This was... a little boring. Not concentrated enough to be jammy, very soft, not complex, but tasty and disappeared quickly without particularly making its presence felt. Expected better from Ridge really - the 2016 Geyser is so much more compelling.

Good soft-ish fruit. Baking spices plus Ridge bergamot. Drinking great right now and for another 3-5 years. Good, but not up to the Geyserville of the same vintage.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry, cherry and light toast. It tastes like cherry. The body is light/medium. The wine has narrow texture. The wine finishes short. The wine has low acidity.

Tried a half glass upon opening which as expected was closed to the max. 16 hours open later this was still the case, so I decanted for 5 hours. It still took another hour or more in the glass to open up. Beautiful clarity in appearance. Very wild in fruit profile on nose and palette. Mega structure, no rush at all. But I feel it’s a little dilute compared to what I was expecting based on other cellartracker notes and other experience or Ridge. I wonder if this bottle was in a state of emo black nail varnish wearing adolescence. The Ridge website says that it is in its window. Edit: after about 7 hours it’s come around even further. A little more fruit and concentration. Added a point

1st night was relatively slight but enjoyable. Strong sense of matchsticks. 2nd night was much better. Nose of figs, musk and velvet cushions (they don't have a smell but this makes me think of them). Slightly sweet mouth of rhubarb, nettles and blackberries. Nice chewy texture. Finish still quite tannic of strawberry cheesecake with excellent acid ending on a dry note. Didn't rate this much on the 1st night but the 2nd night...what a wine. I imagine that this could do with a few more years of cellaring.

A fair amount of volatility coming off of this when I popped the cork. Didn't notice that in earlier bottles. Aside from that, red fruit - raspberry and strawberry on the nose. Dried herbs and just a little sweet oak and chocolate. Raspberry and sour cherry on the palate. Acid on the high side. Quite dry, although salty food brings out the sweetness. A little bit of smoke and some spice. Soft tannins. The acid provides the backbone. I don't think this is going to develop much more. Good to go now.

Opened 2 hours. Trying after finishing a Barolo which I know wouldn’t be enough for the group. On the nose: A bit strange and pungent but I think what it is is concentrated berry liquor. On the palate : Rich blackberry, Blueberry and raspberry. Got to say the nose had me worried but the taste is very good. The finish could be longer but the initial intensity of fruit is very pleasing.

Medium/darker ruby/purple color. Slightly restrained, but showing nice pure fruit of dark plum and blueberries, cassis, some red fruit too, sweet spices, some herbal notes too. It's medium-full bodied, has nice medium acidity and some medium+ very silky tannin. Good length. Polished, silky and seamless, this will go really well with anything BBQ'd.

Deep and dark fruit on the nose. On the palette a bit astringent. Reminded me of Northern Rhone. Peppery, black cherry. Still tightly wound. Would be interesting to taste this wine again in 7 to 10 years. The tannins are refined but insistent. I think it's good value if you can wait.

The CT reviews on this wine have been all over the board, so I was glad to finally have an opportunity to taste it. I agree with those who think this vintage is not as impressive as others. It is a fine example of Dry Creek Valley zin, just lacking some of the oomph and complexity of prior years. I would put this on the level of the Three Valley bottlings I've tasted over the years.
Update 10/19/18: Opened a second bottle of this and had the exact same impression as before. The wine is good but not particularly special, which is a first for East Bench in my experience.
Tasty bright fruit, a potpourri of dark flavors and spicy notes, elegant, refined, and well made, but just lacking pizzazz for me. I don't do that well with "elegant," especially in zins. Unfavorable QPR for my palate.
This vintage is a step behind the '14. This one is still very good but has less depth. The '16 shows a very nice pure Zinfandel character with just enough tannin to keep it interesting. There is a touch of oak that is identifiable yet which I'm sure will integrate easily with a few years in bottle. Ridge seems to be turning this vineyard into a solid program. Personally I wish they would add a couple other varieties to make more complete wines but as a pure Zin showcase this one is turning out some nice wines.
