Wow. It’s incredible to think this is 34 years old. The dominant factor was soy and worchester sauce. Seriously dark in the glass and incredibly well stored from the freshness. The Gevrey structure was evident as this was a masculine wine with a long finish. Worked well with charred lamb. From BV

A towering masterpiece in absolutely perfect condition. One of the absolute pinnacles of red Burgundy. Some volatile acidity on the first glass which quickly blew off. No decanting. Impressively powerful with a black fruited core still. Incredible purity and precision. Booming red cherry fruit, subtle spice, a lot of primary character still with elegant secondary nuance, no signs of tertiary soily or mushroomy notes or anything that advanced. Palate is striking, good bottles of this still have a decade or more of runway. Of anything we probably drank this two quickly over a couple hours as I suspect this would just continue to blossom. Classic, refined, polished. Pristine bottle, perfect seal on the cork with an audible pop. 96 - 97.

THAT Rousseau night (IT Shanghai): An incredible and special bottle that is definitely at apogee. Light red in glass and rocked to an fantastic opening of with wild strawberries, blueberries, kirsh, spice, earth and dried roses. Smoke, black tea, plums and cloves come through on the palate in spades with lushness and power amidst balance and finesse. A very serious wine indeed with great concentration, a velvety/silky mouthfeel and great density. We visited this 3 hours later and was showing simply just so sensual that you just want to hug all night long.

A few years since I have tried this and just as special as I remember it. Maybe just a touch more complex which maybe adds an extra point. A light ruby with clear bricking and a developed nose with some light perfume, red fruits and mushrooms. The palate is delicate and fully resolved. Served blind and we guess 90s burgundy, albeit I thought could be Vosne/Chambolle as more feminine than masculine. Perfect balance and harmony at this point. Hard to imagine aged burgundy being better than this. From BV

From a perfectly kept bottle the 1990 was the stand-out among many great bottles that evening with main theme of Rousseau Beze. Served side by side the also great 1989 it was this effortless ageless beauty of immense fruit purity, fantastic polished and sweet lush blue fruits, velvet tannins and immense length. A wine you wished to kiss your lips as often as possible in your life. Terrific stuff. But all the other Bezes were great that night too just to point out. And if you are in the mood for more old school rusticity the 89 would be my choice of poison.

drank side by side with the 91, and ahead of a combo of 99 Chambertin and Beze. all were remarkable wines, and while I've had a virtually perfect 91 Beze before, on this night I shaded towards the 90 just a little. the difference in vintage character was apparent with this having more succulence, while the 91 was oh so savory. It wasn't unanimous which wine was best, but as Chris put it: this wine makes you "want to crawl in the glass and bathe in it" !!

I have had this twice. Once with BV where it was spectacular, but a second bottle was totally different. Garnet, hazy, with a very developed nose and subtle palate. This seemed faded and I cannot believe the difference from when I had it on the other occasion. I suspect something was up with the cork or storage given this was so flat, hence, no score.

Bright cherry red in colour. Such an incredible nose. So much soy sauce along with spice, combined with vibrant tannins, fresh ripe raspberries and red fruits. At 30 years old, this is still so fresh and strong. This is a brilliant wine and a landmark for the vinyard. Shared by BV

Tasted blind, this wine had a medium red center with light tawny rims. The medium+ intensity nose generated cola, rhubarb, fig, black spice, and mineral notes.
In the mouth, this wine was rich and ripe with a great texture, awesome balance, integrated acidity, and outstanding length. The intensity of the Grand Cru fruit was clearly evident but in a refined way.
This wine was not obviously 1990 as it did not have any excess of fruit. In fact, it was rather refined and a bit closed in (despite its easy charm). This is the kind of wine that does not stand out in a comparative tasting because it is very nuanced and not dramatic.
The bottom line is that if you give this bottle 6-8 hours of air and really "zoom" in, it will blow you away. This likely has 2 points of upside. Stunning!

some warm yeast in the nose but wild strawberry fruit. Picking up sous bois and wonderful dried leaf notes. But the fruit has such length and purity. It’s crystal clear and lifted. The fruit profile seems so primary still but only that sweet earth on the finish shows it’s age. Crazy crazy good wine

Even better than the last bottle two years ago, this was poured without decanting and was impressive right away, reaching its peak after 20 minutes. It explodes with intense raspberry fragrances and flavors, with smoke and sweet pipe tobacco. It has a big acid backbone and is a sappy wine, with a silky smooth mouthfeel and a long finish, with hints of mint and herbs. Powerful, complex, intense and deeply satisfying. Perfect with roast duck.

