Unico + BBQ Makes for Quite the Night (Los Olivos, CA): I bought two of these some years ago, and the first disappointed, relatively speaking. My worries for this bottle were entirely unfounded. Even the appearance of the wine was barely distinguishable from all but the youngest served as part of the vertical, with very slight bricking at the edges as the only tell. Powerful aromatics, not shy or fading in the least: smoke, kirsch and a mild mintiness. Caramel and nut flavors join in on the palate, with a seamless, glycerined texture. Again, we found that the ageability really allows the Bordeaux component to elevate the wine to an extraordinary level. Nipped by the 1981 as WOTN, but only just.

Tar, black olives, bright cherry flauvors, hints of strawberries, fresh and light bodied, fruit is still present but getting gradually thinner so the acidity is more accentuated than in 1953 and 1960 in the same flight.

The 1962 Vega Sicilia Unico was awarded the perfect 100 points by Neal Martin a few years ago. Slightly disappointingly, the 1962 was the weakest of the trio Vega Sicilia lineup of 1962, 1968 and 1970.
This 1962 is incredibly young for its age, the maturity is almost comparable to a Bordeaux from 1989! Restrained fresh dark fruits, dark plums, kirsch, smoked meat and integrated vanilla wood. Deep flavours that are lively and firm (at least for the first hour).
A gentle beast.

Been chasing the dragon on this one and it finally slayed!!! A perfect bottle of ‘62 Único en MAGNUM!
First time out of Magnum for me, I’ve had other 750s of this Legend, but they didn’t live up to the hype of this bottle.
Complex and elegant. Medium, finely grained tannins, ripe cherry, fresh leather and scorched earth. Drank like an elegant Margaux in its structure, but distinctively Spain with the faintest telltale of dill on the nose.

Wow, what a great and complex wine. Great nose but really interesting palate with nuances I have not tried before (agree with other notes here regarding flavor spectrum).
Remember to decant for min. 3 hours as there is an unpleasant tangy note initially that completely goes away with long enough decant.
Can’t wait to try the 68!

Advanced (but not to the point of being flawed), with a badly deteriorating underside of the cork signaling less than perfect storage, though I was assured perfect provenance. Nonetheless a beguiling and rewarding wine. Nose of smoke, cherry and mild eucalyptus, a touch raisiny. Caramel and nut flavors join in on the palate, which is on the thin side rather than creamy in texture, consistent with the advanced state of the wine. Faint vanilla and leather on the finish.

bright red young color, chocolate, dark fruits and polished earth on the nose, on the palate fine depth with a smooth and seamless fruit leading into a long and fragrant finish, on the palate cherry and intense blueberry notes, chiseled grey stone edges, there is a lot going on here but the wine is still very primary and will need more time to fully reveal itself, drinking beautifully today but worth saving a few to see what comes in time. I have not had many vintages of Vega Sicilia Unico, but this strikes me as a particularly elegant example.

We bought tickets to the Spanish wine tasting mainly because of this wine. And I must say totally worth it. This was knock your socks off good. I believe Unicos need at least 30 years or so to start to come around but at this age they are just singing. It's a beautiful wine. To be honest, the oak is still there, but mostly integrated. Comes across as a bit more vanilla. Lots of leather. It's a special wine. Feels like it might be just in that perfect drinking window although I don't think it's going anywhere fast.

Perfect bottle. Served blindly. Nobody at the table guesed VS. I was "sure" it was not Bx, Burgundy and Australia. I thought more to an old California than VS. This time it deserves 100 because nose and palate are perfect. Still a subtle cherry and dark berries fruit, cigarbox, violet and a Burgundy extract sweetness. Elegant, dense and concentrated and a sublime fine finish. 100
The 70 also served blindly had a big opponent but nevertheless a tremendous wine. More Bordeaux style and still very fresh. Not reached his peak. 97+

Unico tasting (27 different vintages) at the Rheingau Gourmet Festival 2017: clear ruby colour; not much aroma traffic in the nose; in the mouth some black and red berries; medium body with a butter like texture; the wine had a medium acidity.
This bottle was impressive right away. A dark garnet color with hints of cherries, strawberries, slight tobacco and just smooth and velvety. The wine continued to get better over time. what a pleasure.

Mostly Bordeaux dinner with Bob (Magdalena restaurant at the Ivy Hotel, Baltimore): What a privilege to drink the legendary Unico. Expressive complex nose displaying extremely dry cherry, kirschwasser, dry fig, strawberry jam, rose, dark caramel, ash, tar, leather, baking spices, a hint of madeira/oxidative note, coffee and earth. Still showing excellent concentration, very warm and round, silky and oily, still hint of tannins and long deeply toned sweet finish that ends with a hint of madeira and earth. I think this will last but won’t get any better. It reminds me the 68 Maestrano Taurasi a bit in extremely ripe fruit, tar and ash. Though the nose is incredibly complex, my rating reflects my slight aversion to extreme ripeness.

