Uncorked and left for two hours. Then poured, no decant.
Spicy, dusty, tobacco cedar and earth, with violets, and then darker fruits, plums & black cherry. Certainly in its secondary/tertiary phase, with the earthier woody notes to the fore and the fruit slightly more shy. But still very good and the fruit still has a decent presence.
One the palate plums and black cherry make the initial appearance but then meld into softer red fruits, red cherries and strawberries dipped in chocolate. A decently silky mouthfeel too. If this sounds too decadent, there’s a substantial umami tannic structure of cedar, tobacco and earth and a still assertive acid presence that bites on the back palate.
Very enjoyable, with a slight feeling that I came to the party a little late to enjoy the wine in full bloom. This is reinforced by a touch of oxidation creeping in after a couple of hours. But this was an online auction purchase so YMMV.

Auction purchase, firm cork 2/3 soaked. Splash decanted off moderate fine sediment. Showing slight bricking. Red cherry, raspberry. A bit of minerals and ash. 14.5% ABV, nice mouthfeel, silky, even with the medium body and tart, juicy acidity. Very fine.

Dark red color. Slow-O for 90 minutes. Drank a glass over an hour. Anise, tar, black olive, black cherry, a little celeryseed and vegetal edge on the nose. The palate shows blackberry, black cherry liqueur, black licorice, gravel, with fairly round tannins and full body.

must, sotto bosco, tannin, clean red fruit arrives over time; solid and savory; no florals for me. Kept my interest up, Worked with a pasta/red sauce but a bit much for the shrimp/mushroom/veggie risotto. and yup, lots of sediment so it benefits from a decant.

Outstanding - enjoyed with strip steak. This was the perfect time to enjoy. Red fruit, earth on the nose. Dark fruit, chocolate and leather to taste. Incredibly smooth finish. Loved these. Perfect Barolo!

Decanted two hours, in my four plus decades of decanting fine wine I have never seen such a massive amount of sediment, this includes many vintages of aged ports, What an excellent bottle of Barolo, great balance, spicy red fruit, big earthy flavors, outstanding finish, all I could asked for and more from an aged Barolo.
This, our last bottle, was terribly gone. I don't know what happens when a significant portion of the bottle comes out in something like dark purple sheets of plastic or grape skins. The wine smelled badly and tasted somewhat worse.

Similar impressions to last bottle. This time we decanted and filtered this wine to remove the plentiful solids. There was a much better mouthfeel with silky tannins. There was a much better aftertaste as well. This is an excellent Barolo.

Phil's Birthday tasting (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): From Coravin. Pot pourri, dried orange peel, pretty, slight wild plums, almost a slight saline quality. Opens with time and shows more and more depth on the nose. On the palate it has juicy, medium plus intensity acidity, wild plum and pot pourri, wonderfully drying tannic grip coats the tongue but is in balance with the acid and fruit. Needs times and/or meat but shows promise. Yum.

Still young, but excellent. Nice balance, weight and structure. Nose of roses, tastes of dark fruit, mineral, and forest floor. Velvety tannins, elegant. A more modern style of Barolo, but I like it. Drink or continue to hold.

From magnum. Opened for 1 hour but no decant. Still a youthful Barolo with tar and roses, forest floor, and a residual tannic bite. I would hold for a couple of years. My last bottle was corked. At least this one was clean.

Dark ruby, brown, slightly cloudy, dark brick color, not that characteristic of classic Barolo; black olives, forest floor, tar, sweet black cherry compote, mostly black fruit quality, sap, smoke, grilled red bell peppers, sauteed mushrooms; smooth, quite silky, moderate+ tannic grip, clearly not the mineral, amaro, savory classic Barolo I'm used to. Not bad, and oak pretty well integrated, but too soft, too easy, and masks true great Barolo character. Got lost with the Fontanafredda Riserva Speciale 1964 at Celestino (thanks Conrad). Still, really good with Triple Beam olive pizza the day after.

