-descript that I didn't bother to post a note. This one was much better. They produce enormous quantities of this, and there is obviously a considerable amount of bottle variation - clearly evident by the widely varying (82-92) scores here. This one was the Seghesio Sonoma County Zin that I know and was expecting. Lots of delicious plum, cherry and boysenberry fruit, with good depth and concentration. Hints of cracked pepper and bramble linger on the long fruity finish. Delicious. Could easily improve further over the next year or two, as the fruit fades a bit and secondary flavors more fully emerge. Glad to have ten bottles remaining. 50+5+12+16+7=90

We picked up this Zin on recommendation of Lettie Teague. A beautiful deep violet color, the nose is a pronounced dark fruit, most reminiscent of blackberry. The flavor is reflective of the nose. Not complex but very pleasant. Excellent balance of tannins and fruit, we doubt it will last another five years. Lettie is correct about the wine. An excellent bargain Zin. Drink up.

Seghesio is a very well-known winery in the US, dating all the way to 1895. Today, it’s easily placed among the top 10 producers of Zinfandel with some of the oldest vineyards in the game. Regarding the region, Sonoma County is not necessarily an indication of quality. It points out that grapes were picked from different AVAs, in this case a combination of Alexander Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Even though it states ‘Zinfandel’, traces of Petit Sirah are added to provide color and structure.
Damn, this was a tough blow, especially after hearing about and tasting many good examples of this fine establishment. Sweet, almost superficial aromas of blueberry, cotton candy and caramelised cloves, with some rubbery hints. Like putting a condom on a plum. No, you never did that? Ok, that’s just me then. It’s like that high school wine you thought was premium because it was $20 instead of your 7-dollar usual. Thick extract and fiery alcohol levels tiring out the whole structure. Take a load off, Seghy.
Deep ruby-garnet, barely translucent, viscous @14.8% abv. Aromas of bramble, licorice, bayleave, dark chocolate and ......pepper. Dry-off-dry, medium(-) acidity, medium(-) tannin, medium(+)-high alcohol and medium(+) body. Palate of black fruits, blueberry jam, dark cherry, chocolate, and blue plums and sweet spice. Rich, velvety mouthfeel, and despite its evident power elegant and balanced. Very good length with intriguing bitter-sweet finish.
Really, Seghesio never disappoints me.

Dark garnet. Medium body. Berries on the nose with a little earthiness to it. Some moments it smells floral, sweet, and great - Others, not so much; more like moss and mushrooms. It leads with a sweet and tangy red fruit caused by some noticeable acidity, followed by some pleasant spice and a little heat. Then some young, bitter tannins come in and diminish the wine. If the tannins were in check , I think this wine would be a winner.

Color: Dark ruby with tinges of purple with moderate to fast legs. On the nose wild berries and raspberries explode all over. Great classic Sonoma Zinfandel nose. The palate is loaded with raspberries, bramble berry and a wonderful little zing. The finish comes in wave after wave of gorgeous fruit with great balanced acids. Damn, their blends are consistent as hell. Try with Bang Bang shrimp, classic BBQ brisket or smoked sausages.

From 375ml. This is still quite young, to my palate. Lots of plush purple fruit and creamy oak that needs to settle down and integrate still. Not surprisingly, the last glass, after two hours of air, was the best. Hold.

Inky black to blood red rim. Black cherry candy on the nose. Super sweet with some vanilla oakiness. Very light up front, all fruit. Tannin develops late but envelopes nicely. Candy coating-still very sweet. Short, cool finish. Definitely not for everyone, but I quite like it.

A: Deep purple with high viscosity N: Medium (+) intensity. Chocolate, cassis jam, tobacco, baking spice. P: Dry, medium (+) acid, tannin, intensity and finish. Full body and high alcohol. C: Good quality, drink up
Guesses: I had this as a Cab Sav owing to the cassis element that dominated here.
Mistakes: Missed the millerandage..this seemed entirely ripe. Did not detect any peach reserve at all. No idea what i would have done differently to arrive a the correct answer. Worrying.

