  • Inky royal purple color. Nose is blackberry pie, herbal and chocolatey. Hard to say how a young wine could find better balance. Incredibly pure fruit, acid, fine tannins and structured. Black and blue fruited and graphitic. A little tar and anise. Beautiful and long finish. Near the top of the 2019s I've had so far.

Thinking this is a drink more soon or lay down for a while situation.
Seemed most open for business in the first four hours. Tightened up a bit after that.

  • Barton Barton. Even this young you made me smile. What a future ahead

  • Clearly young however immensely concentrated and sensationally rich. All the black fruit, leather and tobacco you could ever hope to wish for. Profound stuff. Very much excited to revisit down the line.

  • Very good now, but too young. Has a lot of potential.

  • Tasted this at the International Congress of Chinese Cuisine & Wine, Chateau Leoville Barton, Chateau Langoa Barton & Chateau Mauvesin Barton Masterclass at The Tower Club.

Smooth. Very smooth. This is a piece of work. Dense. Cream and vanilla on the nose.

  • 2019 Bordeaux Tasting, MW tasting (Vintner's Hall, London): 84% CS 16% Mer, 14%
Big, fresh, coffee filled nose, ripe blue fruit, palate with juicy fryuit, big tannins, fresh, youthful, a touch warm, long finish

  • I can't really offer anything beyond the praise this wine has gotten and clearly deserves. One notable thing was a very clear note of new oak. As in no question, here I am. Mostly on the nose. Just sort of a vanilla thing. But once that broad tannin starts in behind all that coiled, young classic Cab strong Bordeaux kicks in, you give it a pass. By the time this is truly ready to drink that oak is gonna be soaked up and integrated. Terrific length. The other very thing to notice is how much this closes up overnight. Its not completely beyond enjoyment but its really hard to coax much out beyond tight dark nondescript fruit with a wall of tannin kicker. Have a nice long sleep now.

  • Young and tight. Helped to decant for a couple hours got better and better

  • Comparing to the '19 Langoa...this wine is more broad and bold, but compared to the '18 Leoville this wine is similarly ripe and forward but not as tannic or lengthy. Just doesn't have the richness or mouthfeel that the '18 had, still very primary as expected.

  • Chateau Leoville Barton 2019.

  • Very tight on PnP as you’d imagine, but this gradually blossomed on the second and later days. Right after the Croix de Ducru, I’d take Ducru to drink now any day. But this still has classic cedar, though at first it was big and dark. Needs plenty of time, but it will deliver.

  • The nose on this wine is so deep , overall the same comments as my prior note but I’m bumping up my score with the emphasis of the powerful aromas, which are quite pleasurable. Showing classic aromas of cassis, licorice , and a blueberry cobbler thing. On the palate a bit lighter than the nose, but balanced by strong tannins and acidity, ‘mouth watering and long dry finish. Quite a treat, and at a reasonable price. 96+

  • Wow! This is great. Blowing Lynch Bages 2019 out of the water. Super classy, old school. Tannin is noticeable. So balanced already. Good finish. This is what a real wine should taste like. Herbal, medicinal.

  • Decanted for four hours. Tight and polished tannins, this reminds me of the ‘05 meets ‘00 at the same age in that it will take a long time for the carapace to disappear. Blackberries, oolong tea, lilies, rock garden and red currants. There’s length and layers, with a full body. An ageless vin. I see no end here. Glorious fruit and composure. Drink 2028 -.

  • Lots of hype around this wine this vintage. I found pretty much what I expected: balanced palate with good fruit density, lots of graphite, but quite grainy tannins. Subtle, it isn't

  • 2019 bdx blind mini-tasting: From 375, Blind #1. is classy, black fruited, and rich. Robust on the nose. Quite deep, with great structure, a dollop of crushed rock, cedar, and oak. Beautiful, but one of the more demonstrative wines of the night. I guess Lynch-Bages (or Poyferre) based on the fruit, and put it in 4th place, a hair behind wine #4 (Cos).

Quite surprised to see Barton, which I expected to be a bit cooler and chiseled in profile, and which was one of the more aristocratic wines that I tasted at UGC.

  • Lip smackingly good. Crazy good aromas, quite complex, quite St Julien. Think Leo Barton is increasingly one of my favorite chateau.
finishing the last glass on day 4 and it is still on fire, no degredation, and still singing on the nose. 9+

