2019 Château Canon

Community Tasting Notes

Community Tasting Notes (35) Avg Score: 95.5 points

  • Very good, but not as spectacular as previous vintages. Had for wife's 40th birthday, along with a lineup of first growths and Napa cabs. Overshadowed by several others wines of the evening.

  • Canon vs. Duffau-Lagarrosse 2009-2020 tasted blind (Fribourg): Medium garnet, Nose of dark fruit, sweet spices, well judge oak, medium plus bodied, buttery oak notes. Lovely may be not the last word on complexity (yet). Has upside from here. 93+

  • Vertical of Canon vs Beasejour Duffau Lagarrosse (Fribourg): Vertical of Beausejour Duffau Lagarrosse vs Canon vs selected pirates 2005-2020. Main takeaways : i/ Canon trumps Beausejour overall, especially in more recent ones. ii/ Canon tends to be lighter-footed, more delicate while Beausejour is typically more extracted and ripe. iii/ St Emillion clearly struggles with the hotter vintages a few years on with 2005 the low-light, already exhibiting beef juice elements. iv/ best wines were Canon 2015 (95), 2019 and 2020 (94 each). Summary of wines and scores included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Sweet and ripe yet fresh and sexy red berry fruit. Cooler mineral notes create tangible breadth to the aroma profile. A fresh fruit on the palate, great balance with seamlessly integrated tannin already today, only later in the finish feeling slightly grainy. Promising – especially as the fruit no longer came across as extracted as when freshly bottled in 2021.

  • The 2019 is a blend of 74% Merlot and 26% Cabernet Franc. 14.5% ABV. From half-bottle. Decanted for two hours. Ripe red, blue, and black fruit, black currant, plum, ripe blueberry, ripe strawberry, ripe raspberry, espresso, smoke, spices, liquorice, coconut, and vanilla, with medium-minus acidity, light, fine, firm tannin, and very good length. Good structure and great concentration. Creamy texture. Light heat from the alcohol on the back-end. A modernistic interpretation of St. Émilion, and an outstanding wine. While accessible already, this young wine will need time to digest the generous oak. Drink from 2031+.

  • Clearly too early to pass judgement (score should have a ?) but for me missing that freshness I have enjoyed in other 2019s - just a bit burly right now. A no- thanks for the cellar for now.

  • 2019 Bordeaux Tasting, MW tasting (Vintner's Hall, London): 74% Mer 26% CF, 14.50%
angry, heady, black fruit, some pyrazine in the back
Palate shows edges, depth, herbs, ripe fresh black fruit, tannins, fruit liqueur, med finish, feels uneven, unbalanced

  • Wine is technically well made, leaning toward Napa style. Drinking blind, could be Napa. Not a lot of earthiness, both tannin and acidity are high. Oak is present and not well controlled. A bit boring, I think.

  • My colleagues and I organized a mini Canon vertical to redefine the scores in relation to the fabulous 2022 vintage. We cannot put 100 points everywhere. 2021 not tasted. Naturally these notes correspond to an "M" moment and are likely to vary at another moment

    1) 2020 100/100
    2) 2019 -2022 (sample) 98-99/100
    4) 2018-2016-2015 97-98/100
    7) 2014 94/100
    8) 2017 93/100

  • From a half bottle.
Strange bottle compared to earlier samples I've had. Disjointed and awkward. Flawed?

  • Nez leger, red berries, smoke, sous-bois... Nice crisp red cherries, sappy finish.

  • Confit fruits on the nose, shows a lot riper than its top-tier right bank peers (Figeac/Cheval Blanc/VCC/Eglise Clinet). On the palate shows pure blue fruit notes, almost a ‘wine gum’ note

  • Agree with REMYWORLDPEACE but on higher end of his range. Dense and creamy wine with good acids, but a bit monolithic and a little oaky right now. Oakiness softened with a couple hours of air. A wine to lay down for 15-20 years and wait for some transparent elegance.

  • UGC 2019 Singapore (Singapore): Good weight and density but as so often with Canon in its youth not particularly expressive or long then on the finish at this point in time. An aristocratic and reserved wine, almost left bank in style. Very good but not wow yet. Should improve but clearly will need a fair bit of time. 93

  • Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2019 Vintage Tasting, Singapore: Tasted at UGC Bordeaux 2019 tasting in Singapore.

