What a great Village level 2005, this is just now entering its peak drinking window. Black, brawny and meaty, this has the volume and density of 1er Cru with some faint rough edges for the sake of rustic charm. This is a powerful wine good to enjoy over the next couple of decades, it’s what 2005 was meant to deliver.

It’s never fun when a wine is corked. That was the case when we thought we’d be tasting a 1999 Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Thankfully, we had a backup bottle: Daniel Bocquenet’s 2005 Nuits-St-Georges 'Aux Saint-Julien’. A savory Burgundy that took around two hours to really hit its peak, this village Nuits-Saint-Georges from Daniel Bocquenet was earthier than a typical red burgundy. Flooded with flavors of umami, tart cherry, mushroom and spices on the palette, this wine truly got better by the glass. This was a really interesting example of the Pinot Noir grape that was incredibly good on the night once it hit its stride.

wow, had a bottle of this a couple months back and it wasn't that nice... this time it was good on night one but saved 1/3 of the bottle for night two (gassed and fridg'd)... oh boy what an experience on night two... beautiful texture in the mouth, with umami / spice on top of slithery fruit as the wine migrates across your tongue... what a beautiful wine, I immediately went to find more and ZERO in the US right now... oh well, if you have them I recommend decanting in the AM for dinner... the extending air really really helps

Drinking much better than two years ago. Nicely resolved. Bright fruit with noticeable hints of cherry. Unlike the bottle before it (2011 Irancy), no hints of game or green. Very easy and pleasant to drink, and a nice QPR ($30/btl on sale years ago).

Yes a real nsg. Dark and savory, lots of mushroom and earth. Dark cherry, very tart. And 2005 in its strength and tannins. Nothing to dislike here, but the wine certainly isn't going out of it's way to befriend you either. Good now and might last a decade but it's not mind blowing.

this was fine, on the pnp on nite one it was rustic in a high toned way, with acidity, spicy/savory, and some sweet purple fruit swirling around... sorta a wild ride on the pnp... then settled a touch (and I'm not sure it was better), then on night two it had retreated a bit and wasn't as good... I guess this is NSG... best on nite one and on the pnp

This wine started with a bit of a sappy fruit nose and palate. However, as it evolved over a couple of hours this drifted away and the true nose and flavors came out, which were spectacular. I continue to find that older Bourgogne Pinot still takes a long time in the decanter to really wake up and give its best. My score for this wine continued to rise going from ~91 to start, but finishing strong at 93-94. I realize I just probably broke all the scoring rules, but hey, that how it worked out for me. The son was over to dinner tonight, and Mr. Stingy with the wine scores gave it a 93. So, this wine made an impressive performance as it opened up. Pretty nice for a Village and a $49 auction price.

This wine perplexes me. The last bottle was so rough with tannin, I was surprised to have teeth the next day. Worried, I opened another bottle this evening. Not nearly as tannic and rough as the bottle last month but this is certainly a big, burley and rustic wine. The nose has notes of classic darker spectrum Pinot fruits. The palate is old school and burly. There is enough fruit in this bottle to balance the tannin. But let's be clear: this is rough and tumble. I have no idea what will happen here. Save for another 10 or 15 years? (88+?)

big wine, not decanted so hard to evaluate, very inert at this stage and while not bad, it also did not have any sort of burgundy nuance. I would decant and see if more comes out or hold for a long time

Gorgeous ruby. Painfully intense, almost vulgar aromas of funky earth, blueberry, and mushroom. Amazing texture, pasty, chewy, chalky and dense. Then a long, gloriously harmonious resonant finish. This is peaking beautifully. Hart to believe it is just villages level.

My experience is very different from other tasters so I will not score. Healthy garnet color. Big nose has fruit and green elements. Even after being opened for three days the wine is bitter and tannic over a nice core of sweet Pinot fruit. While others have mentioned tannin, I find this almost brutal so I will assume this is an off bottle and try another. This almost hurts to consume and I am a fan of austere, old style wines.