Opened at 3:00 and poured out a glass: wonderful fruit-oriented bouquet hinting at things to come, but primarily high-toned flavors and tannins. Dinner at 7:00: open for business with a bouquet of tar and roses and flavors of flowing, ripe red fruits, integrated oak notes, and lots of food-friendly dark citrus. End of dinner 9:00 with the sediment at the bottom of the glass, flavors have gotten rounder, more chocolatey. A wonderful ride and drinking very well with aeration. No rush to drink.

Deep opaque garnet with slightly orange rim. Modern style Barolo with noticeable oak treatment. Rich fruity character with traditional notes present but in the background. Pronounced acidity carries into the medium long finish with tannins present and clearly demanding some hearty dishes. Nice.

Air is this wine’s friend and this was definitely the best bottle yet: the significant oak has integrated beautifully, the tannins have receded, and the challenges on the acerbic finish have--at least for this bottle--entirely receded, leaving a bouquet with tertiary, earthy hints, and dark, modestly plush, woodsy-textured fruit with cocoa and good baritone harmony.

If you like oak in your Nebbiolo then this is the wine for you. If you're an old school Barolo lover - skip it. This wine was black to brown opaque. Could not tease out roses. Had sitting upright for two months. Did not need my used Durand. Toward the end of the decant smoke did not appear, but thin chunks of sediment then pebbles of sediment. Had to leave almost 2 glasses in the bottle. It had dark musty nose of oak with mushrooms. No sharpness. Had decanted at 2pm. By 4:30 it had nose of plums, leather, muddy stones, crushed vines, touch of coco, and dust. By 5:30 tar showed up. First taste revealed a huge wine. Long finish, lots of tar, panoply of spices, licorice, tobacco and leather. Later it seemed primal, oaky with lots of new oak and vanilla tannins. Chocolate started to show.
The oak was way too much. I still liked it. But will sell my remaining bottles at auction. It's a shame to ruin good Barolo like this.
If Barolo were a God, sitting on high among the greats of Earth's Heaven, he would have had to have his angered, destructive hand stayed for free will's sake.
3-hour decent recommended. Deep inner sweetness but limited on top, almost constrained. Good texture and the old acerbic notes are gone. I’m not sure this will improve; not enough juice. Drink now - 2022.

Little funky Brett-like on the nose right out of the bottle. Thankfully, it blew off after 30 minutes. Dark purple, almost opaque in the glass. Gave up some earthy mushroom and a little leather. Not as complex as I expected. Tannins still there, but nicely resolved. If I had another bottle I would decant to see if it just needs more time.

Q1 - 2018 Tasting - Aged Barolo Theme (NY, NY): 10/17 wines tasted double blind. This one looked very young in the glass, ruby red - no bricking. On the palate is tasted very muted old and musty - no bright fruits so it was confusing to me. Perhaps some mild TCA?? 1.5*

Aged Barolo (aka Q1 wine club) (The Apt): Wine #10: First impression was the alcohol comes through quite a bit with this one but it blew off with a bit of time. Then there was the funk, but that also with some swirling seemed to give way. What was left was more red fruits and a kindof fresh cut wood taste to it. Young wine and a bit closed up. Prob could have benefited from a good decant. (3 pennies)

Decanted 1 hr with massive amounts of sediment, cherry, plum, earthy nose, plenty of plums, cherry, hints of pomegranate, truffles, sharp acidic finish that took away from the overall enjoyment, still a very good aged Barolo with several years of life ahead.

A classic nebbiolo. Black cherry with some red fruits, a ton of forest floor/mushrooms. Some sweet oak. The finish was cut a bit short. Tannins are still firm but smooth.

The wine was dark purple. It had an intense aroma of cooked cherries but was so tannic that the aftertaste was cotton mouth. The wine drank better with some food but we ultimately decided to let this sit overnight. Next day it really sang. Graphite and cherries combine for wonderful a Barolo expression. Long finish of 30 plus seconds with very evident lead pencil.

