2000 Château Latour à Pomerol

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (73) Avg Score: 92.6 points

  • A touch of amber hue and mainly dark ruby colour, beautiful transparency! Nose of French oak barrique, ripe, sweet fruits, a little bit of spiciness, and a gentle touch of leather. The palate is rich and dense, rather youthful and quite meaty, full of substance, long finish! Ready to drink but not yet ready to shine! Needs a decade of cellaring, with a very promising future!

    A delicious treat

  • Low level TCA. It's fine initially, quite fragrant actually, but it gets worse very quickly. Raw and rough.

  • Fully developed, the wine opens with cocoa-dusted roses, black raspberries, truffle, and herbal notes. With air, the wine develops strong mint notes. Medium-bodied, soft, easy to drink, with a dusty edge to the sweet red fruits, licorice, wet earth, green, leafy herbs, olives and wild cherries in the soft, fresh finish. This is at the peak of maturity, there is no reason to hesitate and not open a bottle, if you have any. Drink from 2023-2028.

  • Opened and poured through a fine-mesh filter to remove the very light sediments. Aerated in a large decanter to help oxidation. Dark purple with no noticeable bricking. Sampled from a vintner glass. Well integrated and wonderful mouthfeel after 15 minutes in the decanter. Hreat mouthfeel and weight, with the appropriate and expected response from Latour’s Pomerol. I agree with Jeff Leve that this vintage is at ot almost at full maturity and that, based on this bottle and the other two I’ve consumed in the past 5 years, that thus wine should remain at this pkateau for a goid bit. Not sure if I really buy the ending “drinking date” above. I recommend opening a bottle now, even if you only have 1. Enjoy.

  • Tastes like it’s in its peak maturity window, opened up nicely with 30-45 minutes of air. Soft and ripe fruit, elegant and pretty. Lacks a bit of depth, but very enjoyable. I increased my score from 93 to 94 -- after 2 hours of air this gained a bit of richness for sure. Definitely decant for 1-2 hours if opening anytime soon.

  • Medium-bodied, soft, elegant, refined and silky expression of ripe cherries, plums, truffle and chocolate. This is probably close to full maturity, though there is no hurry to drink it.

  • 12 Blind Wines in Charlotte (Charlotte, NC): Slow-Ox for ~3.5 hours before sampling. Beautiful rustic nose -- woodsy, sultry, hints of cherry and green pepper. Medium+ body with wonderfully resolved tannins on the mouthfeel with plenty of structure. Notes of black currant, plums, and smoke fill your palate with rich complex flavors followed by a savory long finish. A fabulous wine with life left in the bottle but likely on the back-half of peak -- definitely a drink now wine. Overwhelming WOTN. 4 votes WOTN. 8 of 12 people had it in their Top 3 on the night -- no other wine garnered more than four Top 3 votes. 17pts overall.

  • Decant which was unnecessary. The last glass faded out a bit. But it was a great performance nevertheless. Everything is integrated wonderfully at this point. No really sharp edges. Which is also why I doesn’t rate it higher. Drink up.

  • A blend of Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques (30-50% new). Annual production approximately 35,000 bottles. 13% alcohol.

Luminous, moderately translucent and still surprisingly youthful dark ruby color. Quite intense, savory and somewhat leafy nose with quite classic and attractive aromas of herbaceous bell pepper, some tobacco, light autumnal notes of damp leaves and forest floor, light fruity notes of fresh blackberries, a hint of toasty yet dry and savory oak spice and a touch of ripe redcurrant. Contrasting the dry and rather herbaceous, green-toned nose, the wine turns out to be surprisingly ripe, quite sweet-toned and somewhat concentrated on the palate with a medium body and rich flavors of fresh red cherries, blood, some crunchy redcurrants, a little bit of toasty oak and sweet mocha character, light roasted bell pepper tones, a hint of tobacco and a touch of peppery spice. The overall feel is silky smooth and quite supple, yet not without structure, thanks to the high acidity and still rather firm and moderately grippy tannins. The finish is dry, supple and gently grippy with rich, layered flavors of roasted bell pepper, ripe blackcurrant, some peppery spice, a little bit of crunchy redcurrant, light sweet notes of toasty oak spice and chocolatey mocha character and a hint of juicy dark fruit.