Remarkable wine; looks and drinks nothing like it's 52 years. So much so that I worry I was drinking a fake (although the bottle and aged cork would be hard to fake and the source of the bottle was top notch). As another poster said, ruby red and no brown - like an 07 burgundy I think he wrote. Lots of cherry in the nose (like a burg), plum, assorted berries, a bit of cinnamon. Rich and medium bodied. red jammy and focused on the palate. Raspberries. Rhubarb. 30 second finish. Dare I say it, the wine is youthful and perhaps it is even early to open it. I reserved a glass and drank it three hours after opening the bottle, it was still improving. All told though, I like the 2004 Unico better as I think it has more complexity and richness.

SS's birthday celebration at Garibaldi. The colour was unbelievably young for a wine of 52 years. Bright red, not even the slightest hint of any browning, even at the rim. This honestly looked like a Burgundy from Vogue from say 2007. The nose was extremely perfumed, with lots of red roses, tart cherries and minerals. Palate was extremely balanced, still with a fair amount of tannins, round, silky, and refined. There was lots of primary young ripe fruit like freshly plucked strawberries, cherries, raspberries and orange cream. I must add that this wine kept evolving in the glass, and as the night ended, this was the one holding up the best, and it was 52 years of age! As the wine developed, I got lots of chocolate powder, mocha, cedar, plums, prunes, fresh leather, scorched earth. This all appeared at different times whenever I visited the glass. This wine was worth its weight in gold.

Earthy, smoky and intense and so fresh and youthful for a 50+ year old wine. Goregeous ripe dark fruits combined with a touch of volatile acidity to show off a great vintage of Unico. This wine is harmonious and layered and almost olive-oil laced in its texture. The finish is amazingly complex with notes of figs and carob. Perfectly mature and should hold for quite some time.

We had a trio of Unico - 62. 68, and 70. Notes: The 1962 (bottle # 50459) was a very good bottle from a case with lots of variability. The fruit was less forward than the others, but what was there was terrific. A great showing. The 1968 kicked it up a notch. There was a bit of back and forth between 62 and 68 - both were terrific and call it a draw. Then the 1970 arrived. Wow, what a full palate. Fresh. Its really the great Unico that people talk about when they talk 1970. Consensus best of flight. All of these were purchased in Europe 15+ years ago, and the provenance showed. Great showing, reminds me why I fell in love with Unico back in the day.

Chateau Palmer Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Incredibly fresh red and black fruit on nose with great spice and some emerging cedar wood aromas. Kitchen Tasting Group Does Beaver Creek – Day One: Wow, was this a nice bottle of wine. Brad had effectively lowered expectations based on previous bottles, but this was really spectacular. The nose is subtle and expressive rather than boisterous and offered a lovely melange of cherry, red fruit, earth, smoke, and mineral. Impressive taste -- palate coating and brimming with life despite its age. Great balance and a finish that had to be savored. Awesome stuff.

Pre Auction Wine Tasting w/ 1962 Unico & Krugs (NYC): Dark red purple color. Great sweet aromas of jammy red and black fruits infused with some spicy herbs. Tastes oh so ripe and oh so young for a 36 year old wine. Tastes a bit like a barrel sample of old vine grenache. Great finish of crystallized fruit. Spectacular wine.

Youthful in both appearance and initial vigor. Attractive black raspberry, dark earth, and cherry wood smoke. I liked this less than some of my co-conspirators. Faded somewhat in the glass after one hour. Served without a decant. 95+

Very fresh while still having plenty of tannins to it. Ian saw some nice plum to it which had a nice sweetness to the wine while still being firm.

Guessing this still has another 10 years or more to it. Relatively shy bouquet. Spices and tea tasted.

The White Club private tasting and dinner (Basel): Loads of dried figs in the nose, super interesting palate with a great balance but endlessly ongoing finish. Makes you smile

We had a trio of Unico - 62. 68, and 70. Notes:
The 1962 (bottle # 50459) was a very good bottle from a case with lots of variability.

Really powerful fruit seems incredibly primary for its age with some exciting rustic, leather qualities emerging powerfully on the palate. Finish just goes on and on, picking up intensity.

So young and lively on the nose. Roses, blood, toast, black berries. Medium bodied with great acidity, very very long finish. Not as concentrated and full bodied as the 1968, but higher pitched. Great wine!!

This wine has power and persistence. Bouquet of curcumin oil, caraway, dry flowers, still parfumed like nutmeg, roses and deep fruit. Sensational!