Enticing nose of black cherry, anise, flowers, and cream. Gripping and intensely complex on the palate. Firm tannins, balanced acidity, and a gritty tartness come together harmoniously. Licorice, Chocolate, Cherries, and leather all competing for attention. Probably at the beginning of it's drinking window. A solid Barolo which will impress for years to come.

First one of these in just over 3 years. Given my recent bad experience with Barolo spoilage, I was very relieved to find that this one was just fine. Very consistent with my previous note from April, 2013. This is full-bodied, rich and velvety in texture. Modern in style, but not over-done. Loaded with ripe, delicious cherry fruit, and notes of chocolate, earth and mineral linger on the long, polished finish. The silky smooth tannins have almost fully integrated. A beautiful Barolo that paired perfectly with our grilled lamb chops. 50+5+12+18+8=93

This continues to drink well. Visually, the wine hasn't changed much, still fairly dark. There is a bit more earthiness (like wet earth) and red fruit on the nose. Tannins are smooth and black plums on the finish.

A powerhouse. Still wrapped up in a blanket of firm tannins, this is only just starting to reveal dense, dark berry fruit with layers of licorice, kirsch, and creme de cassis. The finish is savory. Tons of grip. Drink until 2021.

Wow! What a difference from the previous bottle and what a joy to drink. Decanted and drank after a few minutes rest. There were lots of solids to remove, so beware. Decanted 1 hr, secondary flavors have clearly entered the picture here, with loads of earth, leather, mushroom, herbs, hints of plums and black cherry. Perfect with food and ready for action as tannins seem quite integrated, drink over the next 5 or so years.

I reviewed this wine in 2009. Now the fresh fruits have melted into the background bringing the old world into the forefront. Bricking around the edges. Tar and melted asphalt. Balsamic reduction. Dark licorice. Charred strawberry. Raspberry. Crushed rose pedal. Violets. Dark and brooding. It really gained weight after opening. After a couple of hours it is getting lighter with violets and roses becoming more prominent. This will last for many years. Great value.

Decanted 1.5 hrs tasted over the next 3 hrs, last tasted 8/2010, I noted 5 maybe 10 years to show it's stuff, I am happy to say the former prevailed. Soft fragrant nose, with plenty of fruit. Big, mouth puckering tartness, bing cherry, pum, cassis, red currants, hints of raspberry, almost like a sweet tart end, infact the finish went on for a full 45 seconds. I would think of this as a modern style Barolo, that does lack the terroir affect that many Barolo's display, but I enjoyed the complexity of the fruit nonetheless. This bottle was in its early stages of it's plateau and will drink well for at least another 5 years, happy I have more.

Bright, deep red in color with ripe/jammy fruit of cherry, plum and notes of leather start to emerge after a few hours. A young modern Barolo that can use some time but I have no regrets opening this tonight as I doubt I would like this more in the future than I did today.

Decanted for 3 hours. Elegant and super smooth. Good fruit and acidity. It lacked some of the power I expected and that others have eluded to in their notes. Enjoyable, but not the barolo I would break out for a special occasion.

Decanted and drank over 2 hours. Brick red in colour. Plums, earth and a bit of leather on the nose. Towards the end of the night, started showing some black tea notes which the wife identified as pu-er and xiang pian. All in all, a pleasant enough bottle for a weekday night. Will wait a few years to open my other bottles.

Excellent after 2-3 hour decanting. Worked very well with lamb ragu pasta, topped with small amounts of mint. The fruit of the wine complemented the earthiness and mint of the ragu very well. Good body, too. This is very good now and still has more time to hold. Not sure how much better it will get, however.

Good start to the year. Great wine. Shows nice complexity now but has legs to evolve well in the years ahead. On the nose: dried fruit and elegance. In the mouth: the tannins need to be tamed and has good acidity. Asks for food. This is my last bottle. If I had another, I'd wait another 5 to 10 years to drink it and would leave in the decanter for 1-2 hours.

