Marginally bettered the Unico Especial 2019 (Blend of 2006, 2007, 2009), but rather unexciting too.
Gorgeous signature silky tannins and elegance. There are definitely hints of a right bank Bordeaux here as well, with its cherry, plum and light leathery notes. The weight certainly builds, and there's a 40 sec finish.
At USD 800, we really expected much more of this wine. Not sure if I can stomach purchasing many more bottles of Unico, but there's still a specially aged bottle in my cellar.. we shall see in 2024!

29122022 - 1990 Unico Vega Sicilia + Aged wines luncheon at Tang Room. Hmm. Had really high expectation of this but lose out to the two other aged Aussies today. Started of with a voluptuous nose of mix dried red and dark berries, some cocoa nibs & toasted coconut. However, the palate is rather linear and uninspiring. Drank well the first 30 mins but felt it stopped evolving. Mid and end palate were desperate for some depth & weight. My first ever proper Unico but just perhaps this is past its prime

Felix's birthday celebration: Only had a small taste of this, I was stumped so I guessed an elegant Bordeaux like Margaux with the plummy fruit. Remarkably fresh with vibrant, sweet and spicy fruit. Not much tannins left but still retained an impressive power. Great wine.
Simply put, with only a splash decant, this is showing beautifully. Medium-bodied, fresh, spicy, earthy, and floral, with a wealth of elegant, vibrant red fruits, the wine tastes and feels great. It lacks the density found in the best vintages, but its refined nature more than makes up for it.

This time the bottle was properly decanted with 2 hours of aeration. Cork broke halfway but bottle was pristine. Initially acidity was high as is the case with older Unico bottles but that dissipated after 90 minutes in the decanter. Tawny crimson color, very dense wine, nose reminiscent of mature Bonnes Mares with spice, black fruits, game, iron, candied red fruits and so much more. On the palate outstanding nobility and preciseness, builds in the palate to strut its powerful and complex structure, tannins fully coated with a mocha and licorice finish. Flabbergasted by this wine. Decant and aerate for at least 2 hours and drink over 2 to truly appreciate this beauty.

Acker 200; 2/7/2020-2/8/2020 (The Pool & Cipriani): Just the teeny tiniest of sips as we were sharing a glass of this around a broader table. To me these wines need just ages to really strut their stuff. This one was quite honest much too young. Had been a pnp and it was all tight. The oak feels like it's integrated more at this point. Darker fruits. But didn't get much else. Would have been fun to spend some time with it, but plan is to get out bottles continue to sleep.

Slight mustiness at first, but blossomed into a very aromatic experience. Powerful palate, fully mature now. Excellent structure, tons of spice, meat, and dark fruits. Round and lovely wine, and firmly in its prime drinking window, which should extend for a long time.

Guys Night Out with Wagyu Tenderloin and Crepe Cake: Decanted about 2 hours. I liked this best when it as first poured into my glass. It was seemless, completely integrated and heavenly. Someone else pointed out very slight dill, which I then detected, and the dill grew with time. I think I'm the most American-oak sensitive person that I know, and everyone else at the table was ga-ga over this wine. I was too, until it started tasting like dill.

Guys Night Out: Bring Something You're Looking Forward To Drinking (Jason P's, St. Paul, MN): Dark red, maroon hued color. Here you with another head turner. Splendid nose of graphite, perfumed black fruits, incredibly aromatic, wild berries, dried dill seed. The palate is flat out gorgeous, the structure is integrated nicely, very smooth and soft, cassis, tart fruit, blackberry, plum, dried leaves, subtle dill, sllek tannins and a very long 45+ second finish. Wow, just fantastic. Thanks Dan for sharing this.

Double decanted at 2pm and started serving at 7pm. With extended aeration, the tannins have softened with ripe dark currant, herbs, nutmeg, spice cake, graphite and liquorice. Powerful and mouthcoating. I would decant the bottle for 3 hours if I serve this wine again at its youth.
Decanted and aerated for about 90 minutes and drank over 2 hours. Lovely mature crimson color with bricking at the edges and quite evolved. Nose of cassis, candied raspberries, blackberries and spice cake. on the palate dense entry and powerful lift with dark red and black fruits mid palate, very vivacious hardly reflective of almost 3 decades of age. Tannins still quite powerful signaling a couple more decades of evolution needed for this beauty and a long spicy finish. One of the most enjoyable VS I've had and a vintage that had been missing from my cellar and palate.