Clear, medium (+) ruby with a purple hue. Apparently, this has a little Petite Sirah added to the mix. The nose is clean, of medium (+) to pronounced intensity, with ripe blackberry jam, candied violets, blueberries, roasted herbs, mocha, cinnamon, vanilla. The nose is developing. The palate is dry, but with lots of sweet fruit at the fore-front. This vintage is a little riper and plusher than others, with medium acidity and tannins and high alcohol (14.8%). It is full-bodied and smooth on the palate, with medium (+) flavor intensity and rich, jammy fruit, consistent with the nose. The finish is medium (+) in length, with a touch of bitter licorice which helps offset the sweet fruit. I am a big fan of this producer and of big Zins, but I must admit that this wine seems a little unbalanced towards the sweet and plush and alcoholic end of the spectrum. The sugar and hot alcohol are tiring on the palate and make it difficult to get through the bottle (not usually a problem). Drink now, not intended for aging. Much as I like this wine, I cannot conceive of giving it a 93 (like WS).
Ruby colored in the glass. Nose of raspberry, blackberry and spices. Palate confirms the nose with grippy tannins on the finish. Consistently good year after year and at Costco's price hard to beat.

Consistent as ever. Blackberry jam, currants, spices, and grape flavored licorice aromas. Not overdone or over extracted, just tasty, fruity balance and richness, with an amply dense mid palate that gains brambly persistence on the smooth finish.

Bright and very fruit forward with tons of cherry, plum, spice and licorice that linger on and on. While bold, it isn’t as heavy as past vintages. The complexity deepens with every sip. Excellent on its own; outstanding with a hearty meal. Another stunner from Seghesio at an unbeatable price.

Day 1: Fruit forward but not a lot of heat which you typically find on under $25 zinfandel and sometimes over that mark. Bursting with blackberries, ripe plums, Bing cherries and smoke. Quite balanced and nice acidity. A solid effort. 91 points Day 2: Very similar to day 1 and has not lost any of the gorgeous fruit. Picks up some nice perfume qualities and subtle spices. This is a great barbeque wine. Still 91 points. Day 3: Still singing. Just a nice balanced wine which you don't find often with Zinfandel at any price point. Back up the truck for a six pack for summer barbeques. 91 points. Recommendation: Drink right now on a pop and pour or cellar up to 3/5 years. Excellent value.

Pale ruby. Translucent.
89.

We picked up this Zin on recommendation of Lettie Teague. A beautiful deep violet color, the nose is a pronounced dark fruit, most reminiscent of blackberry. The flavor is reflective of the nose.

I think SWADE's 5/17 review captures it perfectly. Great wine at a great price. I would add, last glass was still good on day 3.

Really good. Solid structure almost Stoney. A little short on the nose but I think with time it will reveal some real beauty.

Bubbling with black fruit aromas. Blackberry jam, bramble and baking spice complicate the palate. Clean, plus finish. Medium, plus body. Ready for the next barbecue or to sit in the que for a few. My 12th year in a row reviewing this wine. This is a consistent winner. 92

This is a good Sonoma Zinfandel which presents blackberry, black currants, and red licorice with good acidity and fine tannins.
Its not jammy like warmer climate Zinfandels, but it’s a bit light across the mid palate and tight on the back end with a short finish.
Better on day 2...picks up some weight and improves balance.

This year has been very consistent. Excellent structure and balance this year with the usual upfront zinfandel fruit.

Agree with 3daywinereview - Day 1 is muted, Day 2 much more open with fruit and spice shining through... will see what Day 3 brings. Was apprehensive about this brand/wine, but it has surprised and delighted. A bit heavy on the alcohol though...

Day 1: Fruit forward but not a lot of heat which you typically find on under $25 zinfandel and sometimes over that mark. Bursting with blackberries, ripe plums, Bing cherries and smoke. Quite balanced and nice acidity. A solid effort. 91 points
Day 2: Very similar to day 1 and has not lost any of the gorgeous fruit.