Sour cherry, kalamata, and black licorice on the front end, with big drying tannins on the back end. Betsy and I both felt like it wasn't ready to drink, and we're kind of bummed that we opened it so early. It wasn't really all that enjoyable.
By the way, there was more sediment in this bottle than in any that we have opened in months. It made our last glasses undrinkable, and there was a half-inch of sludge coating the bottom of the decanter. Pour with care!

Only got a 30 minute decant to go with some pizza. Still got so much better after time - definitely wish I could have given this one more time. Plum and darker fruits than the typical cherry I think of for Barolo. Tobacco. Old world but some new world elements I thought. Not a Barolo expert though. Probably a few points higher with years and more decanting.

Aerated to decanter 2 hours, returned to bottle, served non-blind. Medium+ ruby core, no sign of age. Very correct, traditional and pretty nose that gains complexity and beauty with airtime, made more impressive, I think, in that it starts out quite elegant to begin with. Great weight and texture, well-lifted, fresh acids, polished, fine tannins. If the CT avg of ~ $50 is correct, this is a true bargain for lovers of well-grown, traditional Barolo. An absolute joy to drink, and in a very good spot with proper aeration. Drink thru 2020, highly recommended

Stunning aromatics of fresh cherries and tobacco with hints of smoke and vanilla. Replays of the same on the palate. Need more time great acidity and quite a bit of tannins. Long finish but very enjoyable now. Stunning!
At a tasting graciously hosted by Bam_Man: Brick colored rim, light in color overall. Bouquet of menthol or wintergreen or evergreen gum, robust smelling flowers, minerality, and dark fruits.
Very nicely made, though other than the menthol-like element nothing stood out. This is a stalwart, well balanced and structured wine. It was lighter and whispier than other Barolo's I have tasted, more like a Barbaresco.

After an overnight slow-ox, this still needed several hours in a decanter before fully opening up. Pretty aromas of cherries, earth and spice on its understated nose. Full-bodied, incredibly complex and impeccably balanced. Intense flavors of cherries, black licorice, tar and chocolate saturate the palate. The elegant finish - featuring velvety tannins and a hint of menthol - just goes on and on. Not a blockbuster, but extremely satisfying and delicious. By far the best Barolo I have tasted from this producer and very worthy of its selection as #14 in the WS Top 100 of 2008. 50+5+12+18+9=94

This is one of the more concentrated Barolo's I have tried. Dark, perhaps more newer in style but still retaining the classic Barolo characteristics of tar and rose petals. Very youthful and clearly would benefit from 5-10 more years of cellar time but a 13 hour decant work very well with this wine. Full bodied and masculine yet showing bright notes of black cherry, ripe red plum, licorice, mushroom and cedar. Excellent balance and finish. The long decant helped tame the firry tannins and pairing it with Osso Bucco made an excellent marriage.

Poped and poored at Portofino in Atlanta. This was the best Barolo I've had in the last year. It is starting to come into its own. Much darker than most barolo, and I would say it is more of a new world style. Nose of violets and roses with a bit of earth. Mouthfilling red and black fruit, minerals, even a little spice. Tannins have mellowed over the past year.

Consistent with prior tasting notes. Nice Dark red color to purple in color, with some transparency. The nose offers a lot of florals again, with some red berry and cherry. Glass coating, but still offers medium weight. Fruit is well balanced with nice acidity and tannins. This persists through a good 35-45 second finish. A very drinkable Italian blend, and it has some secondary cedar and herbs notes on the back end. Lovely!

Popped and poured. No nose....I mean NO nose at all. I think this bottle may be off a little. Very tight initially. Very simple tart red cherry fruit with not much else going on. Very dry and acidic, but not in a bad way, just in a old world style. I thought this producer is supposed to be more modern in style? As it opened, some licorice notes and a little mohogany/cedary note showed up. The tannins started to unfurl as well and there was a little dusty fruit on the nose, but you really had to dig for it. Not sure what to make of this. Disappointing overall, but it is young, it wasn't allowed a lot of time to show itself and it may have been an off bottle.