This wine turned out to be a wine of contrasts: it shows wonderfully classic and moderately herbaceous nose, yet on the palate the wine turns out to be surprisingly ripe, sweet-toned and modern with its somewhat prominent oak influence. Although the wine lacks the classic freshness and crunch I enjoy in a good claret, the wine shows still good balance and very nice structure. Although a bit too polished and modern for my taste, the wine shows good promise for future development: the overall impression is that of a youthful wine, not a Pomerol clocking at 20 years of age, and seeing how the wine was almost identical to the bottle I had 5 years ago, it's quite obvious that there's still tons of room for future improvement, not only in the firm structure, but also in the lush, polished fruit and quite prominent mocha oak. Most likely the wine will continue to improve at least for another decade, if not two, and then keep well for much longer. No hurries with this one; expect the score to go up with age.

  • Seemed a little past it's prime as a deep Bordeaux. Much lighter than I expected.
    But still very nice

  • Opaque dark garnet hue. Nose of savory black currant, a tiny bit of green (so satisfying), hyacinth, deep soil, graphite, menthol. Elegant yet muscular layers of deep-reaching currant, smoky plum, iodine, and hints of mocha on the satin-textured palate. Smoothed tannin and ample acidity. Long, harmonious finish of dark plummy fruit and slow, earthen grip. Vigor and stylish grace, an excellent combination.

  • A really terrific wine. Shows medium red crimson brick in the glass. Excellent right bank nose with earthy elements of charcoal, forest floor, and tobacco, wrapped in an opulent, rich texture. Tannins are super polished right now, providing just the right backdrop. Secondary elements are still earthy, not fruity, with a bit of smoke and perhaps a bit of dark chocolate on the finish. I do disagree, however, with some of the other reviews that imply this still needs to age - this is really in its peak drinking window right now. Maybe five more years but ten more is not going to make this wine better - the tannins are just not there now. Overall, a wonderful wine, furthers my belief that Moueix can almost do no wrong.

  • Classic Pomerol profile in every respect, mature and lively, well balanced, everything in place, just lacks some luxurious richness for a higher score. Ready, but with time in hand - drink now until 2025/30.

  • I agree with Jeff Leve, but beware: this is not ready, and like so many 2000s it is taking its time.... Wonderful promise, an atypically big Latour a Pomerol, and it will be sumptuous. For me it is a shame to drink it now. What a fascinating vintage this is.

  • VEO Bordeaux Right Bank 1998, 2000 and 2001 (Restaurant Zoldering Amsterdam): In tough competition tonight but still standing. Earth, iron, iodine and dark fruits in the nose. Full bodied, concentrated and true-to-type. Classic and delicious Pomerol.

  • I love how this wine is showing. It's silky, soft, elegant, fresh and loaded with cocoa dusted, cherries, plums, mushroom and flowers. Medium/full bodied, elegant and silky on the palate, this mature Pomerol delivers the goods.

  • Popped and poured after being inspired by a K&L BDX tasting this afternoon. This is a dark red wine with some mild sediment at the end of the bottle — no affirmative need to decant, but it won’t hurt. On the nose, I get a musty chest, earth, mushrooms, lead, and iodine. In the mouth, this has loads of sweet red fruit, all carrying through to a bright and chewy finish of cedar and freshly-picked mint. Overall, this is a delicious wine and in a great spot now. I’m glad I opened this evening. 93 points.

  • Super wine! Deep rich garnet colour. Nose full of tradional pomerol notes berries and pencil shavings. Full rich mouth feel with the merlot dominating but then plenty of complexity and length to balance the sweetness. The wine is at peak but will probably last a long time.