Red fruits, with creamy vanilla from the oak and stoney undertones. Decent finish with tannins beginning to soften.

Needs more time to gain complexity and open up. Too young to score but anticipated range 91-94.

  • Floral and fresh bright red fruits. Juicy and transparent, good stony minerals. Liquorice and hint of leather too. Good substance. Elegant and potential.

  • Decanted.
First sniff, very floral and interesting. Perfect ripeness.
    CF dominated.
In the course of 3hrs closing up. Good length, very ripe tannins. 94-97 pts.

  • Just wow. This has perfect weight and the color is astonishingly magenta, almost neon around the edges. Even at this very early stage there is so much depth and nuance. Secondary flavors coming through already and the finish is already so prevalent. I very much look forward to my remaining 5 bottles :)

  • This is one of the best 2019s I've had so far and it was obvious from the first sip. I don't know how any of this was accomplished if the 14.5% ABV on the label is accurate, but the theme here is restraint and it brings to mind the Canons from the 1950s. It just screams classic St.-Emilion. You'll never confuse this for a left bank wine or anything else. Tender in texture and slender in figure, it's already moved past the baby fat stage to feel mature in composure, but the fruit pops out in the leftovers the next day so a lot of what it's packing may just be held back for now.

  • Reddish fruit -- cranberry. Some balanced stemminess, chocolate, medium tannings. A little green. At LA UGC.

  • UGC Bordeaux (Union Station - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Dense, powerful and certainly firmly structured, teasing us with everything held in reserve. One of the few wines tasted today that seemed like classic, old school Bordeaux from the era when these wines were designed to age gracefully. Great potential, 2034 forward.

  • UGC NY; 6/28/2022-6/29/2022: A good showing, but not the right environment to assess. Nose had flowers, ripe red/dark purple fruit, and spice. On the palate this was plump fruit with a creamy mouthfeel. Some sense of graphite or crushed rock? Very fresh finish. Maybe the freshness led itself to being perceived as feeling some alcohol on the finish? Left with impression this will be a great wine, but wondering about that slight overly fresh finish

  • Very good quality here, a clear step up from the other wines at the tasting aside from the Montrose 2016.

Double decanted two hours prior to tasting. Zalto Bordeaux glass.

Still somewhat closed at first and needed more than a tasting pour to really open up. Very elegant, with nice clean chocolate covered cherries and a little toasted oak. Not too much, just an accent. Beautiful structure, with very polished young tannins. Of course somewhat drying, but that is to be expected. Sensual on both the nose and palate.

    95+ points.

  • Impressive wine. Dry, chalky, vertical, almost strict for the genre; painfully young. There is a very sound core of fruit here, waiting to be released. Give this 10+ years before you try it.

  • One of the few wines I was not able to taste in barrel, what's worth having is worth waiting for. This stunner presents an aromatic display combining crushed rocks, stones, flowers and red fruits. If that wasn't enough, the wine really kicks in on the palate with its freshness, concentration, energy, purity and length, which is the perfect backdrop for all the layers of refined, elegant, silky textured, red fruits along with that often, elusive sense of minerality on the palate and in the finish. Drink from 2034-2055.

  • Dusty nose of dark cherry, blackberries and herbs/spices. Across the palate there is superb, savory and pure dark fruits, lifting acidity and round silky tannins. This finishes long and clean. Delicious.

  • UGCB 2019 tasting (Amsterdam): Very tempting bouquet and palate with beautiful sweet impressions. Ripe and creamy red berries. Beautifully round and lush with beautiful acidity and soft and beautiful tannin. 95+

  • Amsterdam UGCB Tasting (Beurs van Berlage): Seamless, elegance and finesse and a very winning souplesse and charm, pure and bright fruit expression, velvety tannins, impeccable balance and length.