The nose is a powerful and has ripe red fruits, blueberry pie, tar and earth. Each taste or sniff brings a new sensation. This is a great Nebbiolo. The mouth feel is big and concentrated but the tannins and structure show through. You can tell there is some French Oak. It is great to drink now and will improve with age. There is already some orange around the edges in color. Must buy more.

Truly beautiful Italian pedimont bottle. Has a nice deep red to purple hue. Has alot of red Strawberry, and floral notes on the nose. Good legs, coating the glass. Medium weight. The frontal attack was more Cherry, with some cedar and herbs. The finish was dry, but not peppery or overly tannic. Very nice with pasta! Great Barolo experience!

I totally agree with the Wine Spectator's review of this wine. Initial taste was light, the color was light, but I knew it would open up. Tastes of crushed violets and roses, menthol, licorice. It opend up to reveal the new leather flavors. Became hearier but in harmony. Velvety tannins from the start. Plums. The fruit was very ripe indeed. This Barolo is definitely the new style of Barolos. It is more accessible, more fruit-forward than the old style Barolos and can be drunk earlier. Old style Barolos are drier with more cedar/mahogony flavors with strawberry. I could get just a hint of those flavors but took a back seat to the other flavors. This wine would make a great introduction to Barolos especially if you are accustomed to Cal and Austrailian wines. Nebbiolo is a unique wine experience and not suited to all tastes. Overall a very enjoyable wine. Open one now and save the others. It will evolve for quite some time.

Yum.

The elegant finish - featuring velvety tannins and a hint of menthol - just goes on and on. Not a blockbuster, but extremely satisfying and delicious. Full bodied and masculine yet showing bright notes of black cherry, ripe red plum, licorice, mushroom and cedar. Excellent balance and finish. The long decant helped tame the firry tannins and pairing it with Osso Bucco made an excellent marriage.

Lovely!

A bit drier than expected -- almost thin for a Barolo. Opened up after a couple hours and expressed more fruit, but not as rich as others of the same year.

Needs time. A potentially great wine, but hard to tell right now. This needs to sit for a few years, post-2013.

91+. Too young. Consumed without food at the end of a tasting which probably negatively affected my impression.

Decanted 2.5 hrs, Very young and closed and present, however showing excellent structure and concentration. Old world flavor trying to come through, with smoke, earth, tar, leather, blue and black fruits. Great potenial in maybe 5 or 10 years. 92+

Day 2 review. Wonderful nose with violets, leather, oak, vanilla, and black currants. Powerful taste with blackberries, spices, oak, vanilla, crushed rock and mineral. Concentrated medium finish and plenty of tannins for the long hall. This wine is a bit better on day 2 and should cellar well for decades.

Minneapolis Wine Club Does Barolos; 2/5/2010-2/6/2010 (Kristen's House): New world style wine. Big nose with blackberries, floral, violets, oak and vanilla. Palate is also intense with oak, vanilla, black fruits, violets, and spice. Medium and concentrated finish. Good acidity and this wine shows nice structure.

I think this will still be a great wine. This was just popped and splash decanted. Served on the cool side, and I was unable to grasp the nuances before emptying the glass.

Plum and floral aromas, very acidic. Not giving much at this stage and I don't see see it improving much. don't even attempt this wine until 2015.

Beautiful Barolo. Clear garnet color throughout. Obviously youthful with crushed red berries and floral aromas. There is some earthiness on the palate that went well with the wild mushroom soup starter. Tannins are remarkably smooth.

The sent of red twislers and rose petal are overwhelming. Fruit and oak are well balanced and opened up after about 30 minutes. Tannins are soft, but very structured .Wine should be long lived and will improve with bottle age. Good solid effort.