  • First of 2 ($65.99) about a week ago from Chateau Costco. On the nose and palate, medium notes of semisweet blackberries, red and black currants, earthiness, leather, graphite, scorched earth and a light citric note on the back end. Medium purple with a slight maroon tint, medium bodied, full legs. Powerful tannins and acidity, no heat. Good complexity, VG+ intensity and persistence. No need to adjust your sets: this is in fact me drinking an infant BDX without benefit of blunt head trauma. Having never paid less than $100 for one of these from a good vintage, finding it at more than a third below that emboldened me to buy 2, and based on CT notes that it wasn’t sheer madness, to pop one shortly thereafter. While this didn’t hit the heights of the recent youthful experiments with Pontet and Beychevelle, it wasn’t far behind and avoided the ball of fury of the ‘18 Montrose. On the pour, the fruit was vibrant and lifted, joined, and somewhat eclipsed by, the tannins and acidity. After a couple of hours, when I poured my first glass, the tannins had mostly settled down and balanced, if not completely integrated, but the elevated acidity still reigned, giving the bottle, for better and worse, an angular feel. A small taste on night 2 revealed a similar profile, so I let it sit for another 2.5 hours at which point the acidity was much less intimidating, making for an elegant drink, especially outstanding with a loin lamb chop (as it starred with pizza the night before), and its continued drinking really well on night 3. So, to recap, this wine had close to 5 hours of non-decanted air as well as being in an opened but recorked bottle overnight for it to get to its best levels at this point for my tastes. I always smile when I hear others describe this cuvée as “modern”, which it may be next Gruaud Larose but certainly isn’t next to said Beychevelle, Pontet or numerous others such as St. Exupery; I’m absolutely convinced I could pick it out as BDX 10:10. That said, this edition is in no way ungenerous and should find wide appeal. Clearly, this wine can get to a really good point now with lots of air and stay at this level for quite some time, but how much above this level bottle age will give it is above my pay grade. That said, I’d for sure buy more at this price, although I don’t expect to have that chance, and if I’m just left with the one bottle, it will get quite a bit of sleep before its moment in the sun. These plaudits and my general affection for this cuvée notwithstanding, to the dismay of my CT friends, at around this price range, I’d almost always reach for Saffredi, Grattamaco or Sammarco if I wanted an Old World CS-dominant blend, or gladly pay a few shekels more for Guado. From this land mass, I’d probably throw Andrew Will into the mix, maybe Corliss, but it’s pretty hard to come up with much competition from the Golden State. Alas . . . 94++

  • UGC 2019 Singapore (Singapore): More weight than Langoa but also with good balance. Not the most aromatic St. Julien but then this is Leoville Barton...

  • Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux 2019 Vintage Tasting, Singapore: Tasted at UGC Bordeaux 2019 tasting in Singapore.

Well structured and balanced with decent concentration of flavours. Some darker fruits and a touch of smokiness. Like Langoa, not yet resolved into something more complex but I think this will come with age.

Too young to score but anticipated range 91-94.

  • Full flavoured and complex with good tannin structure. Seriously good. Smoky, graphite, good density, earthy, coffee, expressive. Long and highly potential.

  • Tried the 19 Leoville Barton back in May and late November. The bottle in May was really stunning - beautiful purple and plum fruit with multiple layers. Every glass was different - in May my thoughts were that this was certainly a great wine! The aromas from the glass were mesmerizing and it was tough to stop smelling it! It was excellent from Pnp through day 3. The bottle in November was very good but more muted or shy than the first one. There appears to be some bottle variation with very young Bordeaux. Regardless this is an outstanding wine that is QPR of the 2019 vintage in my opinion along with the regal Brane Cantenac.

  • Out of 375. Rich, though with interesting underlying energy. There’s a pure cherry fruit on the palate. Better on night two. Needs 8-10+ years.

  • Excellent Barton and one of the better 2019s I've had so far. It's rich, succulent, and saturating, broad in scale on the palate but also with a sense of dimension--deep, black-toned fruit sets the backdrop for a complex array of flavors dancing across the stage including pencil fillings, a gravelly minerality, and a nice curranty snap. It has thick woolly tannin but there's enough else going on it's not a distraction.

  • Union des Grands Crus: The first bottle shows a shy nose, the second rapidly evolving and expressive, picking up black fruit, graphite, a touch of black olive, licorice, and iodine. The palate is medium-full but possesses a definite elegance with fresh fruit, mineral, and sophisticated tannin. Clean, long finish.

  • An unusually open showing for a LB at a young age. Here we are in a full body, way more than CLP, but, we are in open mode with incredible balance and focus. A really delicious wine with no deviation from the earth laden, masculinity of the style, yet rich in fruit without being heavy. A cross between a 2005 and 2006? Maybe....Drinkable with long decant, and hell yes holdable. For me, a HOLD

  • Chalky tannins, stemmy with bright fruit. At LA UGC. Rating may have suffered by comparison with nearby tasting.

  • Classic Bordeaux here. Obviously needs time in the bottle to pick up weight and density, but this showed promise with everything in balance for the Bdx lover. A stalwart.

  • UGC Bordeaux (Union Station - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Dense and meaty with the intense concentration of the vintage front-and-center, but with firming structure in the near background., making this slightly backward, but nearly approachable. Goes on + on. Very good 94+ point potential.

  • UGC NY; 6/28/2022-6/29/2022: This may be one of the better QPRs of the vintage, still available for GBP$60 in the UK. 93 with upside.