  • I‘ve had this a few months at an arrivage tasting and it was the clear consensus winner and this bottle confirmed the status of Canon as one of the wines of the vintage. There‘s hardly any wine on the right bank that achieves the level of weightlessness and exudes as much elegance as Canon since 2015. And this 2019 is probably the most elegant of them all, ahead of the 2015 (thanks to a touch less ripeness), 2018 (thanks to much less ripeness and better integrated alcohol) and 2016 (which today is more structured and doesn‘t have the perfect balance yet, the 2019 has). This is amazing and a must buy. 97-98 pts

TN: From the first moment, this amazes every sense. An intense, intriguing bouquet with fine red currant, blackberries and some blueberries, tobacco, crushed rocks and some fine tobacco. Finely layered, super precise and compared to the 2018, much more restrained and elegant. Same picture on the palate from start to finish. Ripe but very fresh fruit, no shred of overripeness, tobacco, minerality, herbs, the complete package. The aromas are ever so slightly evolving, at first mostly bright red, with time more blue and darker berries with more minerality. The structure and texture are absolute perfection with the finest, silky tannins, a high but not noticeable acidity, an absolute perfect weightless feel with the right amount of creaminess, a very long and expanding finish. This has it all. The longer it sits in the glass the more masculine it gets, revealing that it will need a few years in the cellar.

Decanting: Do not decant the wine. Best right after opening.

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2019 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Tasting of 25 wines (2 whites, 3 sweet, no first growths) at a Bordeaux 2019 in the bottle event. My observations were: i/ the tannic structure was soft and well-integrated across the board, ii/ the fruit was generally fresh and light with no heavy-handed extractions, iii/ Top wines were Client (97), Léoville Barton (96) and Smith Haut Lafitte (96). More thoughts and list of wines included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Quite reserved at first with not much expression. Vigorous swirling revealed a pretty ripe and extracted fruit profile, some sweet notes and fruit tea in the mix. Palate felt ok with soft texture, and some weight behind it. Others disagreed hence revisted for a second glass but with a pretty consistent impression. A solid Canon, but for me this lacked the grandeur of 2015 or even 2018.

  • Bordeaux 2019 - 15 red / 2 white / 4 sweet wines: UCG Arrivage Tasting. A few observations on the red wines: 1) Overall quality: 2019 is indeed another great vintage for Bordeaux reds. The quality was good across the board. 2) Ripeness: 2019 is less ripe than 2015/2018. Out of 15 wines only one (Gazin) showed overripe. But 2016 still wins in this category with the freshest and purest fruit expression. 2019 is in between 2015/2016. 3) Complexity: 2019 will not reach the heights of 2016 but is almost on par with 2015/2018, although the latter one will need to flesh out for quite some time reveal all nuances. 4) Precision: I found superb precision in many wines, however, again not on the level of 2016. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe and very fine, the acidity is generally high (but not as high as in 2016), the texture is nicely airy (unlike with many 15s/18s), no alcohol heat (a problem in 2018) and the wines are very harmonious. 6) Best wines tasted were a magical Canon (96+ pts), a superb Leoville Barton (95 pts). Unfortunately, they were all out of Pichon Lalande - supposedly one of the wines of the vintage.

TN: Tasted twice. This was the best wine at this tasting, no doubt. It is another very strong Canon after the great wines of 2015, 2016, 2018. The 2015 is pure magic and so complex, the 2016 is as aristocratic and classic as a St. Emilion can be these days, the 2018 is the slutty and most ripe one. This 2019 is a mix of the 2015 and 2016: it is a touch more fruit driven and riper, but less so than the 2015 and has the superb, unbelievable elegance no other wine at this tasting managed to achieve. The nose is medium+ expressive with ripe but still very much fresh and pure fruit, crushed rocks, slate, earth, tobacco. Very luxurious and inviting and with very good precision. On the palate the wine is even more elegant with a rainbow of aromas from fine, fresh red berries, darker red berries, some blueberries, some candied strawberries, white chocolate, just hints of baking powder, a nice minerality backbone, earthy notes and again tobacco. The wine is so balanced and harmonious, super luxurious from start to finish. It’s impressive that so many aromas can shine through already at this young age. The structure is impeccable with the finest tannins, a perfectly integrated acidity, a nicely fresh and creamy texture, an airy quality and a good length. This is very promising. How does it compare to the previous great vintages? The 2015 has the same elegance, more complexity but also more ripe- and sweetness. The 2016 will need time to become rounder, but has the same or only slightly higher complexity and the same perfect ripeness. The 2018 is a bit inferior with a touch too much ripeness and sweetness but probably a bit more intensity and expression. A great wine and promise, 96-97+ pts.

  • 2019, Château Canon, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé AOC (Verkostet am 23. Juli auf Château Canon). Dunkles Rubin. 2026-2048+, 98-100/vvPunkte. vvWine.ch
