Acker JK 51st birthday in NYC. Intoxicating perfumes to die for, plums, grilled meats, dark forrest, black fruits, a time stopper, followed by a complex mouthfeel, silky, plenty of sap and depth of flavors, lifted and chalky finish. Brilliant.

Another great bottle of this that is drinking beautifully. While obviously not at the level of the exceptional vintages around it ('91, '93, '99) it remains a relative bargain for Rousseau Chambertin drinking in that current window of maturity.

Aerated in bottle for 2 hours. Even red center, light garnet rim. At first a slightly aggressive stemminess which converted to more gentle, fragrant wintergreen accompanied by red berries. Medium light weight. Subtly sweet strawberry, spice, light earth, and a lovely citric twist. Firm acidity but nothing out of place as in some other 1996's. Since it was one of my few remaining bottles of Rousseau, I wanted to be bowled over by its quality but honestly was not. Don't get me wrong; it's an outstanding bottle of Burgundy, just not as transcendent as others have made it out to be.

Silky on the palate, magnificent to the touch, with a still very young palate, a little tart after the first attack. Beautiful material with a balance that takes over, it's serious though a little monotonous. Big intense finish we come back to the aromas of black tea.

Purchased on release for 110 CDN and have followed this for 24 years. Part of the triad of 93,95and 96 that have taken their sweet time to open up. Another birthday wine served with smoked hickory rack of lamb. Medium ruby with explosive arctic tundra flowers and cranberries on the nose. Still tart Montmorency cherry palate, almost on the verge of opening, with big boy grip in spades and a strong finish of smoked cocoa. Best 2030-2055.

At par with the 1988 next to it. A little more density and stronger body, the nose a little less fragrant. Perhaps explained by this one having been decanted and the 1988 not. A great 1996.

In a flight with '96 Clos St. Jacques and Bèze and to me this was the most showy and enjoyable right now. The nose did the best job of showing Gevry's rusticity with a wonderful earth influence and faint sauvage around the otherwise clean and pure red and black berry fruit. Still booming and powerful but probably the most accessible out of the three. Pure and precise palate, effortlessly delivers rich fruit and earth flavour in an elegant package. Bèze is probably technically superior in terms of stuffing and structure, but as a soulful expression this was my favourite.

Light and bright ruby to garnet. Incredible burgundian nose that is perfectly mature. Barnyard, earth, mushrooms, truffles. Ripe strawberries on the palate, elegance combined with power. Deep flavours and complex. The label condition was seriously faded, but the cork was perfect and the wine was drinking superbly, even if perhaps slightly more developed than we may have expected. One of the best wines I have tried all year. From BV

mushroom, spice and some strawberry jam - really bright cherry fruit and high acid but a touch of funk. Really savory on the finish. Lots of strawberry. Not as good on the nose as the one we had the week before. But palate was killer.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Fourth Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia): Absolutely gorgeous mature complex nose displaying subtle bright red fruit, strawberry candy, dry cherry, mocha, caramel, Vosne spice, truffle, grilled fat, sous bois, cep, cinnamon and limestone. Beautifully integrated palate, very finely layered subtle red fruit, silky and polished, incredible balance and precision, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with a hint of Vosne spice and grilled fat at the end. This is a classic perfectly mature Chambertin that can easily last for a few more decades.

Ngo style dinner (les Sense KL): Incredible depth and lifted aromatic of potpourri, mint, autumn leaves, savouriness, undergrowth and red and blue berries fruits that is so deep and draw you to it. Fresh, good sweetness interplay with the juicy acidity, a little drying tannin at the back, but still possesses with superior class, silkiness, depth and regal. Nose is clean and pure, a little dark and brooding, definitely holding back expressiveness in favour of power. Fresh and delicious and there is detectable delicacy here, but good bottles of this are built for the long haul. Placed in a matrix of 1996 and 1997 Rousseau Chambertin and Bèze, and while this was probably the technically best or second best wine it was also the most reserved.

Drank the 96 Chambertin and Beze side by side. Both are great wines, but tonight both were about the future. I've had some bottles of both over the past few years that were more in the zone, particularly the Beze.