Nose is brooding black cherry fruit, clean and without much secondary Gevry soil or rusticity for the vintage, even for Rousseau. A very youthful and intense example of this ’90. Pure cool black and blue berry fruit. The ripeness is quite restrained. Stubborn in terms of development, almost a little stunted. On the palate it feels texturally ’90 and is technically strong, but the flavours are still quite primary as well as darker and more concentrated. A rather serious wine this showing. Perhaps the aromatic expression to this bottle is being outshone by the ’93 Engel Grands Echezeaux, which is absolutely blossoming.

Magical 2x2 flights: 90 Chambertin, 90 Beze. 91 Chambertin, 91 Beze. A rare treat to have all four of these in one sitting. The 90 Chambertin was so pure, and so beautiful. Close to perfection. The 90 Beze was delicious, rich, and a great foil to the Chambertin. The 91 Chambertin was in any setting fantastic, but a touch shy of the perfect 90. Then the 91 Beze comes along, and is literally the sexiest wine on the planet on this night. So utterly lovely. What a perfect set of wines.

Reductive and a little gassy at first but quickly blew off into a polished black cherry lacquered nose. Youthful, dark, intense. Has all the fruit of the ‘93 Chambertin but not the same detail and complexity to the terroir-driven aromatics. Still several gears ahead of the ‘93 CSJ, which I also thought was excellent. Fresh and pure but surprisingly dark. Great.

Wow. What a difference vs the 90 Chambertin. Much wilder and and more leather and spice compared to the 90 Chambertin. The underlying fruit is just as pure and delicious. Samtig, mundfüllend mit butterweichen Tanninen ohne von seinem Gripp zu verlieren, 98

Saturday lunch with Eddie (Masseria, DC): Significantly fresher and more expressive than the bottle from Sep, 2015. Expressive nose displaying ripe red fruit with a hint of black, raspberry jelly, black cherry, espresso, a hint of sous bois, grilled cep, black truffle, iron and earth. Excellent concentration, packed ripe raspberry and blackberry, good acidity and mineral, still a hint of tannins and a long ripe blackberry and mocha driven finish. This is a ripe, imposing and powerful Beze, not very Rousseau but impressive and enjoyable.

Poured without decanting, given its age and potential delicateness. Clear medium garnet color; big aroma profile: moist earth, mushrooms, game, mint, smoke, leather, exotic spices and of course ripe red fruit. This has great acid levels, structure and balance, but overall it comes across as rich and surprisingly dense in flavor, with a very long, sweet mineral finish; an indulgent wine, yet also sublime; a tremendous experience.

Light ruby, although it deepened in the glass. Much as I found the aromatics 4 years ago-pungent, gamy, strong red fruit. This may have been more sappy than on that occasion. Marvelous fruit for almost 30 year old wine, rising camphor and wintergreen as it opened and a fine thread of soil. A little shorter on the finish than I would have hoped. Still outstanding, but the '86 Ygay white Rioja was more headspinningly great tonight.

Developing nose with pronounced intensity and depth and complexity that just sucks you in. A bit hard to put down in words but incredible delicious with fresh red berries, rose petals, truffle, decaying leaves, smoked bacon, oriental spice, luxurious leather and perfectly balanced, really expensive oak.
Medium bodied, high acidity and medium but firm tannins. So silky on the palate with pronounced intensity. It's juicy but still very serious and has a finish that goes on and on and on. Complete, just perfect. One of the best red wines I've had.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Beze event; 9/11/2015-9/12/2015 (Capella Hotel Georgetown): Medium nose displaying shy ripe red fruits, a hint of cherry and raspberry, menthol, cinnamon, sous bois, coffee, soy, mushroom and earth. There is a slight hint of oxidative note at the end which is not bothersome. Medium body, sweet roasted red fruits, a hint of rust and medium finish that ends with a hint of oxidative note. Some questions provenance and think over the hill. For my palate, it is showing the strong vintage characters, ie very ripe and not terribly precise. When we visited the domaine a few years back Mr. Charles Rousseau mentioned that he prefers the 91 to the 90. Paul N mentioned that this showed incredibly well en Magnum. Considering the price, not sure there is a need to really chase. I still enjoyed it.

Popped and poured, not decanted. Immediate and giant nose, stunning first impression. Powerful scents of sweet cherries, earth, mulch, hints of mushrooms and fresh, moist pipe tobacco. Elegant flavors, hints of vanilla and cinnamon, very long. Lovely acid and even, smooth tannins, a bit dusty as time went on. The huge and powerful nose lasted all evening and contrasted with a light and elegant body and flavor. At two hours it had gotten a bit flabby, at 3 hours it was fading but lovely and still elegant. 97 nose + 93 structure = 95 vote.