  • Powerful, concentrated, tannic, refined and almost muscular, the wine opens with tobacco leaf, cedar chest, cigar box, lead pencil, herbs and currants in the aromatics. Full-bodied, long and intense, with a black and red currant, spice and leafy, savory finish. This is an age-worthy vintage which is going to demand time in the cellar before it fully begins to soften and offer up all of its layers of nuance and complexities. Drink from 2032-2060.

  • Dusty with dark fruits, menthol, fresh mint,A superbly balanced wine with silty round tannins and a long finish after a beautiful pure dark fruit profile. Excellent!

  • Lord's 2019 in bottle tasting. Since 09 both Barton's have really stepped up a gear. The three Leoville's were some of the best wines of the tasting and Barton was only just pipped by Las Cases on this occasion. Big St. Julien nose, plus some sea breeze, big fruit and fabulous balance and length. A must buy (and I have) that will be fascinating to compare to the superb 09 and 16 over time.

  • UGCB 2019 tasting (Amsterdam): Classical wine with beautiful and luxurious oak and cedar, beautiful dark berries, good acidity and tannin which is round and firm as well. Really great wine. 96+

  • Amsterdam UGCB Tasting (Beurs van Berlage): Perfectly classical Barton, delightfully floral, crisp but creamy fruit, firmer tannins than in recent vintages but they are ripe and perfectly integrated, amazing resonance and length. Will drink well young (with food) or old.

2028-2050 vvWine.ch

  • Arvi Bordeaux 2019 Arrivage (Dolder Grand, Zurich): Tasting of 25 wines (2 whites, 3 sweet, no first growths) at a Bordeaux 2019 in the bottle event. My observations were: i/ the tannic structure was soft and well-integrated across the board, ii/ the fruit was generally fresh and light with no heavy-handed extractions, iii/ Top wines were Client (97), Léoville Barton (96) and Smith Haut Lafitte (96). More thoughts and list of wines included in the tasting story.

    Tasting note:
Intense with piercingly fresh fruit of mixed berries, leather and earth. Amazingly nice and fresh palate. Great tension. A convincing Léoville Barton, in this vintage one step ahead of Poyferré for me.

  • Bordeaux 2019 - 15 red / 2 white / 4 sweet wines: UCG Arrivage Tasting. A few observations on the red wines: 1) Overall quality: 2019 is indeed another great vintage for Bordeaux reds. The quality was good across the board. 2) Ripeness: 2019 is less ripe than 2015/2018. Out of 15 wines only one (Gazin) showed overripe. But 2016 still wins in this category with the freshest and purest fruit expression. 2019 is in between 2015/2016. 3) Complexity: 2019 will not reach the heights of 2016 but is almost on par with 2015/2018, although the latter one will need to flesh out for quite some time reveal all nuances. 4) Precision: I found superb precision in many wines, however, again not on the level of 2016. 5) Structural frame: The tannins are ripe and very fine, the acidity is generally high (but not as high as in 2016), the texture is nicely airy (unlike with many 15s/18s), no alcohol heat (a problem in 2018) and the wines are very harmonious. 6) Best wines tasted were a magical Canon (96+ pts), a superb Leoville Barton (95 pts). Unfortunately, they were all out of Pichon Lalande - supposedly one of the wines of the vintage.

TN: Very expressive, super fresh, classic nose with lots of the typical fresh blue and black fruit, lots of minerality and herbs and a touch of sexy coffee scents which I haven‘t experienced in Bartons before. Superb delination and intensity, definitely a nose you can‘t stop smelling. Same on the palate with an amazing attrack with intense fresh dark berries, herbs and minerality, good mid palate weight and long and expandin finish. Some blue and red berries too and even some floral notes. Quite complex already at this young stage. Despite some coffee scents, floral and red fruit notes, this Barton very much stay in the classic camp with superb freshness and a wall of fine but noticeable velvety tannins. Very good from start til the end and for me the winner on the left bank in this tasting. This feels on the same level as the magic 2016 with the same precision and the classic proportions but has probably a touch less substance and a slightly lower precision but some sexy sweeter and more floral notes, the 2016 doesn‘t have. Easily 95-96 pts today but can definitely reach the 97+ pts category once mature.

  • Dark, almost inky in color, the showy nose, with its cedar, tobacco, herb, blackberry and black currant perfume grabs your interest. On the palate, the action really kicks in with its rich, full-bodied, tannic, fresh, powerful, yet graceful character. Mouth-filling and long, all those sweet black fruits linger. This is clearly a top vintage for Leoville Barton. 95-97 Pts

  • What aromatic volume this shows - bags of pure cassis, blackberry, gravelly pencil, and fennel. Very Cabernet. Virile tannins but everything is in balance. Long, cassis and licorice finish. This should have a great future ahead and it may be one of the slower 2019s to mature. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot. I imagine this will land somewhere in the mid 90s.

  • Barrel sample from 5 June 2020. Complete, multi-dimensional, marries concentration and freshness, rich but classical style, floral notes, hint of back-end heat, excellent tannic backbone. If all goes well, this might turn into a great classic in the vein of the 2009. 93-95.
