1953 Dinner: Milestone Birthday (Gemma Fish + Oyster): Twice in one year and this time out of magnum! What an absolute treat! This was drinking incredibly well. It’s a real contender for WOTY. There’s just a lovely beauty to the wine with this amount of age. Much lighter in style. Absolutely stunning. The red fruits just poking through. I am enchanted by it.

Wine Workshop: Chateau Margaux (Gabriel Kreuther): Hands down wine of the night and really quite impressive all around. This is a wine I’d love to see again although I doubt there’s so many around and few that were just in this perfect spot. It was opened and poured and I savored mine throughout the meal. Even with some hours in the glass still lovely. There’s a crispness and elegance and tartness and yet great red fruits and quite bright and fresh and classic. It is perhaps why some might think of Margaux as the ‘Chambolle of Bordeaux’ if you feel that you need to relate everything to Burgundy (which these days I suppose most wine ppl do as that’s what everyone is chasing). Still, this was just perfect. While I think David did the tasting right given what he was working with it is always a bit difficult when you find that the best wine of the night is the first because everything was trying and not quite living up to this one.

Garnet color in the glass, dusty looking with a little bricking. Nose is vegetal with added notes of eucalyptus and leather. Flavors or based on iron, tart red berries and tart cranberries. Tart acidity, resolved tannin, medium bodied. Drink now.

Opened and let breathe in the bottle for a couple hours. Fill was about 3/4 inch below shoulder. Color was brown with a some red. Cinnamon and spice on the nose. Good amount of fruit on the palate that developed more richness over the next hour or two. Palate of plum and cranberry/raisin. Fun experience to have been able to enjoy this special wine.

A round and voluptuous wine. I like my Bordeaux very old but this one is past it's prime. Smooth and integrated, dried fruits, earth, and light hints of tobacco and violets. It is just faded and lacked substance on the mid-palate. No follow through. As Broadbent would say this one is a faded beauty. Part of the problem is that we had an 1869 Palmer, a 1928 Brane Cantenac, a 1945 Beychevelle, and a 1949 Haut Brion before this and all were head and shoulders better.

Mid shoulder and cellared since release. Deep amber purple color. Revolving nose of plum, raspberry jam, elderflower, fig, saffron, anise, tomato, tobacco, pepper, sourdough, caramel, chocolate, smoke, dill, vanilla and tea. Clean palate in multiple waves with a fresh and lengthy backward finish. Clearly a magnificent wine but probably in the later window of its peak; drink up! 97

Another "last bottle". This was particularly good. A quick decant for sediment, and it improved over the couple of hours as we drank a vertical of Margaux. Soft and gorgeous.

Smoke, tobacco, forest floor, tobacco, thyme and red plums play nicely with all the truffle nuances in the nose. The wine is full bodied, soft, and has depth, along with concentration, leaving you with beautiful, sweet, earthy, tobacco smoke. Young for its age, no decanting is needed, just pop and pour. This is what great, fully mature is all about!

From a clearly authentic bottle with a high shoulder fill, this wine had a red center and pale, tawny rims. The medium intensity nose displayed caramel, cherries, carob, Cuban cigar, malt, honey, minerals, and a touch of oxidation.
In the mouth, this wine was silky and sublime and was so well integrated it was impossible to discern each element (tannin, acidity, fruit, etc.) separately. It was ripe and sweet but light bodied, almost like a Burgundy. The glycerol richness was surprising for such a mature wine. It had gorgeous balance and very good length despite being very light weight on the palate. As indicated by the flavors noted above, the main issue with this wine was its advanced physical age.
The notes on this wine have been all over the map. I am sure a lot of this is due to bottle variation and differences in how the bottles were stored over the years. However, this also seemed to be a wine that would naturally strike controversy. It might be stunning if you appreciate ethereal old wines but dead as a door nail if you prefer more primary flavors.
This bottle was clearly on the down slope. My guess is that even a perfectly stored large format bottle should be consumed ASAP. However, do not hesitate to give it a couple hours in the decanter to work its way out of its initial funk.

Despite a largely empty and slightly off nose, the palate rebounded well. Certainly not the best bottle but at least the palate offered some classic Margaux notes, albeit starting to fade.

When my first child was born 40 years ago I came home from the hospital and drank an entire bottle of the 53 Margaux. I put my other bottle away and to honor her birthday did the same thing, drank it all by myself. The nose was still vibrant with fruit, the color was brickish red, the palate was fruit, mocha and tobacco, the finish was long and smooth. The wine is still very much alive at 63 years old.

This was my epiphany wine back in 1982 which stunned me with its spectacular bouquet and silky texture. Not any more. It's good, it's interesting, but clearly well past its best. For a few minutes immediately after opening the bottle, there was a hint of Margauxberry perfume which faintly reminded me of the former bottle. Some excess acidity was distracting, though. It remained a decent good drink for a couple of hours but no more.

