  • Brane Cantenac can’t do no wrong the last few years. Every year is another step up in quality. The 2020 is truly excellent. On the nose, dark fruits, hint of cocoa, hint of menthol, dried flowers. On the palate, fine tannins, high acidity, but still balanced. Elegant, intense even at 13.5% alc. Top of the class in this price point.

  • From the cellar...compared to earlier bottles that were more approachable, I found this bottle to be completely shut down now needing 5+ hours of swirling decanting to begin to deliver. Time to either let this one rest for now or plan for many hours of air.

  • Suckling Wines of the World: no detailed notes but recall silky tannins and good freshness and black fruits.

  • Like many CT'ers have pointed out this young Bordeaux is drinking very well at this stage. Bottle was opened for three days and every approach was better than the last. Great QPR and even better wine.

  • Really a superb young Bordeaux. Balanced fruit, acidity and tannins. Unusually approachable and desirable for young Bordeaux. Unwraps with air but still maintains the youthful kick. Will enjoy following this over the years. The best I’ve had from this chateau at this stage, with room to improve.

  • From coravin. Reticent but complex nose of dense cedar and potpourri. Palate is extremely long with strawberries and lychee on top of tobacco and cedar. Fascinating and exceptional. I can’t imagine drinking more than one glass of this at a time.

  • Decanted for four hours. This is an exceptional BC, with a near perfect palate that is full, agile, and almost weightless. The finish glides for over a minute. Blackberries, gravel, flower shop, camphor, cassis and cedar chips. Elegant but also masculine, with this very structured frame displaying the obvious ability to age. In fact, this will last decades. Every millimeter of your palate is coated with black and red fruit. I also get some earthiness. The best ever from here, which is stating a lot considering how astonishing this chateau has been as of late. I suspect that there will be a dumb phase in a year or so. Drink 2029 -.

  • Way too young to show it's stuff but it's clearly a balanced style with green aromatics in a good way. Elegant tannins. It should gain complexity over the but will it age as well as a robust vintage like 2019? Wouldn't bet on it.

  • Refined, perfumed nose with floral notes, blackcurrant, vanilla and cedar. Full bodied with high, plush tannins, fresh acidity and a long finish. Will be great once mature.

  • 20 Vintages of Brane Cantenac: My limited experience with Brane has been mostly positive, and this tasting confirmed my initial thoughts: these days, Brane is A) usually quite accessible and charming, even young; B) the quality has steadily improved over the years, the wines are becoming more complex, precise and balanced; while vintages pre 2015 often seemed a bit simple, more recent vintages show better, C) the aromatics in recent vintages remind me of Ch. Margaux, with beautiful ripe red fruit core, as well as floral and coffee components; and D) the quality/price ratio is exceptionally good (not considered for the ratings). E) The best wine was the ethereal 2020 (96 points), followed by a superbly fresh 2010 (95 points). Although the quality is exceptional these days, the Chateau didn't fully nail every vintage, the 2019 (93pts) and, more surprisingly, the 2016 (93pts) were strong but a tad too ripe and sweet.

TN: This was my wine of the evening, no question. Like many 2020s, this wine is all about elegance, delicate balance, softness and purity. On the nose and palate, there are intense but never overpowering layers of fresh, pure red and dark red berries, lots of strawberry, rhubarb notes, a hint of Margaux-esque coffee and toasty aromas, herbs and minerality that create a beautiful aromatic balance. High complexity, excellent definition and this wonderful, elegant structural framework. This was the most airy and light, almost Burgundian wine. Wow. I could drink this every day.

Decanting: Not decanted. No decanting needed (but that might soon change).

  • Langtons Bordeaux 2020 Arrival Tasting (Sydney, Australia): Another standout. Deeper coloured. Good depth of flavour, lovely acid frame. Very complete and enjoyable. Will get even better. Very classy. 94-95

  • Fresh blackcurrant, black plum, a little liquorice, sweet spice, slightly baked quality to the fruit, a touch of tobacco leaf and a meaty note. Juicy with quite spiced blackcurrant and plum on the palate, grippy, persistent, coarse flour textured tannins, alcohol helps carry the finish. Hmm

  • Cedar, roses, red plums. A lot of balance. Plenty of acidity and tannins. Wait wait wait. 10 years min. Beautiful stuff. 96+

  • Vertical of 20 vintages - Chateau Brane-Cantenac: It was a pleasure to taste 20 vintages of Brane-Cantenac. All wines were tasted blind and with little time (10min per flight of 4 wines). Coming from the Margaux appellation, the wine convinced 1) with its accessibility of all vintages, 2) often very feminine and fresh vinification and 3) especially the consistency of quality to be emphasized. So it was not surprising that all 20 bottles (for the first time in this tasting with 12 people) were empty. At the same time, it could also be noted that the very great complexity for ratings above 94 points is often somewhat lacking. Very exciting to observe were the significant change in fruit. Until the 2009 vintage, this was often primarily red-fruited, light and very strongly Cabernet influenced. From the 2009 vintage on, a clear shift to more extraction and sweetness of the fruit is noticeable. The last, often great vintages from 2015 to 2020 are ripe but still with a good freshness/aciadity (except for 2015 according to my impression).

    Tasting Note:
    - This vintage is somewhat reminiscent of the 2016 vintage, but is fresher and presents aromas of blackberries and blue fruit with a cooler note.