Maybe I am not leaving this wine long enough in the decanter or maybe the wine does not need decanting. I have noticed this with some of the older VS vintages and I am still perplexed as this beauty opened up with an outstanding nose of sweet blackberries, candied raspberries, blueberries, nutmeg, and flowers. Aging permeating the ruby color of this wine. On the palate very velvety and decent power, good acidity and complex structure mid palate but with the fruit waning a bit, and a super long and multi-layered finish and a touch of sweetness to the fruit. Medium to full bodied but I need to try a second bottle to firm up my opinion of this wine.

Wine of the night at a double blind tasting featuring older wines from the cellars of wine collectors, very generously contributed. At 28 years old, opaque, powerful, rich, meaty, well structured by acidity and tannin, seamlessly integrated, magnificently satisfying, and eminently ageworthy. Overall, a towering tribute to how great a Grand Reserva from Spain can be, here 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, arguably from Spain's greatest and most iconic winery.

From a magnum Deep dark red colour with some fading at rim Big rich nose, tobacco, warm spices, camphor, fruit here too, fresh dark fruit So clean and balanced, spicy, textured and creamy, ripe tannins, complex and very long, everything just so right, unflashy and aristocratic Tastes very young, hard to believe it's 28 years old Showing beautifully though this is clearly a wine for the long term Tried at berry bros in London

DoubleD Fest (Carlsbad, California): Not decanted, but allowed to breathe in glass for half an hour, then followed for another hour. Clear dark blood-ruby red with reflections of brick and mahogany. Amazing bouquet opening with luscious red fruit -- fresh cherries, currants and raspberries and their liqueurs -- leading to rhubarb and violets, and then on to mature notes of gun oil, graphite, leather gloves, pen ink, and antique walnut. An endlessly complex bouquet, changing by the minute, an all-star ensemble of aromas and flavors taking their turn in the spotlight. Ultra-polished on the palate, beautiful balance, silk-satin mouthfeel, lingering finish. My #1 and group's landslide FIRST PLACE with 10 first place and 3 second place votes out of 13 people voting. Thanks to our guest of honor DoubleD for bringing not one but two bottles of this memorable wine.

Disclaimer: I had never tasted the 1990 vintage before; perhaps the particular bottle we enjoyed had aged particular well.
I have tasted (even) more expensive wines, such as Pingus, but never a better one. This is a truly majestic wine, awesome and stunning! How such a wine has a rating below 93 whereas a boring fruit bomb like Caymus Special Selection (aka "Liquid Marmelade") typically rates above 94 is an utter mystery to me.
Then again, to paraphrase Mark Twain, let us be thankful for the fools who prefer fruit bombs. But for them, the rest of us could afford Vega Sicilia, and similar wines, even less.
Aun Es Joven. Still very young as the sommelier of the excellent Rekondo at San Sebastián said. And indeed this wine is only just kicking into gear now. A very savoury wine, light oaky dynamics still very present, dark cherries. Required a bit of time to develop. This is a wine of quality no question about it albeit was a bit charmless at times and felt a bit short on the finish. But truth being told we had this 10 years to early and this will easily age into further greatness. 93 for now but a great wine in the waiting we feel or at least hope.

At Gramercy Tavern w/Victor T. Excellent dinner and sommelier, has the unusual combination of being corkage friendly and great wine list and somm. Decanted for about 30 minutes, drank over 2 hours
Deep garnet/dark cherry color, mildly opaque. Nose was incredibly complex, savory notes, meats, orange peel, leather. Palate is rich red fruits, red cherry, cassis, spices, cedar, toasted oak. Rich mouthfeel and long, layered finish.
We lingered over this wine through appetizer/dinner and cheese courses...it just kept evolving and was equally great with all food types. This is a hedonistic version of Unico...Amazing wine that is bold, complex and still youthful at 26 years young...this one continues to evolve and probably goes for another 15 years at this level.