The last bottle of the night at close to 3am. I know, its ridiculous. But this was ridiculously good. Still so young and fresh - black and red fruits with great acidity. The conversation was how this is an overlooked vintage and comparatively is a bargain. I would agree. Must find a few of these.

Fabulous. Stunning nose of spiced fruit. Nose goes on for a minute or more. On the palate it certainly shows higher tannins of '96 but it's an exciting element of the wine rather than overwhelming. Altogether an excellent, balanced, thrilling Chambertin. Will go for years, of course, but in a wonderful place.

While a success for the vintage, this does not currently show the brilliance that Rousseau Chambertin can. Shows nice balance with rich fruit but not overly ripe. I'd be inclined to give this more time in the bottle, and on this occasion would have preferred more than one hour of air time. 93-94+

DGs Birthday: Stem, chocolate, cherry, and earthy notes on the nose. The palate here is a step up on the 95 CdB, showing an extra level of elegance and restrained power. There is great finesse and drive here and it will benefit greatly from more time.

Served blind, and I thought this was CSJ. It came across as more lean and austere, with red fruit and not as complete or rich as I'd expect from a great Chambertin. I remain suspicious the glasses were reversed, but the host swears he was diligent, and all glasses were numbered. Whatever it was, it was not up to the level this producer is capable.

A 40th Birthday Celebration, Dinner Edition (Atlas Bistro - Scottsdale AZ): Another confusing wine. Nicely mature black fruit with red berry hints. Lots of braised meat character with cooked mushroom. If I were served this as blind Rousseau, I'd have thought it from the 1980s and unlikely would have thought it Chambertin. Less of almost everything great vs previous examples of this wine, even though I certainly found it very enjoyable tonight.

1996 Burgundy Grand Cru Dinner (Forlino's, One Fullerton, Singapore): Wow. What a way to end the night. I was bowled over by the 1996 Clos de Beze a couple of years ago - this was even better. One of those vintages where the Chambertin did better than the Beze chez Rousseau then. There was a superb nose on this, with layer after layer of earth and meat, red cherries and berries, all layered with a whiff of foresty sous bois. What a bouquet - classic Chambertin, yet every bit as alluring as the Musignies or the RSV. This was popped and poured, unlike some of the other wines on the night, which were meticulously prepared, but it was somehow absolutely singing on the palatem. This was hard to descirbe - it had muscular power and elegant finesse all in one beautiful package. The flavours were juicy and pure and bursting with clarity - cherries and raspberries, bramble and spice, earth and meat and mineral, all tied together by a deeply buried spine of pure tannins that gave the wine a real muscular grip. There was plenty of noticeably juicy acidity too, but without the bright assertiveness that some of the 1996s still show. I particularly loved how this kept unfurling in the mouth in a long, insistent finish full of gentle spice. A complete wine, with tons in its tank still. This was breathtaking on the day, and should continue to show well for the better part of the next decade beyond.

Quite a stern nose of meat, mushroom, iron and touch of red fruit and spice. After several hours more rose petal notes emerged, but the beefiness was dominant. Sturdy and a bit rugged on the palate. Seems like it needs more time to sort itself out but interesting nonetheless.

"SG50" Dinner - A dinner to mark and celebrate 50-years of nation building! (Jade Palace): Wow, the nose was just so mesmerizing, with notes of violets, tea, cherries. I had thought that this could be the '00 Beze, but hey, I should've known better! It had this slight tinge of bitterness initially, but that apparently fleshed out in the glass, with earth, red-dark cherry fruits, some spice & smoke. What a wonderful mouthfeel and body. So much finesse. Quite the complete wine.

An SG 50 celebratory dinner at Jade Palace. To me, this was almost the perfect wine. My wine of the evening. Dark red, but a touch of brown at the rim. Unmistakably Gevrey. Unmistakably a quite amazing Gevrey. Dark ripe and intense fruit. Fresh blueberries, wild strawberries, exotic spice, minerals, smoked meats with that incredible perfume. The palate was even better - An intense mélange of dark, rich and sweet fruit, blueberries in particular, with honey, mocha, coffee bean, Arabian spice, beef, lamb fat. The balance on this wine was perfect. Well, sometimes it is about the price and the producer. This wine would justify a $2,000 price tag. Easily.