    - On the palate, it shows a fresh characteristic, accompanied by a crisp acidity and yet ripe tannins with great potential. It seems as if all the components could develop even further and merge into a harmonious whole.

It seems that this wine could be even better than the 2010 vintage, although the latter had more complexity (at the moment). Hopefully, the 2020 vintage will maintain a similarly good acid structure.

Wow, this is very drinkable at the moment. 93-94 points.

By the way, all vintages from 2015 to 2020, none were closed today.

  • Background: Group of 5 Family members tasted 5 young 2020 Bordeaux, all from different AOCs. Wines Tasted: Clos Fourtet, Château Clinet, Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Château Pontet-Canet, Château Brane-Cantenac.

The Brane-Cantenac got one first place vote, and I believe this was everyone else’s second favorite choice (regardless of their first choice). When the notably lower price point was revealed, everyone was impressed. Bright blackberry fruits, with smokey and tobacco flavors, and deep earthy flavors. “Just yummy.”

  • This might have slightly more up-front charm than the 2019, but I'd probably have to try them together to pick a favorite. Either way, they are both built for the long haul. This opens with rosy red fruit and assertive tannins - not rough, but powdery, with quite the drying effect. Over time the fruit complexion turns deeper and blacker and the texture more tender and user-friendly, but there remains something clenched at the core that will have to unwind over the long term.

  • Tasted at a 2020 vintage UGC tasting in Singapore. Lovely purple fruits. Cassis, touch of underripe raspberry. Nice graphite and pencil lead note along with some violet. Touch of tobacco leaf. Very precise and an incredible structure to the wine. Great acidic balance and a long finish.

A highlight of the 2020 vintage and this will be sensational when fully matured: 96-98+pts.

  • With pungent notes of flowers, tobacco leaf, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, smoke, and wet earthy nuances, the perfume is in full force. The fruits on the palate offer purity, elegance, lift, and silky tannins, which is a good thing, because you want as much of these gorgeous, sweet, pure, red fruits as possible. The velvet and silk finish is a treat to taste and experience. This is another stellar vintage for Brane Cantenac, an estate that has been on a non-stop roll. This is a wow wine that fans of the estate should run, not walk, and buy as for now, prices are still more than reasonable. Drink from 2025-2055.

  • UGCB tasting Bordeaux 2020 Walkaround tasting so in general just short notes (Beurs van Berlage, Amsterdam.): Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark and red berries, flowers, a beautiful dose of oak, juicy acidity, round tannin and a great length. Beautiful wine. Wait another 10+ years. 93 - 94+

  • Cassis, dark berries, tannins that keep building up. Fresh though slight hint of alcohol. Floral, sapidity. Fresh long finish.

  • Pretty but deep, too - violet, blueberry compote (but reflecting its intensity, not cloying). This is a more focused and deep rendition of Brane Cantenac than typical but that's the 2020 vintage for you. Very good. 93-94

  • Tasted at the UGC at the Drake Hotel in Chicago. This was one of the three best wines out of the twenty or so I tasted and was right up there with the Pichon Lalande and Pichon Baron, which were the other stars of the night as far as I was concerned. With well concentrated red over and black fruits, a beautiful floral nose, dusty tannins, judicious oak, and all around impeccable balance, Brane-Cantenac’s star was burning very brightly tonight. Given the vast price differential between this and Pichon Lalande and Pichon Baron, there is no need to buy the Pauillacs if your intention is to obtain the highest quality wine for the least amount of money. I’ve bought a case. 13.5% ABV. Excellent; exceptional/*****

  • Elegant but rich with ripe fruit and coffee undertones and balancing acidity. Alcohol and tannins in balance. At UGC LA

  • At the UGC 2020 tasting in Chicago. Pleasing strong fragrance, mainly fruit, both fruit and oak on the palate. Rich flavor of Cabernet, no obvious faults. Long aftertaste over 10 seconds. Very silky texture that really adds to the enjoyment of the wine, great structure. Of 27 wines I sampled at this event only 3 others as good to my taste. Appreciated that I could speak with Marie-Helene Faurie, the representative from the chateau who said they have managed some strong recent vintages in spite of the challenges of a warming climate and are adapting by adjusting the percentages of Cabernet and Merlot and additionally growing more varietals that benefit from a changing climate. One of my favorite estates, I have fond memories of many past vintages and am pleased to find the 2020 another wonderful wine.

November 2022 in Zürich) www.vvwine.ch

  • At a tasting of recently bottled 2020s. BIG nose, more tannins, fruit and acidity than most. Balanced with a long finish. Slight concern over the level of acidity l have 6 of these so time will tell.

  • Blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis, violets, tobacco leaf and earthy nuances create the attention seeking nose. Dark in color, with equally dark, palate-coating fruits with layers of velvet-textured, sensuous, sexy, deep red berries. The fruits display a majestic sense of purity. The elegant, silky finish remains with you for close to 60 seconds, expanding and building in intensity. This is a wow wine that fans of the estate should run, not walk and buy as soon as its offered. The wine blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenere 13.7% ABV pH 3.71. The harvest took place September 14-September 28. 96-98

  • Very deep appearance
Classy nose: nice oak, touches of graphite, cassis, perhaps some blue notes and a raspberry edge.
That raspberry note appears on the palate too, easing a sinewy attack (which slightly pinches things). Has some salty density, good energy, it feels sappy and spicy, with great lift and attractive red fruit flavours.