  • Brought to a restaurant for corkage but decanters were all in use. Left in glass as long as possible, but would have liked longer. The limited airtime did blow off some stinky notes. Details are fuzzy 24 hours later but I recall a nice balance between earth and secondary notes and red fruit. This is young with a good future but is definitely in the drinking window.

  • Deep opaque purple.
Nose of ripe plums and leather.
Put on weight in 2hrs of oxidation.

Blueberry/plum compote, dark chocolate, saddle leather, and Rutherford Dust.
[Ok: I suppose it's Rive Drôite dust, but I'm no dust connoiseur. Just reading from notes.]

A black truffle, savory damp earth component builds with the blueberry pie element on the palate over dinner. Some red fruits, but we found the blueberry jam uncanny this showing.

    Delicious.
[Ran out before done eating. Thank god we were at the Big 4, where Q glasses avail..]

Bought six more. No hurry. A beast.

  • This wine was the Star of the night for my Wine Tasting Group. It features a full body, with that typical "texture" of Merlot, but with plenty of flavors. Tannins are well developed and integrated with the texture. Light notes of fruits, earth and leather. Very long finish. Matched perfectly with a Mushroom filled pasta. Curiously it did not change at all in the glass over a period of one-hour wich leads me to believe it won't benefit for further cellaring and should be drank now.

  • this bottle (750) still needed another 5-7 years.
Highly aromatic, deep merlot plums and anise, the nose was gorgeous, but the palate is still a little tight. Lots of fruit left, and it will win the battle against the tannin for sure, but I would honestly leave another 5-7 years judging on this example. Aside from that, this is a classic and thoroughly enjoyable Pomerol.

  • Flott flaske!

  • Michael Schuster Fine Wine Course Day 3 (Headspace, Hatton Gardens, London): Deep garnet, clear bright, rim also garnet. Ripe red fruit, plum, prune, raisin fruit, clove, game, truffle, tobacco. Developing. Rich but elegant dry palate, fleshy, full body, dense, medium acidity, medium ripe chalky tannins, medium (+) finish. Very good quality but still young, will certainly develop further over next ten years.

  • I like the wine. I really like this style, with its nose of roses, hints of truffle, smoke, cherries and burning wood. The soft, silky texture really hits the spot. If only the wine were a bit more concentrated, this would be a stunner. At close to 17, this is in the sweet spot. You can age it for a few more years, but it's not necessary. Just pop, pour and enjoy.

  • from magnum: silky smooth, sweet tannins. Blackberry and plum, lifted by floral top notes. Long and very elegant. In this format, could use another 2-3 years, but I would think in 750's the wine is "a point"
    Lovely wine.

  • A blend of Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). Aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques (30-50% new). Annual production approximately 35,000 bottles. 13% alcohol.

Dark, concentrated and relatively opaque black cherry color that still retains a hint of youthful purple even at 15 years of age. The nose feels quite angular and savory with aromas of herbal greenness, herbaceous bell pepper, fresh blackcurrants, crunchy and tart red berries, some almost unripe leafy tones and an oaky hint of cocoa. Contrasting the lean, green-toned nose, the wine is surprisingly big, ripe and concentrated on the palate with bold flavors of juicy dark berries, chocolatey oak, ripe black cherries, some licorice tones, a little bit of peppery spice, a hint of extracted woody bitterness and a touch of mocha. The wine feels surprisingly structured with its bright, high acidity and still firm and moderately grippy tannins, yet the overall feel is very silky, smooth and polished with general softness due to the richness of supple, ripe fruit. The finish is long, gently grippy and quite nuanced with moderately developed flavors of dark forest fruits and succulent plums, some savory oak spice, a little bit of sweet mocha, light leathery tones and a hint of salt-cured beef.