Still young with a strong core of sour cherry. Great power and endless finish. Has the trademark Rousseau focus and precision. To me not quite ready, but drinkable. Recommend air before drinking. Tried the second and third day it was much more open but still relatively tightly wound.

Paris Club with Alan, Dan, and Chris. Lovely large scale aromas of big black dense cherry, animal, smoke, and dark earthy loam. Succulent wine with wonderful density, showing dark sweet sour quality to ripe black cherry fruits. Long and sleek. Lots going on here and in a very very good place, yet still comes across young. Loads of pleasure now with a one hour decant, but this has potential to even get better. Can you tell I liked it?

Sydney Burgundy Celebration Gala Dinner: Extremely floral and perfumed right from the get go - along with supporting notes of earth, cherry and spice. Cellared since release. Always a great treat to have at dinner side-by-side with the Clos-de-Bèze to compare. Both are just coming into maturity. This wine is lighter in color than the Bèze, but I was surprised to find them on this night to taste more similarly than they do out of cask. Some gaminess to the nose here, lighter in body and more finesse than the Bèze with dark, gamy fruit, silkiness, subtle complexity, and still some tannin. This wine should continue to improve for a decade or two at least. What an amazing producer!

Fantastic fruit profile on the nose, with lovely minerals and signs of beginning age. Just coming around the 1996 bend. Has some of the typical 96 acidity present, but the fruit is now starting to come around to where it should be. Still fat cherry fruit present, with balance and minerals, complex and balanced, with lingering spicy minerals and stones on both the palate and the nose. This is still sort of young, and I believe this has many years left, even before peak. Brilliant and beautiful. A top Chambertin.

A stunning wine with gorgeous aromatics with notes of dark cherry spice, forest floor and minerals. On the palate, it is still very primary and firmly structured but absolutely seamless at the same time with a gloriously pure texture and wonderful flavors of cherrywood and red spices. The finish is succulent and very fine with notes of packed minerals and complex spices. Although enjoyable now, it would seem a shame not to wait for this perfectly balanced wine to reach maturity in 10+ years. Wowza! 97+

Decanted and enjoyed over 2 hours. Immediately, more open, energetic and vibrant than the 96 beze served alongside it. Quite a bit of brett/funk on the nose and palate but immediately overwhelmed by gorgeous red fruits and Rousseau bubblegum as ken put it. Just an extra level of energy and vibrancy over the 90 faiveley latricieres.

Tasting of Chambertin and Clos-de-Bèze (Amarone (Rotterdam, The Netherlands)): The winner of the tasting, this is greatness in the making. We had it alongside 1993. When just poored the 1993 outshone this wine, but after 15/30 minutes... Spicy, powerful nose. Such a development in the glass... this is truly great. It just goes on and on and on... Magnums for Dave (Jean-Georges - New York, NY): From magnum. Dense black fruit to start with lots of meaty, powerful spice. Smoky black fruit on the palate with massive structure. Tasted alongside a monolith in the 96 De Vogue Musigny. Stylistically this was the wine I preferred. Very elegant and tightly knit. Perhaps this was too young also as it was slightly lean at this point in time. Has a wonderful complex nose, sweet perfume of smoky/savoury red briar fruits, very terroir driven (the antithesis of the de Vogue). The framework, whilst being refined needs to fill out more to become great.

Placed in a matrix of 1996 and 1997 Rousseau Chambertin and Bèze, and while this was probably the technically best or second best wine it was also the most reserved.

Brief tasting, but zowie! Rich dark black cherry fruit in a creamy spiced style. Perfumed floral elements and tremendous depth of flavors with great intensity. This is so young, yet giving such tremendous pleasure even now. Wow.

While a success for the vintage, this does not currently show the brilliance that Rousseau Chambertin can. Shows nice balance with rich fruit but not overly ripe. I'd be inclined to give this more time in the bottle, and on this occasion would have preferred more than one hour of air time. 93-94+

Easily.

Wowza! 97+