Nose; dried raspberries, strawberries, some caramel after airing out for 1 hour Taste: dried blackberries, steel, dates, this would be a heck of a lot better without the tannins.

Much tighter and more nerve than the '03 Girardin Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes.
On the nose, aromatic with a depth of aromas that don't quite match the palate. On the palate, relatively tight, with a iron / iodine note (nailed by previous reviewers) in the background that may contribute to that sense. Noticeable tannins and acidity give the impression that this might benefit from further aging, but it's coming together reasonably well for current consumption. Like others, I'm not sure the fruit is there to support long-term aging, but don't need to feel the need to rush on these either.

Annual Bonfire Night tasting. The nose was very expressive with lovely Nuits earth, iron, minerals and gamey notes. At first the palate had a big tannic framework with little in the middle but with air and time the palate filled out to come into line with the nose and showed some nice Nuits character. Another lieu-dit performing above its expected level with depth and concentration. Whether this has enough fruit to really fulfil its potential in the future is open to some debate, but I think there is enough there to be optimistic.

This is the 2005. A bit lighter than I tend to like. This wine has red fruit, baking spice, and the start of some toffee on the nose. Palate is bright and silky with a tangy wet iron thing and a medium finish. Nicely balanced and certainly pleasant. It doesn't seem to be opening up with air, I think it may be time to drink these!

I'm on the fence with this one. On the one hand, I like the understated fruit, the earthiness, and the acidic structure. On the other, the aggressive tannins are getting in the way of my enjoyment, and the wine is almost too austere without a discernible promise of what may be unpacked later on. Re-tasted at 12 hours after opening, but it's not helping a whole lot. Maybe I opened it a few years too soon.

I agree that this is a wine that is Burgundy. And this is why I love Burgundy and the Burgundy wannabes from Oregon. It has a tart edginess that blended with complexity went perfectly with my salmon last night. If it had a bit more fruit, I'd have scored it higher. Drink now.

Friday Offline with Mostly Old World Gems (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)): Dark red color. Decanted for about an hour. Drank 1 glass over an hour. Very good nose with an good amount of fruit, blueberry, cherry, red currant, dry earth. The palate is fairly tart, tart red fruit, cherry, wood spice, dry earth, mineral, red currants, medium finish. Seemed to open further in glass and may improve modestly. 89(+?)pts.

Not my cup of tea this one. One of the more ultra rustic NSG's. Tannic and tough with "unappealing" aromas - heavy brett and merde taint on the nose. Disappointed, considering the vintage, as I've had St. Julien from the likes of Montille that were impressive. The palate however still needs a bit of time so if you're into this sort of thing, check back in another 3 years.

An early peek in on a village 2005, and it's rewarding. Still a tremendous amount of tannin, but plenty of fruit and earth depth to handle it. Clearly too soon, but not so forbidding as to dissaude me from opening other 2005 village wines.

Medium red. This is coming together! Fragrant nose of cherries, nose tingling cedar, and a little damp earth. Nice acidity that went perfectly with a fabulous duck breast. Still has tannins on the finish, but they have softened and were barely noticable with dinner. My wife's duck breast recipe if you care: 1- Preheat a fry pan for 3 minutes. 2- Brown in covered pan, fat side down for 10 minutes 3- Transfer to another pan and bake 18 minutes at 400F, uncovered, fat side up. Breast is medium/rare to medium. 4- Enjoy with a good pinot noir.

Yikes. For a moment I thought this was my only bottle and I flat-out panicked. Color a little darker red than I would have thought. Nose immediately appealing rustic red berries, a little cola and sous bois notes-very Nuits. Expansive in the mouth, quickly coating every bit of surface with persistent fresh red berries, well integrated wood and unless I bit my tongue today, an acid tingle. This has it all for a villages. Judging from weight and meaty components, it will get better with another few years of cellaring. Me likes.

Earth, spice, & red fruit nose that keeps changing as I twirl. A little smoke in there too. It is a bit tannic on the finish, but there is decent fruit to help that. It needs more time. Had it with a meatloaf dinner and it was right on.