Despite its lean, green-toned and savory nose, the wine turns out to be very ripe, supple and polished on the palate with lots of round, somewhat sweet-toned oak notes and juicy dark fruit. The thing that manages to redeem the wine is its firm and still enjoyably muscular structure: otherwise it would've just come across as too rich and overdone - stylistically almost a crowdpleaser - in its rich, sweet fruit and relatively noticeable oak character. Even at 15 years of age the wine feels a bit too modern to my taste, but at least its youthful character and firm structure hold the promise of further development: maybe with enough age the wine will lose its baby fat and integrate the oak tones better with fruit. Now the wine is good, but nothing that would get me particularly excited. Feels overpriced for the style at 84,50€.

  • Decanted and drank over 4 hours. Even to the end this was pretty reserved on the nose giving only hints of rasberries, some black fruit and a bit of violet. The palate was incredibly soft and light, very silky. More red fruits and flowers with some minerals and a bit of green. Medium plus finish. Shallower than expected on the midpalate but nice.

  • This was the 7th bottle of the night and taste buds are a bit worn out, so rating could be a bit off.

In decanter for 1 hour, initially Left bank aromatics, pauliiac like even, but then the Merlot became more noticible. Drinking fairly well now but felt this could benefit from more time in the cellar. Palate smooth and soft, slight grip on tongue as the night wore on, 2nd hour was better.

  • One of the first 2000s that's started to emerge from my cellar. I let it breathe in the decanter for 90 minutes before pouring the first glass. Solid purple, phenomenal nose of cut grass, cedar, rasberries and the wine really opened up and spread its wings over the next 2 1/2 hours. Glad I bought a case.

  • Drank on New Year's Day!
Dark body with brilliant ruby rim. Archetypical claret. What one would expect with a 10 year old Pomerol. Some fine sediments or floc visible but not apparent in the mouth.

Nose was closed on opening of bottle. Tight. Little in the way of bouquet. Some vegetal notes, oak vanilla and black fruits. Really not much. Trying harder only gets you a nose full of alcohol. No decanter so swirled in large Bordeaux glass and hoped for the best. Wine really started to unwind itself after an hour, releasing a seductive mustiness of mild fruits, flinty minerals, vanilla, ink, earth. Friend suggested some fast dissipating euro-funk (kind of like a clean toilet bowl) but I really like this aspect of the wine. Wine is not corked!

Medium bodied and smooth. Some grip on sides of tongue. On first pour, nothing much, dried tea leaves finish and silver (e.g. licking silverware taste) on the tongue. Things got going after the wine was left to breathe for more than an hour with the silver getting more pronounced. Acid came forward which gave some brightness to a worrying dull start. Flavours similar to nose except for the funk which only exists on the nose. Longer finish than expected. Lovely!

Suggest to drink at higher than regular serving temperature. Perhaps even at room temperature. It really highlights the acid and give balance plus open up the wine. I think this wine is ready to drink if you are going to put in effort to coaxed this wine out of the bottle and it will seduce you! I'm definitely getting a full case of this vintage. I do not know if it will improve with age.

  • The wine was a little less successful than expected - probably 5 years too soon. My modern point of reference for Latour a Pomerol is the 2001 vintage, which is more lush, more forward, more mature, and one that gains complexity and beauty in the glass. The 2000 proved to be something of a hired chaperone - strict, more unyielding, and a little closed minded. The depth of fruit was wrapped in a tight tannic structure that did not unwind, even with 3 hours in the decanter. This is a big Pomerol, powerful and in no mood to fool around yet.

  • Latour a Pomerol Vertical tasting (FOF): Dark red color and still with a purple hue. Delicious aromas of blackcurrant, scorched earth and iron in a warm, sweet and inviting mixture. Good concentration of the taste with full-bodied sweet and juicy fruit. On the finish it has notes of dark licorice, cigarbox, iron and marzipan. Very pure and refined, in superb balance where the fruit stretches onto the long finish. Seems very well made, almost polished with the smooth mouthfeel, but one can feel the powerful acidic backbone lurking underneath.

  • Wonderful wine that builds weight as it stands in the glass -- great soft red fruit complimented by a toasty oak flavor that delivers a great mouthfeel and wonderful, long finish of chewy tannins. I suspect this wine will continue to age well and excited to try another bottle in a year or so.