Orange/brown in colour at the rim, quite dark red only in the very centre. Sweet nose, opulent, slightly plummy, ripe berry notes, cherries, tobacco, spices, wood, herbs, a hint of vanilla - very expressive and lush. Quite sweet and round on the palate as well, harmonious and very balanced, acidic and mineral, zesty. Hardly any tannins noticeable. Very long and really fresh, polished and beautiful. Not sure if it will improve, but I see no rush in drinking this. 95-96

The color shows an aged wine with a dark core and red brick rims, very complex aromas of dried plums, blackberries, sour cherries, cassis, licorice, cedar, leather, charcoal, smoke, damp earth, roasted meats, sweet spices, crushed stones, and hints of volatile acidity. A mid-bodied wine with silky textures, the attack shows sweet plum flavors leading to a mid-palate with sour cherries, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and hints of orange peel. The finish is dense with flavors of roasted meats, sweet spices, a small hint of creamy vanilla, crushed stones, as well as silky tannins. It definitely has a slight similarity to an aged Pomerol, drinkable at this moment but could last for a couple of decades more.

Magnificent wine and positively ready to drink! Intense, complex and luscious nose offering cedar nuances, milk chocolate, ink, sandalwood, leather, earth, sweet spice and dark fruit and changing throughout the night. Palate is sweet and smooth with tannins hidden behind the fruit and glycerin. Intensely flavored and long. A wine on par with first growth Bordeaux and very similar to such from a warm vintage. Archetypal old world style of wine combining richness and elegance. Perfect balance and harmony.

Had this side by side with 90 LLC and 90 LMHB. The Unico showed very well and had the biggest taste out of the three. Of the three, this one was the baby of the group. I say wait 10 more years before consuming. It is a great wine and showed true potential to be a monumental wine. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for cellaring potential.

A mixture of 1990s (The Ledbury, London): After the big assertive new world cabernets, this seemed quite restrained, some earthiness on the nose, possibly TCA, tannic, fine fruit - this probably sufferered from being served in such big company

Has a particular earthiness in the bouquet that some people identify as TCA, but it's different, and more importantly, it's pleasant. Very chewy, robust wine, with strong sour cherry acidity, kind of a meaty, animal flavor, and plenty of tannic structure. Overall, a brilliant wine, but also controversial, as many people find the acidity too strong. Don't open this one at a wine tasting, save it for dinner and you will be rewarded.

Dark garnet color with very slight bricking at the edges. Nice aromatics with cassis, graphite, plum and cedar complicated by tobacco, smoke and maybe a touch of leather. Medium bodied and elegant with a long finish. I was disappointed as this was the weakest Unico I've had; but in the grand scheme of wines, a fantastic wine!

Pure, leathery notes with tart red cherry and rustic, VA-laced flavors. Delicate fruit profile yet aggressive, stern tannins need time. Not a showy wine, and seems a bit advanced in fruit profile compared to a bottle last year, but interesting and enjoyable.

Distinct VA wafting off the bottle and glass. Slightly oxidized note that made us fear for the state of this wine. Immediate impression is an incredible mouth-feel like liquid suede. Velvet tannins and roses with sour cherries. Complex and well-balanced with a tight warp and weft of competing elements. Delicious. Developed a clear cruciform nose - a compliment - and musk and melon elements over time. Rich and rewarding with more facets than can be enumerated.

I intended to decant this for 1 hour and it ended up sitting for 3, (whoops!). A touch of cedar and earth right out of the bottle. Soft tannins. A very floral nose with a bit of a cherry palette and a somewhat sour finish. Somehow, this wine seemed a bit thin and out of balance. (Thin for Unico that is.) Somewhat dissappointing, perhaps it sat too long, (don't think so though). Drink now.

From a magnum
Deep dark red colour with some fading at rim
Big rich nose, tobacco, warm spices, camphor, fruit here too, fresh dark fruit
So clean and balanced, spicy, textured and creamy, ripe tannins, complex and very long, everything just so right, unflashy and aristocratic
Tastes very young, hard to believe it's 28 years old
Showing beautifully though this is clearly a wine for the long term
Tried at berry bros in London

Drink now.