Opened an hour and a half before serving, with roughly 60 minutes of that in a decanter. It was totally reticent at first (i.e. when I had a brief taste about 15 minutes in). At serving time the nose was far more expressive - though by no means jumping out of the glass - with red and blue fruit (cherries, strawberries, blueberries) and kirsch. Mint, spice, cherry and strawberry on the palate with a medium finish. Overall this wine was very good, excellent even, but when you're drinking a wine like this I expect more. Still, a very good drink, and I wouldn't turn down some if it were offered to me!

With a USA slip label. A little stinky on the nose. Still reasonably fresh but palate is completely secondary. Cool and minty but kinda lacks some vibrancy on the palate. It's true that Rousseau produced a better wine in 1991 as I had that a month ago which had a longer life ahead of it. This was drinking well now and unlikely to evolve much more.

My first bottle of Rousseau. Served blind, it was easy to grasp the aromas of fresh cherry, kirsch, earth and forest scents. Silky, soft and refined, there was a lush, sensuous quality to the texture. I do not normally comment on value in tasting notes, unless the wine delivered an amazing QPR. I almost fell over in my chair when I found out how much this wine cost! Nice wine, but are you kidding me?

Medium center, maturing rim. What a stupid way of putting it, but this just smells like great Burgundy-gamey, smoky and eventually quite minty. Lighter weight but quite intense. Some iron and earth, good fruit and excellent acidity for a 1990 wine. It showed more menthol over time and never became truly great. Excellent and subtle, but well short of being transformative; it just lacks that extra level of depth and complexity. Last wine of the year-on to 2013!

Two bottles sampled, one was great and the second one was beyond great, up in astounding range... funny how this wine has had such different experiences, including my own from some years ago where it was good but not at the same level. The burliness has eased and been replaced with depth and confidence. Great spice. Brilliant.

This started out very promising with an explosive nose of red and black fruit. Within 15 min, the wine had shut down hard revealing nothing but acetone on the nose. There was still fruit on the palate, but the wine was not enjoyable. One guy at dinner swore up and down that is was just shut down and needed more time. I think it was a VA issue. The wine opened a touch at the end of dinner but never kicked the acetone smell.

Medium garnet core, almost water hue. The bouquet was also quite shy, similar to the latour but blasted in the glass after 30mins or so. Wonderfully wonderful bouquet, such seductiveness and finesse, large scale, highly complex and fresh: sous bois, roasted coffee bean, sweet herbs, chili leaves, cloves, sweet red and dark cherries, savory meatiness and preserved plum with a bed of dried flowers, wow!! Medium bodied, this 1990 Rousseau is still pretty much a youngster, mouth coating intensity, layer and layer of complexity with incredible energy and freshness. There is this great sense of finesse and purity too. Ethereal finished that continue to linger with sweet spices, sweet dark cherry fruits and gaining weight, mouth coating! A complete wine.

Chambertin Clos de Beze Dinner (Boka - Chicago IL): Tasted single blind with Rousseau 88 and Jadot 88. I think our server accidentally mixed up this bottle and the Jadot 1988, so my note here is for what I think was the Rosseau 90. Powerful super-ripe red and black fruit on nose with intense spice of roasted meat. Same ripe fruit on palate, perhaps not the most perfectly balanced or elegant wine, but it is beautiful and sensationally hedonistic. This was opened 2 1/2 hours before serving, most of which was in decanter.

The unanimous consensus of the participants is that the Chambertin is just that wee bit better - that is consistent with Allen Meadows' findings, and the same as our tasting some years ago. But no one is kicking this wine out of bed! It is burly and amazing, beautiful density and power and lovely complexity. It has the spice of the Bèze but where it is found to be lesser is in its angularity versus the Chambertin, which is smooth and suave.

Rousseau Chambertin Clos de Bèze: 1964 - 2014 (Per Se): Wonderfully expressive bouquet that has clean and pure red and black berry fruit, mild dark spice, and subtle terroir influence. A gear behind ‘91 however, especially on the palate.

Tasted blind.
Clear, pale intensity, garnet color.

En ynnest att få prova och det största problemet är hur man skall få råd att dricka något sådant här igen...

Perhaps a somewhat discombobulated bottle. Slightly turbid. High quality dark fruit, broad earth notes, and faint dark savory spice, but overall the palate was imprecise for what this wine should be.

Wonderful mix of blackberry, dark tar, clove and black pepper notes, amongst others. Bottle was solid and intact but not as pure and fresh as the best examples.

1995 Bordeaux Showdown (Azuma): Concentrated and deeply coloured, the nose is expressive and had aromas of redberries, earth, black cherry and dark chocolate. Set to improve over the next 5+ years.