OK, so it's starting to fade. When I get to that age, I'll probably be starting to fade as well. But that did not detract from the complex aromas, with its molasses, brown sugar, earth, cherry blossom and cigar box scents. Soft, silky, elegant and polished, it's time to drink up as this delicate beauty is only going to continue slowly dropping fruit from here.
Madeirized nose with prune. A very delicate body, and a clear, rose-rust color at the edges that darkens to a sort of watermelon ruby red at the center. The clarity and lack of sediment was really surprising, especially for this bottle that was not in optimal condition (signs of past seepage with a mid-low shoulder fill). On the entry, a floral perfume wafts up through the sinuses to the nose. Violets. Tastes of subtle red spice (like a hint of red hots or cinnamon gum), mild, evolved fruit, including hints of dark, muted cherry, and dominant tertiary flavors...mushroom, meat, blood, and a touch of soil. Extremely elegant. Linear and focused. It did not evolve much in the glass, nor did the taste unfold as the sip lingered, and in that sense, it lacked a dynamic element. That is, it started as it finished. While perhaps just a little understated, a wonderful, thought provoking evolved and mature Margaux. Bottom line: beautiful, but not all that complex.

Not a perfect bottle. Mid shoulder. Not stored under perfect conditions Mature, brick colour. Still quite dense for its age. Quite vital and lively bouquet. Mature earthy notes of meat, mushrooms, truffles, blood, leather, tobacco, stables and chocolate. Yes, there is some brett. But I like that and it gives an extra dimension to this wine that it needs. Nice mouthfill. Smooth and elegant. Good mature flavours of meat, tobacco and leather. There is a residual sweetness in the back. This wine has a depth. Complex and layered. All parts in harmony, so good balance. Quite long finish. Even if the bottle wasn't in perfect shape it delivers. I want to get my hands on a bottle in good shape 91 - 92 p.
Open, soft, emminently drinkable, wonderful red spice notes. Good ripeness to the faded red fruits and wonderful sweetness on the finish if lacking a bit in complexity. Drinking beautifully but perhaps slipping past its best.

Light bell pepper, residual sweetness, and mushroom on the nose. Palate is thinning but provides an enjoyable mature bordeaux experience with a jolt of sweetness on the backpalate. I found this to be a surprisingly robust companion to venison for its first 30 minutes in the glass. Don't wait longer on this one.

My gosh, this was still alive and really quite nice. I popped and poured into a decanter to settle the wine and pretty much drank the whole bottle during Thanksgiving meal. The wine started cloudy, but had fresh scents of forest floor, tobacco leaves, cedar, and lovely aged mellow red fruit, and a little spice cake perception. After about 45 minutes the wine woke up from the air and the clouds actually lessened. In the mouth the red fruit still had some sweet perceptions, and gave up pretty Autumnal red fruit and spice. There was a slight drying cedar taste, but it wasn't too much and didn't take away from the wine- picture an older version of 1983 Lafite, in terms of the cedar.

TNs: 1953, 1960, 1962 and 1986 Château Margaux, 1953 and 1955 Rioja etc: Tasted blind in a line up of mainly older Bordeaux. Colour brownest in tasting. Aromas of forest floor, black truffles, porcini mushrooms with some spice and cream. A bouquet very close to Madeira or a dry sherry had me thinking this might be one of the Spanish wines. On palate, even more developed than the 1960, multiple savoury layers, tending black truffle, dried fruit and mushroom. Great concentration, fruit weight and structure, totally seamless, with silky texture and great length. Perhaps slightly past its peak, but a beautiful, intriguing fully mature wine. 95.

Exotic floral perfume with spices, truffles, cassis and wet forest scents. But, to me, where the wine really takes off is on the palate… Like syrup of Margaux, this very concentrated, multi layered, opulent wine oozes over your mouth, tongue and every other taste receptor you can think of. This is so sexy, silky rich and dense. Dry Port is an apt descriptor. Utterly compelling wine. The wine continued improving in the glass for over an hour. It might have continued evolving if we were able to resist its charms for any longer.

This brick tinted, ruby colored wine displayed a beautiful profile of strawberry jam, fresh raspberries, cedar chest and spice aromatics which were further propelled because of the red and black fruits. Brown. At first this wine smelled corked. Like a wet Alsacian dog. This seemed to blow off with air. Perhaps this was just the initial "funk" og being let out of its bottle after 50+ years of captivity. Once again, camphor on the nose. In the mouth the wine is medium bodied with good intensity, and sweet warm flavours on the initial attack. There was also a flavour component of orange chocolate truffle. Light on its feet and with an aftertaste that turned a hair bitter.

Fifth bottle of six purchased from Hurricane Wines in 1982. This is one of the better ones. Light bright color, orange rim. Beautiful flowery, cedary Margaux fragrance which held fairly well. Excellent true flavor. Minimal tannins. Short aftertaste. Not up to the first bottle I tasted in 1982 but still very enjoyable.

Last bottle from the Hurricane Wine sextet. Not good. Light and browning. Still remnants of that gorgeous Margaux perfume. Thin and watery though, short finish. Fortunately, no excess acidity.
